This is Josee from Josee the Tiger, and the Fish

Josee was born a paraplegic and uses a wheelchair. In the first half she uses a manual wheelchair, switching to electric after getting in contact with social services. She tends to be incredibly defensive in reaction to poor treatment, falling under the "tsundere" archetype. She has a passion for art and intends to find employment as a children's book illustrator

Negative stereotypes? (spoilers)

Some see Josee herself as a stereotype many also find her to be a relatable and real character. Some take offense to the way social services are portrayed, but this is similar to many peoples real life experience being dependent on well fair, myself included.

Genre: Drama/ Romance

I've been eagerly waiting for the letter J to watch this movie.

The story follows Tsuneo and Josee, two young adults who meet on the street after Tsuneo saves Josee when someone pushes her wheelchair down a hill. Tsuneo gets hired by Josee's grandmother to be her caretaker and follow her every demand, which leads to a surprising friendship.

At a first glance this movie is just a classic romance story filled with cliches. In my opinion, this story is so much more than that. I’m not disabled so I can’t speak on struggles that Josee faces in the story related to that but of course Josee is so much more than that. The movie focuses on her struggle with depression as well as her struggle to follow her dream and understand her own self. Honestly, it’s difficult for me to speak on this movie without spoiling a lot of the plot as its not incredibly complex. That does not keep it from being a touching love story about 2 young adults finding each other and themselves.

The movie is beautifully animated. Studio Bones did an incredible job with the visuals and while I’m aware that I talk a lot about art in my reviews, this one is especially important in my humble opinion (I specifically will avoid watching anime that I’ve been recommended if I don’t like the art because otherwise I can’t focus. Pretty art makes brain go brrrrrrrr) Josee is an artist and her being an artist is such a big part of her character and her story so I believe that if this movie had anything but incredible visuals it really wouldn’t do her justice at all.

I would say that this is probably a good movie to watch with friends who aren’t too into anime but definitely curious, especially if they like dramas/romance movies. Beautiful art and visuals combined with an easily understood story - that is still good! - make for a great casual no-brainer watch. However, it’s still worth paying attention to its detail. I wish more people talked about this movie!

Sidenote: this scene was my favourite in the whole movie. They’re so cuteeee

2. what's your feel-good movie?

Kiki's Delivery Service, or any movie about creative output of some sort, like some other ghiblis and more recently Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish. Movies that remind me of the better parts of myself.

9. what calms you down?

Art! Anything with a dreamy, soft, and peaceful atmosphere. A lot of my tumblr blog is built to bring all of this to one place so I can scroll through periodically and feel better. I daydream a lot (or think about it at night) of the art I have seen, too.

Currently I am discovering crafting helps a lot. My mind tends to go in circles, so having some activity to keep it busy has been good. Embroidery and cross stitch has turned out to be more strategic than I realized it would be, but just enough for it to have a meditative rather than stressful effect.

I also like keeping a sticker book for similar reasons to creating a tumblr space I can scroll through. This time it's just art in a book.

19. most important thing in your life?

I don't talk about it a whole lot, but I am a religious person. I see it as a personal call (not something you use to tell other people what to do) and it is important to me to keep my head on straight with it...to keep myself aligned with my values and how I treat people.

26. what movie would you want to live in?

This is probably a predictable answer, but what can I tell you, the truth is...a ghibli movie. And not necessarily one of the fantastical world ones, but the ones that aren't even that different from our actual world now. Maybe Totoro would be fun...it's a light mixture of both. Idk, I am searching all the time for ways to bring a particular peace I feel in those films into my own life.
