he's  equally  tempted  to  use  that  sharp  tongue  now  —  though  he  has  a  sneaking  suspicion  any  insults  he  deigns  to  hurl  childe's  way  will  simply  bounce  off  of  him  like  water  droplets  on  a  duck's  back.  seems  the  balladeer  must  stoop  to  his  level. so be it.
