the magicians cast really DID deserve so much better and i thought i was over that however seeing any gifset takes me back to BLIND FURY that the showrunners got away with the sickening things they did
literally it fills me with indescribable rage. they had THEE cast of all time and what did they do with it? THAT.

Reblogging again to add
- maybe we see Q, like, three times total.
- One is the first ep of s5 when he’s trying to Do Everything but that ain’t working
- eventually El is like ‘hey, maybe it’s okay to Retire? Possibly?’ And they have the Feelings Talk or whatevs cause Q is struggling to Step Away, cause last time he basically tried to Step Away El got possessed by a Monster
- resolves with him deciding/announcing that he’s moving into his dad’s house
- ep ends with El and Julia helping him move, and while Julia sets up a portal Q kisses El because I’m gay and also fuck you
- cue episodes 2-5 of Q sending them research offscreen when he can, and perhaps El watching a cute video of Q with the baby every so often to show us they’re alive and well
- dark king makes a move on El? El politely declines w/ a ‘thanks but I have a boyfriend and adoptive daughter waiting for me at home, so...’
- An episode where El spends the entire time trying to get back to earth because Q got a babysitter overnight and, um...
- ep five El drops a line about how Q and the baby are in fillory Just In Case the world ends
- the next ep we see Q in is Oops! When the harmonic convergence is happening and everything is going to shit.
- Maybe El tries to make Q go back to Fillory at first before shit goes down? Very cute and sad ‘no I wanna stay with you’ moment because you know the bois be like that.
- it’s very Remus and Tonks in DHP2 cause u can’t tell me Q would be able to stay away if the world ending shenanigans stopped being SHENANIGANS and were just word ending
- Fen and the baby are safe and holed up in the Moaic cottage together
- also time looped El kissing Q with Such Determination every time he leaves the apartment is just. Yeah.
- Basically Q just taking over whatever the hell Charlton was doing that episode after Margo falls out of the loop and El is like ‘alr my smart boy is coming with me now, thank u’
- after that ep we return to our regularly scheduled line drop updates and cute videos and Margo being Very Confused And Also Grossed Out By Baby YouTube
- Q switching bodies with El instead of Margo to kill the dark king? For the sake of Hale’s top notch Quentin impression?
- the only word you hear from El that episode is a bunny that says ‘Quentin you fucker’ till the end when they switch back
- back to line drop updates kids
- El starting to do that thing where he starts getting kind of scared of things, maybe triggered by a Q vid where Mitsi is starting to talk and can say El’s name?
- Margo or Alice being like ‘whoa, ur like a Dad now huh?’ And El just being like. ‘Oh Shit.’
- the musical episode? Instead of the Sad Duet between El and Alice, maybe El sings Along The Way by Pasek and Paul. Is it to Margo? Is it to Alice? Is it to Arielle in a flashback? Who knows? Not me.
- Either way whoever it is tells him to just talk to his bf, and everyone feels better.
- then the LAST time we see Q (jralph as Q I mean) is the finale
- the End to Fillory looks more like the book’s, with, instead of the planet exploding, the whole thing being at war, and with Julia taking Book!Q’s place as the one that fixes the planet (tho, I’m sorry that Q left cause the CONNOTATIONS of his discipline being repair of small objects and then FIXING A PLANET were *chefs kiss* in the books).
- ANYWAY that’s how Julia gets her goddesshood back (WHICH IS WHAT SHE WANTED FROM THE START)
- Q, alternatively, takes Book!Julia’s place of arriving midway through shit going down, and gets to use that repair of small objects discipline to hold Whitespire together as shit gets destroyed
- him and El fighting back to back y’all, cause again, Q would want to Be There when the world gets fucked up
- Episode/series ends with Julia refusing to be fillory’s goddess in terms of ruling the place, but being a demigoddess instead and maybe it’s protector?
- anyway the dark king gets Fuckin Banished, Margo and Fen are co-kings if a newly repaired Fillory, and the last thing we see is the portal clock, in El and Q’s living room as they hang out with their baby
- basically all the time they spent on ‘let’s explore grief!’ They instead devote to ‘let’s explore what happens when your life fundamentally changes and how moving on from one important chapter of it doesn’t mean that that chapter wasn’t meaningful or that the bonds you forged in that time are now gone, even though your place in the scope of things is different’ and ‘let’s explore the different stages of maturity and healing one goes through as their life begins to settle from being very turbulent to being suddenly quite stable by comparison, and how one can and still might help their friends who are still going through that turbulence’
Hear me out: the version of Season 5 where The Magicians showrunners decided, “Instead of killing off Quentin, what if we just - didn’t?” and the Season 4 finale ends with everyone getting out of the Mirror World in one piece, but in the final scene everyone’s at Kady’s apartment, celebrating that Eliot’s pulled through the surgery and the monsters are gone and Library’s not bent on multi-world domination anymore, and then Poppy shows up and drops a diaper bag and a baby carrier containing one (1) baby in the middle of the floor and is like, “Hey dude, actually the kid is totally yours, I just lied since you were functionally the minion of a god-level homicidal monster, but it seems like that’s been wrapped up, so here you go, baby daddy - I’m off to a dragon-tracking expedition in Belize, be back in four months, probably, byeee!” and disappears out the door, and everyone stares at the baby and at Quentin, end scene. And then as of Season 5 Quentin becomes The Character We Never See, because obviously now he’s a harried single dad holed up in his dad’s old house in New Jersey, and has neither the time nor the inclination to participate in batshit dangerous magical plot shenanigans, but we keep getting updates on him and baby Misti and the random baby shit everyone keeps buying for her in between crises, and we hear Julia’s and Margo’s (and eventually Eliot’s and Alice’s) one-sided phone conversations with him, and see text conversations on-screen à la Sherlock, during one episode there is a ridiculous running joke of everyone looking up YouTube videos to solve some kind of bizarre baby problem Q is having while also trying to deal with whatever the much more important A-plot is - and maybe in the last episode Eliot’s talking to Q on the phone, telling him everyone and everything is more or less okay, and says, “It’s a long story, I’ll tell you later. I’ll be home soon.”
And I was thinking of this only in the context of one last season, but honestly, the longer it goes on, the funnier it gets. There could be a body-swapping episode where Quentin’s stuck in someone else’s body and so interacts with everyone that way, and one where he’s invisible and inaudible to everyone but Penny, so it’s just Penny sniping at empty space the whole episode, a wedding episode where it’s just all the preparations and shit going wrong in the background of the A-plot, and we never actually see the wedding - so many possibilities, while still subverting “Q as the hero of the story” thing -
Death and heartbreak? Boring! Unoriginal! Hanging-a-lantern wackiness? Hilarious, full of creative opportunities!

personal theory for the magicians season four (keeping in mind that I know fuck all about TV writing in general / writing on the magicians in particular) is that season four got a complete rewrite at some point (obviously because of jralph leaving, and also I agree with the theory that they likely couldn’t get the actor for Irene McAllistair back) where the first few eps had probably already been generally planned out which is why they leave in the mcallistairs at the beginning and then never mention them again, and also why there is a very strong sense (to me) that, since they had to write Quentin out of the show, the show-runners planned out the series of events in the final few episodes that lead to the finale and Quentin’s death in the mirror world (in a scenario that is purposefully(?) and weirdly reminiscent of the climactic scene in the first Harry Potter movie, why why??) because they knew that’s what the whole season had to be leading to - and then went, okay, everything in the middle just has be filled in. By something. I guess. and some of the stuff in the middle is really good! and works!
I love everything they do with Alice, I would love Kady’s plotline with the hedges if a little more had happened with it, the dragon egg episode was fun and a nice break from the tension, Penny40′s part about not assuming who is the important in the story was good (although in retrospect felt extremely disingenuous and part of the original spin of ‘actually Quentin’s death is subversive’). but so little of it is tied in with the main plotlines of the monster and the library in any way that matters. the most hilarious example of this is the episode where the library starts IMPLANTING PEOPLE WITH WORMS THAT KILL YOU IF YOU DO MAGIC. This should be something really terrifying and interesting and impactful! and it literally has no impact on the plot going forward or any of the main characters. Pete gets attacked, but Pete is a secondary character that even Kady only seems to slightly care about, and it barely gets mentioned again. The whole purpose of this plot point is to show that the library and specifically Everett are Bad, so that Zelda is willing to turn against them. The Monster is such a significant character for the entire season, but his story ends with a whimper, no narrative pay-off, and so there’s the sense that he basically exists to show off Hale Appleman’s acting and provide a problem to be solved and to send Quentin spiralling. This is also a similar problem with Margo’s plotlines - Margo gets awesome stuff this season! but since Eliot is out of the picture and the Fairy Queen is dead, she’s got no one to narratively bounce off of in Fillory except Josh and Fen, who are basically cyphers this season. What does Josh want, except for Margo to be his girlfriend and not be mean to him? Who knows? The episode that they could have showed us something about Josh (the werewolf one where he and Margo get together) tells us that Josh isn’t willing to murder or rape someone to survive, which is nice? But also a really low bar that we’d expect any of the main cast to clear. It tells us very little about Josh - the point of the episode is Margo sacrificing for him. The same with Fen - what does Fen want, what does she feel about Margo, about being High King, about Margo being High King? She seems basically okay with all of it, I guess. is all we get, because again the point is Margo sacrificing her crown for Eliot. Which I love for Margo, but it’s weird that she has to spend a whole season acting off of the blank spaces that should be Josh and Fen’s characters, ESPECIALLY when we get the damn goldfish scene, where it’s like, okay, I understand that Margo is awesome and Margo sacrifices for people and this is how she shows it, and she shows that she really cares about Josh, but. Why do WE care about Josh, again? Same problem with the episode with Penny23, Marina and the time-line shifting - like, it’s a cool concept, and they wanted to bring in Stoppard from the book, and Marina’s always fun, but what’s the point? Penny23 and Penny40 have their chat, but that could have been written in a million ways. Marina’s actor was signed for four episodes and they really didn’t know what to do with Penny23 other than indicate that he’s much more willing to sacrifice people (ie. Quentin) than the OG Penny, if necessary? Okay, fine, I guess? We couldn’t have gotten that out of a more narratively significant episode?
anyway, I know the Magicians’ strong suite has never been plotting, and mostly I’m fine with that, it just stands out really noticeably this season. they have all the main domino falling events happen in the last few episodes so that they can have Quentin and Alice getting back together, the scene with Quentin and the flower to call back to the book, and then leading to the monsters and the library both causing the final mirror world death scene, but it leaves this strange space in the middle of the season in which lots of things just seem to happen, some interesting and theme-and-character-developing and some only confusingly irrelevant to either the story or the characters.
