Helloooo... I hope I won't bother you asking this but I heard that in the jpn version of Veyle's diary it's precised she is the only of Alear's sister ?

It's no bother to me at all! The ally notebooks are proving to be one of the most fascinating cases to study in Engage - my guess is the localization team had to make a number of compromises to 'accuracy' of translation due to the limited space on each page.

So here's Veyle's first page, where we will find the answer to your question:

The Japanese sentence does indeed include 'yuiitsu', which decisively means 'one and only.' Immediately sparks some confusion, because we know Sombron had a lot of children, but the next word immediately clears that up - it's 'imouto' - younger sister. In Japanese, 'younger sister' and 'older sister' are each their own unique word (same for brother btw). So it doesn't take up any extra space in Japanese to specify older vs. younger, creating a tricky problem in English localization when the number of characters in a text box is limited.

That makes this make sense - Alear has Veyle as their one younger sister, and they can still have any number of older sisters.

Update 11/30: A couple of readers chimed in to point out that the game clearly states in Chapter 24 that Alear did indeed have at least one other younger sister, who was killed by Corrupted. So the ally page says "one and only" within the context of Alear's surviving siblings, who is only Veyle by the time the events of the Engage happen.

JP also describes her as shy: 遠慮がちだが本当は大の遊��好き。(She is shy, but also very playful.) And there was also more to the sentence about her wanting to be useful to people: 人の役に立つことを何よりも望み、(She wants to be useful to people more than anything, 困っている人は放っておけない。(cannot ignore a person in need.)

The JP line about the Pact Ring also mentions that she treats it as her most valuable amulet / charm, as she did with the dragonstone.

Okay u said anything and so I’ll ramble about FS voice lines because for some reason I have a huge love for the voice lines in this game and keep going to the wiki to read them. For example, one of Oyster’s lines is literally him finding MA’s diary and reading how MA wants to get closer to him, and then trying to forget about it. I just find that so funny for some reason?? Like it’s now canon that in game MA wants to be closer to Oyster??? And has a flipping diary??? (1)

(2) And I also love how many lines are fanfic fuel?? Like Junmai’s intimacy lines are HOLY HELL NSFW fanfic fuel, especially the first one. And holy hell I love reading pledge and intimacy lines, cause they’re (usually) very cute and wholesome? Mashed Potatoes literally sees his dream of a world of blooming plants in the MA’s waking face, Oden calls MA ‘the shore to anchor I’ve been looking for’ and I just—- AHHHHHH— I just love food soul voice lines, and I need to gush. (2)

I go back to listen to the voice lines A BUNCH too, a lot of those Food Souls are real poetic motherfuckers huh? Personally - of course - I melt at B’s voice lines, since you can really hear him starting to think differently and think!! For himself!! Both Kensho Ono and Edward Bosco do an amazing job for him. 

I really just love how FooFan has these voice lines implemented because it really makes it stand out to me, it was easily one of the elements that really drew me to the game in the first place!

I just wish they’d update the English voices though ahaha. Though it’s good for me to listen to the JPN voice lines since I’m trying to learn the language.

Life Update

こんにちは！

The last life update I posted was about me finally enrolling in a Japanese class, and now I'm happy to say that I've continued it to JPN 2, and my class is about to end. I'm hoping I can pass this JPN2 so I can proceed with enrolling for JPN3.

Though I'm not quite confident with my nihongo right because most of the time I found myself struggling on conjugations, and katakana, yes laugh at me haha, I still can't memorize all the katakana since we're not mostly using it during class, so that's is why I ended up not mastering it (but I'm reviewing it don't worry haha).

Vocab and Kanji memorization are not mostly my problem, but how to practice, sentence particles and then conjugations lol though I'm not giving up! I know there are times when we really can't avoid experiencing shit when we are studying.

I also frequently visit all the Japanese tumblogs that I've been following ever since! Just to check their resources and everything about the Japanese Language, and if you are one of them reading this, I would like to say thank you! thank you! so much for all of that/effort in creating it, I appreciate it so much!

Study Progress (so far): Kanji Practice - I'm using WaniKani website so far. It helps me lol I kinda like their style. I'm also practicing my handwriting using the 2500 Kanji book (Kanji Dictionary for Foreigners Learning Japanese 2500 N5 to N1). I think I've learned like 50 to 100 Kanji characters as of now (HAHA I need to re-asses myself, but I think yes?? loool) Speaking Practice - I can't do this much, since I actually want to practice it with a real person, but for now, I'm just doing shadowing. Writing Practice - Sometimes, I do write some Japanese song lyrics or phrases for practice, then most of the time writing in Kanji then example sentences and words of those Kanjis, well it's quite helpful for me. Listening Practice - This one is the tough one. I can pick up words that I've learned mostly on shows, entertainments, dramas, and anything under Japanese entertainment, however when I try listening to some podcasts like not a language learning podcast, but mostly Japanese podcasts, I find it hard to understand some of them, but I know it's fine! Baby steps baby steps! Grammar Practice - This is really like really making me cry, at first I was like "OK YES ITSSSOOO EASY", then all the particles came together in one phrase like it really came to beat my ass down.

Basically, I'm weak and scared to create sentences at this point, though I know myself that I can do it, I think the factor that's stopping me is これは怖いですね! but as I've said a while ago, I will not give up on this! 🫡

I will also (once again haha) try my best to regularly post something like a diary entry in Japanese here! (hoping someone will correct me)

So yeah, I think that's it so far? for my Language life update haha 😅
