Mr. Ye, watch out, the soup might be poisoned. WOH, episode 17, part 8. YBY is still arrogant in his conversation with the others. WKX, in response to the praise of his soup, asks YBY how come no one has killed him yet. YBY replies that he is good at martial arts and starts laughing. ZZS tells YBY to watch out, because the soup might be poisoned. YBY replies that ZZS ate his. This statement amuses ZZS who starts laughing sincerely. Meanwhile, at the GC residence, ZJ has organized a meeting in the main hall. Dressed in bright, mourning-like robes, ZJ approaches the seat occupied by GC. He asks the invited cult leaders to sit down and make themselves comfortable. The leaders, not very aware of what might happen, take their seats. ZJ asks where the leaders of the Jujing Gang and Purple Wave Cove are. One of the leaders stands up and calls them scoundrels and states that they have turned their backs on them. He adds that they are spreading the word that they are leaving the Alliance and will never return to it. ZJ states that when problems arise in the Five Lakes Alliance, it is inevitable that some will lose trust in them. He adds that this is natural. One of the leaders, leaning towards ZJ, states that he is too generous. He says that what these scoundrels did, the oath they took when they joined the Alliance, they treat like sugar cane. He states that they have extracted all the sweetness from it and now they want to spit it out. He adds that they have benefited for so many years and now they want to leave when there are problems. The leader of another sect says that in the long history of the Five Lakes Alliance, there has never been a case of a leader cooperating with an evil sect to kill his brother. ZJ says that they still have no confirmation that the former leader cooperated with Ghost Valley. He states that accusing their brother of murder is a serious matter. ZJ further says that people outside the hammer can speculate as much as they want, but they cannot cause confusion in their ranks. The first leader to speak points out that a few days ago, those who tore GC's body apart died in terrible agony. He asks if this isn't enough evidence that Ghost Valley is taking revenge for GC's death. Then he asks the others if he's right. The second sect leader explains that a brother from the Kongtong Sect was killed by Happy Ghost. Sun Zhong from the Eagle Claw Sect was killed in the middle of the street. Sixteen disciples from the Iron Fist Sect died in the inn. He adds that one word was carved on their chests, taken together they create one message: if you kill one of our men, we will destroy your entire sect. The Ghosts from Qingya Mountain will take revenge. He states that currently everyone in Jianghu is terrified. YBY is still behaving arrogantly, so ZZS wants to teach him a lesson, but it doesn't quite work out. ZJ calmly explains his suspicions about GC's cooperation with Ghost Valley. He knows that Scorpion has removed the people he indicated. ZJ is just waiting for someone else to present that Ghost Valley is behind all this. And he is doing it perfectly. The current leaders are just listening to this news. ZJ doesn't have to do anything. Just wait until the title of Jianghu leader falls into his hands.

Starkhaven..... worldbuilding........👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀

Like to info dump for a second, scratch all the Knight Errant comic art that you saw depicting Starkhaven. According to the books/lore, Starkhaven is an opulent city-state, adorned with golden fountains, water features, marble, and granite walkways leading all the way to the palace. The palace itself is enormously wealthy. The whole city is. Aesthetics are well cared for and meticulously maintained, almost like an emerald.

That fortress in Knight Errant? bleh !! Look at all that beige.

First of all, waterways flow through the city. They’re as much a part of Starkhaven’s atmosphere as the walls themselves. Due to the geographical valley tilt as well as the green grassy hills (which are explicitly said to be a part of the inside of the city), I imagine one giant moat on the outer most ring with irrigation running up and down through the walls. Which, while I’m mentioning walls, according to the description, are more reminiscent of Hakka Houses which are a particular village design found in Southern China.

Though I have no doubt it would be like a Hakka House expanded to the size of a city, with varying tiers based on class/wealth. For example, (architectural design of houses aside,) a wealthy residential in Starkhaven may look like this. I assume the higher you are the more natural the features are, as well as the more it costs to maintain it. (Think the Earth Kingdom from ATLA, these inspired it!)

So out with the beige, gross, concrete-like fortress of nightmares. In with the fairytale, too good to be true, sheltered living of Starkhaven citizens!

This is the first part of the innovative cooperation-, exchange- and exhibition project between ID:I Galleri – a non-commercial art space in Stockholm, run by artists and DAS ESSZIMMER – space for art+ in Bonn.

The artist curators Alexander Mood and Annelie Wallin from ID:I will take over DAS ESSZIMMER during 4 weeks, showing 10 artists and artist collectives in a group show. Additionally they set up a program of 3 Video Screenings, running on different days.

In the second part of the project DAS ESSZIMMER moves for 4 weeks to Stockholm during July / August where it takes over the ID:I space.

NEWS: From Paper Gallery

May could very well be one of PAPER’s busiest months to date with new exhibitions, international art fairs and offsite projects, so join us for an exhilarating month!

PAPER will be participating in Art Fair Suomi 2017 in Helsinki, presenting the work of Vincent James.  Vincent will be undertaking a 3 week residency in the city before exhibiting new collage and animations at the fair. Preceeding that, PAPER will also be in Athens for Platforms Project 2017. In collaboration with 5 other artist-led projects, Foreign Affairs 2 presents the work of 5 artist/curators across 5 Platforms. PAPER will present Linda Weiss and JuJe Collective will show PAPER director, David Hancock.

Our collaboration with Kir Royal Gallery, Madrid continues throughout May. Sobre Fragmentos Y Materia is a two person show of PAPER’s Lisa Denyer alongside Argentinian artist, Valeria Maculan.Lisa Denyer also features in PAPER magazine this month discussing the Kir Royal exhibition and life in Berlin.

The exhibition, for space, brings together a group of artists who emphasise and consider the exploration and excavation of space through various approaches to drawing. For each individual artist, drawing is processed through encountering, researching, and engaging with architecture and objects in the physical and virtual realms. Their works address the textural, sensory, and durational nature of psychological space, as well as the historical recording of plotted space.

Art Fair: Vincent James @ Art Fair Suomi 2017

For Art Suomi, PAPER will present the work of Vincent James. Vincent will be embarking upon a 3-week residency in Helsinki, making new work to show in a solo exhibition representing PAPER at Art Fair Suomi ’17. Vincent plans to create new stop-motion animation using the venue of Art Fair Suomi, The Cable Factory.  The residency is supported by both PAPER and MUU Gallery, Helsinki.

Art Fair: PAPER presents Linda Weiss in Foreign Affairs 2, Platform Projects Athens

20-25 May 2017 Platforms Project 2017 Cultural Centre (Charilaou Trikoupi 121, Athens 11473 Greece)

Five International artist-led art initiatives have collaborated to present each other’s creative art practice. A cross-cultural collaboration that explores the relationship between the artist as curator, as artist. A unique project curating across borders, highlighting the presence of the artist-led approach in contemporary art.

PAPER will present Berlin-based artist, Linda Weiss. Linda will create an installation of photographic prints under the title Wahala. The term ‘Wahala’ refers to the Nigerian pidgin English term, ‘trouble’ or ‘terrible mess’. The origin of the term is thought to have derived from Arabic. Linda Weiss references this term as the title of a constructed narrative made up of a number of serendipitous moments in New York’s Wall Street: A chance meeting of an African-American Wall Street professional, The Occupy Wall Street Demonstration in 2011, and a shooting at Trump Tower. These disparate elements form an ongoing plot of oppositional forces: political action vs love vs business.

David Hancock will exhibit with JuJe Collective in Foreign Affairs 2, Platform Projects Athens

In this cross-cultural collaboration that explores the relationship between the artist as curator, as artist, PAPER director, David Hancock will show with JuJe Collective from Toronto, Canada. David is interested in the gap between the real and imagined world experienced by those who engage in cosplay. Cosplayers are usually young people who dress up and role-play characters from computer games and Japanese Manga comics. Taking their characters into the urban landscape they use their imagination to transform their surroundings.

For her solo exhibition, Not Afraid of the Dark, Sharon Leahy-Clark invites viewers to enter the unknown and to examine what it means, as she suggests, to ‘be’. Her highly intricate paintings on hand-made paper, reflect Sharon’s intuitive exploration of her experiences and beliefs that form her impression of ‘the self’. References the unconscious and uncanny; themes which recur in folklore and fairy tales, in which internal and external worlds merge, Sharon taps into a primal, universal relationship with the irrational. Sharon allows her audience to enter this world, stepping beyond the boundary of traditional tales and enticing you into the dark.

Last Chance to See: Ilona Kiss & Rui Matsunaga – The Dreamers

PAPER will run concurrent exhibitions in the office space alongside the main gallery programme of curated exhibitions presented off-site. Presented initially at The Hepworth Print Fair 2017, this exhibition presents new print work for Ilona Kiss and Rui Matsunaga. Both artists explore the fantastical: Ilona through her lucid dreams, which form the basis of her hyperreal aquatints; Rui through Japanese mythology, folklore and popular culture in order to create surreal drypoints containing a myriad of strange characters.

Vincent James is taking part in Separation a group show by the Yorkshire Sculptors Group at Dean Clough, Halifax.  The preview is from 12 – 2pm on Saturday 6th May and the exhibition is open until the 4th June.  The show is an exhibition of sculpture and objects exploring ideas of separation in light of current affairs.

News: Buddha of the Bathroom by Mike Chavez-Dawson and featuring Ruby Tingle

Manchester Art Gallery Thursday 4 May 2017, 6.30pm–7.30pm Performance takes place at 6.45pm prompt in the Gallery entrance hall.

To celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Duchamp’s Fountain, Mike Chavez Dawson will unveil a new piece: Duchamp’s Ring 2013-2017 at Manchester Art Gallery on May 4th. The after hours opening as part of Thursday Lates will feature a new bespoke performance ‘Buddha of the Bathroom’ by Mike Chavez Dawson and Ruby Tingle to ceremoniously open the event.
