I hate how they keep trying to bring Mark and Lexi back together. Mark is finally with someone age appropriate that wants to have a family with him. Hell the dude is thinking about asking Julia to move in with him. If he's not inlove with her. He clearly likes her a lot. He's in a real relationship. Lexi has broken up with Mark over the same issue twice now, she clearly isn't ready for children or starting a family. I really wish they would of had her say she's happy for him. Instead of getting jealous and wanting him back. This ship is so.. 🙄
Also her trash talking Julia and calling her old is so mean when Mark is literally the same age if not older than Julia.

The afternoon before flying to Belgium, I was sitting in a brewery bar (surprise) investigating a beer I knew G would be interested in. The brewery’s marketing director was sitting a few seats down. I didn’t know she was the marketing director, I assumed she was the bar manager as she had a laptop open in front of her.
Once I’d tried the special release, aged in amburana barrels, she asked me how I liked it. I did like it and told her my son would like it so I was hoping to take him some if possible. She said they hadn’t bottled any and their crowler machine (bar canner) wasn’t working. Then she surprised me by bringing me a can of a different special beer not due to be released until the next day.
I’d been texting with G the whole time and told her he was thrilled. He wondered if I could bring her something back from Belgium. She said she was really into smoked beers. I was surprised. Not that she liked smoked beers but that she’d ask for one from Belgium. Germany sure. Scandinavia probably. Even America is brewing smoked beer. But Belgium isn’t known for it. It is known for amazing world class and highly sought after beer I could easily bring back. No, she wanted a smoked beer.
Yesterday we stopped into the largest bottle shop in the area, called the Drink Factory. It was overflowing and overwhelming in the amount and variety of Belgian beer the prices were a fraction of what I’d pay in the states if/when I could find them. We found so much interesting beer including one named Urine and one possibly made atop a mountain of cats but in the whole shop we found only one smoked beer.
Slightly smoked for people with guts…lol. So Julia will get a Belgian smoked beer for people with guts.

February 2023 Tour
So some of the maintenance we did on our 11 year old RV: replace part of a rotted slide-out floor, paint the yellowed ceiling fixtures, get front seat covers, a new driver’s side window, install a microwave over-the-stove, replace the 2 house batteries, "new" mattress and just scrub and touch-up everything. We took it to Henkel's RV Sales August 9, knowing it was off-season for RV sales. . . it is still there! We were hoping it would sell around the time of the big RV show in Tampa, but that's been a few weeks ago. . . It’s still in good shape; as Shorty said, “Nobody’s got any money now.”
Closing on our house was July 22, 2022. We found a G.E. dishwasher at an outlet store in Clearwater, a G.E. stove at an estate sale, and fridge, washer and dryer at Lowe's. By the time we got the mattresses, shower curtains, and things you need to live, our first night in the house was July 29. We still had to commute to Holiday to finish working on the RV at our tired senior pace. We decided we're going to die here, because we're too old to move again. . . we were so worn out. But dang, we're loving it here!
We continued commuting (about 35 miles each way) to see Shorty most weeks; a few times he came up to see us at the house.
The first two things I cooked in the new house were sheet pan chicken/taters/ corn on the cob and chicken parm on the sheet pan. After 10 years with an RV oven, I had a heuge two-shelfer and two giant sheet pans I had been dying to use. I had been collecting recipes from Julia Pacheco, my fav You-Tube home cook, for about a year. To Corny's (and Bob's) delight, I have been cooking up a storm! I also started a little canning. I have wanted sodium-free beans for a long time - and the pressure canner takes them from dried, right outta the bag to squishy soft in 40 minutes.
^stuffed Manicotti
Corny watched and I re-watched Breaking Bad on one of the many TVs we've found in storage auctions. This one came with a guest subscription to Netflix. We watched "Better Call Saul". He was Corny's favorite character. I've always loved Bryan Cranston. Then we watched all the Jurassic Park movies.
Here's a little tour. The walls are a very light grey; flooring is grey vinyl:
^This is where I have my oatmeal with Piggie and Poco
Master bed and bath:
Life of Christ cross - all the little boxes were delivered to Shorty's house over the past year and accumulated in storage. It was like Christmas, opening them all up and displaying them!
Bedroom 1, Den and bath 2:
Poco got a cute little 2' fence surrounding the patio. Corny doesn't worry so much about him wandering away now.
Backyard visitors: flock of 6 wild turkeys, pond turtle
Fledgling woodpecker chatted with me and clung to my leg for several minutes when I went to pick up my bedside dresser.
Without gutters yet, when hurricane Ian headed our way in September, we made two trips to a county park to fill sandbags. Some young, energetic people took pity on us old, slow-moving, moaning people and helped us haul the heavy bags to the Jeep. Corny made a few bucks selling flashlights and lanterns he had gotten on clearance months ago, thanks to Ian.
In November I did a big 2-week Georgia county run. I only got the Jeep stuck once, in mud covered by leaves. A Lumpkin County Sheriff had me out within minutes. I have about 1/3 of GA counties to visit:
On Thanksgiving Shorty brought Bob up to the house. They arrived at 5pm; the turkey finished at 7:30pm. I made real gravy for the first time in decades.
Corny had some kidney procedures in November, then found himself in the hospital for an infection in December.
Shorty told us on Dec. 1 he was moving "up north". He heard rumors that Hyundai was hiring contractors to do his job so he promptly took his 3 weeks vacation. When he went back to see if he was on the schedule, they were like "Who are you?". He had worked there 10 1/2 years. We were so glad they did what we couldn't - kick him in the pants so he would get a better job. The little shit decided to move to Elkhart, Indiana to be able to afford a house of his own. We miss him - my life has certainly changed. I would plan all week what to bring him or ask him or tell him. But we are very happy for him to be out on his own and experiencing real freedom for the first time. He left for Elkhart Dec. 3 so now we just text.
We didn't have much notice, so Christmas was basically cancelled. We went to Buffet City on Christmas Eve. I made 4# of candied pecans to send up north and give to the neighbors and Liam - Shiloh Builders' Number Two. They are building a house right next door which Chick, the owner of Shiloh, is going to live in part time. They are using the garage as their office.
I threw a tapestry over the TV for Christmas.
Corny scored a home run and got me a Kitchen Aid accessory that peels, cores and slices an apple all at the same time! I made my first apple pie since I was 20-something years old. I was always too impatient to peel apples.
We continue going to storage auctions. The latest score was an entire tub of Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon cards. I went through them all to check for the big buck$ cards. There weren't any. When I get back from BamaRama (GC9TB1Z) I will list them on Facebook Marketplace for prolly $20/box.
Life is Godd!
We fit out.

You could probably do worse than a procedural starring Papadelias and Martin at the center of a Special For Reasons of Sensitive Politics crimes unit- start by selling the illusion of standard golden-age sci fi and then introduce the subversive weirdness inch by inch. Spend a few seasons foreshadowing and gradually revealing the sheer magnitude of the systemic corruption at play- introducing Madame, Julia, and the O.S. as season-headlining villains that never get truly resolved and that force the powers that be to reign in the Special For Reasons unit just enough to keep them from doing any kind of justice; at first, Martin is the one who tells Papa to keep faith in the system through this frustration, but later, it reverses. JEDD is occasionally foreshadowed as a child in the early seasons, but plays a more active role starting in season 4 that kicks off a will-they-won't-they about Martin's growing disillusionment with the Special For Reasons division and ultimate decision to throw in with JEDD instead, and by the climactic season 5, the once-close Martin and Papa are now working at institutional cross-purposes, each nursing a sense of betrayal and loss for the friendship while they race in parallel to be the first ones to solve the gruesome Canner Murders...
for the bit i think they should make an adaptation of too like the lightning that's pretty generic modern sci-fi, fine but extremely tame, maybe from the perspective of martin or carlyle, but good enough that people will be compelled to read the book of the tv show they like
and they get to meet mycroft canner

terra ignota causing/solving problems alignment chart
hmm still under construction, but I love how purposeful everyone in this series is. we might be fucking up, but we’re doing so with INTENT!
pls assume there’s an implied BRIDGER superimposed over every quadrant.
(another graph was a LOT easier when I substituted “problems” for “war” (: problems are vague, but war is specific!)
img description under the cut; tumblr cuts you off at 200 chars, and that’s about how many characters it felt like i tried to put on this chart:
chart titled “I’M GOING TO...” with “cause problems/solve problems” on the y-axis, and “on accident/on purpose” on the x-axis, populated with different characters from Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota series.
The “on accident” quadrants are very empty; in “cause problems on accident” we have Spain (close to the intercept), Cato Weeksbooth (in the middle range), and Carlyle Foster (in the extreme of both values). The only “solve problems on accident” person is Heloïse, but she’s pretty close to the intercept too.
Mycroft Canner is at 0,0; he is doing all things all at once, good for him. Cornel MASON and J.E.D.D. Mason are at the problems-intercept, but quite purposeful, with J.E.D.D. even more so than Cornel.
“Cause problems on purpose” has, in increasing order of extremeness: Dominic, Saladin, Ganymede, Danaë, Julia D-P, Tully Mardi (if u ask Mycroft), Felix Faust, Cookie, Sniper (close to the problems-intercept, but EXTREMELY purposeful), and Madame in the super-extreme of both intervals.
“Cause problems on accident” has Ando close-ish to the problems intercept, and not very purposeful) and Tully Mardi (if u ask Tully) very far oriented towards “solve problems” but not as purposeful as the following two stacks. First, quite-purposeful and increasing in amount of problem-solving: Bryar Kosala, Lesley Saneer, Eureka Weeksbooth, and Vivien Ancelet. Then, EXTREMELY purposeful and increasing in amount of problem-solving: Achilles, Prospero, Martin & Xiaoliu Guildbreaker, and at the absolute pinnacle of “I am going to solve problems on purpose”: Papa.
#terra ignota#terra ignota spoilers#because you don't meet all these characters straight away#and thank goodness for that there's a whole stable of them!#thank you for your time hahaha#typing up the desc is making me kinda wanna rework some of these placements but ah well everything under the sun is imperfect#love these extremely purposeful disasters#i think i will cause problems on purpose meme#*boops each character on the nose*#with apologies to the Utopians because i couldn't in good conscience put them on the same chart as all the rest of these folks

The Will to Battle by Ada Palmer
Rating: ★★
Many thanks to Macmillan, Tor and NetGalley for the copy of this book.
More like a 2.5 star rating but really, I'm not adding a full star on for 10% of a book. How long ago Too Like the Lightning seems. How much I loved that book, how much I wanted to get stuck right into the story. How little I trusted Mycroft Canner to tell an impartial story, how much I trusted Ada Palmer to stick a landing. How completely caught up I was into the world-building, how diverse and interesting everything felt. How much The Will to Battle disappointed me. After the explosive events and reveals of Seven Surrenders , I was absolutely ready to jump straight into the next book. I spoke in my last review that I wasn't sure how the final book would fit in, but it transpires that The Will to Battle and Perhaps the Stars are a duology, to mirror the first two books. In a way, this definitely explains the absolute cliffhanger of an ending (even if the reveal that Mycroft isn't actually dead seriously ruins it and I see absolutely no reason for it) but it doesn't excuse the massive bloat that comes before. I almost feel like Palmer is going to excruciatingly great lengths to make sure we hate all the characters that she spent two books bigging up for us: Mycroft is now nearly unbearable on the page, Dominic's every scene is basically a cringefest of slavish devotion, Madame should have never made it out of Seven Surrenders alive, JEDD is now basically so insufferable that it's a miracle I didn't throw my Kindle across the room and this is without even touching on the Hive leaders. It's clear that Palmer knows her Philosophy and History, that they're her strong points and she enjoys displaying that knowledge. But where the fourth wall between the reader and Mycroft was broken rarely and to great effect in the first two books, now the interruptions are just that: interruptions. Having the Reader, Mycroft and Thomas Hobbes debate the events of the book not only takes you straight out of the narrative, but it also completely turns into another opportunity to Palmer to flex her knowledge, often to deleterious effects (look, I get it, you're genuinely clever, you know what you're doing, but we knew this beforehand! We're on book 3, we don't need you to continue flexing your extensive knowledge). This also happens in large set pieces, where one character (usually, but not always JEDD), bloviates on a given topic for several pages: the Senate for example feels like it could have been cut by a good editor and not much would have been lost. And this is the main detraction: for a book about Hives preparing for war, it doesn't feel like much actually happens. Instead we have scenes that don't really connect to each other, all suffused with opportunities for characters to give rousing speeches but... without any actual connection to the plot. The impressive world Palmer spent time building up throughout Too Like the Lightning, the interesting connections and ethical quandaries of Seven Surrenders, all fall to the wayside so instead we have cardboard cutouts recite their lines and then disappear off stage until they're next needed. We should also talk about JEDD: does seriously no one else question that he is 100% Madame's creature and not some actual "God"? Why does everyone just accept this as truth? I don't just mean the Hive leaders here (clearly their ability to "subvert the subverted gender roles" or whatever is enough of a draw for them to just go with her plan), I mean the regular people in Hives or otherwise. Everyone just buys the line of JEDD as God as if it's well, gospel. So either Mycroft is lying or everyone in Palmer's world has taken stupid pills between the second and third books and decided to just completely buy in to everything. My own hunch is that JEDD is not a God, far from it: that like Danae and Ganymede he is a creature of Madame's making and that no matter what, he will be exposed for a fraud. Which leads me neatly to Bridger. The events at the end of Seven Surrenders were almost magical in appearance and the existence of Achilles in The Will to Battle does lend credence to it. Unlike others, I'm not really convinced as to whether Bridger's 'powers' were real or not. There is a part of me that seriously feels that the existence of actual magic or even a real God will cheapen the entire experience and I have a feeling that there won't really be any explanation for this. I hope I am wrong, because it feels like Palmer doesn't want to provide all the answers, but equally I don't feel that she's really dropping hints here and there and if Mycroft is the only person to actually provide the narrative, then really I'm not expected to actually believe him, am I? I really hope Perhaps the Stars actually ties up all the narrative threads and gives a satisfying conclusion, but the way this book played out doesn't give me much hope. We should also talk about the women of Palmer's world. For something that wants to subvert gender so much (and okay, the use of pronouns does help with a bit of that, especially when they clearly don't match physical representations of the characters), the three women who embrace, for lack of a better world, their femininity, are all pretty much one-dimensional and evil: Julia, Thisbe and Madame all rely on "female wiles" to get their way, in a way that cheapens what Palmer comes across as wanting to portray. It's boring. It's unoriginal. It's not even trying to subvert a "femme fatale" archetype, it's leaning into it to the point where most of them become interchangeable. It feels like there was some intent here, but it hasn't really played out quite the way that Palmer intended. It should also be said that in all the scenes where one character or another spends page upon page expounding on some philosophical dilemma, it's the male (or male coded) characters who speak. Madame flounces about or faints, Thisbe is all but absent except for two scenes and Julia is a non-entity. Finally, for how much it gets hyped up and how much hinges on it, the trial of Ockham is a complete and utter disappointment. Over in practically a chapter, with basically not much said about it. Which I feel quintessentially sums up The Will to Battle. There is a part of me that isn't sure about whether I'll continue with the series. On the one hand, there is just the final book left but on the other hand if it's anything like this one, I will probably DNF it well before the end. I'm sorry Ada Palmer, but a good 10% doesn't make up for the rest of the 90% being that... pointless.

terra ignota for the ask meme :)
Every one of yous is a valid <3
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) - obviously my blorbo is Sniper. I think about them every day. I wake up full of strength and read Sniper's chapter etc. Orbo Slorbo from my government assassins.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) - 9A honestly I have such a huge fondness for them and they are so very little.
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) - Vivien Ancelet, best dad, best accountant. He speaks Spanish bad and I love that for him <3
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) - Kat and/or Robin Typer!! Mostly Kat for the 19th century spiritualist double-think, but also Robin for the bikes. They were mentioned exactly one time in PTS and I went fucking OFF.
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) - okay I have a bit of a problem with this definition of a poor little meow meow. Poor little meow meows, as I first learned it, was the most fucked up little guy, problematic murder bastard, who was also just all extremely pathetic. And like, Mycroft Canner is TEXTBOOK meow meow. When I first learned the definition i was like oh it's Mycroft Canner. He is what all other meow meows base themselves off. This isn't even a personal preference this is just fact.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) - Also Mycroft Canner. You'd think after four books I'd be tired of Mycroft's torment but I'm not it's good every time. I'm also partial to tormenting Dominic for blorbo reasons.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) - Julia fuckin Doria-Pamphili. Also for blorbo reasons, and also because I feel like every other character in the series who betrayed me at least like acknowledged that they did bad things in a complicated war scenario? Julia actively did evil things for fun and she can't comprehend that she's done a bad thing and also never fucking faced consequences for anything. the only reason she did a single good deed in her life is because Carlyle is suicidal and thatse it. I hate her so much, I want her dead.
I feel like these were all very obvious choices for me
