im not a pat/julian shipper but it seems especially funny to me if they got into fights like imagine julian's parliment defensiveness coming out like "well, with respect patrick, where's the proof? did you ever actually see me move the spoons, I think not sir!" and then pat forgetting to turn off children tantrum mode so in scoutmaster voice he's like "that wasn't a very nice thing to do to mr. kettle, was it? I think maybe we apologize to him and put him back home with his friends the teabags" like I think there's something here.
#i did imagine this scene out of nowhere the other day#and it was very vivid and quite funny#bbc ghosts#pat butcher#julian fawcett#do they have a ship name idk

father of the bride ~ bbc ghosts ~ part one (of two)
A/N ~ Alright folks, this is just a quick two-parter that I came up with on a long car journey. I’ve taken some liberties with the ‘Rachel Fawcett’ character and melded her into my own version.
button house, may
Rachel Fawcett was many things - a liberal, environmentally cautious, an acute over thinker and a whiz at pub quizzes.
One thing she was not, however, was a coward. No. Fawcett’s were not cowards, they couldn’t be (and wouldn’t,) the notion weaved into their DNA at conception.
But as she indicated up the long, winding drive, her stomach started to swallow her whole. Rain lashing down onto the windscreen. Wind blowing the car about. Bad omen? Maybe so. Button House was the place her father had passed away. She’d been warned against going by almost everyone she spoke to about the matter. Her friends, her mother - especially her mother. She could hear her condemnations now-
"Why in Christ would you want to host your wedding there?"
But Rachel had been adamant, she wanted her wedding day to be special and this was the place it was going to be (luckily her fiancé agreed and that was that.)
Parking the car by the cracked fountain, she gathered her belongings and exited. Instantly, the door swung open, a beaming and slightly nervous Alison Cooper greeted her. Her eyes briefly darting behind her, but straight back to Rachel.
“Hi.” Rachel greeted quietly, “sorry that I’m late, I couldn’t quite find the place and then-“ she motioned to the house, “you know.” Daniel always told her she was incredibly brave, but she doubted that right then.
Alison just shrugged. “Oh, it’s fine. Glad you still were able to make it.”
“I wouldn’t miss this,” she raced to the front door and entered, Alison making way, “finding a place to host a wedding is difficult enough these days, what with the cost of everything, so we’re incredibly grateful.”
“Is he coming?”
It took Rachel a moment, taking off her damp coat and frowning, but then- “Oh, yes, Dan! He’s travelling down from Edinburgh, got some work thing. He’ll be here though; he's dying to check out the house before the big day.”
“Great.” Alison grinned, taking Rachel’s coat and hanging it up. “Make yourself at home, I’ll get the kettle on and find Mike, he should be around here somewhere.”
Leaving Rachel alone, Alison headed off towards the kitchen, closing the door behind her and bracing herself for the oncoming storm, and OH boy, was that storm turning into a hurricane…
~
Alison stirred the teabag and inhaled, the voices around her all drowning into one. Finally, the spoon was placed down, and she turned, addressing her posse of ghosts.
“Alright, one question at a time please.”
Thomas went first. “Who is that beauty? You must introduce us, Alison.”
“Absolutely not, next”
Then it was Kitty. “She’s very familiar, has she been to one of your parties, or maybe a guest.”
“Hopefully she's not one of your God-awful friends. Highly unacceptable people.” Fanny interjected brashly, she had a point.
Alison gritted her teeth, ignoring the slight on her friends and turned towards the remaining three, “Anything from you?”
“Are we allowed to attend the party?” Pat enquired, excited about the prospect of more lovely music and people in the house.
“Of course, Pat, of course.”
Robin grunted happily - that had also been his question, so that left The Captain. He adjusted his swagger stick and stood straighter. “Anything to report about this one? Anything of interest?”
Alison picked up the cups and nodded firmly. “She’s here to host her wedding, that’s all. But wanted to see the place first. She’s staying for a night or two, just whilst her fiancé joins her. He hasn't seen the house yet. Oh- actually, there’s actually something I wanted to speak to Julian about,” she peered around the excited group but couldn’t see the suspect, “where’s Julian?”
~
Rachel felt oddly at home here… and she couldn’t place why. Every furnishing felt like a memory that she’d secretly repressed. Staring at the crackling fire, Rachel picked at her sleeve, unable to fully relax into the plush settee. Regardless of the warmth of the room, a shiver ran down her spine. A brief glance around the room.
Nothing…
Except for the pant-less ghost wavering a few feet behind the blonde newcomer, not that Rachel could see him. Julian didn’t need an introduction, he knew exactly who this was. His blue eyes stared down. Unable to look away. In all his time with the dead, he’d wondered what she would look like now. Sure, Alison had shown him those pages on the computer, the occasional mention on the Radio. He even remembers hearing a brief mention of her on the 6 o’clock News - she had switched parties during a rather difficult voting period, a Red now, not a Green.
This was his daughter, his Rachel.
“There you are!”
Both father and daughter turned to face the door, Alison standing with a bright smile and two cups of tea. Julian met Alison’s eye curiously as she entered, a silent question - ‘when was you going to tell me?’ Alison tried to brush him off with a smile and seated herself on Rachel’s right.
“Here you go.” Alison said softly, handing Rachel the brew. She then motioned for Julian to join them. It was subtle, but he took the invitation gladly, perching on the coffee table.
“Cheers Alison.” Rachel grinned.
Alison and Rachel spent a moment sipping on their beverages, which gave Alison the opportunity to observe the father-daughter duo. There wasn’t much of a difference. The same bold blue eyes, sandy-blonde hair - with a middle parting, Fawcett’s all had them, she remembered Julian once telling her.
“So, how do you like the house?” Alison queried, hopeful.
Rachel took another long sip and smiled softly. “It’s a beautiful house, you and Mike should be very proud of yourselves. I can’t wait for Dan to see it,” another sip, “but lord knows how long that’ll take, that storm doesn’t look like it’s going to stop.”
“Dan? Who’s Dan?”
“We’re trying with it,” Alison said. “We didn’t think we’d be hosting anymore weddings, to be honest—“
“What’s this about a wedding-“
“I’m bloody glad that you still are.” Rachel breathed, “my mother warned against coming here, said that I would bring shame upon the family, upon my party.” Julian held his breath, his wife was correct, as she always had been, yet Rachel persisted, “but I don’t care about all of that, I know you probably know about my father and how he… Well, the circumstances of his death.”
Alison kept one eye on Julian and on Rachel, then nodded. “I’ve been told. Sorry, by the way, I know that was probably hard for you to learn.”
Instead of sadness there was only hints of humour from Rachel. “Don’t be sorry, us Fawcett’s are a different breed, he may be gone and may have been a colossal idiot-“
“But he was your father.”
“He was my dad.”
And in that moment, the two girls knew they had an unspoken With that, the pair continued to drink their tea, falling into small talk about their lives. Julian opened his mouth but found he couldn’t speak. His throat tight, eyes slightly watering. Instead he exited the room, slowly, slightly forlorn. His thoughts still in the warmth of the room as he meandered through the corridors in search of his ghostly friends.
~
The storm had lessened by eight but there was still no sign of Dan, just a text to say that his train would be delayed, no surprises there. Mike ordered a round of Pizza’s, enjoyed by the humans and envied by the ghosts, then the couple sent a tired Rachel to nap, stating that: “they’d wait for Dan.”
Julian hadn’t said much during dinner, the other ghosts had taken note, but waited until Mike had sauntered upstairs to watch the latest episode of Big Brother (it wasn’t really Alison’s thing.) The remaining residents of Button House sat and stood, waiting for Julian to begin talking.
He sensed the group’s questions, so decided to address them. “She’s my daughter.”
“That’s Rachel?” Pat cried with wide eyes.
“That’s Rachel, my Rachel. It appears that she’s having her wedding here.”
Fanny frowned, crossing her arms. “And she’s aware that you died here, like that.” She motioned to his bottom half. Julian nodded silently causing her to just shake her head.
“That’s a good thing, right?” Thomas chimed in from the settee, “Your daughter must not hold a grudge, she must have some semblance of respect for you, but I’m not sure why.”
“Amen.” Fanny supplied.
Alison glanced around the room, stopping at Julian, tentative. “How do you feel about all of this?”
“It’s… Hard. She’s not a pixel on a screen anymore, she’s here.” Julian adjusted a cuff link and sniffled, he wouldn’t cry in front of them. “But Margot seems to have done well, all things considered.”
The Captain made to add to the conversation when a rapturous knock echoed on the front door downstairs. The group shot up, running straight to the windows. They couldn’t see who was there, the rain now pelting the glass harder. Alison rose from her spot by the chess board and raced down, ghosts in hot pursuit, to the front door. The knocking continued. Unlocking it, she swung the door open and stared out at the stranger.
“It’s Dan, right?” Alison gasped.
The stranger turned and lowered the hood of their coat, nodding and bundling inside quickly, glad to be out of the storm.
Dan shook out the rain from his greying hair and smiled at Alison, who was trying to switch on the nearest lamp, “Hi, yes, I’m Dan.”
He stretched out a polite hand and Alison finally got a chance to see his face, but could only gasp at him - the gasp reverberating amongst the ghosts also. This couldn’t be happening. It wasn’t possible.
The Captain grasped his swagger-stick, standing frozen alongside Julian, and felt his heart plummet into his stomach, if such a thing could happen to a dead man.
Dan was the spitting image of The Captain, just a few years younger and no moustache.
Cutting through the small silence was light footsteps on the stairs, quickly descending to the front door. Rachel reached the bottom, ghosts jumping out of her way, as she raced into Dan’s slightly damp arms. As the pair embraced - the group stared and stared.
“Good Lord.” The Captain muttered.
Well, this was certainly a new development.

hear me out: julian fawcett, disgraced mp, got better at interacting with the physical world as the seasons went on. hypothetically, with enough practice and determination, he could interact with the physical world with more than just his fingers. so imagine: julian (who has literally all the time in the world) realises he can use his legs to interact. with enough practice (because, again, he has literally all the time in the world), he eventually realises that, technically, he could probably keep his lower body in the physical world long enough to wear trousers. unfortunately, the first person who realises this is a horrified mike, watching his trousers float with no context at all because, well, who would think a sleazy man who'd never worked hard before in his life would work so hard in the afterlife to keep some trousers on for five seconds?
#i dont think this is articulated well but its taken me years for this to make some sense so !#yes i have been hoping this would be a scene at some point#never been more disappointed before in my life /lh#after years of not being able to wear pants i would go to that effort and im more lazy than julian so#i could see it happening?#bbc ghosts#julian fawcett#simon farnaby

an extensive list of hcs i have about labour mp!fanny button because if i can't draw her, I'm gonna talk about her:
Died in 1992 from a heart attack, moments after catching George in the act with two other men at a party (while she was fully dressed, he was not, and that got almost more buzz than her actual death, much to her chagrin)
She never lived in Button Manor, just attended a few parties and meetings there, and has no familial ties to Alison
Her father was a Tory MP so she was raised conservative and taught to be the perfect politician’s daughter, quiet and prim, and to never make a scene lest she damage her father’s image
But then he went and ruined it himself in a drunken stupor, making their family a laughing stock
She later went into politics herself but turned to Labour, determined to fix what her father had ruined
(it’d probably make more sense for her to also be a Tory but shhh, let me have this. Also, yes, this backstory is very rachel fawcett inspired)
She became known as ‘that very scary labour lady who will catch you out in a lie and who has made at least one reporter cry'
She married George just for the sake of appearances, and while she didn’t care that he went around with men behind her back, she did care that he was sloppy about it and kept almost getting caught (again, because it’d look bad on her, the hapless idiot wife who married a man who doesn’t even like women)
They had one son, Roger. Fany didn’t like him, and the feeling was mutual. She saved her affection for her pets.
She smoked heavily out of stress, and does the same in death, having died with a cigarette on hand
Unfortunately, she also died with heels. When they get too much, she takes them off and just carries them around, walking around in her tights (though it takes her a good few years to be comfortable doing such a thing). I also think she should be allowed to throw them at the other ghosts when they’re being especially annoying
I like to imagine that she’s slightly less uptight and concerned with being ladylike in this au - she still has hangups about what one should and shouldn’t do, and certain hiccups from growing up in a Tory household, but like, she’s not living in the Edwardian era anymore, she’s a mildly more modern woman. And she was only supposed to behave to keep up her image, and that doesn’t really matter now that she’s dead.
She still thinks Alison’s tattoos are ugly though.
Post death, she likes to keep up with the news, both through the telly and newspapers, and always bugs Mike (the one who can see ghosts in this au) to go vote every year
Has personal beef with Thatcher. She will never explain what happened, but something definitely did.
Idk if she’d have Julian’s powers, but she could do. She’d deserved it.
She still has an interest in maths and from about sixteen took a vested interest in the family finances, trying to make sure her father didn’t completely bleed them dry. In death, she sometimes talks bank with Pat and I like to imagine them both getting very frustrated over the Cooper’s financial situation and trying to help in their own annoying way.

BBC Ghosts Characters + Their reactions to meeting you under the mistletoe
Characters: Thomas Thorne, Julian Fawcett, Kitty, Humphrey Bone
Tags/Warnings: Christmas, First Kiss, Mistletoe, Gender Neutral Reader.
A/N: Requested by an anon. The Thomas one is related to something that I've been writing, so I hope it doesn't completely ruin the fic when it comes out! As always, I hope you enjoy, and reblogs are appreciated!!
*
Thomas Thorne
Thomas is ecstatic when he realises you are both beneath the mistletoe. He's been planning for it all day, and he can't believe that it's finally happened. But when it comes time to actually kiss you, he actually finds himself feeling rather anxious. He hasn't kissed anyone in nearly 200 years, what if he doesn't even remember how to do it anymore?
When he's been silent for a while, you start to get worried and ask him what's wrong. He confesses his worries to you, he doesn't want your first kiss with him to be disappointing. You smile at him, and tell him it's okay if he's a bit out of practice, because so are you, and that you don't think that a kiss from him could ever be a disappointment. He smiles as well, takes your hands in his, and kisses you softly.
You're not really focusing on anything but Thomas, but you think you hear someone who sounds like Julian mumbling "Well it's about bloody time."
Julian Fawcett
"Well, well, would you look at that?" Julian says with a smug smile, pointing upwards to the mistletoe hanging off the doorframe. You look up, then back down at his face, and he waggles his eyebrows at you. You sigh and roll your eyes.
"We don't have to of course, but it is tradition." He's still staring at you, and a lot of conflicting emotions are stirring inside of you. He annoys the hell out of you sometimes, but...
You grab him by the shoulders and kiss him quickly, utterly irritated with yourself when you realise you actually enjoy it. When you pull away, you can't help but notice Julian's shocked expression, though when the surprise wears off he's quick to smirk.
He was never going to shut up about this.
Kitty
Kitty can't stop giggling when she sees the mistletoe above your heads. The tradition existed when she was alive but she never got a chance to participate in it. You smile at how giddy she seems at the whole idea, she's so adorable.
"Would you like to try it? I've never actually kissed anyone before, so..." she seems slightly nervous for a moment, but once you tell her you want to kiss her she looks like she might explode with excitement.
Kitty wastes no time pulling you close to her and kissing you, and you can still hear quiet giggling as she does so. She breaks away to look at you, grinning widely. "That was wonderful! Could we do it again?"
Humphrey Bone
Humphrey's body seems to be cooperating with him for now, so he enjoys getting to go wherever he wants in the house without having to rely on someone carrying his head. He's walking into the library when he bumps into you, and once again, his head falls off. Before it can hit the ground, you catch it and return it to its proper place. He thanks you, for what feels like the millionth time - unlike the other ghosts, you always helped when you found his head just lying there.
Both of you look up and see the mistletoe in the doorway. The tradition of kissing under it wasn't around when Humphrey was alive, but he'd heard about it from the younger ghosts, so he knows the implications. Your hands are still on his face from when you caught him, and neither of you are really quite sure what to do.
"Well, it's, uh..." he says, trying to break the awkward silence, but neither of you makes any move to leave. Eventually, you just shrug and think "what do I have to lose?" before leaning in to kiss him. It's not too long before you pull away, waiting to see his reaction. Humphrey looks flustered but he smiles, and you know that you made the right decision.

being alison's younger sister and seeing the ghosts:
(this is a fem!reader but lmk if you want gender neutral stuff too, also this is rlly long sorry i got so carried away)
(what event that led you to die for a bit and come back alive is up to you - car crash, falling over etc)
seeing ghosts is something that you’ve always dealt with ever since the accident but you've never told anyone, in a fear of being seen as unfit or crazy, y’know? so you’ve always kept it to yourself
and that is until you move into alison and mike’s big home after some money troubles (which you’re ever so thankful for) and as soon as you get out the car you see a group of people from different ages behind alison in the doorway
you’re trying ever so hard to ignore them when seeing alison again and her welcoming you in, but it kinda slips when you look towards thomas who has made some sort of romantic comment towards you and both alison and you look to him but alison catches you and is like ?!??!?!
“y-you can see them too?” alison asks and you really don't know what to say, there’s a silence before you just nod and you’re like “yeah. yeah i-i can, yeah” and then you explain everything to her and she tells you her story
when mike finds out you can see the ghosts too, man poor guy feels so left out and is like this is so unfair :((
a week or so pasts and now everyone knows each other and you’re all friends :D
alison is now happy and more comfortable as thomas no longer directs his comments to alison but now you, which you really don't mind at all and sometimes you’re honestly quite flattered
the captain quickly becomes one your best friends and he likes to be around you a lot as you listen to him and all his war stories and never shut him out, you enjoy his company and he really loves your company (he will never admit it though) but he feels comfortable around you
you like to go on walks around the grounds with him and just listen to him speak about whatever and such, just enjoying his company. you know he’s got a lot of feelings all bundled up inside and you catch onto his secret quickly, you let him know you’re always there for him if he needs
you always join in on the ghosts meetings or the talks they have set up for everyone - kitty always makes sure you sit next to her
kitty loves you a lot - often when doing your makeup or painting your nails you ask kitty what colour goes best and sometimes you even pretend to paint her nails or do her makeup telling her how beautiful she looks
people dont include humphrey a lot but whenever you do find his head you talk to him for a while and ask if you can do anything for him. sometimes you wish you could pick him up and carry him around, and keep him company more but you can't :( but he always appreciates when you sit with him for a bit
one night you find him on the roof and so you sit with him for a bit, looking at the stars and just telling him about your day and such
there’s one night where you are just having a horrible day feeling horrible about yourself and the way you look, and you’re sat staring into yourself in your vanity mirror. you’re a bit teary and just pulling yourself apart and thomas is suddenly in the doorway, and he’s like “if i may, have i told you how beautiful you are today, my dear y/n?”
and instead of jokingly telling him to go away, you smile at him, speaking softly “thanks thomas” he smiles back at you before walking off again.
but you quickly get out of the seat and rush to the corridor, “thomas” and he stops walking, his hands behind his back and looks at you before you walk closer to him, “i’d…i’d like to hear more from your poetry i-if you don't mind”
you two spend the next hour or so walking, just listening to thomas speak and the other ghosts just kinda look on at you two and are like aweeee:(( (my heart)
falling in love with ghosts is really a not a good idea
that time where alison and mike host a party and you are all completely drunk out of your mind, and even the ghosts are dancing with everyone, well just beware because julian will be dancing with you - mostly behind you but perhaps you don't hate that.. : )
whenever you come home from work, everyone is always excited to see you and they each wanna tell you about their day etc
alison and mike go on holiday just for a week, as an anniversary gift from you, so you’re basically left to babysit everyone for the week
its an interesting week, robin nearly burns the house down, you all lose humphrey (both his head and body) for a few days and cant find him, pat hosts a song competition,,, and well one ghosts proclaims their love for you and somehow tries to kiss you well yeah we can all guess probably who
fanny often complains about your outfits and how short some your skirts or whatever are and she just follows you around the house and is like, “THAT IS NOT APPROPRIATE! NO ONE SHOULD SEE A LADIES ANKLES!”
and your simply just trying to make a cup of tea, and alison gives you a sympathetic look as fanny is following your every move
the only ghost who doesn't mind you swearing is julian. sometimes his tory-ass will annoy you and you just give him the finger and tell him to f off, and he either laughs at you or is like “what did i do?”
the ghosts all support you in whatever hobby you have and always end up distracting you and asking you questions about it
and basically these guys are your best friends :))
if u want a part two let me know! or any request ideas for any ghosts i am down!! <3

Okay, imagine this... Thomas gets into a fistfight with Julian everything Julian makes an inappropriate comment about y/n in front of him. To the point where all the other ghosts don't care anymore and just roll their eyes and walk off when they start fighting.
Julian never stops making the comments and Thomas never stops defending his lady's honour, it's just unstoppable force meets unmovable object on a loop for the rest of eternity

Alison introducing you to the ghosts.
Of course when Alison told you she could see ghosts you were sure that your friend was a… to put it lightly, out of her freaking mind. But Ghosts of the Button House proved they were as real as you by pushing the cup off the table right in front of you.
A few days later you were ready to meet them, well, as much as it was possible in these circumstances. So now you were standing in Alison and Mike’s bedroom looking at the photographs and portraits of long dead people.
“And this is Pat, he was a scout leader, as you can see.” Alison introduced you to another photo. It was a picture of a chubby man in mustard-colored shirt and breeches. He had a mustache and a bright smile on his face.
“Aww he is adorable!” You cooed and smiled softly. You looked up at Alison and noticed that she was looking somewhere to her right.
She suddenly let out a humorous chuckle, rolling her eyes a little and said to someone invisible “Kitty, I don’t have a picture of you yet, so I don’t know what they think of you. When I find one, I’ll show you to Y/n, promise.”
You were frightened. Especially after all the comments you so fearlessly said about each ghost. “They’re…” you hoarse, throat suddenly dry and eyes wide. “They’re here? They can hear me?” You felt your face burn with embarrassment. Alison laughed heartily. “Oh, yeah, they can. By the way Captain and Pat thank you for the compliments." She paused for a moment and added" Oh, and Lady Button as well, she says you have beautiful eyes as well, my dear."
