Note
Are you reading anything if you are what and how is it going
first of all thx for the ask i appreciate the boredom remedy
and i just finished a book called Enter The Body by Joy McCullough!!! its about the women in shakespeare's most famous works taking back their stories and telling them the way they want them to be told.
it was described as "Entrancing, fiercely feminist," by Shelf Awareness, which i think really sums it up.
There are only 3 stories retold, (Ophelia, Juliet, and Cordielia) but many other of shakespeare's girls are present
the girls all have dialogue with each other in play format, and they each retell their stories in verse
overall its very beautiful and a rec from my ride or die, so i fully recommend.
anyways, thanks again kailee bc this was rlly good ams you should read it!!!!

Title: We Are the Ashes, We Are the Fire
Author: Joy McCullough
Series or standalone: standalone
Publication year: 2021
Genres: fiction, contemporary, poetry, historical fiction, mental health, feminism
Blurb: Em Morales' older sister was raped by another student after a frat party. A jury eventually found the rapist guilty on all counts - a remarkable verdict that Em felt more than a little responsible for, since she was her sister's strongest advocate on social media during the trial. Her passion and outspokenness helped dissuade the DA from settling for a plea deal. Em's family would have real justice...but the victory is short-lived. In a matter of minutes, justice vanishes as the judge turns the Morales family's world upside down again by sentencing the rapist to no prison time. While her family is stunned, Em is literally sick with rage and guilt. To make matters worse, a news clip of her saying that the sentence "makes me want to use a fucking sword" goes viral. From this low point, Em must find a new reason to go on and help her family heal, and she finds it in the unlikely form of the story of a 15th-century French noblewoman: Marguerite de Bressieux, legendary as an avenging knight for rape victims.

Enter the Body by Joy McCullough - Book Review
Tumblr media
In the room beneath a stage's trapdoor, Shakespeare’s dead teenage girls compare their experiences and retell the stories of their lives, their loves, and their fates in their own words. Bestselling author Joy McCullough offers a brilliant testament to how young women can support each other and reclaim their stories in the aftermath of trauma.
Enter the Body by Joy McCullough
Published: March 14, 2023 by Dutton Books for Young Readers
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Two reasons this caught my attention: I'm currently working my way through Shakespear's plays, and I'm currently obsessed with the musical Six and this gave off a similar vibe.
Joy McCullough does an amazing job giving these characters their own voices. And giving them the opportunity to rewrite their stories was simply the best thing.
As they mention themselves, in their original stories they're mainly just props used by men in a play written by a man. A man who was really weird when it came to writing women, and McCullough really emphasized that fact. So hearing them tell it themselves, as opposed to all the other retelling out there that just attempt to make them look better than originally written, truly made them their own person and gave depth to characters who are just as important to the story that treated them expendable.
Personally, I'd love to hear more from the other women beneath that trap door.

By Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH
Team Trump won a decisive victory on November 5, 2024 in part because of the dream team that came together in the last few months of the campaign including Trump, Vance, Gabbard, Kennedy, Musk all supported with a final hour endorsement from podcaster Joe Rogan. Part of the truly populist win was the mantra MAHA or Make America Healthy Again coined by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
With the dizzying array of concerns that have emerged over the past five years, how will the administration prioritize the ongoing safety concerns of the genetic COVID-19 vaccines effectively mandated in children by school requirements without exemptions. While states such as Texas have banned COVID-19 vaccine mandates given the clear and present danger posed by taking a shot, other states have not provided those protections. Dangers from routine childhood vaccines, pharmaceutical drugs, water, food, and air all could get on the public health radar screen for intervention during Trump #47.
Two action items within the control of the President—show your support!
Deny certain federal funding to any state that does not provide an as-of-right philosophical exemption for current and future vaccines for all citizens in every setting. This would ensure a student's right to an education as well as an employee’s right to work is preserved and protected. Mandates must end; this became clear as a result of the COVID-19 era.
End liability protection for the vaccine industry and restore America’s Seventh Amendment right to a trial by jury, by either advancing Rep. Paul Gosar’s bill, HR 9828, that restores liability, or, direct the head of the CDC to take all steps possible to support the removal of liability protections for vaccine manufacturers.

"Not all stories have happy endings. I cannot promise this one will either. But I am certain you will be glad you stayed with [Abigail] to the end. She deserves that much - a witness, one who says I see you, hear you, I'm better for knowing your story" -Joy McCullough, Blood Water Paint
Abigail and Nicholas as Judith and Holofernes (ft. Wendigo Hannibal). Ahhh, I'm so glad this one is done! I really wanted to do Artemisia Gentileschi' version of this painting because she's a badass and I adore her, but the tone of Caravaggio's composition fits more with the Abigail and Nicholas scene. The quote is from Blood Water Paint which is about Artemisia Gentileschi (highly recommended, but pls check trigger warnings first). Painting referenced is Judith and Holofernes by Caravaggio.

Bonnie McCullough & Damon Salvatore
He was holding her now, and his arms were strong and certain and a yearning joy told Bonnie that she never wanted him to let go. She felt her eyes drift shut, but at the same time, she could sense what Damon was doing. He was bending down to her, slowly, and then his lips touched hers, so softly, so gently that it was actually a shock of sweetness to all her senses. A throb of pure heavenly bliss pulsed through her body, dissolving her so that she was all softness, all gentleness as she kissed him back. They were in perfect harmony, and they could never be out of tune.

top seven reads of 2023
thanks for the tag, @mostlyinthemorning! I didn't read as much this year as I would have liked (and nearly all of my reading was done on planes/trains) but here are the seven books I enjoyed the most this year in no particular order:
Tumblr media
Enter the Body by Joy McCullough
Four of Shakespeare's tragic heroines tell their stories in verse after they leave the stage, and reclaim the stories. This was utterly gorgeous and I loved it so much that I think I've recommended it to everyone I know lol.
Tumblr media
Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune
Made me weep uncontrollably in public!
Tumblr media
The Death I Gave Him by Em X. Liu
Yes, I am in my Shakespeare retelling era and I'm not sorry about it. Hamlet, but make it sci-fi!
Tumblr media
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
I'm late to the game on this one, but I enjoyed it and I would die for Blue Sargent.
Tumblr media
Aces Wild: A Heist by Amanda DeWitt
Be gay ace, do crimes? A bunch of ace fandom friends meet in person to pull off a Vegas heist. Also contains a line about a Honda Civic that made me crumble to dust lmao.
Tumblr media
Crush by Richard Siken
I know I'm behind on this too but I finally bought myself a copy of Crush and devoured it and cried. A lot.
Tumblr media
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati
Honorable mention: The Charm Offensive by Allison Cochrun (because I read most of it in 2022)
Tagging @alienajackson @jettestar @blackandwhiteandrose @youtastelike-sunlight @chelle-68 @rmd-writes @treluna4 @hippolotamus @dinnfameron @schitthappens (no pressure tagging because I know how hard it is to read actual books some years!!)
