People said that Jenni at the end of the game was talking a lot with Gotham’s coach who’s spanish too 👀👀
anon - if you put a spanish person in a room with 100 other people and tell us there is another spaniard there, we will find each other, guaranteed! 😂
but seriously, i think it's just professional courtesy. i don't know if jenni would leave mexico to make a move to the nwsl. i would think her next move is back to spain at some point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
no, no, i think this user is just criticising mila for not playing jenni in her optimal role as a false 9. i didn't watch the full match but caught the highlights, and jenni came on for thembi kgatlana, so not a defensive switch. i think it's just that the rayadas midfield was weak and so when jenni was on that team, she had to play more defensive minded.
but also remember that all good forwards play defense at times. if you look at the work that ewa pajor does off the ball on defense, it's pretty impressive. so i think the tweet is just an example of positional flexibility depending on the team.
Tumblr media
wow, funny how the universe works in crazy ways, no? don't worry, anon. you will get your chance to meet jenni. 🙏 but i hope your parents had a nice interaction with her!

Week 5 NWSL Recap Musings
The players of the NWSL continue to bring me LIFE. We're on week 5 of the 2023 season, and it very much feels like teams are cohering and closing the gaps between the league's early topdawgs and those who have felt a bit dis-integrated.
Gotham FC v. KC Current
My team, Gotham FC, struggled against a tenacious Kansas City Squad. KC's attacking trio of the second half, spearheaded by Debinha and bolstered by Kizer and Cooper, forced the Gotham backline into a state of perpetual chaos. I'm excited to see KC's midfield line continue to gel, and by "excited" I mean scared shitless; Hailie Mace and LaBonta are building something special and tenacious. Gotham's midfield, notably Allie Long, looked swamped in their efforts to dictate play in the midfield matchups with KC. Long played some soft, gambling defense, but she wasn't the only one. Bruninha surprised me with a particularly off game. She looked like she was playing ungrounded. I know what that feels like as a player and I hope she lets this one be a motivator going forward, because I usually love watching Bruninha play.
Some positives for Gotham included Taylor Smith. I thought she played courageously, especially in the first half, with her inscrutable dynamism all over the pitch. Trying to track and predict her runs is no small task. And I was elated to see her cheeky attempt at chipping the keeper in the waning minutes of the 1st half. She was involved in many of Gotham's best looks.
My second positive was Abby Smith's performance. I hope she takes the first half as proof of how she can come up big in dicey moments. She made that crucial mistake in the second half leading to Debinha's first goal, but overall her performance was scintillating this weekend and I hope her coaches gas her up for that. I also hope she and the backline do some trust-building work and work on sealing up some strategy for when forward lines like KC tear across their channels.
Another positive was K . Mewis with her deliciously textured and precise balls slicing into the open channels. I want the team to cohere around this superpower to mount a unified, unpredictable attack. That is, when Gotham sees one of her epic slicers, the forwards and supporting mids need to be making generative runs to get those quick secondary balls to limit the opposition's ability to get organized. We haven't seen that type of connectivity from Gotham this season (not yet.)
Amoros has ostensibly been touting an "all for one and one for all" ethos for his team, wherein the defense builds in with the attack for maximum creativity and overloads, and the attack gets the f*&$ back on defense. I thought Gotham overall executed this in the first half, except for some disappointing moments where players stopped play before the whistle. It was this unfortunate tendency that I think contextualizes Abby Smith's ill-advised decision to leave her posts to try to clear a wide ball which would then lead to KC's first goal. Smith had played a heroic first half. But the defensive breakdowns were frequent; I hypothesize that a deterioration of trust between her and the wide backline led her to try to handle the deep and wide ball, an overbite which cost the Bats dearly.
And then the Current really sunk their teeth and lurched the defense from side to side like a dog with a chew toy. Debinha's sneaky cutting runs were perfectly timed. And Kelley O'Hara, subbed in at 64' got picked off by Hailie Mace who'd been in the whole game, making her look like the tired one. I resentfully admire Mace here--- I saw O'Hara hang her head for a moment, stunned at the merciless pickpocket. Good for her, and I hope O'Hara can clean up and quicken her checks to the ball, especially with the imminent determination of the World Cup roster.
Farrelly subbed out Zerboni in the 86th minute, which in my opinion was too late. Zerboni put in some great work, but Farrelly has the ability to instill composure and connectivity. I wish she had been given more time to do so. The defensive subs meant little without an injection of leadership and grit in the midfield. I would have liked to see Nighswonger sub out Allie Long. I know that Long is a veteran leader, but she had a pretty disconnected game and a more equal refreshment between the back line and the midfield, in my unqualified opinion, might have been more effective than taking Ellie Jean out, who had a strong showing.
There's gonna be lots of tape for Gotham to study from this. Go Bats.
I wish I had time to write about the Angel City v. Thorns game... I'm still not over Julie Ertz coming back and the 3-3 upset scoreline was thrilling to watch. But alas, gotta go to work.

2023 way too early NWSL Power Rankings
Rank
Team
Change
Analysis
1.
Portland Thorns FC
Newly promoted head coach Mike Norris steps in for former manager Rhian Wilkinson and that commitment to continuity is present throughout the team. The Thorns will enter the regular season with nearly all of their 2022 NWSL Championship roster intact. Sophia Smith is the reigning league MVP, and the club re-signed long-time captain Christine Sinclair for one more year in an effort to chase another title.
2.
Kansas City Current
The club ended its season as runners-up in the 2022 NWSL Championship, narrowly missing out on a remarkable "worst-to-first" season. After looking stagnant and out-classed in the final the front office quickly got to work to get even better. They re-signed key players Hailie Mace, Alex Loera, and Kate Del Fava. and then won the free agency period by signing three sought-after targets Morgan Gautrat, Vanessa DiBernardo, and Debinha.
3.
San Diego Wave FC
Wave FC were calculated in their offseason moves after a historic inaugural season ended in a playoff semifinal appearance. Head coach Casey Stoney and general manager Molly Downtain retained much of the inaugural roster, and added pieces in free agency. The midfield got a big boost with Danielle Colaprico, but if young prospect Jayden Shaw can add more goals in her sophomore year expect the Wave to have another successful season.
4.
OL Reign
The 2022 NWSL Shield winners ended their season with a semifinal defeat in the playoffs. Head coach Laura Harvey has made minor changes to her roster leading into the 2023 season. Veteran re-signings with Lauren Barnes and Megan Rapinoe were predictable moves, but the additions of defender Emily Sonnett, forward Elyse Bennett, and midfielder Luany could provide the team with a new spark.
5.
Houston Dash
The club hired a new head coach in Sam Laity and he's tasked with taking the team to the next level after the the made its first-ever postseason appearance in franchise history. They retained key players in free agency with new contracts for Sophie Schmidt and Allysha Chapman and have many players returning from their quarterfinals run. But acquiring Diana Ordonez might take the team to the next level if she can replicate the record-breaking goal-scoring from her rookie season.
6.
NJ/NY Gotham FC
The east coast side leaned into veteran experience this offseason after hiring new head coach Juan Carlos Amoros. They landed goalkeeper Abby Smith in free agency and re-signed Ifeoma Onumonu and Taylor Smith. They also acquired Yazmeen Ryan and in maybe the splashiest move of the off-season traded for USWNT forward Lynn Williams during the draft, setting up big expectations for the club after a last-place finish in 2022.
7.
Chicago Red Stars
The team suffered the biggest departures in free agency losing all of their starting midfielders. They tried to stop the bleeding by acquiring veteran Cari Roccaro, and signing Brazilian international Julia Binachi. Forward Mallory Swanson has had two consecutive MVP-caliber seasons with the team and is in remarkable form with the national team, but much of the clubs' success will depend on how their new midfield pieces pan out.
8.
Racing Louisville FC
Head coach Kim Björkegren has created a roster of massive international talent since he joined the franchise in 2022. Nigerian forwardl Uchenna Kanu is the newest addition and enters the league off a successful stint with Tigres Femenil. While most teams will feel the pressure of international windows in a World Cup year, Louisville may feel the impact hardest. A break in the regular season will help, but how all the new pieces mesh together will put a lot of pressure on Bjorkegren getting his tactics right.
9.
Orlando Pride
The Pride promoted Seb Hines to head coach after the team went on an undefeated streak during his time as the interim boss. The team picked up exciting young players in the draft, but how players return from injury may impact the teams' success as Brazilian icon Marta returns post-ACL injury and Vivanna Villacorta continues to strengthen her ankle after season-ending ligament surgery last season.
10.
Angel City FC
Angel City will embark on just their second season but made minor moves in the offseason to improve. The biggest brand in the league struck out in the first-ever free agency period but did manage to sign Katie Johnson to the roster. It's a risky move to hope multiple players (Christen Press, Sydney Leroux, Sarah Gorde, etc) have breakout seasons after major injuries, but the team has a young prospect in Alyssa Thompson to be excited about.
11.
Washington Spirit
The 2021 NWSL Champions took a complete 180 degree turn and struggled during their 2022 season. The team strung together just enough performances to avoid last place, but may not have accomplished enough in the offseason to get them back to the playoffs. Much will depend on whether or not the current core of players will buy into former NWSL champion and new head coach Mark Parsons' tactics in his second stint with the club.
12.
North Carolina Courage
The team officially closed the chapter on an entire era after losing Debinha to free agency and trading team captain Abby Erceg. The roster also lost Carson Pickett and Merritt Methias in the trades, but welcomes USWNT defender Emily Fox, Estelle Johnson, and Tyler Lussi to the squad.

Sounds like Gotham have hired Juan Carlos Amoros, recently the interim head coach at Houston Dash and before that at Real Betis and Spurs. https://www.thestriker.com/2022/10/29/Juan-carlos-amoros-head-coach-njny-gotham-fc-nwsl-revealed
oh that's interesting! He and Karen Hills (I think) got spurs promoted, right?
