bad show eppysode simulator. cersei has three glasses of wine in her hand and orange hair. she is making out sloppy-style with a floor length gilded mirror but oh no! jaime is not there! where is jaime? he’s actually staring soulfully into brienne’s eyes as she delivers a heartfelt monologue about being ugly (she is gwendoline christie.) across the narrow sea missandei is curling dany’s hair with a revlon styling brush it’s very chic very medieval. jorah is jacking off in the corner they just sort of ignore him. in the north theon and sansa are running through the woods to escape evil gay iwan rheon and theon looks sooooo tortured (they dunked alfie allen in olive oil and dressed him in an ascot made out of dryer lint.) loras gets hatecrimed so hard that he blows up and is never mentioned again. in the background of some shots you can see peter dinklage tying a noose. at the very end kit harington turns to the camera and says well we sure had a game of thrones! and they they all stand in a line and kill themselves. easily television!

Worst things GOT did casting wise:

- making Dany too beautiful (+ styling her in a way that she never has a hair out of place, always wears BLUE - which makes her look peaceful and soft and angelic, not making her burn her hair off etc). I just think of that one official art piece that's in the illustrated AGOT book where dany is bald, with the dragons and sparks and frames around her and its so striking instead of the "beautiful angelic blonde women stand empowered with her tits out" scene we got

- casting Iain Glen as Jorah and not like. a random Lannister (like. Come on. He is a burly and ugly man... why are you casting one of the most beautiful men to play him.... this is how we ended up with dany/jorah shippers)

-making Joffrey too unattractive (this is not meant to disparage JG who is a great actor and seems like a really cool dude and i'm not saying he's ugly but I think from his very first scene Joffrey looks very punchable and it would have been so much smarter to make the audience .. relate to Sansa's infatuation with his golden looks. In my head (and in all the official art) Joffrey looks like a male version of cersei/a younger version of Jaime.)

- making Dany, Jon, Robb, Marg, Brienne etc 10+ years older than Sansa and the younger starklings .... It's not "the main characters and arya (who is so cool and can kill people) + the little children" it's ONE AGE group of equally important characters

Like I know people are upset at Ned/Jon etc being too attractive, WHICH I GET, but I feel like those were very vibe based casting decisions and i'm ultimately fine with that (I also think it's easier for the audience to root for someone if they're attractive so like. I guess they had to do it) but these other things resulated in people's perception of the characters being so wildly different from what they're supposed to be. The real reason people get so angry whenever someone says they wish tamzin had stayed is because they don't like the idea of daenerys not being this ethereal beauty (TM is beautiful but not in a conventional way) that they can fully root for without issue.

1. NO YOU ARE SOOOOOO RIGHT ABOUT THEM REFUSING TO LET DANY LOOK UGLY. it’s not to say tamzin isn’t clearly beautiful, but i think she’s beautiful in the same way gwendoline christie is, which is that she’s very striking and she has a strong presence but she’s not exactly what people picture when they say “typical hot lady” (which is Crazy these are all able bodied white women, like the definition of “beauty” is soooooo fuckijg narrow that tamzin merchant is ~atypically beautiful) vs emilia definitely is, and YES like everything from not burning her hair off to emilia being,,,,,fuller in figure than dany as a fourteen year old would be is just very clear that they saw dany different than the way she is On The Page. i mean i know people whack george for saying that she’s like a sexy funny lady or whatever but george never lets go of the fact that she’s incredibly young whereas d&d completely miss that part of her character.

i will say i Get the criticism of tamzin perhaps not picking up on the conlangs easily because one thing you can say for emilia is that she had a decent head for the conlangs, she’s even still partially fluent in dothraki lmaooo. but all the other stuff they said about why they recast dany it’s like. hmmmmmmmmmm.

2. absolutely right about iain especially because he’s similar to idk paddy in that he’s got CHARISMA but unlike viserys, they didn’t intent to portray him as a deeply flawed, antagonistic character they went in portraying him as like an objectively Good Guy dedicated to dany. he’s just so much less creepy and pushy in the show and has several scenes where he shows some moral backbone - that “yet here you stand” “yet here i stand” scene is sooooooo good for example, the fact that he actually apologizes for spying on dany, giving him the greyscale story & not having him fuck a valyrian looking woman in a brothel 💀, etc etc - and you also just lose some of the creepiness here because emilia is clearly a grown if young woman and ian is handsome, so it’s like. welll of Course you want to root for them to be together! and never mind that this is a Massive departure from their book characterizations!! again, they have this idea of jorah in their head that doesn’t match up with what’s on the page even a little.

3. i do get your point re: joffrey and i think this is my problem with aidan as littlefucker too - they’re too obviously villains and it makes ned and sansa look stupid. like, in the books we have that moment where robb almost decks joffrey which does seem to signal something bad but the crown prince being full of himself doesn’t mean he’s going to threaten his betrothed’s sister with a sword then get his ass handed to him by a toddler. in the show we get QUITE a number of scenes where joffrey is shown to be a brat AND as you say, just like aidan, jack has a Certain Look, he looks like a shitty jock who has allegations against him ajsjdj like irl when jack smiles he’s so adorable!! but in the show they REALLY play up his ability to channel a greasy aura ya know aksjd. when the point of asoiaf is often that villains don’t LOOK like villains, but some of our Main Villains clearly resemble typical villains in the show.

4. “it’s ONE age group of characters” NO YOU ARE SO RIGHT. like, there’s several years difference from robert to ned to cat to the twins to tyrion but they’re all the same generation of characters. there’s that exact same age difference from brienne to robb, dany, jon to sansa, arya, bran, with theon kind of similar to characters like jorah, who are old enough to remember The Before Times but aren’t quite in either generation. but because they wanted dany, brienne, jon, robb, and margaery to be more of a Typical archetype rather than an exploration of that archetype, they aged everyone up and essentially invented another generation between the “adult” characters and the “kid” characters. not to be super nerdy here but one of my favorite worked shoots in wrestling is one cody rhodes did where he was ranting about the way young wrestlers get put through the grinder and he has this amazing line where he sums it up as “old men talking, young men dying” and it’s not to say there aren’t a lot of old dudes Also dying lmao but you really see this where young leaders are often unprepared for their responsibilities and used as puppets by older men and you just MISS THAT when that whole generation is so grown!

it’s like they looked at those themes of war being terrible and all consuming and brutal no matter how justified you feel you are and went “wow war is brutal 😍” LIKE PLEASE????

Hello and happy new year! I had another question for you, an aspect of marriages in Westeros that I feel unsure about: do you think that in the North, marrying someone from one of the mountain clans would be considered less “prestigious” than someone from a more traditional (for lack of a better word) house? And as far as I can tell, it seems that different branches of House Flint aren’t necessarily described as all being mountain clans, although Arya Flint was from the mountain clan branch?

Do I think there could potentially be some level of snobbery from one or more of the noble families of the North toward the northern mountain clans, and specifically marriage with them? Possibly. While the severe disappointment and alienation experienced by Lynesse Hightower after returning with Jorah to Bear Island was certainly exacerbated by her culture shock after leaving the heart of southron, specifically Reacher, urban society, even some of the mountain clans’ fellow northern nobles might find life in the northwestern hills quite a bit different from their daily experiences. The lack of aristocratic finery characteristic of the mountain clans - no major cities or towns, no lordly titles, no chivalric tourneys, only “small and rude” castles - combined with the hardscrabble existence in these areas may strike northern families like, say, the southron and city-minded Manderlys or even the quasi-chivalric Dustins of prominent Barrowton as crude and strange, which in turn could extend to the families living in the hills. The Norreys, Wulls, Harclays, and their neighbors are as much vassals of Winterfell as any of the other families in the North, but their relative isolation and absence of aristocratic splendor may influence those other families to see such clans as somewhat strange, especially as potential marriage partners. Needless to say as well, daughters of the northern mountain clans would likely bring little in the way of liquid wealth, and perhaps not valuable land either, to serve as a tempting dowry for a non-clan House.

However, do I think that such an attitude is probably hugely prevalent across the North as a land and (sometime) kingdom? Probably not. No one, so far as we know, lambasted Cregan Stark for marrying Arra Norrey, nor Rodrik Stark for marrying Arya Flint. The historical closeness, both physical and politico-dynastic, between the Starks and the northern mountain clans likely, I think, limits the extent to which other northern families sneer at the mountain clans as fellow, equal aristocrats, including for the purposes of marriage. Likewise, while some families in the North might style themselves along the lines of southron noble Houses, and so distinguish themselves to some extent from the mountain clans, other families would probably find the lives of, say, the Wulls or Burleys much like their own; indeed, I speculated before that Mormont sons and daughters, used to the hardened and rustic existence of Bear Island, may regularly intermarry with daughters and sons of the mountain clans. Plus, the question of intermarriage between hill clan families and other northern families may simply not come up very often, given the relative separation of the northwestern hills and their residents from the rest of the North: both Bran and Jon allude to the fact that the mountain clan families tend to keep to themselves (apart from their trips to pay homage to Lord Stark, or when they have important business elsewhere). So a family like, say, the Hornwoods or the Karstarks or Lockes may simply not find the clan families as obvious a choice for dynastic marriage alliances as some closer neighbors.

As far as the mountain Flints go, Jon provides the answer on that family tree in ADWD:

It was a tale that any northmen knew well. "My father's grandmother was a Flint of the mountains, on his mother's side," Jon told her. "The First Flints, they call themselves. They say the other Flints are the blood of younger sons, who had to leave the mountains to find food and land and wives.["]

Martin writes so many plot points and characters that should be the horniest and most mind ruining thing ever, but because of his style and the characters is the opposite. I dont know how many times Ive thought "Cersei would be a lesbian obsession if her fucking a woman as a power move wasnt written by anyone else" and "Jorah Mormont would be a pathetic sexy man icon if the woman he was simping wasn't a teenager"

To be fair I think GRRM forgets Dany is a teenager. I think he pulled the age numbers out of a hat in 1990, forgot how maths works or how actual teenagers are like, and has been regretting it ever since.

There's no excuse for what he did to Cersei/Taena. WE COULD'VE HAD IT ALL. ROLLING IN THE DEEP (<- of her myrish swamp)

(Genuinely. I think GRRM handles the coming-of-age parts of Jon and Robb's story arcs infinitely better than he handles Dany's, especially around sex and the concept of motherhood. Which is also why I don't think Lyanna having been 16 when he died says anything about any commentary GRRM meant to make about her and Rhaegar, he's just. not good at writing young women. rip)

I found this in my drafts and thought i’d share but here is my Small Town GOT AU:

Dany is a freshman and she’s the artsy creative girl that has always had really long hair in elaborate styles and everyone wonders how she has the time for them. She has three cats and calls herself their mother unironically, and she runs an insta page for them. She’s dating Daario who's probably a junior and is sort of a “bad boy” meaning he rides a skateboard and ditches class to hang out with Dany in the art room. People underestimate her but she runs for student government and is heavily involved with the activism clubs at school with her best friend Missadrei so everyone quickly learns not to mess with her because she’ll get MAD. Also Jorah, guy who graduated years ago but still shows up at all the school events, is obsessed with Dany and everyone thinks it’s weird but isn’t gonna say anything because he was the former starplayer of Sports Team and he gives her advice on student council even though he was never in it..

Myrcella is one of those middle schoolers who acts way older but somehow pulls it off. Like she has a perfectly curated instagram and always has a new matching lulu set and her hair is somehow never frizzy and she wears the pink sol de janeiro scent so people think she’d be mean because of how she looks (and her mom and brother are Cersei Lannister and Joeffrey) but she’s actually really sweet and kind of a loner other than her boyfriend who she met when she went to boarding school for a year in Dorne and she fully believes they’re getting married someday and has an entire Pinterest board already created.

Arya is not a theater kid but is in the stage crew to help choreograph stage fights and she’s really good at being stealth and dressing in all black. She teaches classes at local dojo (brilliant idea stolen from @jeyneofpoole )and that’s how she bonded with Sandor (janitor at school) who once showed up to her beginners class consisting of mostly 7 year olds and still stayed the whole class. At school she sometimes sneaks into the janitors closet to steal stuff for stage crew and he’ll help her break down sets after shows even though he complains about it.

Varys is the drama teacher who has all the theater kids sit in his classroom in the basement during lunch and tell him all the gossip around the school, and he’s a little shit stirrer so he always adds to the fire. His greatest joy in life is releasing the cast list with insane choices and watching chaos unfold while saying he just “wants what’s best for the show”. Always has a weirdly ornate shawl dramatically wrapped around him because it “gets cold in the basement”. Will go on monologues on a whim and tell stories that no one can tell if they are true or not but are entertaining nonetheless and people hope he’ll forget to assign homework (he never forgets).

Petyr Baelish, history teacher that flirts with the popular girls and makes everyone uncomfortable, former loser who tries to be cool as a teacher, but it’s a small town where everyone is townies and so people still remember when Ned's brother beat his ass because he professed his love to neds then girlfriend Catelyn.

She woke, blinking blearily at the sun through her tent roof. She was not in Drogo's big tent, but in her own, she recognized as the canvas came into focus. She felt wrong. She rose slowly, sitting up on her bed and looking around. She could see Rakharo's silhouette through the tent and Ser Jorah on the opposite side of the door. There were no other guards, though, no one else posted around the tent as there should be. It was strangely quiet, the bustle of morning for the khalassar was not going on.

Her head hurt, and she must have been seeing things, delirious, for there was a man in the tent with her. He was dressed in the colors of her house in the style of Westeros, completely out of place in Essos. He looked like Viserys, but... Strong.

"Rhaegar...?" Perhaps she was dead. Perhaps this was the other brother she'd never known.

Author’s note: I imagine in the fic that the Dothraki privy resembles the one featured in the Thai Drama “The Love Destiny”

The Dothraki were supposed to help him reclaim his throne, but they seemed to only care about Daenerys. Did they realize that he was the reason they even had their beloved Khaleesi. He spied Jorah Mormont watching his sister with adoring eyes as her attendants styled her hair.

He also had white blonde hair but the Dothraki didn’t want to style his hair, they barely acknowledged his presence. Jorah told him that if he tried harder to embrace Dothraki culture they would be more endeared to his cause.

Viserys didn’t want to change his ways, he was the future king people needed to change to his ways.

The self proclaimed king had been dealing with his woes at the moment by drinking multiple glasses of imported wine. Viserys was starting to discover that the wine was going straight to his bladder.

“Brother, come put on this Dothraki outfit I had made for you,” Daenerys offered.

“Has everyone forgotten about my throne,” Viserys threatened, “I need to take a wee,” the self proclaimed king shouted as stormed out of the tent.

He headed to the Dothraki’s privy. Like many of the people of Essos the Dothraki had squatting privies, but Viserys didn’t care for a change in culture customs and just decided to take his piss standing up.

The self proclaimed king undid the front of his leggings and started to pee. While his back was to the front of the small structure, Viserys felt someone standing behind him. He turned around and saw Khal Drogo behind him.

The shock of the sudden appearance of the large man behind him, caused Viserys to freeze in place. Which resulted in him getting some of his piss on his leggings and boots.

The self proclaimed king thought about trying to run away but there was nowhere he could run off to. He was going to have to try and confront the Khal.

He didn’t really have a chance taking on Drogo. Before he could try to take him on The Khal grabbed him. The large man pointed to the wet spot on Viserys’s leggings, and grumbled something in a language that the Targaryen prince couldn’t understand.

“If you hadn’t have scared me, I wouldn’t have gotten piss on myself. I was just trying to have my wee in peace,” Viserys yelled and squirmed free.

Viserys ran back into the tent with Daenerys and Jorah trying to hide the wet spot and act like nothing had happened. Was all this drama caused because he would not squat to pee?

i adore shae & sansa. i love this change i think it’s the best change they ever did. the way sansa just went through this intense dinner & is taking her anger out on shae, just a lowly maid, but shae is so unflappable & notices sansa is crying and just decides to stop bitching. sansa wanting someone to brush her hair when one of the first scenes we got of her was catelyn brushing sansa’s hair…

keeping lommy saying he’ll yield and his murder when he asks to be carried but not the original “what do i do if the wolves come” “yield” joke is so fucking LAME I HATE THESE PEOPLE

so the margaery character change is the next big one (i’m not ranting about talisa yet). i understand wanting to focus in on her, how she plays the game, how she ~weaponizes~ her femininity in order to gain status. the thing is. i don’t like the ultimate decision to make margaery & olenna the acting heads of their houses when in reality, the tyrell plot is often olenna trying to act AROUND her dumb ass son!! i think this goes back to aging up those 14 year old characters - just makes their stories a bit hollow imo. also this first dress is so ugly omgggg

Jorah looked at her, a million thoughts occurring to him all at once. A part of him wanted to beg her not to leave. To see if they could re-arrange the arrangement somehow. Negotiate, bargain. But he knew there was only one way he could make her stay... And he wasn't willing to sacrifice his relationship with Pelle for it.

"I wish..." Jorah began, struggling to keep his voice strong enough to speak. "I wish we could've stayed together."

Diane bit her lip and looked down at the floor. "I- I know. I do too. Despite our differences, I-"

"Differences," Jorah repeated. "I'm so tired of hearing about our difference in age. What does it matter? I love you, not your age."

Diane sniffled slightly, as if trying to suppress tears. "I feel the same for you," she said. "However, it's not the age, it's-"

"Me having the temerity to love more than one person," Jorah said before he could stop himself. "I'm a monster, I know." He thought back to Lucy showing up in a white dress at her mother's and his father's wedding, drunk and screaming.

"I didn't say that," Diane said. Then she looked away from him. "That said... You cannot have your cake and eat it too, Jorah."

"What do you mean?" Jorah asked, feeling tense.
