World Art Day
World Art Day is celebrated every year on April 15. All around the world, people have their definitions for what they consider to be art. Different cultures have different tastes and styles. This holiday is used as an opportunity to promote the development of art. It encourages people to take the time to notice the beautiful things around them. With our busy schedules, people don’t always have the time to go to art galleries. A yearly reminder about beauty helps people relax and just enjoy experiencing the world. It shares knowledge, sparks curiosity, and leads to very interesting conversations.
History of World Art Day
World Art Day was declared on April 15 at the General Assembly of the International Association of Art. The first celebration was in 2012. The date was chosen to honor the birthday of the famous Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci represents tolerance, world peace, freedom of expression, and multiculturalism. The first world art day was supported by all the International Association of Art (I.A.A.) national committees. There were 150 artists from countries all over the world to ensure inclusion. There were conferences and special museum hours. Outdoor art exhibitions were held to display paintings, prints, sculptures, videos, and more.
Art comes in different forms and categories. Art can be architecture, music, painting, sculpting, dance, or literature. Cinema is also considered art. It is a way for people to express themselves through creativity. True art is simply an expression of emotion. It represents the artist’s view of the world and how they feel about it. Art communicates how similar we can be and also how different. People get their meanings of art when they experience it. Their perceptions are usually based on their personal experiences in life.
World Art Day is a great reminder to help people notice the beauty around them. It reminds people to express themselves fully. We are all full of emotions and should be allowed to show them without fear. The goal is to facilitate the sustainable development of art. With enough support, artists can continue to portray beauty.

Willie Cole, “American Domestic”, 2016, Digital Print
(Tom Laidman, “Broadway”, 1993 and “Bois Ma Petite”, 1999, Lithograph on paper)
Currently on view at Akron Museum of Art is RETOLD: African American Art and Folklore, a collection of art from the Wesley and Missy Cochran collection, organized into themes exploring aspects of African American history and culture. The show features many well known and lesser known artists including Amiri Baraka, Beverly Buchanan, Willie Cole, Trenton Doyle Hancock, William Pope.L., Tom Laidman, Jacob Lawrence, Alison Saar and more.
From the museum about the exhibition-
African folklore has been around as long as humankind, and the African diaspora in America has added new dimensions to its rich history. African American folk stories teach about culture, the mysteries of life, and the survival of a race of people bought and sold who continue to thrive in an unjust society.
“RETOLD: African American Art and Folklore” focuses on four themes: Remembering, Religion, Racialization, and Resistance. These themes provide a comprehensive retelling of the works featured in the exhibition. In many of the pieces, the artist’s muse connects closely with stories that have been told generation after generation. Folklore texts are featured throughout the space as a means to retell a richer, deeper story of African American culture.
There are more than forty artists represented in this exhibition, all holding one similar truth: their story of joy and struggle in the African American experience.
In addition to the artwork, there is also an educational video produced by Josh Toussaint-Strauss of The Guardian that explores the misconceptions about Haitian Voudou that is worth a watch.

Maestro
Remember the old Hollywood composer biographies. They had terrible, usually fraudulent scripts, but they also had rafts of guest stars showcasing the subjects’ works. Sure, you had to slog through some terrible writing, but you were rewarded by hearing Judy Garland sing or watching Gene Kelly or Ann Miller dance or catching some hot jazz from Lena Horne or Hazel Scott. The only attempt to do anything like that recently was DELOVELY (2004), which had some good musical guests (and a few clinkers; if you did to Sheryl Crow what she did to Cole Porter you’d be on death row). When Nick Blaemire and Mallory Portnow, as Adolph Green and Betty Comden, gave out with a spirited rendition of “Carried Away” from ON THE TOWN in Bradley Cooper’s MAESTRO (2023, Netflix), I kept wishing he’d made the film in that mold. Cooper is a good director, but his script, written with Josh Singer, does him a terrible disservice. It lurches through history and somehow leaves out a lot of the character motivations, while occasionally stooping to rank cliches. When Cooper’s Bernstein and his wife, Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre, fight, she says his conducting comes out of hate, not love. After they’ve become estranged, she attends his performance of Mahler’s 2nd and says, “There is no hate…there is no hate in your heart.” Why? What’s changed? Is it because he’s had a few years of good loving from his assistant (Gideon Glick, who sadly comes across as just a boytoy instead of the accomplished musician Tommy Cochran was)? Or is she lying so he’ll go with her when she undergoes cancer testing? Who knows? The writing would be a lot easier to forgive, and they might have to cut some of the repetition, if they’d throw in some good numbers. Imagine Annaleigh Ashford belting out “Swing” from WONDERFUL TOWN or Isaac Powell singing “Something’s Coming” from WEST SIDE STORY or June Gable doing “I Am Easily Assimilated” from CANDIDE instead of just appearing as an in joke to ask how to pronounce Spanish she had delivered expertly in the show’s 1974 revival.
What’s harder to forgive is the way the film seems to demonize Bernstein’s sexuality. He jumps from lover Matt Bomer’s bed to courting Mulligan in what feels like a heartbeat and then heartlessly introduces the two as if they should be happy to share him. And treating Glick’s character as just his boyfriend reduces a relationship founded in respect and artistic creation to lust. I get the point that Bernstein was a hedonist who gave in to all of his appetites (Cooper rarely has a cigarette out of his mouth), but the film focuses so much on how he does his wife dirt, it probably should have been called VICTIM.
Anyway, Cooper makes some strong directorial choices when the script isn’t getting in the way. At the start, Bernstein learns he’s to conduct the New York Philharmonic for the first time — the concert that made his name — and runs jubilantly from his bedroom into the auditorium as the score to ON THE WATERFRONT plays. At the premiere of MASS, the camera pans over Bernstein’s box, with Glick, Cooper and Mulligan capturing their different reactions to the music and their personal romantic triangle. Mulligan is incandescent as Monteleagre. She lives the role so completely you may not notice how underwritten it is. Cooper tries, but in contrast, he seems just to be a voice and makeup job. He never disappears into the character. The only supporting cast members who gets any chance to register are Bomer and Sarah Silverman as Bernstein’s sister. For the rest, the film is dismally underpopulated despite having actors playing major figures in Bernstein’s life and American arts.

SEEN YESTERDAY ON FREE HAWAI`I TV
KHON2.com - Gov. Josh Green announced that he backed down from a moratorium on short-term rentals in Maui County on Wednesday, March 27. Community organizers are now focused on legislation that would give power to the counties to phase out high-priced vacation homes. Members of the Lahaina Strong community group gathered at the Hawaii State Capitol on Thursday, March 28 and said they understand a moratorium is no longer needed since displaced families have started to trickle into more permanent housing. “We still need to tackle this short-term rental issue,” Lahaina Strong organizer Paele Kiakona said. “Because the short term rental industry has exacerbated the housing market and made it way too expensive for anybody to even afford a family home here in Hawaii.” Organizers are now highlighting legislation — HB1838 and SB2919 — that would give counties the power to gradually phase out short-term rentals. “Giving counties the clear authority to phase out vacation rental uses is a key tool for helping Maui residents find adequate rental housing in the wake of the wildfires,” Lahaina Strong organizer Katie Austin said. Rep. Elle Cochran added cutting through the red tape to find long-term housing is simply too much for some residents who are still displaced. Organizers said 60% of Native Hawaiians in West Maui who were affected by the fire have left the island. “Every time they get a different case manager, they have to re-tell their story,” Rep. Cochran said, “they have to get this paper, get it signed, go back, I mean, it’s just been nonstop. We’re almost nine months in and we still haven’t built a home?” Some new help is available. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs announced one-time grants for Native Hawaiians affected by the fires — $9,000 to eligible homeowners and $4,000 to eligible renters. “People wonder if things are forgotten, if Lahaina is forgotten,” Hawaiian community advocate Archie Kalepa said. “This is a reminder for our community, the help is there.” The State also announced it has acquired a former hotel in Kihei with 175 guest rooms to be used initially as temporary housing for the displaced and eventually repurposed as a teacher and workforce rental housing project. Hale ʻO Lāʻie — formerly the Haggai Institute property — is expected to open to wildfire survivors in early May, 2024.

Among other things, having something to talk about when friends or family visit is crucial. The sentiment rings true whether you are a human, or a gator, and I have the perfect conversation activity this holiday season thanks to the final RS-25 engine test in November at NASA Stennis. The 650-second test is likely the longest of the 12-test series. It involved a technique known as gimbaling, where the engine is pivoted throughout the hot fire. When the four RS-25 engines gimbal during launch of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket, gimbaling helps stabilize the rocket as it reaches orbit. To better understand how this works, think about hula hooping, which involves using body movements to twirl a plastic hoop that spins around one’s waist, neck, arm, or leg. Typically, younger folks participate in this activity, but I have learned you are never too old to give it a go. Maybe you cannot teach an old dog new tricks, but an old gator is another story. Ack! Much like gimbaling an RS-25 engine, hula hooping can involve technical motions, although it is more about freestyle movement. As one might expect, an RS-25 engine test has a detailed plan with a list of objectives. Test operators pivot the engine in precise motions, on a circular basis or back-and-forth in a sort of sawtooth manner. The focus is ensuring the engine can move as needed to direct and stabilize the rocket during flight. NASA is continuing the current RS-25 test series into 2024, which means more hot fires to come. I may bring my newly discovered hula hooping skills into the new year also. It will be perfect timing to shape up for a new, exciting year. I have practiced through and through, so I expect everyone to be very impressed. If nothing else, it will be about a great source of amusement and laughter. While I do not have footage of my hula hoop practice, I do have video of the engine gimbaling at NASA Stennis. When you watch it, imagine your favorite gator hula hooping. Happy holidays, all! NASA/Danny Nowlin Hlass Celebrates Birthday with Visit to NASA Stennis It was fitting that the first director of NASA’s Stennis Space Center chose to celebrate his 96th birthday by visiting the south Mississippi site with his family on Nov. 22. After all, Jerry Hlass had a lot to do with the “birth” of the modern propulsion test site. NASA built what was then called the Mississippi Test Facility in the early 1960s to test Saturn V rocket stages that would carry humans to the Moon for the first time. When the Apollo Program ended in the early 1970s, the future of the test site seemed bleak. Hlass was familiar with the south Mississippi facility. He had supervised facilities nationwide for NASA during the 1960s when the Mississippi site was under construction. In that capacity, Hlass made many trips to the site as he monitored the construction project. Now, the site was the focal point of Hlass’ master’s thesis, titled “Search for a Role for a Large Government Facility,” at George Washington University. At the time, NASA was seeking a location to test engines for its planned space shuttle vehicle, and Hlass saw it as a perfect use of the Mississippi Test Facility. When asked his opinion by the Site Evaluation Board, Hlass gave his case for the election of the Mississippi location for the test campaign. On March 1, 1971, the Mississippi Test Facility subsequently was selected for the sea-level testing of the rocket engines to power the space shuttle. Several years later, on Sept. 1, 1976, Hlass was named manager of the very same site, by then known as the National Space Technology Laboratories. Before Hlass accepted the assignment of taking over the reins of the NSTL in 1976, NASA Headquarters had considered withdrawing the NASA management team from the installation. The small NASA onsite management team was responsible for providing support services to about 18 federal and state agencies and providing technical support to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for the space shuttle test program. The Earth Resources Laboratory (ERL) was at the site, but it answered to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, and the Space Shuttle Test Complex was under Marshall management. Hlass believed that NASA should be far more influential in the center’s management role. During his years as manager and director of the installation, Hlass was able to bring the ERL under site management and assume a much more direct and meaningful part in supporting the Space Shuttle Program. Through his efforts, Hlass gained the confidence of officials from NASA Headquarters and the respect of the Marshall test team and many other agencies in residence. As a result, the work accomplished by Hlass has been said to have resulted in the “reNASAfication” of the installation. Hlass retired as site leader in 1989. In honor of his leadership and significant contributions to NASA, the center unveiled a street sign designating Jerry Hlass Road onsite in 2015. I wrote this tribute song on a whim one day and recorded it to utmost satisfaction with Bret Alexander and Ron Simasek of The Badlees. Fans of early psychedelia (think Yardbirds), spy movie music, and twangy guitars will dig this one. Meanwhile, God bless Clive and his family. Thank you for the quality cinema you’ve given us.
