Which NFL teams can clinch a playoff spot in Week 16?
Tumblr media
Playoff berths are still on the line this week, but now teams can begin clinching first-round byes and homefield advantage too.
We’ve got two weeks of football remaining before the postseason, and there is still a lot that is undecided. Several playoff bids can be won or lost in Week 16, while some teams can begin clinching first-round byes and homefield advantage.
Last week, the 49ers, Seahawks, Packers, Patriots, and Bills all joined the playoff party. This week, there are three more spots that can be sewn up, as well as a couple of division titles. The action all starts with a triple-header on Saturday.
That includes one of three rivalry games that could determine a divisional winner. The Bills and Patriots will face off Saturday afternoon, with potentially the AFC East title on the line. The Eagles and Cowboys will battle for NFC East supremacy Sunday, and the NFC North contest between the Vikings and Packers follows on Monday Night Football.
On top of that, the few teams that are clinging to what little playoffs hopes they have could finally find themselves eliminated this week.
Let’s run through the (tie-free) scenarios for Week 16.
The Texans can repeat as AFC South champs, or at least nab a playoff spot, with:
Houston entered the season as the favorite in the AFC South, but things got a little interesting in the back half of the year with the re-emergence of the Titans under ... Ryan Tannehill? The Texans were looking at two games against the Titans in the final three weeks and fortunately for them, they beat Tennessee last week.
That means the Texans can secure the division this week in a couple ways, and they can also officially punch their ticket to the playoffs with a completely different scenario.
The Texans can win the AFC South for the second year in a row with:
A win over the Buccaneers OR
A Titans loss to the Saints
If all else fails, they can get a playoff berth with:
A Steelers loss to the Jets
The Patriots can keep the AFC East crown and perhaps land a first-round bye with:
The Patriots can clinch two different things this week. The first is the AFC East, which is still up for grabs with the Josh Allen-led Bills playing well down the stretch. The Patriots beat the Bills once this season, but they have hit some turbulence in December. New England is just 1-2 this month, with its one win coming over the Bengals in Week 15. It took until then for the Patriots to even guarantee themselves a spot in the postseason.
But before we ponder the Patriots’ demise, let’s remember they can win the AFC East for a record 11th straight time. They can also snag a top-two seed, which would give them a first-round bye.
The Patriots can win the AFC East for the 16th time in the last 17 seasons with:
A win over the Bills
The Patriots can also end up with a first-round bye for the 10th straight season with:
A win over the Bills and a Chiefs loss to the Bears
The Ravens can earn a first-round bye or homefield advantage with:
This week, two different things can happen with the Ravens, who have already won the AFC North. They can lock down homefield advantage or at least a first-round bye.
Baltimore is the team to beat right now. The Ravens own 10 consecutive wins, including over playoff teams like the Patriots, 49ers, and Bills. The team they’re playing Sunday is the last team that beat them this year: the Browns, who got a 40-25 win in Baltimore in September. At this point, that seems like an aberration more than anything.
Here are the three ways the Ravens can secure a first-round bye:
A win over the Browns OR
A Patriots loss to the Bills OR
A Chiefs loss to the Bears
The Ravens can also capture that No. 1 seed with:
A win over the Browns OR
Losses by the Patriots and Chiefs
The Cowboys can claim the rather sad NFC East with:
No matter what, the NFC East will host a playoff game in the Wild Card Round, and the Cowboys can be that team if they win this week. They’re set to play the Eagles, their only competition for the division. Whoever finishes in second place in the division won’t have a chance for a wild card bid, either. That’s because the NFC East has been a mess this season.
Still, once you make it to the playoffs, anything can happen.
The Cowboys will host a playoff game if they get:
A win against the rival Eagles, who would be eliminated from the playoffs as well
The Packers can deny the Vikings the NFC North by:
The Packers and Vikings can both make the playoffs, but they’re also fighting for the NFC North. The Packers can wrap up the division in Week 16, while the Vikings would need a win, and some help next week, to take the crown.
Green Bay will win the NFC North on Monday Night Football if they get:
A win over, who else, the Vikings
Speaking of the Vikings, they’re playoff bound if they get:
Minnesota can still win the division, but not until Week 17. At the very least, the Vikings can clinch a spot in the playoffs one of two ways this week. One of the scenarios can happen on Saturday when the Rams meet the 49ers, so the Vikings could already be in by the time they play on Monday evening.
Here’s what the Vikings needs to assure themselves a playoff berth:
A win over the Packers OR
A Rams loss to the 49ers
Yeah, but who can be eliminated in Week 16?
Four more teams are on the chopping block this week. The list of teams that can be eliminated include at least one surprise team based on preseason predictions (the Rams), though one could argue that the Eagles (and the NFC East in general) are also well below where we expected them at the beginning of this season.
Without further ado, here are the tie-free elimination scenarios for Week 16 (once again with a hat tip to NFL Playoff Scenarios on Reddit).
Sean McVay’s Rams will go back to the drawing board with:
A loss to the 49ers OR
A Vikings win over the Packers
The Eagles can sever the bonds of false hope with:
A loss to the Cowboys
The shaky bolt holding the Browns bandwagon together will finally fly loose with:
A loss to the Ravens OR
A Steelers win over the Jets OR
A Titans win over the Saints OR
A Colts loss to the Panthers
Jon Gruden’s Raiders are done in Oakland, and they can wave bye to the playoffs with:
A Raiders loss to the Chargers OR
A Steelers win over the Jets OR
A Titans win over the Saints OR
A Colts loss to the Panthers
If the playoffs started today, which teams would be in?
Some seeds can be locked up this week, but a few will still be up for grabs in Week 17. This is how things would look if the playoffs got underway now:
The NFC:
Seattle Seahawks (11-3)*
Green Bay Packers (11-3)*
New Orleans Saints (11-3)**
Dallas Cowboys (7-7)
San Francisco 49ers (11-3)*
Minnesota Vikings (10-4)
The AFC:
Baltimore Ravens (12-2)**
New England Patriots (11-3)*
Kansas City Chiefs (10-4)**
Houston Texans (9-5)
Buffalo Bills (10-4)*
Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6)
*clinched a playoff spot **clinched division

Netherlands vs. Northern Ireland – Football Match Report – October 10, 2019
Tumblr media
Memphis Depay scored twice and Luuk de Jong was also on target as the Netherlands came back from a goal down with 10 minutes left to beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in their Euro 2020 qualifier in Rotterdam on Thursday.
It was a fortunate escape for the home side who fell behind when Josh Magennis gave Northern Ireland the lead in the 75th minute after a stout defensive performance had frustrated the hosts.
Yet the Dutch responded with an equaliser from Depay in the 80th minute and then two stoppage-time goals that put them in a three-way tie at the top of Group C.
– Euro 2020: Who will reach the finals?
– Euro 2020 qualifying: All you need to know
Netherlands, Germany and Northern Ireland all have 12 points, although the Irish have played a game more.
Substitute Magennis rose high to head home Stuart Dallas‘s cross as the Dutch paid the price for sloppy defending.
Daley Blind miscued two attempted clearances and was then beaten by Dallas, whose cross was expertly met by Magennis as he rose above Matthijs de Ligt to score.
Depay toe-poked home the equaliser from a square ball by Donyell Malen that eluded the Northern Irish defence, as the visitors’ lead lasted just five minutes.
Then, as the game went into stoppage time, substitute De Jong needed two chances before finishing at the back post before Depay made sure of a vital three points with another goal after being set up by Frenkie de Jong.
“How we reacted was great,” said Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk.
“We were patient, we kept looking for goals and we got our reward for our second-half performance where we put on the pressure.
“In the end it was a deserved win with an outstanding reaction,” he told NOS.
Yet it was a frustrating night for the Dutch, who did not manage an effort on the visitors’ goal until just before the half-hour mark when Steven Bergwijn‘s shot was blocked.
It took 44 minutes before Northern Ireland goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell actually had to make an intervention, easily collecting the ball as Georginio Wijnaldum‘s attempted header looped up into the air.
The Dutch ratcheted up the pressure in the second half when Donny van de Beek came on, with centre back Jonny Evans clearing his lines in the 71st minute as Wijnaldum looked to steer the ball home from a difficult angle.
Yet then Magennis silenced the home fans before the Dutch picked themselves up for a grand finale.
Earlier on Thursday, bottom team Estonia picked up their first point with a goalless draw away in Minsk against Belarus.
The pair are already out of contention in the group with Belarus second from bottom on four points after six games.

Euro 2020 qualifier - Matthew Kennedy named in Northern Ireland squad in the Netherlands
Scotland Under 21 international Matthew Kennedy has been included in the Northern Ireland squad for next week's Euro Cup 2020 qualifier in the Netherlands. Michael O'Neill's men will then take on the Czech Republic in a friendly.
It is more likely for the St Johnstone winger to earn a debut following his international switch to the country of his birth. He trained with the Northern Ireland squad last month. Football fans can book Northern Ireland Euro Cup Tickets on our website on exclusively discounted prices.
Tumblr media
His international clearance wasn't through in time for the friendly win over Luxembourg. Jamal Lewis has been included in what is a boost following the elbow injury he sustained in Norwich's defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Also in are on-fire Linfield forward Shayne Lavery, Motherwell midfielder Liam Donnelly, and Cardiff defender Ciaron Brown. They made an unexpected start against Luxembourg despite only being called into the U21 squad for the first time days before.
Lavery is one of 4 strikers named, joining Kyle Lafferty, Josh Magennis, and Liam Boyce. Returning to the squad is Hearts full-back Michael Smith, who missed out on last month’s games against Luxembourg and Germany due to injury.
Tumblr media
However, the news isn't as good for Jordan Jones, who will also miss November's qualifying double-header against the Netherlands and Germany after undergoing during on a medial ligament injury. Northern Ireland sits in 2nd place in Group C.
Northern Ireland is level on 12 points with leaders Germany after losing 2-0 to them in Belfast last month. That was the first setback for O'Neill's men in the group after they won their first four fixtures, but they still face a very difficult path to qualification.
They really need to pick up points against the Dutch home and away after Holland's victory over Germany last month. We have to find a way to get four points, whether that's a draw away from home to set up a massive game for ourselves in Belfast or try to win the game in Rotterdam.
Tumblr media
"Germany losing to the Netherlands was probably not the result we wanted, it sways the head-to-head in favor of the Netherlands in terms of our two games against them," O'Neill said.
"Those are the challenges we face."
Northern Ireland squad to play the Netherlands and the Czech Republic:
Goalkeepers are Michael McGovern, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, and Trevor Carson. Defenders are Jonny Evans, Craig Cathcart, Conor Mclaughlin, Jamal Lewis, Michael Smith, Tom Flanagan, and Ciaron Brown.
Players included in the list of midfielders are Steven Davis, Niall McGinn, Corry Evans, Stuart Dallas, Shane Ferguson, Paddy McNair, George Saville, Gavin Whyte, Jordan Thompson, Liam Donnelly, Matthew Kennedy. Forwards are Kyle Lafferty, Liam Boyce, Josh Magennis, Shayne Lavery.
Football fans can get Euro Cup Tickets through our trusted online ticketing market place. EuroTickets2020.com is the most reliable source to book Euro Cup 2020 tickets.

Lafferty back in Northern Ireland squad after apology
Kyle Lafferty is back in the Northern Ireland squad to face the Republic of Ireland and Austria after apologising for “an error of judgement”.
Lafferty, 31, withdrew from the panel for the Nations League double-header against Austria and Bosnia-Herzegovina last month, citing an Achilles injury.
He informed NI boss Michael O’Neill at midnight the day before the squad met.
The Irish FA subsequently invoked Fifa’s five-day rule[1] which prevented the forward playing the next weekend.
The Rangers striker’s participation in the games may be in doubt however as has been ruled out of his club’s Europa League game against Spartak Moscow on Thursday night with a quad muscle problem.
“I spoke to Kyle on the phone and in person in Glasgow. I also spoke to Steven Gerrard (Rangers manager),” said O’Neill at the announcement of a 28-man squad.
“It’s good to have him back in. He has an injury just concern, so his availability is contingent on how he comes through the weekend.”
Prior to last month’s away fixtures, the manager explained Lafferty had “ruled himself out of the two games”, adding that the matter would be dealt with on his return.
The IFA’s intervention saw him ruled out of facing Hamilton Academical in Rangers’ next game.
Lafferty’s two-year NI goal drought
Lafferty has scored 20 international goals although he hasn’t netted for his country since the 4-0 World Cup qualifier win over Azerbaijan at Windsor Park in November 2016.
Northern Ireland have not lost any of the 17 international games in which Lafferty has scored.
Northern Ireland face the Republic of Ireland in a friendly on 15 November in Dublin before finishing their Nations League campaign with a match against Austria in Belfast on 18 November.
Martin O’Neill’s Republic side overtook Northern Ireland[2] in the most recent Fifa rankings.
Aberdeen winger Niall McGinn returns after missing the last two games through injury, while Charlton forward Jamie Ward is back in the panel, alongside Rangers defender Gareth McAuley – both players having sat out the trips to Vienna and Sarajevo to work on their fitness with their new clubs.
<!–
Celtic goalkeeper Conor Hazard, QPR winger Paul Smyth and Blackpool midfielder Jordan Thompson are called up from the Under-21 squad, all having previously featured in senior international friendlies.
Smyth marked his debut by scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 friendly win over South Korea[3] at Windsor Park in March.
Rotherham’s Kyle Vassell retains his place in the group but Will Grigg is out injured and Sheffield United frontman Conor Washington is again omitted.
“Conor Washington has had limited game time at his club, so I went for Kyle Vassell and Paul Smyth. Conor needs more game time at Sheffield United but is available if required,” said O’Neill.
Oliver Norwood is not included as he is suspended for the final Nations League encounter with the Austrians.
Nations League relegation likely
Consecutive away defeats in October have left Northern Ireland bottom of their Nations League group with relegation to the third tier of the new competition becoming increasingly likely.
Perhaps more worrying to Michael O’Neill is the fact that his side are without a win in seven competitive matches, drawing one and losing six of those games, and scoring just two goals.
The 2-0 defeat to Bosnia[4] in mid-October meant NI have failed to score in nine of their past 11 away games, including the last six in a row.
O’Neill’s charges have won just two of their last 11 fixtures.
A point against Austria in their 15 November meeting in Vienna would ensure that the Bosnians win the group, with NI facing the Austrians in their final game in the competition three days later.
Northern Ireland squad: Goalkeepers: Michael McGovern (Norwich City), Trevor Carson (Motherwell), Bailey Peacock-Farrell (Leeds United), Conor Hazard (Celtic).
Defenders: Aaron Hughes (Hearts), Gareth McAuley (Glasgow Rangers), Jonathan Evans (Leicester City), Craig Cathcart (Watford), Conor McLaughlin (Millwall), Patrick McNair (Middlesbrough), Jamal Lewis (Norwich City), Michael Smith (Hearts), Tom Flanagan (Sunderland).
Midfielders: Steven Davis (Southampton), Niall McGinn (Aberdeen), Corry Evans (Blackburn Rovers), Shane Ferguson (Millwall), Stuart Dallas (Leeds United), George Saville (Middlesbrough, loan), Jordan Jones (Kilmarnock), Gavin Whyte (Oxford United), Jordan Thompson (Blackpool).
Forwards: Kyle Lafferty (Rangers), Josh Magennis (Bolton Wanderers), Jamie Ward (Charlton Athletic, loan), Liam Boyce (Burton Albion), Paul Smyth (Queens Park Rangers), Kyle Vassell (Rotherham United).
