Nike Through the Decades
© 2023, Tristan Faedo
80's
The first Air Jordan shoe was produced for basketball player Michael Jordan during his time with the Chicago Bulls on November 17, 1984 and released to the public on April 1,
1985. The shoes were designed for Nike by Peter Moore, Tinker Hatfield, and Bruce Kilgore.
90's
The Air Jordan 6 was released in 1991, and is notable as Michael Jordan won his first championship while wearing the model. It was originally available in five colorways, including the 'Black, 'White', 'Carmine', 'Sport Blue', and 'Maroon.
2000's
On the heels of the release of the universally ridiculed Space Jam reissue, we had to include the 2000 Air Jordan 11 Retro Space Jam. The original released in 1996 was the pair that Mike wore to play the Monstars in Space Jam, but this 2000 Retro is definitely easier to get your hands on.
2010's
More than just the biggest shoe of 2010, the
'South Beach' LeBron 8 could also be considered one of the most popular 'Moment' shoes of all time.
Today
The Air Jordan 3 "White Cement Reimagined" is definitely one of the best sneaker releases of the year so far. And that's pretty obvious the moment you look at the shoe. Inspired by the Jordan 3's original and iconic "White Cement" style, the "White Cement Reimagined" features details that haven't been seen on any of the model's recent retro releases.

THE LEGACIES OF PHIL LESH
I dutifully watched this past Spring’s and Summer’s TERRAPIN CLUBHOUSE/DARKSTARATHON YouTube posts, asking myself how the music stood on its own terms and, in particular, did PHIL LESH still have it. Wellllll, thank you for a real good time, but he was sometimes frail but often enough not. The standard repertoire was rehearsed yet again with just fine, but not top drawer, players. Stu Allen, Grahame Lesh, and Jason Crosby were solid regulars. John Molo was often the drummer and he notched things up and Holly Bowling too made things special when she could make it.
He/they did jam into Miss You and did Gimme Shelter with Karl Denison just days after he closed out the Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamond Tour and he/they followed Stanley Jordan into Somewhere Over the Rainbow rather than leave it as a solo showcase. It was mostly just good old Grateful Dead music with one of the masters who could still show some flash often enough.
It was even more valedictory, it turns out, than it seemed at the time. But it was, even at the time, a graduate level seminar in the Grateful Dead. The DARKSTARATHON concept was to pick up a jam from one time to the next, reprising what the previous ensemble did in a Dark Star and associated improvisation that never ended, well until it did. Sometimes they returned to themes developed by the Dead themselves (1971’s Beautiful jam or the Playin’>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playin’ sandwich from 1974). Professor Lesh would recount previous practice often with prodding from graduate assistant Grahame Lesh, but he always admonished participants to really grab the freedom to break out of the format and steer everyone into a song or theme.
TERRAPIN CLUBHOUSE/DARKSTARATHON was a legacy. So was the numerous iterations of Phil Lesh and Friends. The Quintet with Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco, and Molo was a formidable and stable band. Their ethos of jamming out everything at any time was a significant extension of Grateful Dead music. What I value about Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, my vote for the next generation band, is that they are as much a PLQ cover band as a Dead one. The Larry Campbell/Jackie Greene band with Steve Molitz and Molo also had a good run and Greene got an extensive and deserved apprenticeship. He was the most developed example of a Phil and Friends University student, but lots of folks played in the band adding both their takes on this great body of work and, whatever their contributions, gaining a bit of Dead DNA into their own.
So PLF is another legacy of Phil Lesh. It was a vehicle for his vision of his/their contribution. He matured as a leader and, though he had a prickly side, he became a grand old man.
His main legacy though is the GRATEFUL DEAD itself, particularly through the mid 1970s hiatus which is MY era, where my Dick’s/Dave’s Picks collection is fattest.
Anthem of the Sun took me a while to absorb, but it was Lesh who was behind many of the recording studio experiments. Equally though he was as much a lead voice on the Live/Dead Dark Star that had me immediately. At my second show, 11/13/72 had a Phil Stomp jam in the middle of the Dark Star that led into Morning Dew. My next show was a three set one in Des Moines in May 1974 that had yet another Stronger Than Dirt bass solo in Eyes of the World. I also saw/heard the solo which was the debut of the Eyes of Horus bass in 2009 leading into a show opening The Other One.
It took the archival releases from 1971-1974 to capture just how central Lesh was to the Grateful Dead. They were essentially a quartet in 1971 when Mickey Hart left the band and Pigpen would come out and sing or just hang way back and Lesh was to the fore. The jammy/jazzy 1973-4 Dead was driven by Lesh. Even Seastones in 1974, Lesh’s set 1.5 with Ned Lagin were ur-Drums/Space. I was listening hard to the Dead then, but, absent shows and taping, I had to rediscover this era much much later.
His is a legacy to celebrate. His death is different than Garcia’s as he had more than 29 rich years to help us understand what it was really about.
Believe it if you need it/If not, just pass it on.
