Block Z (2020)
Tumblr media
Strictly speaking “unremarkable” doesn’t mean bad; only “not particularly interesting or surprising”. I wasn’t bored while watching Block Z but only because I kept thinking it would take advantage of the opportunities presented to it. Instead, it simply repeats the same things we’ve seen before.
Medical students PJ (Julia Barretto), Erika (Maris Racal), Myles (McCoy de Leon), and Block Z basketball team captain Lucas (Joshua Garcia) find themselves in the middle of a rapidly-spreading viral epidemic. The virus turns people into raging monsters and spreads through bites. When the military quarantines the university, the friends’ only chance of escape comes from the school's president, Gelo (Yves Flores) - the son of a politician. A helicopter is coming for him on a rooftop across campus. Meanwhile, PJ’s father, Mario (Ian Veneracion), a security guard (Dimples Romana), and a young girl whose mother succumbed to the virus (Miel Espinoza) also navigate the dangerous corridors.
Released in the Philippines in January, the film was produced before the pandemic, which means it never had the chance to capture some of the real-world fears it easily could’ve. You can’t blame it for this, but amusingly, it almost accidentally does have something to say about politicians not being trustworthy and doctors/nurses being our salvation from a global threat - almost. There isn’t any kind of deeper meaning to any of this plot. Block Z doesn’t have any kind of Philippino flair either. There’s a message about family, teamwork, and sticking together but that’s not unique. The zombies aren't given any kind of novel spin. None of the country's customs or beliefs are incorporated into the plot.
It’s just a generic zombie movie. The group gets gradually whittled away as time passes and they move from one building to the next (8 hours to get across campus, really?). You know the drill. Someone gets bitten. Tears are shed as they realize what's coming. There's a heroic sacrifice. Despite everything, someone struggles to grasp that their loved one is a lost cause, etc. The gore and violence are fine but no kills stand out as unique. You might jump a few times. Mostly, you can tell as soon as the characters walk into a room if this is a safe spot where they can discuss their feelings or if more monsters will appear. When put in peril, the survivors handle themselves reasonably. Not so stupid that you grow frustrated (except in one instance) but never clever enough to make you perk up in excitement.
Director Mikhail Red compares his film to 28 Days Later but he’s done nothing to innovate - as if the genre has learned nothing since 2002. I can’t speak Tagalog so I can’t attest to the performances but they seemed fine for what they were. The material the performers are working off of is workman-like. You could do far worse in terms of stories about flesh-eating ghouls but no one will remember Block Z down the line. (Original Tagalog with English subtitles, October 25, 2020)

#JoshLia earlier at the #UnexpectedlyYours Block Screening ❤️ A film that will take you back to the 90’s when Robin and Sharon gave everyone the best kilig love story, fast forward today and it still feels the same with an added dose of the power tandem of #JoshLia making everyone melt with the way they look at each other, how they say their lines with much intensity and how they perfectly compliment each other. It’s indeed a match created in God’s perfect timing, congrats @garciajoshuae @juliabarretto @reallysharoncuneta @robinhoodpadilla for the box office film! ✨🙌 #JoshuaGarcia #JuliaBarretto

Almost every girl would love to be with a funny guy—someone who will always make her happy. Girls are often emotional. Most of them fake smile and pretend to be happy though the truth is, they are deeply broken. Most probably they look for someone that will make them smile again. Someone who will throw funny jokes and even the dumbest ones will do. Someone who will make himself look funny —- acting like a gay in front of a girl. It might be embarrassing for the guy but he will do that anyway only to make a girl laugh. A good sense of humor is also a characteristic of a funny guy. With his sense of humor, any girl he will talk with will never get bored because he can manage to keep the conversation going. That is what most of the girls are attracted to. No good looking guy can overpower the appeal of a funny guy. Even if you are the most handsome and hot guy in the world, if you cannot make your girl happy then you are nothing compared to a guy who can make a girl smile and laugh everyday.

MMFF 2016- VKJ: A Movie Review
Vince and Kath and James (VKJ), Star Cinema’s romantic- comedy entry for the 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival under Dir. Theodore Boborol (the director of—My Big Love 2008 and Just The Way You Are 2015) stand to be in the top 4 grossing films on the festival’s first day despite of being a mediocre film. Masses, especially young people, liked the movie considering that it was from a viral ‘textserye’ online and it has the same lifestyle they are doing (and they admire to do). Plus, the performance of novelty actor and actresses like, the prettiest of all barrettos—Julia Barretto, Star Cinema’s Young Jhon Lloyd—Joshua Garcia and #Hashtag’s kilig king—Ronnie Alonte.
youtube
Since it was my first time to write a review (on my personal blog *as part of the course requirements*), let us talk what I liked, and I didn’t like (as advised by my professor * hi sir *) by looking through those VKJs: Vadly Keeps the Joy and Vaguely Killed the Joy.
The things I liked—VKJ: Vadly Keeps the Joy
Joshua Garcia’s performance- Vince, played by the young Jhon Lloyd (according to them, and I agree ‘cause it cannot be denied) of the Philippine’s Show business—Joshua Garcia. He just gave a simple yet exemplary performance with effortless charm and appeal that the audience wanted to see, since he appeared in the movie—Barcelona by Olivia Lamasan

Beyond expectation: Julia Baretto and Maris Racal Learns- Based on their previous performances on television and big screen. Julia and Maris, (I think) always perform with full effort to impress the audiences and to give justice on their role, na minsan nagiging over-acting at puro arte nalang, but in this movie they perform it right and well trained (thanks star magic workshop), Julia perfectly portrayed a boyish yet charming role and Maris as a funny, bubbly and cheerful supporting character.
Natural Lighting = Light Vibe — Lighting gives mood and vibe to the story that the movie trying to portray, VKJ gave a natural light that is not so vivid nor desaturated nor with such cinematic filter that apt to the story that they are telling.
Direction— I like how direk Theodore Boborol gave chemistry to the main actor and actress, Julia and Joshua. He completely touch and tickle the romantic excitement of each person in the cinema (seems weird, but direk got me too *lol*)

The thinks I didn’t like—VKJ: Vaguely Killed the Joy
Ronnie Alonte’s performance— Having a two entries for this year’s MMFF, VKJ and Seklusyon, I’m wondering where did he perform his best as an actor, because basically not on VKJ. I just don’t like the way he acts but the character is good, they should’ve think of other artist to do the character’s portrayal. He didn’t put much effort on his role, or if he did, he should undergo another workshop (in order for future it’ll become—Ronnie Alonte learns)

Product placement— At first I thought, it would be another Star Cinema produced film full of commercial products but I was wrong. Not full, just a little. There was a scene that Kath (Julia) was so depressed when his father came from abroad, his dad left them before and build his own family overseas, and then Vince (Joshua) came with an ice cream, Kath’s favorite food, again. Vince (Joshua) came with an ice cream, Kath’s favorite food, again. Vince (Joshua) came with a SELECTA Ice Cream, Kath’s favorite food. Then, she recovered from stress (thanks to Vince and to SELECTA)
Basic cinematography/ camera movement— Basic, I believe that if people are doing something for business they should have known the basic and amateur thing. (But for ME, in this movie) All I can see is basic shots, I believe that every film student or students taking up prod subjects can also create (or surpass) those kind of shots. They should’ve shown an ‘instagrammable’ shot, for the young people are into it nowadays.
Mediocre storyline— I am looking for more socially relevant star cinema produced film, they could tackle a not so-fictional-yet-real-life-story happening that those young people encountered and the behavior they should possess (since that they r market), if u are looking for dept film VKJ is not for you.
Bonus point
Motion Graphics- I love the placements and tracking of the text’s motion graphics, simple, the color is not vibrant, as what I’ve seen on trailer (well, ofcourse, it’s only white strokes and text) ooops. And that’s the subsequent little thing I didn’t like—we, (or just me) cannot recognize from whom was the text that popping on the side of their cellphone. If that was the message they received or that was the message they sent (unless there were a name written or a color coding)
