To say Rebekah was flustered would be an understatement.  She was rushing about the recently finished house trying to find a necklace she could have sworn was on the dresser this morning and Marcel where the fuck have you put it?

Her husband laughed at her antics before grabbing her hands, “Beks you are wearing the necklace.  And calm down sweetheart, everything will be fine.”

“But it has to be perfect!” She protested.

Marcel shook his head, “it already will be.  You’ll be surrounded by everyone you love and nothing’s gone wrong for 4 years.”

“But you know what my br-“ she began.

He cut her off, “screw what your brothers think.  I hardly think they’ll notice if there are a few sausage rolls missing.”

“But what if it rains?” Rebekah persisted.

Marcel pulled her towards the kitchen, “then we have plenty of space to accommodate everyone.  Honestly Beks stop worrying.  Everything will be fine.”

“What would I do without you?” She said as she reached up to kiss him.

He smirked, “who knows.”

They were interrupted by the doorbell ringing.  The 2 of them pulled apart and went to the front door to greet the first guests.  When Rebekah opened the door they saw her twin brother, his wife and their 2 excited children.

“Auntie Beka!” Hannah exclaimed excitedly.

Rebekah smiled and spun the little girl around, “Hello little miss.”

Marcel bent down to give her brother a high five and Daniel enthusiastically slapped the vampire’s hand.  The twins ran into the house, excited to see what it was like as the adults headed through to the kitchen.  There Rebekah fixed everybody a drink and they made small talk until the next guests arrived, mainly because she still didn’t trust her brother alone with Marcel.

A few minutes later there was a knock at the door and Marcel went answer it.  He opened it to greet his father figure and his fiancé.  Klaus enveloped him in a hug before continuing into the house.  Cami gave him a quick hug before going to the kitchen.

“Uncle Nik!” Daniel yelled as he barrelled into his uncle.

Klaus laughed at his nephew before scooping the small boy into his arms, “hello to you Danny.”

“We’re playing hide and seek with Daddy and Uncle Marcel,” he explained quickly.

He put the boy back on the floor, “well let’s find you the best hiding place.”

Cami watched from through the archway with a fond smile as Klaus chased his nephew through the living room.  It made her remember how it had been when Hope was only little.  They had played hide and seek for hours in the compound; somehow Klaus always got caught first.  But it also made her heartache when she remembered she would never have that with the love of her life- a vampire’s curse.

Rebekah approached Cami, “come on, come to help me sort the shit out for the boys so they can feel important.”

The younger vampire allowed her soon to be sister-in-law to pull her towards the kitchen where she pulled her sleeves up and helped Rebekah sort the meat out.

Next came Keelin and Freya with their 3-year-old son Finn.  Klaus opened the door to greet them, “there’s my favourite nephew.”

“Don’t let Daniel hear that,” Keelin teased as she hugged him.

Freya gave her wife a light shove, “I’m pretty sure Daniel would agree.”

“The twins do adore their cousin,” Klaus said pointedly.

Keelin held her hands up, “Alright you two.”

“Nik are you going to let them in or keep them all to yourself?” Kol called through the house.

He yelled back, “well you can have them.  They’re quite a boring really.”

Freya gave him the birdie as they walked past and he smirked.

“Hello dear sister,” Kol greeted her with a kiss on the cheek, “Finn.”

The youngest original held his fist up and the small boy eagerly hit his against his uncle’s.  Kol took his nephew from his sister and shooed her towards the garden, “go save Klaus and Marcel from the confusion that is barbecuing.”

Freya saluted her little brother and headed off to assist the other boys.  Keelin followed Kol into the kitchen where Cami and Rebekah sat on the counters gossiping.  Keelin grabbed herself a beer before joining their conversation.  Kol watched them with a smile before following his sister out to the garden.

15 minutes later the doorbell rang for the last time.  Elijah, Hayley, Hope, Josh and Aiden stood on the doorstep when Rebekah opened the door.  The 4 adults all looked slightly sheepish and Hope was stood with a smirk on her face.

“What took you all so long?” Rebekah demanded.

Hope gave her aunt a sly smile, “some people were busy.”

“Oh yes and you weren’t on the phone to Roman for an hour,” Aiden fired back.

Hope gave him a shove before heading into the house and Josh hugged Rebekah, “now where are my gorgeous niece and nephew?”

“Chasing each other around the garden while Finn attempts to keep up,” she answered, “now please dear brother help Klaus do this bloody bbq because Freya is 0 help.”

Elijah laughed and followed the others into the household.

The BBQ was now in full swing.  Surprisingly enough Elijah was the one in charge of the cooking.  Kol, Klaus and Aiden were playing with the 3 children by the shady oak at the back of the garden.  Marcel and Josh were talking with Davina, Cami was telling tales from the bar to Freya and Rebekah whilst Hayley, Hope and Keelin talked werewolf business.

Rebekah took a moment to watch everyone.  Considering everything they had been through in the past 18 years it was a miracle everyone had come out the other side.  Hope, her poor niece, had taken the brunt of the villains but now she was happy, helping the family witches maintain peace in the quarter and Roman had finally made a move on her; Rebekah had never seen the girl happier.  Kol, her twin brother, who had been through so much stress in his a thousand years had not been seen without a smile on his face since he met his wife.  Originally he had been unsure about adopting the twins but once Daniel had smiled at him he had been in adoration of them.

Klaus was finally happy; no stress, no paranoia and no constant need to protect his family.  Cami kept a smile on his face and a fond look in his eye.  With the exception of Hope, Rebekah had never seen him look at anyone that way before and now it was normal for him to be like this.  She smiled as her brother picked up Finn and spun him around, laughing as the little boy shrieked with joy.

Elijah interrupted her train of thought, “everybody forms an orderly queue!  No one will be getting anything if you push.”

The extended Mikaelson family gathered calmly around him and the massive BBQ covered in an elaborate array of food.  Elijah began to dish up to the number of hungry supernatural creatures.

Later in the evening when everyone had been fed and the children were tucked away in the spare bedroom the adults sat around the fire pit talking about their lives.  Josh was sharing a tale of an interesting woman who had come into the bar the other week.  Everyone was laughing by the end of it and Cami began to tell a story of how the other vampire had nearly set the kitchen on fire.

“It was an easy mistake to make,” Josh defended.

Aiden shook his head, “babe I hardly think nearly setting the kitchen on fire is an easy mistake to make.”

“Well in my defence-” he began.

Cami shot him down, “there is no defence in the world for what you did.”

“I didn’t know cling film would melt!” Josh exclaimed.

The group laughed and Marcel sighed, “and here I thought I had made a wise decision to make you a vampire.  I may now be regretting that.”

“I’d be dead if you hadn’t,” he pointed out.

The older vampire laughed, “very true.”

“How’s the compound coming along Nik?” Kol asked.

His older brother smiled, “it’s coming along quite well.  All the houses are built and they’re moving on to all the plumbing and bits.  I’m hoping they’ll begin furnishing in a few weeks.”

“And then it’s the fun part,” Hope announced.

Klaus laughed fondly at his daughter, “yes.  We all know you’ll spend hours agonising over getting your bedroom just right.”

“Hey!” She protested, “it has to be perfect.”

Kol smirked at his niece, “so your company will be impressed?”

Hope glared at him, “I’ll kill you.”

“You can’t,” he sang.

Instead of answering, she launched at her uncle and they began chasing each other around the garden.  They all watched with amused faces as Hope tackled Kol to the ground.  With a flick of her wrist, he was bound to the grass.  She gave him a wicked grin.

“Just because I can’t kill you doesn’t mean I can’t make you suffer,” she said victoriously.

Kol groaned, “Davinaaa.”

“You earned it,” his wife answered with a smile.

He glared at his brother, “she is so your daughter Nik.”

Klaus grinned, “I know.  I’m so proud.”

A través de una narración no lineal, la obra propone un collage de sonidos, imágenes y texto que reflexiona sobre la vinculación entre lo sonoro y lo táctil en relación con lo cinematográfico. El título hace referencia precisamente a estos dos sentidos a través del acto de generar una nota musical cuando se roza el borde de una copa con líquido.

Mary Helena Clark es una artista norteamericana que trabaja con películas, vídeos e instalaciones. Su obra utiliza el lenguaje del collage para explorar estados disociativos a través del cine, haciendo que converjan temas y estilos dispares que evocan una lógica o un código externos. Por medio de las convenciones de la narrativa, del lenguaje y del género, sus películas exploran las subjetividades cambiantes y los límites de la cámara subjetiva. Sus trabajos se han exhibido en centros como Whitney Museum of American Art, Museo Tamayo de México, Kadist Art Foundation, Anthology Film Archive o en festivales como Toronto, Róterdam, Nueva York, Courtisane o Ann Arbor.

Película filmada en blanco y negro y 16 mm procesado a mano, en la que una joven estudiante, Audrey Benac, tras conocer que su abuelo era violinista, comienza a profundizar en la historia que hay detrás y descubre la figura de Kathleen Parlow, una celebrada violinista que fue mentora de su abuelo. La investigación le lleva a los archivos de la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York en busca de una rara grabación producida en 1909 y titulada Veslemøy´s Song.

Sofia Bohdanowicz es cineasta canadiense con base en Toronto. Pese a su juventud ya posee una reconocida trayectoria cinematográfica, con varios cortometrajes y dos largometrajes, que han sido presentados y premiados en festivales tan prestigiosos como Locarno, Berlinale, New York Film Festival, BFI Londres, TIFF, BAFICI o Viennale.

La obra toma su nombre en homenaje a Sojourner Truth, mujer que nació bajo la esclavitud y que escapó de sus amos en 1826. Abolicionista y activista por los derechos de la mujer fue la primera mujer negra en ganar un juicio contra un hombre blanco. A través de su legado y del de otras mujeres como Rebecca Jackson, Alice Coltrane y las militantes del Combahee River Collective, Smith reimagina en la película el mítico Museo de Arte del Desierto al Aire Libre de Joshua Tree, diseñado por Noah Purifoy, como un espacio radical para la utopía feminista. Allí un grupo de mujeres se reúnen para reinterpretar la icónica fotografía que Billy Ray realizó a un grupo de chicos para la revista Life en 1966, tras los disturbios de Watts.

Cauleen Smith es cineasta, artista multimedia y docente estadounidense nacida en 1967. Se licenció en cine por The San Francisco State University y en la actualidad imparte clases en la prestigiosa escuela CalArts (Los Ángeles). Su obra abarca desde encuentros afrofuturistas hasta investigaciones sobre los traumas en la diáspora africana incidiendo en los problemas a los que se enfrentan las mujeres negras en la actualidad. Materializa su trabajo tanto en películas como en dibujos e instalaciones. Entre sus películas encontramos títulos como Drylongso (1998), H-E-L-L-O (2014) o Sojourner (2018), que han sido presentados en prestigiosos festivales internacionales como Sundance, South by Southwest, BFI Londres o Róterdam.

Cómo afronta la maternidad una artista cuya obra gira en torno al yo. Realizada durante su propio embarazo y lo primeros meses de vida de su hijo, Kathryn Elkin se plantea si este proceso puede o debe formar parte de la representación. En la obra se combina lo autobiográfico con la cultura pop, los amigos, una bolera, un estudio de grabación, la transformación de un cuerpo y el cuestionamiento del ego a través de la memoria colectiva y las diferentes voces de una comunidad artística. Todo presentado con importantes dosis de improvisación y buen humor en torno a los procesos del trabajo creativo.

Kathryn Elkin, artista nacida en Belfast y formada en The Glasgow School of Art (2005), se graduó en el Goldsmiths College (2012). En 2014 participó en el proyecto “Artistas en el archivo de la BBC”. Desde 2016 ha expuesto en centros como la Tate Modern, el ICA - Institute of Contemporary Arts de Londres o la Transmission Gallery y ha participado en festivales como Visions du Reel, Nueva York Film Festival o Courtisane.

Obra que funde arte y vida como las dos caras de la misma moneda. Imágenes temblorosas grabadas con teléfonos móviles, de protestas y represiones obtenidas de internet, conviven con los poemas de CAConrad y Eileen Myles, acompañados de la música de la pionera de la experimentación sonora, Pauline Oliveros, y la propia Beatrice hablando y bailando con su hijo, como símbolo del futuro, en el que quienes lo habiten entenderán la visión que teníamos del mundo a través del arte que les habremos dejado, de ahí ese “Espero ser ruidoso cuando esté muerto” del título.

Beatrice Gibson, artista visual nacida en Reino Unido en 1978, es licenciada en Filosofía por la Universidad de Mánchester y doctora en Cultura Visual por la escuela Goldsmiths Center for Research Architecture de Londres. Con sus trabajos en cine y vídeo ha conseguido importantes reconocimientos a nivel internacional: dos veces ganadora del Tiger Award en Róterdam (2009 y 2013) y premiada en Art Bassel 2015. En la primera edición de she makes noise proyectamos su película The Tiger’s Mind.

1. MF Doom (Mediavuelta remix), "Go With the Flow (12" version)", Operation: Doomsday, Foldle 'Em / Metal Face, 1999 / 2008 / 2018, USA  

June haze remix of the original version of Doom's "Go With The Flow." I have the recording as collected on the 2008 Metal Face reissue of the oft reissued Operation: Doomsday. The 12" version is sparse and easier to remix than the album version. I ambiened verse, almost reducing it to rap soundz, but no disrespect is intended. Hopefully, you have a well worn issue of the album on your shelf.

2. Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, "Rapela", Genes and Spirits, M.E.L.T., 2000, South Africa

"Rapela" means pray in Zulu. Genes and Spirits is full of genius moments in which Molelekwa and company fused S.A. jazz, hip-hop, kwaito and electronica. All innovation duly credited, the two barely syncopated notes introducing the deceptively simple first theme of "Rapela" are my favorite part of the album. The joyful canon that follows, like one of Chick Corea's children's songs, is buoyed by the rest of the band and eases into a supercrisp, 21st century jazz take on the same melody, before snapping into a breathtaking, unified turnaround. All fusion aside, "Rapela" is beautiful because of very clever writing that the listener hears as organic.

3. Sons of Kemet, "My Queen is Ada Eastman", Your Queen Is A Reptile, Impulse!, 2018, U.K.

On Your Queen Is A Reptile, Shabaka Hutchings and Sons of Kemet raise up a fist to acknowledge the power of black women and lower a withering gaze at conventional British history - embodied by the queen - that declines to recognize the impact of black women on that history. Ada Eastman was Hutchings great-grandmother, his family's matriarch from Barbados.

Hutchings, Theon Cross (tuba) and Seb Rochford (drums) cook at a FAMU drumline temperature beneath Joshua Idehen's lines. "I'm born strong, the song of an immigrant / [...] I'll be here when your cities are sediment / and only your borders and fences are left / I'll be here when your banks stop selling debt / and all your leaders stop selling death / And you've lost all relevance."

This is the most Impulse!-y music Impulse! has released since Black Unity and Magic of Ju-ju, fifty or so years ago.

4. Donald Byrd, "Places and Spaces", Places and Spaces, Blue Note, 1975, USA

I'll admit that while I have about a dozen or so Byrd, Blackbyrd and Mizell brothers recordings from this era, and "Lansana's Priestess" played a key role in ramping my wedding reception song list from stun to kill, I had never heard Places and Spaces before a few months ago. I heard a clubby remix of the title track at a pizza place, recognized the sample from Pete Rock's "All The Places" (P.R. has sampled Mizell and Byrd more than a few times), recognized the trumpet as obviously Donald Byrd and the arrangements as so perfect they must be Mizell brothers, and tracked down the album that afternoon. I'm resisting the urge to gush too much about this record.

5. Blackrock, "Yeah Yeah", 7" single, Select-O-Hits, 1969, USA

This lone release from a group of Stax and Hi session musicians in Memphis is thunder that predates the first Funkadelic album by a few months. It's an odd and effective bit of song arranging, with the first, minor key section not serving an obvious role except to amplify the overjoyed, major key guitar solo you didn't realize was going to microwave your face a few seconds later.

6. MonoNeon, "Shooting For the Stars With My Laser Beam", I Don't Care Today (Angels and Demons in Lo-Fi), self release, 2018, USA

MonoNeon is the freek funkateer handle of Memphis bass virtuoso Dwayne Thomas Jr. I Don't Care Today is some clever shit, couching MonoNeon & friends' intimidating virtuosity and avante-garde experimentation on a futon of immediately approachable pyjama funk. Like the bedroom stoner, Sonic The Hedgehog funk that Thundercat rips but doesn't pull off quite as well because his music is too high fidelity. I just really like the guitar riff after the chorus.

7. Belair, "Samba For A Cold Warrior", Relax, You're Soaking It In, Belby Wetterman, 1980, USA

I have this recording from a Kev Beadle, Private Collection compilation. (Where does he find all of this not Brazilian, jazz samba?) The original seems to be small or private press on a microscopic label. I don't know much about this group. I presume guitarist Michael Belair is the leader. Broadly, "Samba For A Cold Warrior" fits a Kev Beadle presents comp well - small combo, small press, medium edge, mild Chick Corea-esque exotica. The big surprise is the vocal chorus that emerges from seven minutes of traded solos. "With the darkness dispelled by the radiance of day, the wiles of the wicked are driven away."

8. The Grodeck Whipperjenny, "Put Your Thing On Me", The Groedeck Whipperjenny, People, 1970, USA

You read that label correctly. James Brown's People label put this megaton psych rock shit out. Keyboardist Dave Matthews arranged for Brown and Brown released Matthew's project. The star of this album is guitarist Kenny Poole. Poole is a Cincinnati legend who went on to be better known for intricate finger picked sambas than for renal liquefying fuzz devastation. Great album.

9. M.C. Mell'o', "All Terrain M.C.s", Thoughts Released, Republic Records, 1990, U.K.

Rufff bounce from the godfather U.K. rapper isn't exactly as mell'o as jell'o. I won't pretend to analyze Mell'o' rhymes, because my London accent detection is not that sharp. You can tell it is ruff albeit smooth, though. Republic was house and disco master, Joey Negro's first label.

I love this era of beatmaking. Slamming rolands atop a funk break, every bass drum sample ever on the one, monosyllabic guitar and organ stabs interjected to fake a harmonic accompaniment, unintelligible vocal scratches, a chord change to keep it fresh, the strange piano interlude whose purpose isn't clear twenty five years later. Like Mell'o' would say, there is something "dusk to dawn, dawn to dusk, no fuss" about the beat. It would have lit a fire under my five year old self when it was released just as it does today.      

10. La Mecanica Popular, "Part 4 (Visiones)", Roza Cruz, Names You Can Trust, 2018, USA

La Mecanica Popular, NYC psych salseros, push their newest release into the crawling, sinister realms of live/evil bitches Miles or Eddie Palmieri with his oxygen burning Rhodes turned to t h i c k. "Visiones" churns when the the synth bass, keys and electric guitar unite for the final head. I like that, at least for Roza Cruz, La Mecanica have shunned going somewhere for digging in and being somewhere.

11. Piero Umiliani, "Danza del fuoco", La ragazza dalla pelle di luna, Schema, 1972, Italy

Umiliani is a minor hero of mine. There is a perfect Umiliani track for every life experience. "Danza del fuoco" is a bonus recording not on the original Omicron soundtrack for La ragazza dalla pelle di luni, a 70s exploitation flick about a white European supermodel making out with a Seychellois supermodel or something similarly highbrow.

"Sdoganare" means to sanction or clear through customs. I just discovered the Schema has a Bandcamp page.

12. Leon Ware (ft. Minnie Riperton), "Instant Love", Musical Massage, Gordy, 1976, USA

The second syllable of Riperton's performance, the rising guitar note in between the verses (from either David Walker or Ray Parker), the Mizell-perfect orchestration, this song is so good. I don't know how Ware and company put together such a carefully controlled experience that is dripping with truth and soul. Maybe it is what happens when you task a room full of master craftsmen each with a small task. Parker and Walker's guitar tones on this album have haunted me. I'll accept advice on ringing that bell.

13. Sinn Sisamouth, unknown recording, Cambodian Soul Sounds, Vol. II, Cambodian Soul

Sounds, early 1970s, Cambodia

Sisamouth was a hugely popular and influential figure in Cambodian popular music for decades before his disappearance and death at the hand of the Khmer Rouge. He songs are still re-recorded today. Intellectual property debates regarding the music of Sisamouth and his contemporaries continue to the present, as while the music remains beloved, the Khmer Rouge sought to erase the careers, legacies and lives of many of the musicians who made it. The first Cambodian intellectual copyright law was passed in 2003, but bootlegs are commonly traded and the Cambodian state lays claim to Sisamouth's compositions as property of the Ministry of Culture. Richard Rossa, the Swedish DJ behind the compilations donates sales from both volumes of Cambodian Soul Sounds to charities that support Cambodian youth and the preservation of Cambodian cultural history in an effort to square the fact that the recordings were unlicensed, or possibly un-licensable in the traditional sense.

: Roza Robotta tenía sólo 21 años cuando una noche de 1942, el tren de ganado lleno de prisioneres que la transportaba se detuvo en la rampa del campo de concentración y exterminio nazi de Auschwitz II – Birkenau, la infame extensión del campo principal de Auschwitz, en Polonia, que los nazis habían ordenado construir a unos 3 kms del original cuando, en 1941, se enteraron de que las instalaciones no bastaban para acoger semejante volumen de deportaciones llegadas de todos los territorios de la Europa controlada por el Tercer Reich. Escogieron para ubicarlo la localidad de Brzezinka (en alemán, Birkenau, de ahí el nombre del campo), en un inmenso prado del que aprovecharían algunas construcciones de madera para los primeros barracones.Roza, a pesar de su juventud, ya sabía perfectamente a dónde se dirigían, y la trágica suerte que la esperaba tras aquellas puertas. Había escuchado rumores en el gueto de la ciudad de Ciechánow donde había pasado encerrada los primeros dos años de la guerra por su ascendencia judía. Ciechánow había sido ocupada por los nazis a los 3 días de la invasión de Polonia, en 1939, y pronto acordonaron la zona más demacrada para habilitar el “barrio judío”, que sería liquidado dos años más tarde, con sus habitantes fusilades o deportades en masa a los campos de la muerte. La resistencia del gueto, con la que Roza colaboraba a través de su militancia en el grupo izquierdista judío Haschomer Hazair, ya sospechaba del destino de aquellos trenes y camiones que, cargados hasta los topes de condenades, marchaban periódicamente para volver vacíos. También sospechaban que, realmente, las promesas de los nazis que aseguraban que sólo se trataba de meras operaciones de reasentamiento en lugares de trabajo en el este polaco en mejores condiciones, no eran más que hipócritas eufemismos.Roza, sin embargo, no fue escogida para morir inmediatamente, a diferencia de la gran mayoría de personas que viajaban en aquel tren, enviadas a la cámara de gas a su llegada. Ella y otras pocas mujeres “afortunadas” fueron escogidas para el trabajo forzado. Roza fue remitida a un kommando (destino de trabajo esclavo dentro de algunas de las empresas o tareas vinculadas al campo) en la sección de indumentaria, mientras que al resto de mujeres las mandaron con el kommando de la fábrica de municiones de la Weichsel-Union-Werken, una filial de la Krupp (Krupp fue una de esas empresas que tras la guerra siguió activa como si nada después de aprovecharse cuanto pudieron de la mano de obra prisionera durante el holocausto), y donde se fabricaban entre otras cosas espoletas para granadas, y piezas para armamento que luego eran enviadas a los soldados del frente.Roza, conocida ya por algunas personas prisioneras en Birkenau, no tardó en ser contactada por la red de resistencia clandestina que existía dentro del campo. Dos importantes miembros de esa conspiración, Israel Gutman y Joshua Lejfer, enviaron a otro prisionero, Noah Zabludowicz (quien había conocido a Roza en el gueto de Ciechánow) a explicarle su plan y pedir su colaboración. Noah informó a Roza de su intención de preparar un levantamiento armado dentro de Birkenau que tendría un doble objetivo: por una parte, sabotear en la medida de lo posible la maquinaria de exterminio nazi, con el fin de retrasar o detener la matanza; por la otra, abrir una brecha de confusión y descontrol en el estricto régimen de vigilancia del campo que pudiera permitir un intento de fuga masivo. Conociendo el valor y la disposición de Roza, le propusieron formar parte de la misión más importante y peligrosa: conseguir los materiales explosivos necesarios para fabricar bombas con las que pretendían hacer explotar los crematorios. Roza aceptó sin dudar. Aquella misma noche, después del trabajo, se reunió con el resto de mujeres de Ciechánow de su confianza, y les propuso colaborar, ya que eran ellas las que habían sido destinadas a trabajar en la fábrica de armamento de la Unión. Su tarea consistiría en sacar pequeñas cantidades de pólvora en latitas que podían esconder fácilmente. Deberían hacerlo en el turno nocturno, donde los guardias estaban más cansados y los controles en la salida no eran tan rigurosos. Además, debían formar una red de confianza para poder aumentar la cantidad de pólvora que podrían sacar de cada vez. Hana Wajsblum, hermana pequeña de Ester Wajsblum, una de estas mujeres, y que sobrevivió al holocausto, expresaría así las palabras de su hermana mayor:“Podemos conseguirlo y sólo depende de nosotras – dijo Ester Wajsblum, una de ellas -, miles morirán, pero a lo mejor aún podemos salvar a alguien. No podemos permitir que millones de personas sean asesinadas a espaldas del mundo. Es nuestro deber crear las condiciones que hagan posible una huida en masa. […] No podemos ir como ganado al matadero. Tenemos que ofrecer resistencia.” (1) Ala Gertner (1912-1945)Así, estas tres mujeres, Ester Wajsblum, Ala Gertner y Regina Safirsztain, junto con aproximadamente una veintena de colaboradoras más que permanecen en el anonimato, comenzaron su contrabando de pólvora escondida en los paños de su cabeza (que los nazis nunca tocaban, pues consideraban que las prisioneras eran un foco de piojos y enfermedades contagiosas) o en la ropa interior, logrando pasar inadvertidas noche tras noche. Una vez entregada a Roza, ésta pasaba la pólvora a su contacto en la resistencia, para seguir circulando clandestinamente hasta alcanzar su destino. Filatov, un prisionero de guerra del ejército soviético, fabricaría las bombas. Algunas supervivientes afirman que llegaron a utilizar los cadáveres de sus compañeras y amigas muertas para ocultar el material sustraído, sabiendo que los cuerpos acabarían el día ardiendo en el crematorio, donde también había personal de la resistencia trabajando en el denominado Sonderkommando.Sonderkommando (Comando Especial) era el nombre que recibían unas brigadas especiales de trabajadores judíos creadas por los nazis en los principales campos de exterminio como Auschwitz o Sobibor. Su horrible tarea consistía en afrontar diariamente la tremenda carga de un dilema moral inhumano. Debían estar presentes en la llegada de los transportes de prisioneres, tranquilizar a las personas recién llegadas, convencerlas de que colaboraran, y una vez que los nazis habían seleccionado a aquellas que serían directamente enviadas a la cámara de gas, tenían que acompañarlas hasta allí, asegurándoles que sólo se trataba de una inofensiva ducha, después de la cual podrían reunirse de nuevo con el resto de sus familias. Una vez el gas hacía efecto y finalizaba la operación de matanza, llegaba la peor parte. Debían retirar los cadáveres, coger todo lo que aún pudiesen conservar de valor (dientes de oro, cabello, objetos que pudiesen haber escondido en conductos corporales como el ano…) y finalmente, transportar los cuerpos hasta el crematorio correspondiente y proceder a su incineración. A cambio de engañar a les suyes, y de guardar silencio sobre lo que les iban a hacer, recibían toda clase de beneficios, completamente inauditos e imposibles para el resto de prisioneres (comida abundante, ropa limpia, camas individuales en barracones apartados del resto de prisioneres en otra zona menos expuesta a las epidemias y a la violencia arbitraria de los guardias borrachos, e incluso la vista gorda de algunos nazis con respecto de algunas actividades ilegales que para otres prisioneres que no contaban con ese favor significaban la muerte inmediata). Con todo, el precio a pagar era extremadamente alto, y fueron muchos los miembros del Sonderkommando que se suicidaron lanzándose contra las alambradas electrificadas, o simplemente, provocando su asesinato a manos de un guardia por atacarlo o por simplemente negarse a seguir haciendo el trabajo sucio de las SS. Además, los beneficios de los que disfrutaban no eran sino una cruel distracción. Los nazis no pensaban permitir que ninguna persona judía saliese con vida de allí, y menos aún si esa persona había estado dentro de la cámara de gas y de los hornos crematorios, pudiendo dar testimonio de todo cuanto allí había acontecido. Por eso, cada 3-4 meses (como máximo, a veces antes), los nazis hacían formar al Sonderkommando, les aseguraban que serían trasladados a otro campo con mejores condiciones, como un indulto por su colaboración, pero los camiones llegaban a los bosques alrededor del río Vístula, donde eran asesinados a tiros. Después, los nazis convencían a otro grupo de prisioneros para ocupar su lugar. Esther Wajsblum (1924-1945)En Birkenau, el Sonderkommando nº 12, compuesto íntegramente de judíos deportados desde Hungría, sabían que se acercaba su turno de ser “trasladados”, y se impacientaban. Sin embargo, el momento de la verdad no acababa de llegar. Cada vez que las condiciones parecían las idóneas, ocurría algo que hacía que el grupo central de la resistencia retrasase la revuelta. El tiempo pasaba, la situación era cada vez más desesperada y el número de muertes continuaba aumentando. Los prisioneros del Sonderkommando sabían que su ejecución era inminente y que no podían esperar más. El 7 de octubre de 1944, durante un cambio de turno, el Sonderkommando se rebeló por su propia cuenta. Algunas ametralladoras y pistolas que grupos de partisanes habían dejado cerca de la alambrada o escondidas en zonas de trabajo esclavo donde luego podían recogerlas otres miembros de la resistencia preses en el campo, y los explosivos caseros que habían preparado con la pólvora robada por las mujeres, fueron sus únicas equipaciones. Lograrían hacer saltar por los aires uno de los edificios de los crematorios (en concreto el nº 4) dejándolo inutilizado para siempre, y matar a una buena cantidad de SS, además de protagonizar un audaz intento de fuga, tristemente infructuoso pues la mayoría cayó bajo un diluvio de balas de las torres de vigilancia, y los que sobrevivieron fueron posteriormente recapturados, torturados y finalmente fusilados o ahorcados.Los mandos nazis del campo, no obstante, habían quedado totalmente atónitos y sobresaltados. La chispa de resistencia y revuelta que ya había prendido en los guetos judíos de Varsovia o Cracovia (y de otros puntos de la Polonia ocupada), saltaba ahora en Birkenau creando un precedente peligroso. Nadie esperaba que aquellas personas aterrorizadas pudiesen reunir las fuerzas y la esperanza que necesitaban para sublevarse. Además, Auschwitz no sería el único campo donde se llevaría a cabo un alzamiento. El campo de concentración de Sobibor, también en Polonia, había sido el escenario, un año antes, el 14 de octubre de 1943, de otra revuelta, en la cual además de conseguir ajusticiar a los cabecillas verdugos, se llevó a cabo una gran fuga en la que se salvaron montones de personas. Los nazis, por fin, tenían miedo, y su venganza no se hizo de rogar. Sabían que, indefectiblemente, la pólvora provenía de la fábrica de municiones, y por eso llevarían a cabo toda clase de torturas e interrogatorios con mujeres presas que allí trabajaban, con la intención de sonsacarles la información sobre quiénes habían robado ese material. Después de semanas de palizas y brutales maltratos físicos y psicológicos, detuvieron a Ester Wajsblum, Ala Gertner y Regina Safirsztain, así como también a Roza Robota. Esto llevó a las mujeres a tener sospechas de que las SS habían conseguido que alguna de las trabajadoras esclavas de la fábrica hablara, ya que Roza no trabajaba allí, y su única relación con el contrabando de pólvora se desarrollaba a través de la red de resistencia, que no todo el mundo conocía. Las cuatro fueron torturadas salvajemente en el infame Bloque 11, un barracón destinado especialmente al castigo, mucho más temido que las balas en la nuca o que la cámara de gas. Roza, en concreto, acabaría con la mayor parte de los huesos del cuerpo hechos pedazos, convertida en un amasijo de carne inflamada, esperando el golpe de gracia.Noah Zabludowicz, el primer contacto de Roza en la resistencia de Auschwitz y que había sido vecino suyo en Ciechánow, convenció a Jacob, el kapo (prisioneres metides en Auschwitz por delitos comunes pero que no eran de familia judía, y que eran designades por los nazis para hacer tareas de carceleros) en el Bloque 11, para que le diese permiso para pasar a ver a Roza. Jacob aceptó el soborno y emborrachó a la guardia nazi, permitiendo que Noah pudiera colarse con una excusa. Noah sobreviviría a Auschwitz y después de la liberación, describiría de la siguiente manera su reencuentro con Roza Robota:“Tuve el privilegio de ser el último en ver a Roza pocos días antes de que fuese ejecutada. Por la noche […] entré en el búnker del Bloque 11 y vi las celdas y los pasillos oscuros. Oí los lamentos de los condenados y me estremecí hasta lo más profundizo de mi ser. Jacob me condujo a la celda de Roza […] Cuando mis ojos se acostumbraron a la oscuridad, pude distinguir una figura envuelta en harapos, estirada sobre el suelo de cemento. Volvió su cabeza hacia mí. Apenas pude reconocerla. Me describió los sádicos métodos empleados por los alemanes durante los interrogatorios. No había ser humano que pudiera resistir eso. Me dijo que ella había asumido toda la culpa y que nadie más estaba en peligro. No había delatado a nadie. Intenté consolarla, pero no escuchó. Sólo pidió que el resto de compañeros siguieran con el trabajo. Resulta más fácil morir, dijo, cuando se sabe que los otros continuarán en la brecha.” (2)Noah también afirmaría que Roza respondió a sus intentos de tranquilizarla con una frase firme: “Tranquilo, sé lo que hice y sé lo que me espera.”El 6 de enero de 1945, menos de un mes antes de que el ejército soviético liberara por fin el campo de Auschwitz, las cuatro mujeres, Roza Robota, Hala Gertner, Ester Wajsblum y Regina Safirsztain, fueron ahorcadas delante del resto de prisioneras. Hana, hermana pequeña de Ester, describiría así la ejecución de su hermana:“Dieron la orden de ‘¡A formar!’. Pero aun eran las cinco de la madrugada […] De pronto, mis ojos contemplaron el terreno entre los Bloques 4 y 5. ¿A qué se debía este llamamiento? […] Mientras permanecía de pie, medio dormida, la vi de pronto [a mi hermana]. […] Inmediatamente después escuchamos la orden: “¡Trabajadoras de la Unión para adelante!”, “’¡Sección de Pólvora, un paso al frente!”. […] Levanté la cabeza; a poca distancia pude distinguir el patíbulo. Comprendí lo que iba a pasar. […] El silencio reinaba en la plaza. Escuchaba la respiración acelerada, los suspiros y las lágrimas contenidas. Se pusieron en marcha. Las cabezas alzadas, los ojos mirando hacia delante, bien lejos, hacia libertad. La libertad perdida. El tableteo de las sillas al ser plegadas y retiradas. Murieron.” (3)Según otras testigos, instantes antes de caer la silla y morir en la soga, Roza se despediría gritando: “¡Venganza! ¡No tengáis miedo!”.Sin duda, esta historia representa un valiosísimo ejemplo del valor, entereza y dignidad que hacen falta para resistir incluso en las condiciones más adversas que podamos imaginar. Un grupo de mujeres, varias de las cuales apenas superaban las dos décadas de edad pero que hicieron frente a su atroz miedo y decidieron dar un paso adelante en la lucha por sus vidas, dejando un legado inolvidable. Mujeres que abandonaron el rol patriarcal de víctimas pasivas que los nazis esperaban de ellas, y decidieron defenderse a sí mismas y a las demás.Hoy en día, durante la visita guiada a los restos de los campos de Auschwitz y de Birkenau, se pueden observar los cimientos del crematorio número 4 que hizo volar la revuelta de octubre de 1944. Faun Fables- Family Album (2004)

No tengo mucho tiempo para reseñar así que salen unas palabritas al paso: Family Album es el tercer álbum (el segundo oficial) de Faun Fables, la banda californiana fundada por la gran compositora Dawn McCarthy que explora a su manera las raíces del folk con una gran cuota de experimentación y muchísimos pasajes de una sutileza tanto en las melodías como en la poderosa voz de McCarthy que roza lo imposible. Un trabajo conceptual que conmueve, fascina y pone la piel de gallina. Excelente disco. Eso. Chau.
