Two years ago, the Cardinals inked their quarterback of the future. At least, they hoped they were getting their quarterback of the future when they signed No. 10 overall pick Josh Rosen. [RELATED: No. 1 Pick Joe Burrow On His Contract] The Cardinals’ quarterback search was an open secret, one that dragged for years. In 2017, they tried and failed to trade up for Patrick Mahomes – who went No. 10 overall to the Chiefs – leading them to settle for Haason Reddick at No. 13. This time around, they didn’t want to walk out of the 2018 draft with “what-ifs,” so they traded up from No. 15 to the No. 10 pick for Rosen, a promising young passer out of UCLA. . Most evaluators viewed Rosen as the most polished and most NFL-ready passer in the entire class. There was a lot to like, especially after Rosen threw for 59 touchdowns over the course of three college seasons and saved his best for last. As a junior, Rosen turned in the best TD/INT ratio of his career (26/10) and his best completion rate (62.5%). Rosen’s talent was apparent – he didn’t have a cannon for an arm, but his technique and footwork were virtually flawless. He was also an all around bright kid, though some evaluators wondered if he was too brainy for his own good. Curiously, his own head coach was among the nay-sayers. “Because of fit, I would take Sam Darnold if I were the Cleveland Browns,” saidJim Mora, advocating for another QB over his own pupil.“I think that blue collar, gritty attitude, I think his teammates will love him, I think the city will love him. He’ll say the right things. He will come in and he will represent well. I think he kind of represents what Cleveland is. And if I was one of the New York teams, I would take Josh *snap* just like that. I think they will both be great in the pros.” Later on, Mora backtracked, but only slightly. “He needs to be challenged intellectually so he doesn’t get bored,” Mora said a few weeks before the draft. “He’s a millennial. He wants to know why. Millennials, once they know why, they’re good. Josh has a lot of interests in life. If you can hold his concentration level and focus only on football for a few years, he will set the world on fire. He has so much ability, and he’s a really good kid.” Ultimately, the Browns chose the brash confidence of Baker Mayfield over the “gritty attitude” of Sam Darnold. So far, both QBs have greatly outperformed Rosen at the pro level (though, nothing like the No. 32 overall pick, Lamar Jackson). Rosen went 3-10 as the Cardinals’ starter as a rookie, completing just 55.2% of his throws with 11 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. A deeper look at Rosen’s rookie stats and metrics don’t do him any favors, either. Rosen completed 55% of his throws and averaged just 5.8 yards per attempt. He also finished with a league-worst 26.1 Total QBR and Football Outsiders listed him as the league’s worst full-time quarterback. Midway through the year, offensive coordinatorMike McCoy got the heave-ho. After the season, head coach Steve Wilkswas sent packing. Ditto for Rosen – just one year after the Cardinals selected him, they drafted his replacement inKyler Murray. All three men would probably point to the Cardinals’ abysmal offensive line as a major factor, but that didn’t save any of their jobs. Rosen hoped for a fresh start after he was traded to the Dolphins, but he floundered in his three starts and finished the year with one touchdown vs. five picks. Now, with Tua Tagovailoa and Ryan Fitzpatrick firmly entrenched on the roster, Rosen is once again in NFL limbo. Rosen’s Florida Journey
With Kyler Murray’s arrival in Arizona providing the easy headlines in the recent NFL draft the man he replaced moved on quietly and respectfully. Josh Rosen will now be tasked with another one year audition, this time in South Florida as a new member of the Miami Dolphins.
Not withstanding the Dolphins salary-cap-friendly signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick, new coach Brian Flores is fully aware that Rosen has to prove his qualities to him this season. With one eye on the quarterback riches of the 2020 draft Rosen faces the reality of yet again being the odd man out if he doesn’t put up serious production in Miami. If the pressure is loaded on Rosen’s shoulders, it is less so for the Dolphins who can look to re-do the position a year on whilst not absorbing a huge cap hit on Rosen with his $2 million a year salary.
Giving up only a late second round draft pick similarly proved to be a low cost deal in order to acquire the QB who went at pick number ten over all only a year earlier. You would have to believe Rosen feels a huge sense of relief to escape Arizona with several starts already under his belt to guide him into his new offence.
The major question that hung over Rosen when he entered the NFL was over his maturity. The Dolphins would appear to have had these questions answered for them. Rosen handled both a difficult playing season and this challenging off season extremely well, hanging in behind a porous offensive line and leading the NFL’s worst team with a lot of dignity. Murray’s long expected arrival also saw Rosen say all the right things as he moved on to Miami.
Whilst the Dolphins are a team in full re-build mode he would appear to be a good fit, particularly as the new offence he will run borrows heavily from the set up in New England. Expectations to make a play-off run will almost undoubtedly be off the table in Miami which should allow Rosen to develop his game organically.
Perhaps his biggest task will be to beat out savvy veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. A total of eight teams appear of the QB’s CV, who has always been regarded as a streaky player who’s magic can appear from nowhere and evaporate just as quickly. That said, Fitzpatrick will be well versed on the Dolphin’s play-book and be ready to do battle for the team’s starting job come training camp. Should Rosen be handed the keys to the offence at least in Fitzpatrick they will have an experienced back-up who can provide a spark and occasional magic from the bench. First year coach Brian Flores’ successful apprenticeship with the Patriots should provide a shrewd coach who will take a long view in terms of the team he is tasked with rebuilding. His first draft in Miami also showed a willingness to build from the bottom up, adding high impact defensive tackle, Christian Wilkins, from Clemson. Also picks in round three and six used on offensive linemen which showed his dedication to keeping both the Miami QB’s upright this coming season.
Should Rosen prove his worth in 2019 then Flores will have a low priced quarterback of the future with his next draft aimed at continuing a nuts and bolts rebuild. Whilst Miami likely won’t stack up enough wins to break even, the new QB in town has at least landed an audition he’s capable of passing and could well stick around for a while.

DRAFT * Arkansas LB Dre Greenlaw will visit with the Texans, Seahawks, 49ers, Cowboys and others. (Aaron Wilson) * Washington S Taylor Rapp met with the Cardinals, Buccaneers, Saints, Raiders, Patriots and Steelers before his pro day. Rapp also has visits set up with the Cowboys, Lions, Rams, Giants and Panthers. (Tony Pauline) * Pauline says Washington DT Greg Gaines has caught the eyes of the Seahawks. * Washington OT Kaleb McGary met with the Bills, Saints, Seahawks and Packers before his pro day. McGary’s visit list includes the Patriots, Rams and Jaguars. The Falcons will fly out to work out McGary as well. * Boston College OL Chris Lindstrom has a workout scheduled with the Titans Friday and the Falcons next week. He’ll also visit the Broncos, Eagles and Redskins. (Darren Wolfson) CARDINALS * The Athletic’s Jay Glazer expects the Cardinals to ask for a first-round pick in return for QB Josh Rosen because of his draft pedigree and low-cost contract. * Glazer adds teams were all over the board on Rosen last year, which could make it harder for the Cardinals to find what they’re looking for. SEAHAWKS Seahawks GM John Schneider explained that their approach to free agency this year has been influenced by the potential to add four compensatory picks in 2020. “I think just being able to kind of be a little bit more selective in terms of how we’re approaching free agency,” Schneider said via Tony Drovetto of the team’s official website. “Last year, we had some significant losses with Kam’s (Chancellor) injury and Cliff’s (Avril) injury and losing Luke (Willson) and Jimmy Graham leaving and Paul Richardson leaving. So I think we were a little bit more aggressive with the unrestricted guys. This year, we’re trying to be a little bit more selective with the cap casualty guys that don’t count toward your compensatory picks. Right now we’re looking at 11 picks in 2020, but we have four right now and I just spent the weekend looking at our board like, ‘that’s not cool.'” * ESPN’s Brady Henderson writes the Seahawks now have to consider drafting a wide receiver as insurance for WR Doug Baldwin if he can’t recover from his third surgery this offseason. * The free agent market is thin at wide receiver, with former Seahawk WR Jermaine Kearse the most logical fit. Other options include Pierre Garcon, Michael Crabtree and Terrance Williams.
