Most underrated JttW reference in the whole show, but that’s just my opinion.
The writers could tell me they took this scene word for word straight from an English translation, and I’d believe them.

I have a few AUs with this guy- read more is just a ramble explaining him
I essentially wanted to make an AU that takes the vilified version of Tripitaka from LMK fandom and make him better written- a sorta "what if he did what people who don't understand his character wish he did"
He's called Puppeteer!Tripitaka, Wukong being the puppet. He never interferes with the pilgrims actions, seeing himself less as a teacher to guide them to come to new solutions, and more just having a bunch of demon bodyguards. He doesn't perceive their wrongdoings as something he needs to put a stop to- with it it leads to a weird dynamic between Wukong and Tripitaka...
Wukong essentially sees Tripitaka as one of few whos let him just do what he wanted- it causes a sense of respect to Tripitaka inspite of Tripitaka treating him more like a servant.
The rest of the pilgrims, however, slowly perceive Tripitaka as just a package to deliver than necessarily human. Something fragile, enough to never wish to bring harm to him, but enough to not treat him like a person...
He's also has some lore with his own wrongdoings (cough cough violence cough cough) but we'll keep that quiet for now

Erlang burned his mountain, beat him in front of a crowd, and got him into that furnace for 49 days; Wukong does not like him.

Kill the crown: Failure.
The journey was long. Over a decade of traveling from the east, battling demons, and trying to just keep Tripitaka alive.
Sure Wukong got there in the nick of time usually, freeing a shaken up but unharmed Tripitaka but this- this was different.
He had failed.
His master was alive but bruises and cuts littered his skin, a mockery of their efforts; of Wukong’s efforts.
He had been too slow, too confident in the push and pull of this journey and Tripitaka had paid the price.
Today it was a black eye and a few cuts, but tomorrow it could be a body. Torn clothes with no remains to bury.
He needed to do better. He had to be better.
For his brothers, his master, himself. He never wanted to feel this way again.

Some Tang Sanzang concept art that I don’t think I’ll finish anytime soon, but whateva
The scar on his head is from a spat with wukong gone wrong, spur of the moment which he regretted after he realized what he had done-
he waited for his sifu to use the fillet tightening sultra to punish him, he’s shaking, apologizing profusely in a small voice. To his surprise he doesn’t feel the painstaking ache of the band squeezing. Instead, when he looks up he finds Tripitaka, his sifu, looking at him with a horrified look on his face. But…. He’s not scared of wukong… he’s scared of himself, if he could cause such a reaction in this godly simian, a demon that the heavens feared, then…what he had been doing…it wasn’t right, it couldn’t be.
-Lololol that’s my head canon/ my own home brew story of Jttw that I’ve been making in my mind, I like to imagine that’s the point where they’re relationship starts to turn for the better and instead of reluctant companions they become friends who wish to protect each other in every way, no matter the cost. They are representative of the mind and the heart, like in most cases they clash and argue, resent and fear each other, but when finding balance and harmony throughout their journey the mind and heart grow closer and work as one. They’re relationship to me is something more than friendship, it’s love but not romantic love, but it’s also not familial love like a father and son, though some translations of the book describe their relationship as such I’d like to think of it as something deeper. Again not romantic kissy love. These babes are Buddhists lololol but it is more than friendship. I might post my version of the story on here and you can interpret as you please, father son, a couple, friends, enemies. But know that in the end what him and sun wukong have is complex, it can not be summed up in one word. At least that’s my take on them,
Also the other scars are from demons, getting captured and such, the scar between his eyebrows he got as a baby, and the read on his wrists are from rope burn, again from being tied up and captured.
I like to see the monk as having a fit build despite acting and appearing weak, though he does not know what to do with this rocking bod he has. (This drawing was inspired by gidget… I loved their reference for their tang and decided I would make my own concept sheet depicting his scars and body type as well.)
I want to start posting my dynamic stuff on here and actually drawing my Jttw ideas… I just get really perfectionist about them and end up only liking the art after a year goes by and it’s too late to post them….
If you made it here tell me what you think, I’ve spent like 5 minutes writing this and my cat is chirping angrily at me cause she wants me to pet her lolololol so pouty, my cute baby is throwing a fit
Sorry if you think these takes are trash it’s just my headcanons, they might change overtime though

I made this today, and I just thought... a modern au, Reader is in need of finding a new place to live, and since she's broke and couldn't rely on many people, she's okay by taking the first thing she finds.  Call it luck (or misfortune), but she finds a condo, cheap rent, with a flat that can be taken already without any kind of problems. The landlord is... a really nice guy? A GENUINE KIND MAN? Like, a big soft man that can literally fix and do everything you can ask? Then, she met the three friends of the landlord that live there, a Buddhist dude that seems nice, maybe too much. Help, he's giving her life advice. Then this big man that just kept on flirting with her, even after she had slammed her door in his face. and this...gremlin...this creepy dude with yeòllow eyes that goes around with a stick (he got abs, so who cares?)
Only after some time does she realize that these three are not just strange dudes that live there; they're the famous pilgrims of the story Journey to the West, and the entire condo is full of demons and other creatures, and she has to survive/get along with them.
