Veilguard Modern AU.

Lucanis Dellamorte is a doctor in a family of doctors for generations or some such thing.

His specialization: heart surgeon.

All this so he can deadpan tell people “I stab others for a living” if asked about his job.

Alectris is a mage, but she nearly became a Templar! She comes from a Laetan family with nearly exclusively magic wielding people in it. She didn’t show any signs of magic by 8 so her parents decided in the second best thing she could be and sent her off to become a Templar with the Order. The Templars might not be the same up in Tevinter as they are in The South but it’s always better to have someone form the family on the inside.

Shes spent 4 years learning basic drills, practical skills and about the Imperial Chant until she had a bit of an accident during one of the drills that resulted blazing death of 6 straw-dummies and a lost of her left eyebrow.

While being a mage is quite rather preferable in Tevinter over being… I guess anything else Alecteis sometimes regrets she didn’t get to remain magic-free.

What about Liselath? Any regrets from the past or just general trivia you didn’t get to talk about?

Tell me about your Rooks 🫶🏻

Hello again! I’m currently finishing the last four chapters of my masters thesis and the only thing that keeps me going is reading about your Rooks

(Jk I have many things that keep me going but I love reading about them either way 😉)

My request today is vague: Tell me something about your Rook that you haven’t gotten to talk about yet! (Or talk enough about/have developed further!)

Some ideas if you’re stumped:

What does their name mean/represent? Who gave them it and why? Ex: Liselath translates/means “Beloved child who warms our house” Which conveys how much her parents loved her 😭 and her relationship to Sylaise.

Do they have a complicated relationship with anyone (from the team or in their past)

Do they have any tricks/talents they can pull out when everyone’s drunk at a party? Ex: While camping, my dad once surprised us by being able to play the accordion. We had no idea.

I’m out traveling and thinking about the Them. Them being Alectris and Lucanis of course because what else could I be doing.

I’m thinking how they go from strangers to friends to Lucanis knowing he has a crush and actively telling himself it’s a terrible idea for about 43682 reasons and Alectris just trying to power through this “nonsense” through sheer force of will and enough copium to kill a man.

She’s a perfectly reasonable adult, I promise.

Rate Your OC Traits

No tags for me on this one, but I felt like yapping, so I'm gonna steal this one and just run with it. HAHAHHAH you cannot stop me.

Finally getting some proper Alectris screenshots too on a new play through :D

Compassion: 6/10 — she tends to be a lot more understanding and compassionate towards people she knows than strangers. She wouldn’t go out of her way to make anyone’s life significantly worse, but she’d rarely get herself involved to make it much better either. At least without a reason. 

Bitterness: 4/10 — Alectris is not exactly bitter about things, she has her regrets and disappointments, but dwelling on those never really did anything useful for her, so she just learned to move on. Most of her bitterness is related to her family and the state of their relationship. 

Happiness: 3/10, pre-veilguard, she’s mostly drifting and surviving, not really living and definitely not thriving. She has Kios and the shop to take care of and a contract with Shadows here and there to keep her from spiraling completely, but she was not happy. 7/10, post-veilguard, she still has some hang-ups to work through, but at least she’s on a good way. 

Chivalry: 4/10 — She can and will, begrudgingly, behave appropriately in formal situations, but will drop any pretenses real fast. She dislikes formalities, titles and acting in overly courteous ways. 

Pride: 7/10 — Alectris is a walking contradiction when it comes to pride. She has a massive imposter syndrome and is permanently feeling the need to prove herself, but at the same time she’d eat her shoes before asking for help or advice. She believes she’s capable of handling everything herself (often true, but gods, at what cost) and she certainly projects a picture of a very proud person to others, especially at first. 

Honesty: 4/10 — she tends to skew towards lying and avoiding whenever anything personal comes up. She has no issues lying to people if she thinks it’s better to keep them in the dark or if it’s in a direct gain to her or her job. She will give a genuine honest opinion however if asked for it and will not sugarcoat when giving a report. 

Bravery: 8/10 — give her a reason to care and she will fight for it to the last. She tends to understand and accept the dangers of being a soldier, supporting the Shadow Dragons or fighting the gods and she will not stand back once she picks something up. But ask her to speak to her parents and you might get a very different reaction. 

Recklessness: 8/10 — she’s not entirely reckless, especially if others are involved. Her personal sense of self-preservation? Barely existing. 

Ambition: 6/10 — She’s a rather ambitious person, desiring to prove herself. Strictly before Veilguard however she’s been on a massive downward spiral. 

Loyalty: 8/10 — it’s not so easy to earn her loyalty, but once it’s there, hard to shake it off. She tends to excuse warning signs however and is willing to turn a blind eye to a lot. Until a certain point. 

Love: 5/10 —she’s capable of being warm and loving, especially to her young nephews and nieces, or to her close friends, but it’s something reserved for a select few. 

Sense of family: 5/10 — It’s complicated but she craves the sense of belonging. She’s not getting that from her family exactly because her need to belong is trampled by her stubborn refusal to conform to demands of Teviner high society, so she latches on to what she can in exchange. For better or for worse. 

Attractiveness: 4/10 — to be entirely honest she’s kinda mid-looking, not really ugly, but not very pretty either. She has rather broad shoulders for a mage and slightly too long arms/ legs to torso ratio and she’s too aware of it at most times. 

Agility: 7/10 — Alectris is more about brute force than agility, but she can scale walls and jump through the roofs in Treviso without making too much of a clown out of herself. 

Sex drive: 3/10 — it comes and goes, but usually she’s not really too much into that whole sex thing

I may have finally decided to play Hades. I am... exceptionally bad at it? The characters are really fun however so I'll probably try to die a couple hundred more times to see what else they can tell me.

For today I think Skelly is trying to speak to my single writing brain cell.

The Veilguard screenshots will soon return! And by soon I mean tomorrow. I stopped the queue kind of by mistake and thought I'll just let this go, but I still have a bunch of them saved up, so might as well continue throwing them out into the void.

There's going to be some writing coming too! I would really want to get through all the Rook Story Time prompts.

I'll be in Italy next week! Pretty excited even if I didn't even start packing yet ;_;

Gonna give answers for Hugo de Riva (because he's the current Rook I'm playing) and for Alectris (who is not a Rook, but I love her anyway)

🌼 If someone was to ask Spite what Rook smells like, what would he say?

Hugo: Despite his gear being in pristine condition these days, Hugo somehow always smells like rust according to Spite, rust and salt water. Hugo suspects it might be some leftovers of his childhood spent diving for pearls in docks of Rialto. Back then he didn't have much but an old pairing knife that despite his best efforts was always rusty and barely sharp enough to do it's job.

Alectris: Alectris smells like hot coals and nutmeg and sand on the beach right after rain. She insists she has no clue where she got any of these ideas, but truth is she just hates how it all makes sense. She might see herself as a soldier first and mage second but fire has always been her go to type of magic, nutmeg might as well be the only thing that Seheron has not soured for her and the smell of the beach after rain is the first sensation that comes to her mind when she thinks of that one time she nearly died.

🍀 Has Rook had any near-death experiences? What went through their mind during what they thought was going to be their final moments?

Hugo: As a Crow Hugo has a very skewed idea about what experiences count as "near-death" but when he was a freshly promoted full-fledged Crow he got a contract on a sommelier. He ended up drinking his own poison to trick the mark into believing the wine is safe. He did drink an antidote before hand but much to Viago's disappointment poisons were never his strong suit and he nearly offs himself as well. His thoughts at the time? "Maker, if Viago hears about it he'll never let it go."

Alectris: Alectris has brushed with death a couple of times mostly during her time on Seheron, but the closest call she had was during a Qunari ambush including a Saarebas. Her last thoughts at that time were about her team and if any of them made it alive (a few did!).

Shoutout to that one friend you can chat with endlessly about DA and who shares key updates about DAV without spoiling the game :D Check out what Jukkari came up with! A super cool, independent OC that fits perfectly into Thedas' events! I'm excited to hear more about Alectris' adventures - and also about the possibility of yapping about the new game and the characters we'll play :D I've been steering clear of all the buzz around DAV - avoiding spoilers and info as much as possible to experience Veilguard without any preconceived notions or expectations. Can’t wait for its release. I’ve been a massive DA fan since DAO came out - just been keeping it low-key ^^

DA4 - Rook/ OC - Alectris

You know what, I'm gonna be a bit insane on here. Tagging as spoiler, just in case, but it's mostly just info dump on a character that's probably not even gonna be Rook really but a separate OC.

I thought her up initially last year and now with all the DATV things coming up she's been taking up most of my brainpower.

Details under the cut, ask me anything I guess?

Name: Alectris (possibly will stick with Mercar, it's a good surname me thinks)

Nickname: Tris

Age: 29

Nationality: Tevinter

Family: Comes from a Laetan family

Long standing mage family but with no confirmed links with the ancient dreamers, so they never made it to Altus status

5th child

Her siblings are all older than she is, 2 sisters and 2 brothers

Looks: Rather tall at 178 cm Alectris is average build, yet quite physically strong for a mage. With slightly off torso to arms and legs proportions, people sometimes compare her to a young foal. She has fair skin with freckles, which are most common on her face and shoulders, but can be found on her whole body. 

Her shoulder length dark brown hair usually in a semi up-do to keep them from falling over her eyes. She has brown-amber eyes.

Skills:

(Based on the mage skill tree and whatever the heck i want) Primarily a spell blade, front line combatant using sword and casting shields.

Skilled elemental mage, primarily focused on lightning magic with fire to fill in the mix.

Crap at hexes and couldn't heal a paper cut if her life depended on it.

Personality

Alectris is rough around the edges. Witty and sharp, she prefers to deflect personal questions with sarcasm instead of addressing her feelings head on, very much unlike her approach to pretty much anything else in her life. She's resilient and focused when needed, but needs a goal to channel her energy into or she becomes restless and apathetic. Pragmatic and self-sufficient she tends to prefer simple solutions that she can count on herself to complete.

In the field she tends to favor group effort, after years of military service, she has learned the value of a good team that she can rely on. A front line fighter she specializes in close combat and shields to keep her team out of harm.

Background

Alectris has managed to fumble through most of her early life with a mix of bad luck and surprising resilience.

The youngest child in the family, she didn't produce any magic until the "ripe old" age of 11, making it the latest in the recent family memory.

She's been taught at home since then with barely any breaks to catch-up to her peers and when deemed satisfactory she has joined the circle of magi in Vyrantium by the age of 15, where she's remained for the next 4 years with mixed results. While determined and sharp, she's excelled in evocation magic, but fell short in most other fields like hexes and healing, making her a rather uninteresting protege. As she was aging out of the circle slowly without the scientific inclination her family has decided to push her towards military service. If she could not support the family's good standing by her apprenticeship she could at least show their devotion to Tevinter at the border.

After signing up she's done her first 4 years by various imperial borders, spending most of her time by Nevarra and Anderfels. Faced with either returning to the capital and her parents who would see her join the nobility on the salons or signing up for another military contract she chose the latter, this time initially stationed by the Free Marches she ended up sent to Seheron where she's spent nearly 2 years, fighting for Tevinter.

By the end of the second year there was not much left in her to give thus, ultimately she's been discharged at 27 and sent back to her family in Minrathous, where shortly after her return they've made sure to parade her around as a proof of their devotion to the country. Having already lost nearly third of her life for the service, Alectris fails to blend in with the socialite, who are either too arrogant or too stupid for her tastes, while they in turn see her as someone too brutish for their refined sensibilities.

About 2 years pass by the time Solas' ritual happens and Tris feels disconnected from both her fellow soldiers by the nature of her background and the higher society by the lack of shared experiences. At this juncture she finds herself drawn to both Lucerni in the magisterium and the Shadow Dragons as a means of carving out some space for herself in the world that does not seem to be used to people in her position.
