#gael garcía bernal#desierto#ggb filmography gifs#desierto 2015#gael garcia bernal#this is ultimately a pretty standard thriller of the being-chased-by-an-inexorable-killer type#where the cast is picked off one by one until only the most conventionally physically attractive remain#this is good news for gael's character#on account of being played by gael#i think this one is elevated by the setting both in terms of beauty (it is stunning) and by making effective plot use of it#that apparently meant they were shooting two hours' drive away from the nearest towns with no cellphone reception etc.#which may be why we don't see more films set here#also elevated by the performances which are uniformly good#also elevated by the themes (jeffrey dean morgan's antagonist is targeting migrants crossing the border)#so we're back in the territory explored in documentaries like who is dayani cristal but this time as fictional thriller#this film came out as the trump wall discourse was hotting up and that was naturally something that got talked about in interviews#clever inclusion of antagonist's dog which effectively constrains what the characters could do to get out of the situation#so unlike in many films of this type there isn't a screamingly obvious course of action that they should have taken but unaccountably don't#still it remains a genre film sticking broadly to the conventions of that genre so the plot isn't going to astonish you#i've still avoided giffing the most spoilery moments though#tbh i suspect gael's character is still screwed at the end but then i think that's also the point (see: themes)

I had a diabetic roommate who used to use really weird "swears" to express his pain. He would hiss "chupaaaaaaaaa" so loud you could hear it outside the apartment whenever he had to check his blood sugar.
I knew what was wrong with this poster before I read anything. However, to be clear chupacabra literally means "goat sucker" and if I recall correctly it does kind of have that "get sucked off" vulgar kind of vibe. Like, this is a mythological monster that has the same kind of rage around it as American settlers had for wolves (and that's probably why this movie got made), so if course it's at least a little vulgar.
I'm not Mexican or Hispanic of any sort, of course, so I could be wrong. However, the director, Jonás Cuarón, is Mexican. I'm surprised he didn't change that. But, of course, it doesn't look like any of the writers or producers are Mexican (hard to say because most don't have informative bios).
What I find funny, tho, really funny, is that this is a copy paste family monster movie. Like Free Willy, or The Water Horse, or Magic in the Water (or The Iron Giant, or Ron's Gone Wrong). Generally kid has complicated relationship with father figure, some scientist is hunting a "monster," and kid befriends that monster. Monster gets too big or potentially dangerous to hide, scientist finds them, kid has to save/release monster to stop catastrophe, and in the process kid reconciles with father figure when the two begin to see things through each other's eyes.
Anyway, what I find funny is that they picked essentially the only ubiquitous Mexican monster for white people. And on top of that, they called this monster that a kid is going to befriend... That.

Bad Bunny Spider-Man Movie El Muerto Filming Update
Welcome back to the web of Spider-Man! Today, we dive into the El Muerto filming update. This is one of the highly anticipated Spider-Man spinoff projects, first announced about a year ago. this upcoming movie has generated significant buzz, especially with the involvement of multi-talented actor and musician, Bad Bunny, who has already made waves in the Fast and Furious franchise. As he sets his sights on the world of comic book movies, fans are eager to learn more about this mysterious and thrilling spinoff. Additional details remain under wraps, but the film will center on the titular character who receives superpowers after putting on a mysterious and mystical mask. Whether Spider-Man himself will make an appearance in the movie is uncertain, but given that the character has remained absent in other spin-offs, El Muerto will likely serve as a standalone story. With production on the project set to begin soon, additional casting announcements are likely to be revealed in the near future. As previously announced, the film will star Bad Bunny in the lead role, with Jonás Cuarón attached to direct a script written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer. While much remains under wraps, it is interesting to see more El Muerto filming updates. The story revolves around the eponymous character who discovers extraordinary abilities upon donning a mystical mask. The story promises to take us on a journey into a realm where ancient powers collide with modern-day heroism. While it's uncertain if Spider-Man himself will make an appearance in the movie, previous spinoffs have explored standalone narratives, suggesting that El Muerto will carve its own path. As we await the release of El Muerto, a Spider-Man spinoff shrouded in mystery, the excitement continues to build from fans of Bad Bunny. Stay tuned for more updates as the production progresses, and prepare as the Spider-Man universe expands. Read the full article

(The loopy cursive captions on this video annoy me, but I like the clip, and it *is* the best). Anyway.
G R A V I T Y
continues to be such an inspiring film. Rewatched it tonight with a new TV and sound system, and was pretty blown away. The effects range from subtle to breathtaking; the music treads a really evocative line between sci-fi epic and electronic; Sandra Bullock clearly worked her ass off for this role; and the writing knows when to speak and when to be silent.
