The starting town in my game is a winter town called Estalia. The whole town is built around a huge cathedral from a forgotten age. The town's not COMPLETELY done yet (want to add more grass and ground texture), but all the NPCs are there now and all the little sidequests, flavor text, etc are in. Yay! Progress! I'm nearly done with the first chapter of the game!

I can't believe I never posted this! 😱 I bought this cosplay second hand just to try it out, but I figured Aerith may not be my character. 😅
I personally think I'd look better as Tifa! 💪

Alterium Shift Update: Delays and Commitment to Amazing Gameplay
Tumblr media
Alterium Shift update arrive for the 2D retro-inspired JRPG game for Linux, Steam Deck, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the amazing creativity of Drattzy Games. Available via Steam Early Access. Drattzy Games LLC here, your favorite indie studio known for those great retro-inspired JRPG titles. Now they have some important updates for the highly-anticipated game, Alterium Shift. While having some big changes recently. So it's time to let you know there is still commitment to deliver amazing gameplay on Linux and Steam Deck.
Current Status and Challenges
First things first, let's talk about the delay in the timeline. When releasing the 2D retro-inspired JRPG Early Access version of Alterium Shift back in July 2023, there was supposed to be a full release update by now. But as you know, things don’t always go as planned. The Early Access phase showed there were a bunch of critical features that players wanted. So Drattzy had to reassess and refocus development.
Major Change in Publishing Partnership
Here's the big news: Drattzy ended the agreement with their publisher as of July 2024. This was a tough decision, but it was best for both sides to focus on their own goals. As a result, they appreciate all the support from the former publisher and wish them the best. This transition has been in the works since early 2024 and has impacted the timeline and focus.

Implications and Moving Forward
Here’s what this means:
Project Delay: There were hopes to launch the full version of Alterium Shift this year, but now there is an update to the timeline. Don’t worry, though, the developer is still aiming for a major content update. Due to hit 75% completion by the end of this year.
Localization Removal: The former publisher owned the localization rights. So they have temporarily removed localization from the title. Drattzy is working on solutions to bring this back in the future.
Development Focus: Now that publishing is on Drattzy, they ask for your patience to refine the roadmap. The small team is eager to push forward, even with the added challenge of handling everything internally.
Future Plans and Community Engagement
Looking ahead, there are plans to share a high-level roadmap with players. This will give the best estimates for the project's timeline. But also keep in mind, these might get an update since Alterium Shift development can be volatile. There will also be participation in upcoming events like 2D Con in Minnesota and PAX West in Seattle. Due to get ready for these showcases but will provide more detailed updates after the events.
The Commitment
Despite the setbacks update, the dedication to Alterium Shift is rock solid. Since the developer is working nonstop and is committed to more frequent and transparent updates. Your support and patience mean the world, as they are determined to meet and exceed your expectations with the final product. Available now via Steam Early Access. Priced at $19.99 USD / £16.75 / 19,50€. Along with support for Linux, Steam Deck (Verified), Mac, and Windows PC. A huge thank you to the community for the unwavering support and feedback. Since there is potential for Alterium Shift and there is much to update for this journey. Stay tuned for more 2D retro-inspired JRPG updates and announcements.

In case you forgot what the "J" in "JRPG" stands for, some of Eiyuden Chronicle's earliest recruits include a Japanese Delinquent, a Sailor Moon Expy and Samurai with Gourd.

A few years ago, I bought RPG Maker VX Ace on Steam, and decided to make a little game of my own. It was very much a product of my humor at the time - very late 2010s shitpost vibes. I wouldn't say I'm proud of it now, but I still put a good deal of effort into the game, and it was one of my first big creative projects. I sent it around to a few friends, we laughed at it, and I never touched it again.
In 2023, my computer was bricked, with only the contents of my hard drive recoverable. I got a new laptop and imported all my old files, and while going through them, I found the folder for Turglequest - that RPG I had made way back when. In the mean time, I had gotten some more experience making games, and something about my old handiwork inspired me. Midway through the creation of the original, I had shifted to a more serious tone, trying to give it an actual story and add depth to the characters. Given I left the game's first half unchanged, it made for a very lazy and jarring tonal shift. Still, there was a glimmer of potential.
What started as an attempt to merely touch up some of the game's rougher patches expanded into a massive undertaking. A complete remake, leaving only the basic structure and concepts. A new script, new maps, new bosses, new soundtrack - the final product barely resembled its inspiration. I released TURGLEQUEST REMASTERED at the end of 2023, and to this day, it's the game I'm proudest of. I'll admit it has its flaws - there's different things I would've done with Turgle and Aster's characters as I've imagined more of their world, and I wasn't the best at balancing the combat. Nonetheless, it's still my baby.
You can play Turglequest Remastered at the link below, but I've also created this playthrough for anyone interested in the story. I include a lot of the combat, but skip past repetitive encounters and grinding sessions. There's also some creator commentary tucked in there!

at some point when i haven't been playing video games for like fourteen hours straight and maybe after finishing it again. i wanna write a spoiler-light review of dav because there were so many points where i had to like take a moment to appreciate it from like. a game design perspective. the combat the boss fights the companions the interactivity.... genuinely it is like. so fucking good.

thank u david I saw an exact post to this effect a while ago and you articulated my thoughts in a way I simply couldn't. Also, I wanna add that there are games that try for the latter feel as well. It's just they're less well known because most of the time that's where DND goes.
Realistically, the answer to "why are ostensibly Studio Ghibi inspired tabletop RPGs always Kiki's Delivery Service or My Neighbor Totoro and never Nausicaä or Princess Mononoke?" isn't because people forget that the latter exist – it's because 95% of the people who want that side of things are trying to run it using Dungeons & Dragons.

I was thinking recently and it's occurred to me that experience points would be heavily regulated in any world that acknowledges them as an actual thing instead of only being a meta way of giving players information.
If it's a setting where experience points come from hunting full animals that need to be born and grow up, then both sources of EXP and individuals who've reached a high level becomes a finite commodity that's actually very valuable. And even if monsters spawn from nothing, it simply becomes something to be regulated to monopolize and deny certain individuals power.
Either way, any governing body would want to finely monitor who gets to hunt monsters and who gets to level up. Just as a matter of keeping dangerous individuals from gaining too much individual power while making sure any figures who do reach high levels answer to "the right authority".
By extension, I imagine anyone who just goes and farms EXP like most RPG players would are going to be treated like an outlaw, someone who broke regulation with penalties associated, or poachers.
