Research Project 1

Mental health has become a big issue on college campuses. As a university student, I always feel hopeless and depressed. The amount of students seeking help for depression within the campus is ridiculously high. I always wonder why some students can bare the high academic pressure, while some students drop out of school because of depression. After looking through the codebook for the NESARC study, I found out that I am particularly interested in the risk factors of major depression.

The first topic that I would like to explore is the association between smoking cigarettes and depression. Many people who smoke told me that they smoke to relieve stress. I would like to know whether smoking actually helps lowering the rate of suicide attempt.

A study composed by A. E. Evans  and his colleagues shows that adults who smoked tobacco were more likely to die by suicide.(https://doi.org/10.1017/S0033291717000587) Another study also shows that smoking is a risk factor for suicide ideation among teenagers. (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apnu.2017.01.001) In a review article on the journal “Substance Use and Misuse” , it is shown that it is more difficult for individual with depression to quit smoking. There articles show that there is a close relationship between tobacco use and depression.

The second topic that I would like to explore is the effects of family history of depression. How would a family history of depression affect an individual? I am particularly interested in whether a family history of depression would increase the likelihood of the depressed person to seek help from a counsellor or doctor.

A study was done on the role of family history of depression in women. (10.1016/j.jpsychires.2013.11.005 ) The study suggests that a family history of depression predicts major depression in midlife women. Therefore, a family history of depression may make a person more vulnerable to developing depression. However, I couldn't find any article that directly relate one’s family history of depression to his attempt to seek help.

**Hypothesis : Tobacco use and a family history of depression both have a considerable effect on developing depression, or at least worsen the symptoms of depression.
