Today I gave a talk on my book tour to a great group of people about the practice of begging in thur rhythm of nature and how to find our Joy! I call it my #secretsauce and give some worksheets on it in my book. During the lecture everyone was open to pop up and share what brings each of us to a place that brings immediate joy. So you’ve heard about Hookie Weekend and you’re considering going. This year, it falls on between June 27 – 30, 2019 and I am here to tell you why it’s a good look.

First of all, there is SOCA. Who doesn’t want to wine and jam with rum? Secondly, Hookie will be celebrating TEN YEARS this year, so I truly believe it will be epic. Lastly, it’s super affordable, especially if you are in the tri-state area.

GETTING THERE

If you are flying into Washington, DC, you have three airport options. BWI (Baltimore), DCA (Reagan National) and IAD (Dulles – This airport is far as hell FYI).  I attended last year, and like the year before, I enjoyed myself. It is a 4-hour drive from the NY/NJ border.

WHERE TO FETE 

The Hookie Carnival weekend kicks off with a free fete, Release Therapy on Thursday, June 27. On Carnival Friday, Hookie wows us with their annual pool party “duck work” type event  where party attendees play ‘hookie’ from work. The following morning, we kick off Saturday Morning with Lion’s Pride Jouvert. TRUST ME, it’s worth it! It was my favorite event last year.

Shine DC and Riddim and Road are newer to the weekend’s lineup. Shine DC has several international and local DJs in attendance, and Riddim and Road is my second favorite event, this is when we get to wear costumes. Plan to stay until about 6pm on Sunday. Tickets are now on sale

WHERE TO STAY 

Washington, DC is extremely drive-able so you can just about stay anywhere but most of the events take place in Northeast, Washington DC, so staying in the Capitol Hill/H Street Corridor area is best.

THINGS TO PACK 

Based on the parties, you need carnival chic outfits for Release Therapy and Shine. A bathing suit/swim trunks is needed for Hookie X and of course jouvert wear. Lastly, bring an old costume with you, Riddim and Road should not be missed.

Hello Carnivalists, 

We have now entered what I consider the fun part of carnival planning. You purchased your flight (okay maybe lol), you put a down payment on your lodging accommodations and you are avidly working toward paying down your carnival costume. Now it’s time to shop for the greatest show on earth and buy your fete tickets. Ideally, we will enjoy fetes before we hit the road so here are the things you may need.

THE FETES & OUTFITS

In addition to your fete tickets, you will need to buy carnival chic outfits. Encompassed in the carnival scene are different kinds of fetes. There are pool/beach fetes, cooler fetes, premium all-inclusives (better known as your stush fete), boat-rides, pavement limes and the all white fete. Each outfit below was customized to my body. Would you believe the high waist shorts I have on was once long leggings that I cut to fit my shape?  So pack a pair of trusty scissors in your suitcase or design your outfit before you get to Trinidad.

Monday Wear 

Carnival Monday used to be known as the casual day masqueraders could wear a tank top with some pum pum shorts and their band’s insignia somewhere on the outfit. Carnival Tuesday was the glam day where you got to rock your costume and best fashion gems, but those days have changed.

  Carnival Feathers 

Lately, most of my costumes has had some kind of feathered wings or headpiece and I usually bring them back home with me. My personal way of bringing back my costume is via a garment bag. I ordered a large garment bag from Amazon and make sure I never forget it when traveling. Some people use large trash bags but those can rip.  Read more on how I bring home my carnival feathers

Carnival Makeup 

Decided to do your makeup yourself? – Apply milk of magnesia or Mehron Makeup- Skin Prep Pro before doing your carnival makeup, that’s what will make it almost sweat proof. If you’re feeling too lazy to do your make up yourself OR you believe a professional will do a better job. Here is a list of MUAs based in Trinidad. Most of them began taking bookings in September 2018 so contact them asap.
