O Carlo, ascolta! ... Io morrò Verdi, Don Carlo Jorma Hynninen
O Carlo, ascolta, la madre t'aspetta a San Giusto doman; tutto ella sa... Ah! la terra mi manca... Carlo mio, a me porgi la man!...
Io morrò, ma lieto in core, che potei così serbar alla Spagna un salvatore! Ah! di me non ti scordar! Regnare tu dovevi, ed io morir per te. Ah! io morrò, ma lieto in core, che potei così serbar, etc. Ah! la terra mi manca... la mano a me... a me... Ah! salva la Fiandra... Carlo, addio! Ah! ah!...
~
Listen, Carlos … Your mother expects you tomorrow at San Yuste; she knows all! … Ah! The world slips away from me … O Carlos! Your hand …
Ah! I die with a happy soul, since you are alive, saved by me … Ah! I see a happy Spain! Farewell! Carlos, ah! Remember! Remember, Carlos! Yes, you must reign, and I must die for you! Ah! I die with a happy soul, since you are alive, saved by me … Ah! I see a happy Spain! Farewell! Carlos, ah! Remember! Ah! the world slips away from me … Carlos, your hand … Carlos! Ah! Save Flanders! Farewell! Carlos, ah! Farewell!
~
Carlos, höre... Deine Mutter erwartet dich morgen in St. Just. Sie weiß alles! Ah! Die Erde wankt unter mir … O Carlos! deine Hand... Ah! Ah! Ich sehe ein glückliches Spanien! Lebe wohl! Carlos, ah! denke daran! Ah! Die Erde wankt unter mir ... Carlos, deine Hand ... Carlos! Ah! Rette Flandern! Lebe wohl, Carlos, ah! Lebe wohl!

It’s National Veteran’s Day in Finland!
Wikipedia:
The war of Lapland and the second world war ended in Finland on 27 April 1945, when the last German troops had retreated to Norway (which was at the time still under German occupation-) across the border in the municipality of Enontekiö.

The Album: In The Stream of Life - Songs by Sibelius.
There are plenty of recordings out there of Sibelius’ songs, but this is slightly different. Sibelius composed very few songs directly for orchestra. He orchestrated only a handful himself. But many of Sibelius’ songs are a perfect fit for orchestral accompaniment, so over the years a number of musicians have tried their hand in orchestrating them. Some of them are quite good, even if no one so far has matched the brilliance of the few songs Sibelius orchestrated himself, such as the small masterpiece “På verandan vid havet”.
Some of these orchestrations we find on the new album from Canadian baritone Gerald Finley. But the main reason to buy this album is the new orchestrations of seven of Sibelius songs made by the great finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. He created a new song cycle and named it “In the Stream of Life”, where Rautavaara grouped together songs from different periods in Sibelius’ career. The common theme is that Rautavaara chose songs that would fit Finley’s voice, since the songs were orchestrated specifically for him. This was one the the last projects of Rautavaara’s before his death last year. As expected, Rautavaara’s orchestrations are masterful. He keeps them very much in the master’s style without ever resorting to just copying.
Finley sings the songs with his usual eloquence. I was surprised to hear Finley sing in a decent Swedish (since most of Sibelius’ songs were composed in Swedish, Sibelius’ mother tongue). Finley faces tough competition from some of the great Finnish singers in this repertoire, like Jorma Hynninen, Kim Borg, Tom Krause and Martti Talvela, but he holds his own very well. Perhaps not on Hynninen’s level (during his prime Hynninen was, in my mind, the greatest male interpreter of Sibelius’ songs). But Finley comes pretty close.
Finley is excellently accompanied by Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. They also play a few of Sibelius’ tone poems (Pohjola’s Daughter, Romance, The Oceanides) and do it well. I wouldn’t mind hearing them give a few of Sibelius’ symphonies a go.
But it’s Rautavaara’s orchestrations that make this album a must-buy for all Sibelius fans.
