THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED - Near Clear Lake, Iowa. It was here, in the early morning hours of February 3rd, 1959, where rock legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson (along with pilot Roger Peterson) perished in a tragic plane crash that shocked and saddened the nation and a generation. Known as “The Day the Music Died” - after its melancholy reference in singer Don McLean’s 1971 song of innocence lost, “American Pie” - this rock-n-roll tragedy is still remembered by fans to this day. The crash site has become a shrine of sorts and is usually littered with flowers, scarves, records, and rosaries; along with offerings of cigarettes, beers, and thick-rimmed glasses. Not to mention hundreds and hundreds of guitar picks. All of that was covered in snow went I visited. The memorial of the pilot; Roger Peterson, who also perished in the crash; needed to be dug out of the ice. That could be either because the previous visitors were unaware of it or because some still blame the man for the crash. I only knew it was there because of photos I had seen. The ground was too frozen to clear off much else though. It’s lucky someone planted a flag out there or we might have walked right past the whole thing. Today is the 60th anniversary of “The Day the Music Died”. On February 3, 1959, American musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, & J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash together with pilot Roger Peterson. The tour was fraught with problems. Mainly being in subpar buses & the distances between venues had not been properly considered when the performances were scheduled; instead of "circling" around the Midwest to each town, the tour zig-zagged with distances between cities over 400 miles with little rhyme or reason. Clear Lake, Iowa had not been a scheduled stop, but the tour promoters, hoping to fill an open date, called the manager of the local Surf Ballroom & offered him the show. He accepted & they set the show for that night. The next scheduled destination after Clear Lake was Moorhead, Minnesota, a 365-mile drive north. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson ended up vying to take a plane to the next stop to get some rest between shows. The plane took off normally at 12:55 am on February 3. Hubert Dwyer witnessed the take-off from a platform outside the control tower. Later that morning, Dwyer, having heard no word from Peterson (the pilot) since his departure, took off in another airplane to retrace his planned route. Within minutes, at around 9:35 am, he spotted the wreckage less than 6 mi from the airport. The Bonanza had impacted terrain at high speed, estimated to have been around 170 mph. The right wing tip had struck the ground first, sending the aircraft cartwheeling across the frozen field for 540 feet, before coming to rest against a wire fence at the edge of property. The bodies of the musicians were ejected from the plane while the pilot’s body was trapped inside. County coroner Ralph Smiley certified that all four victims died instantly, citing the cause of death as "gross trauma to brain" for the three artists & "brain damage" for the pilot. RIP. Today is the anniversary of #thedaythemusicdied when rising #rocknroll stars #buddyholly #richievalens and #jprichardson known as the #bigbopper died in a plane crash after a concert in #Iowa. The three musicians were on a tour of the Midwest, and the cold and uncomfortable tour bus was beginning to take its toll. Holly finally had enough and chartered a plane to take them to the next stop on the tour in #Minnesota. The plane could only seat 4 plus the pilot. #waylonjennings, then a member of Holly's band, gave up his seat to the big bopper who had the flu. Another member of Holly's band lost his seat to Valens in a coin toss. The plane took off at night in poor conditions and shortly after crashed in a cornfield killing all aboard. Jennings was haunted by this twist of fate for years and never completely got over it. Combined with the induction of #elvispresley into the army the loss of these dynamic performers set rock n roll back several years and it was not until the arrival of the #Beatles in America in 1964 that it regained the momentum and energy it had lost. #music #50s
