Η Βόρεια Κορέα κατέστρεψε το γραφείο σύνδεσής με τη Νότια-Νέα ένταση (video)

Το γραφείο σύνδεσης με τη Νότια Κορέα στην πόλη Καεσόνγκ που βρίσκεται κοντά στη μεθόριο μεταξύ των δύο χωρών κατέστρεψε με έκρηξη η Βόρεια Κορέα, όπως ανακοίνωσε το υπουργείο Ενοποίησης στη Σεούλ.

Εκπρόσωπος του υπουργείου δήλωσε ότι η έκρηξη από την οποία καταστράφηκε το γραφείο σημειώθηκε το απόγευμα (τοπική ώρα), χωρίς ωστόσο να δώσει άλλες διευκρινίσεις.

Νοτιοκορεατικά μέσα ενημέρωσης μετέδωσαν ότι ακούστηκε μία έκρηξη και εμφανίστηκε καπνός πάνω από την Καεσόνγκ.

Η Βόρεια Κορέα έχει εξαπολύσει αρκετές απειλές εναντίον της Νότιας τις τελευταίες ημέρες, ενώ είχε προειδοποιήσει ότι θα καταστρέψει το γραφείο αυτό που δημιουργήθηκε το 2018. Σε αυτό εργάζονταν δεκάδες αξιωματούχοι και από τις δύο χώρες, όμως παρέμενε κλειστό από τον Ιανουάριο εξαιτίας της πανδημίας του κορονοϊού.

Η όξυνση των σχέσεων μεταξύ των δύο Κορέων ξεκίνησε με αφορμή Βορειοκορεάτες αποστάτες στη Νότια Κορέα οι οποίοι στέλνουν στη χώρα τους προπαγανδιστικό υλικό κατά του καθεστώτος της Πιονγκγιάνγκ και τρόφιμα.

Η Βόρεια Κορέα είχε καταστήσει σαφές την περασμένη εβδομάδα ότι εξοργίστηκε από τους αποστάτες και έκοψε όλους τους διαύλους επικοινωνίας με τη Σεούλ, ενώ είχε απειλήσει να κλείσει και το γραφείο σύνδεσης των δύο χωρών.

Η αδελφή του Βορειοκορεάτη ηγέτη Κιμ Γιονγκ Ουν, η Κιμ Γιο Γιονγκ, είχε απειλήσει ότι η Βόρεια Κορέα θα εκδικηθεί και «σίγουρα θα διακόψει τους δεσμούς της» με τη Νότια, αφού η Πιονγκγιάνγκ κατηγόρησε τη Σεούλ ότι δεν κατάβαλε καμία προσπάθεια για να αντιμετωπίσει αυτή την εκστρατεία «προπαγάνδας» από το έδαφός της.

As the Winter Olympics draw to a close, the celebrations at Pyeongchang continue to be marked by the North Korea issue. This week, the U.S. announced its harshest sanctions yet on North Korea, perhaps partially in response to Kim Jong-un’s diplomatic overtures towards the South. The sanctions are expected to take a harsh toll on the North Korean economy, where citizens are just beginning to benefit from a small degree of market liberalization.

The sanctions are somewhat indicative of the degree to which the Olympic games have become a diplomatic battleground between the Koreas and the U.S. Ivanka Trump, daughter of U.S. President Donald Trump, attended the closing ceremonies of the Olympic games, where, like Vice President Pence before her, she definitively avoided contact with the North Korean delegation. The closing ceremonies’ greatest controversy, however, was the appointment of General Kim Yong-chul to the North Korean delegation set to attend. Kim has been sanctioned by both Seoul and Washington for his alleged involvement in a deadly attack on a South Korean naval ship in 2010 that killed 46 sailors. North Korea has denied any involvement in the attack. Some U.S. observers have called Kim’s appointment a “power play,” and in South Korea, his presence spurred a protest by the main opposition party, the Liberty Korea Party. “President Moon Jae-in nailed a spike into the hearts of the bereaved families of the Cheonan incident and the people by allowing the murderer’s visit,” said Rep. Jang Je-won, the party’s spokesman. “We declare a war against the Moon administration that is influenced by North Korea’s socialism.”

However, the week was not without diplomatic victories for President Moon, who has been determinedly pursuing a policy of warmer relations with the North. On Friday, Seoul’s Unification Ministry announced that North and South would hold working-level talks on the North Korean side of the truce village, Panmunjom. And on Sunday afternoon, in a meeting with the same delegation carrying General Kim, North Korean representatives told Moon that it would be interested in talks with the United states, apparently in response to Moon’s remark that U.S.-North Korean negotiations were essential to rebuilding a relationship with the South.

Earlier in the month, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the White House was “listening” for cues that the North wished to being negotiations. However, the administration’s foreign policy continues to be contradictory as Trump maintains a tough stance. Pence has characterized the current U.S. policy as “maximum pressure and engagement at the same time,” a departure from the past, when Trump admin asserted it would only engage with the regime if it made substantive steps towards denuclearization. Whether North Korea’s willingness to engage will spur U.S. reciprocity is thus unclear.
