Today's Date is May 11th, 2024 and today's card is Atomize
[ID Atomize depicts a human figure being enveloped my a bright green mist. If you've ever seen Avengers Infinity War it kinda looks like when all those characters got turned into dust but like midair dust after the thanos snap. But like very bright green in this case. Below this guy is grass and theres a bus and some rocks around him in the distance. Wayy in the distance there's a jagged metal tower.
Its an Instant that costs 2 colorless mana, 1 Black mana, and 1 Green mana. Its rarity is Rare.
Its rules text reads "Destroy target nonland permanent. Proliferate. (Choose any number of permanents and/or players, then give each another counter of each kind already there.)"
Its flavor text reads "Plasma rifles---separating soft tissues from hard ones since 2077."
Its artist is Josu Solano and its print year is 2024. Its from the Universes Beyond set Fallout. End ID.]

Side story number 2 takes us to a spooky carnival, perhaps the same we saw in the main story so briefly? No Tyvar but more thoughts as usual under the break.
- Duskmourn having "safe zones" at first seems odd, but if the House feeds on fear in the same way that it seems to directly feed on its inhabitants, it makes sense. The anxiety of never really knowing when the safe zone is no longer safe, that you won't have any warning when the monsters of the House break through. (Still very Amonkhet vibes. Very Naktamun's relationship with the Hekma. Naktamun is basically haunted anyways.)
- These Benefactors hanging ominously out of frame can't be a good thing. Hope in a world like Duskmourn is a thing to be dangled tantalizingly in front of you so you don't realize you have just walked off a cliff.
- The naming conventions here reek of that post about how living in the first generation born after the apocalypse would suck because half the girls would be named Hope.
- City has been doomed by Dawn's narration that he's going to lead them one day. She just handed him a big red flag.
- The side stories emphasize the places to stop and breathe in Duskmourn, which is nice. The plane, as we know, isn't self-sustaining but it's still cool to see multi-generational settlements of people who seem to be native to the plane.
- The mention of glimmers as something people have is interesting. Waiting to hear more since they seem important.
- The idea of a place not only being temporarily safe but continually untarnished by the House is fascinating and makes me rethink a few things about the plane. Is hope or happiness some kind of deterrent to the House, hence the carnival being untouched? I doubt I'll get all my questions answered.
- The art by Josu Solano has a wonderful dreamlike quality. Very Dixit.
- ooh, so the House hasn't always been parasitizing other planes. And the pseudo-omenpaths it can open are endangering the denizens of the plane. Neat to see the ecological effects of cross-planar intermingling. Would've been interesting and thematically apt to dive into the themes of exploitation harming the natural balance of the plane on Thunder Junction but they were more focused on the villain theme than the western theme.
- also, not the fate I'd imagined for City but nevertheless he has been corrupted so I'll mark that in a successful prediction column

Foreboding Steamboat (Murders at Karlov Manor Commander No. 28, Illus. Josu Solano)
Murders at Karlov Manor is fully spoiled, and the big-format JPGs and PNGs are rolling in! I think I'm going to make a Top 10 post and a post on my general feelings about the set, but for now let's look at some individual pieces.
Is full of references to classic murder mysteries, and Foreboding Steamboat is obviously representing Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Mississippi." I'm feeling very ambivalent on the high number of references in this set, but this is one that I like. Not because of the reference, but because of the artwork and how it fits in the setting. By which I mean - it doesn't. A steamboat doesn't really fit on Ravnica. But in this case, the illustration exudes the kind of enjoyable weirdness that was also present in some older Magic sets.
From a marketing standpoint, the Dimir are a bit of a pain in the neck. For a brief period after the original Ravnica block, they got a bit less secretive, becoming librarians, information industry workers, etc. But in MKM, after the Phyrexian invasion, they're back to being "the guild that doesn't exist." The problem is, in visual terms, WotC wants strong "branding" so that the players can identify more easily with their guilds. That usually means guild symbols and motifs being plastered everywhere. But that's not exactly what a secretive guild like the Dimir would do...
There are no obvious Dimir guild logos to be found on Foreboding Steamboat, but small hints like the flecks of blue light over the water or blue streaks in the smoke hint at it being at least affiliated with the guild. I imagine that in-universe, no one really knows why such a boat exists and who runs it. There are no registration papers, no official owners. It just appears every now and then, and suddenly, certain people feel strangely compelled to go on a boat cruise on Ravnica's canals. Before the Azorius or the Boros can do anything, the boat disappears again, just like the people that went aboard. For me, it almost feels more like a supernatural horror thing than a murder mystery thing.
Because MKM is a backdrop set (and is more about the "murder mystery" gimmick than the guilds), it remains to be seen where WotC will go with the Dimir. I hope they don't go back to "actually they have an overt arm that's managing libraries," because that would basically invalidate what they did with them in this set. But until then, we can only wait.

Artist: Josu Solano Title: Evening “Last piece for Darek mentorship. This one was all about getting the idea across in less than 5 hours to represent a real task where the image is due in such amount of time. Brief was to do victorian looking town, not very fantastical or futuristic, yet not simply historical accurate to any particular town. Just being playfull with different types of architecture and silhouettes.”
