I request: Leonardo. Please and thank you đ.

Idk if everyone loves Leo or if my header and avatar just remind everyone about this amazing blue boy. (This oneâs super silly btw. Iâm just sillier as time goes on. Character development I guess?)Â
The iconic leador Leonardo (1987)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e5b83f2fea6537dc4438e46fb31ad027/1f127bde0ab6678d-ff/s540x810/f999ba947783130c61f925547eec4c1a497cb0a4.jpg)
Bro idk why but I loved this Leo. I have a tiny memory, especially with this version but I clearly remember that I thought he was the funniest and the coolest. I mean, he had swords, what was I supposed to do as a 7-year-old. NOT like him??? Anyway, while Raph was the best at insult comedy, I think Leo had the best puns and punchlines. I really like how nonchalant this Leo is compared to his iterations, going along with really silly ideas and having fun along the way. But because of this, his leadership is a little forced at times, he seems like such a chill and fun dude that when he gets serious, I have to squint and ask âare you Leo? Or were you just putting on act a moment ago?â Or my perception is entirely warped over time. Either way, good turtle boy, could have used some work tho. 5.7/10
Here comes grumpy lad wooo this is all read very monotone btw Fearless Leader (2003)
What. What the fuck happened. I was actually so confused when Leo turned really angry and serious and almost manic. I thought that episode when he popped into Caseyâs window and was like âHey bitch lets go beat the shit out of some lowlifesâ I was WOAH THERE BUDDY BACK UP BACK UP BACK TF UP. It was so sudden to me and when it was finally explained, it made some sense??? Like yeah, character development is great anâ all but this ainât it chief. I canât imagine what it was like having to wait for these episodes to release one at a time. Bc I watched every episode back to back on Youtube and I was genuinely bamboozled. But when you have an experience like that where guilt is weighing down on you from a situation you couldnât control, it wouldâve been HELLA HELPFUL to have at least a flashback, like a line saying âI was so useless!â at BARE MINIMUM. Like right after Shredder is booted off to Planet Zula, Donnie would notice that Leo didnât seem all that happy and would ask why and Leo would get upset and yell at Donnie saying that âYou wouldnât understandâ, âYou donât know how I felt, how I feel because of thatâ, etc. Like you donât even have to say he felt guilty or helpless, just give us something to grab onto. Weâre merely six-year-olds who thought they could climb the YMCA rock wall in easy mode but instead the script riders harnessed us up on the hard one and wouldnât let us come down until we rang the little bell at the top. I think that is the only problem I had with his Leo. The sudden change of calm and decisive to angry and irrational was so jarring that it felt unnatural without that crucial context. If you want a surprise reveal, at least hint at the reveal (like just about every Disney movie with their âtwistâ villains) not wait until the very last moment. I think this might be my least favorite Leo and I think the season where he stood out the most and seemed the strongest was Fast Forward (Which was GOOD FIGHT ME), especially in scenes with Dark Leo, his clone. He sees so much of himself in Dark Leo but he also sees something he had once grasped (AKA the poorly written character arc, I CANNOT stress how bad I thought it was). Although, I honestly think heâs a really good character and heâs a pretty neat guy. However, this score is entirely held up by Fast Forward and his connection with Usagi, sword bros to the end of time. 3/10 (2 for FF and 1 for Usagi)
And now a Leo that makes me genuinely feel UWU Leo (2012)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2fedc8379f4d4a5e59cf73ecc32cc07a/1f127bde0ab6678d-d3/s540x810/94f305cc98fc095b469055fef47aee5aa1b282bc.jpg)
I cannot stress how much I like this guy! Like his design is so appealing, his dedication, his obsession with Space Heroes, like I FUCKING LOVE IT. And everyone knows, that shit with Karai, at first when they didnât realize they were related, I can let slide but kajsdflksadf what even like why did the writers feel the need to add in more âlove interestâ implications like yuck yuck yuck. The only two interactions with Leo and Karai that I really like are when Leo defeats her using the healing hands technique and when Leo has a goth/emo/punk/idk Iâm new here phase and they team up and EXPLOSIONS. He was introduced to us as being incredibly naive and his idea of leadership is from some old cartoon thatâs basically star trek but ethically questionable. After his fights in season 1, to the finale with the technodrome, you can see his growth. Heâs able to formulate plans and make life or death decisions. BUT WAIT THEREâS MORE. When Leo got hurt, I felt like the oof sound effect mixed with some tears I normally shed at some Shojo manga bs. While the episodes following were super weird, it was a nice way to help Leo recover, not only physically but spiritually (Although I donât remember the spirit arc at all except the epic Raph vs Fishface fight, so weâre skipping that). When Master Splinter really died, you could tell there was a huge impact on Leo, but he had to remain stoic and lead the family now. A lot of heartbreaking moments in this series came from Leo and Iâm glad they took at least some thought into developing him. Tiny head Leo will haunt my nightmares, but the giggly fanboy will warm my heart constantly. 6/10
I only have one word for this Leo (Heroes in a Half Shell: Blast to the Past)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2d7ef0b94c539705237b534723fa60bd/1f127bde0ab6678d-96/s540x810/f8dced0f1e9e031d6de8d47e93c6a143053573ab.jpg)
This is a super crazy bad idea accent on the super crazy bad part have I mentioned itâs also a really terrible idea/10
Okay, spoiler alert, didnât really think this Leo was that grand Leo (2014/2016)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2952b7d40ae366a22b94d6c961158876/1f127bde0ab6678d-a7/s540x810/4f4b22d09b2371b6fd32c3fca47f9b73c811264c.jpg)
Painfully average. He didnât stand out that much, Raph was part of the focus and had that touching scene at the end, Donnie was ICONIC and Mikey (with his weird-ass eyes) was super lively and funny! Leo? Uh, I donât remember a single line he said. Because he never really grabbed my attention, I donât have too much to say on this version. The Raph and Leo fight felt forced and the whole âkeep this stuff that could turn us human a secretâ was pretty pointless and was added just to cause drama, I donât even remember what that Splinter and Leo conversation was about. Design-wise, really neat! You can see some more traditional Japanese clothing/style mixed with modern (Iâd feel a lot better about this assumption if some could tell exactly what the heck heâs wearing, but I get traditional Japan warrior vibes from it) in his look which was super neat! Other than that, if you like him, please tell me why because I donât get. He was just kinda eh. 5/10
AHHH MY BOY YASSS WHOOO!! Neon Leon (2018)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d16157d113625f5cfb7ba14cbcce0899/1f127bde0ab6678d-19/s540x810/53097646dbff9080a7bd411e4861f78ec0501f7d.jpg)
Okay, I loved Ben Schwarts already from Parks and Rec but like him being Sonic AND Leo, like DUDE. Heâs super funny by himself but teamed up with this shows writing and animation, it makes it hilarious. I literally love this Leo so much, maybe because weâre alike but honestly, heâs amazing. I love his design with the red and yellow crescents accenting his skin and livening up his color pallet. He has a very healthy and natural dynamic with his brothers, heâs the first to know whatâs wrong and tries his best to make up for his actions. This is really prominent in the most recent episodes, along with the episode portal jacked. In both, Leo is separated from his brothers. Portal Jacked is in a more literal sense, while Air Turtle handles in more of an emotional sense. While both are brief, Leo sees his error and tries his best to make it up to them. I love his dynamic so much and itâs so nice to see something like this compared to the unnecessary drama and tension between the brothers in the previous series. Itâs refreshing and this is something a younger audience needs to see; instead of fighting, itâs better to work together and improve yourself along the way. Improvement is a big theme for Leo here. Heâs a goofball, makes jokes at every opportunity and isnât quite skilled at fighting or using his weapon. But he grows over time, he learns to manage his power and heâs working on mastering it. Heâs trying to put aside his narcissism more and focuses on his family. I think the approach they took with him rising to leader rather than slapping it on his forehead was the goddamn best decision they could make. Heâs making plans, finding loopholes, helping out and getting out of his comfort zone. I cannot stress how well this show has handled Leo, along with the other characters. I canât wait to see more episodes about his growth and I am awarding him with one of the greatest honors I could give... 10/10
Storytime: I drew a super cute 2012 Leo, you should look at him. Shameless self-promo, but you should follow me on my main blog bc Iâm nice and I draw pretty pictures. Also. I have a little 2012 Leo Happy Meal toy??? I think??? guarding my window and heâs been there for YEARS. I need to bring him in and refresh his paint job.
Wow! I didnât expect this many requests for Leo, so the blog will be momentarily spammed with the requests, but it shouldnât be too much! Up next should be the last turtle (Mikey) and then we can get to some REALLY great requests Iâm eager to answer. As usual, please comment and reblog! Id love to hear your opinion!

Oneshot: Movies and Mermaids
((Have some Mikey and Draxum bonding *throws confetti*))
It wasnât as if Draxum had any genuine interest in human culture, certainly not! He could care less! ...Though, his obvious lack of caring didnât prevent certain annoyances.
Like how he would be sometimes be completely lost in certain conversations. A member of the faculty at the high school would ask if he had seen the latest film in theaters and if he liked it better than the remake, or how his fellow lunch servers would reference certain shows and encourage him to watch them as well - Gladys especially seemed entranced with a show regarding doctors all dating each other in-between doing their actual jobs, for whatever reason.
The rest of the city seemed to only aggravate him more. From displays and the videos that would play on the large screens on towers, to the advertisements he saw on the television box or in magazines. It just seemed like everything he saw in human culture was a reference to something or someone - a laundry list of names and shows and movies and jokes and even what were supposedly âsimpleâ concepts like technology and brands and lingo and-!
After over two months of living on the surface, Draxum had reached his limit. He was tired of constantly being confused. He was tired of constantly missing or misunderstanding the references.
He was tired of being reminded that this was not his world, that he was still a yokai in human clothing.
So naturally, as a man of science, Draxum thought it only made sense to start with some research. Granted there was an entire pantheon that he would have to go through, and without the power of the âinternetâ and a television box that only had five channels, it would be a incredibly slow process... At the very least, OâNeil had said that she would help him get a human library card when they both had a free afternoon.Â
In the meantime, Michelangelo had plenty of âreference materialâ, and even with the insistence that this was all for education and NOT entertainment, Draxum figured it was as good of a starting point as any, considering how much the humans seemed to admire their on-screen stories and their film stars. (No wonder Lou Jitsu was just as popular as an actor as he was as a warrior...)
It was late Friday night when Mikey showed up to Draxumâs apartment with a backpack full of movies of all different genres and formats and a VHS/DVD combo player tucked under his arm. âGood thing Donnie found this thing a few years ago, huh?â he said as he hooked it up.
Draxum didnât bother replying. Instead, he was focusing on his choices for that evening - as well as for the rest of the week, since Mikey said he could borrow them as long as he needed to - pulling out each tape or DVD case and examining it carefully. Quite a few of them looked like they were for children, which he probably should have expected, though he didnât dismiss them immediately.
âDonât worry,â he heard Mikey said, âI remembered what you said. All of these are super popular âstaples of human cultureâ that practically everyoneâs seen.â
âGood,â Draxum mumbled, putting aside a movie about a boat next to a movie about a boy gardener who wore a cloak and was apparently very harry. Picking up the next one, his expression flattened a bit at the cover. âThis one you can take back, I donât need to watch it.â
âHuh? Why- ohhh.â The box turtle chuckled as he took the tape, smiling at the younger version of his dad on the box. âSorry, guess that one accidentally got slipped in there. Though to be fair, âJitsu for Justiceâ is a total classic.â
âIrrelevant,â Draxum huffed, âI have no desire to watch ANY of Lou Jitsuâs films, no matter how popular they may be. Once was more than enough...â
âAlright alright, Iâll- wait,â Mikey paused, âso you DID watch his movies?â
âEr, I- Not because I actually wanted to!â Draxum told him, âIt was for research!â Mikey gave him a flat look. âHe had stopped fighting in the Battle Nexus and I needed to study his moves! I-I didnât enjoy doing it, if thatâs what youâre implying! His movies were still ridiculous and completely unenjoyable! I would never actually-â
âWhatever you say, man,â Mikey shrugged, ignoring the Baronâs growls at being interrupted, âThough, howâd you watch âem anyway? I didnât think that TV was that big of a thing down there?â
âI used my viewing orb to summon and display them, obviously,â Draxum told him, âMost yokai have them for when they need them, and theyâre much more useful and clearer than any television box.â
âIf you say so...â âHmph.â With that settled, Draxum went back to digging through the bag of movies. It didnât take long for another video to catch his eye, this one in a plastic case rather than a cardboard one, with a picture of a happy mermaid and an equally happy human plastered on it.
âAwwww!â Mikey said suddenly, âThat was Aprilâs favorite movie when she was little! Which meant it was one of the first movies she brought over to share with us! Heh, guess we borrowed it so often we forgot to give it back, whoops. But itâs a really good movie! See, thereâs this mermaid who wants to live on land as a human, and sheâs friends with a crab and-â
Draxum had begun to tune the turtle out as he continued to stare at the VHS case. Mermaids werenât too common in the Hidden City itself, though that didnât mean they werenât there at all. The city was next to water, after all, and some would live on the shore or become part of an air-boat crew - and they certainly didnât look like this.
He felt his thoughts start to swirl, becoming just as mixed as his emotions as a grimace began to form on his face. On one hand, Draxum supposed he shouldâve been grateful that the humans were portraying a yokai positively - as cute and friendly instead of vicious creature that lived to drown humans.Â
Centuries ago, before the Great Migration underground, Draxum had heard that and many other similar claims about his people... Baseless claims meant to justify hunts and attacking on sight...
On the other hand, did humans only see them as âharmlessâ when used for entertainment purposes? Did they only approve of yokai existing when they only existed in fiction, where they could be used however humans saw fit?Â
He was briefly reminded of the creatures - the âpoke-o-monâ - that he would occasionally see on shirts or on phones, creatures not directly based on yokai, but similar enough. He had to wonder how much other human entertainment was based on so-called fictional creatures and monsters that they never would have even smiled at before.
â-xum... Hey, Drax?â Mikey poked his bicep, making Draxum flinch. âYou okay, bud-?â
âFine,â Draxum snapped, though there was a little actual bite to it, âJust surprised that humans would portray a yokai so positively, even in fiction.â
âMost humans do think theyâre just fiction,â Mikey told him. After a moment, his tone became a bit gentler, thinking back to certain points brought up by his father and April. âThough, I can still sorta see why that would feel weird or kinda insulting, seeing a fake version of yourself or your people and not knowinâ how theyâd react to the real you, wondering if they would only like the fake you. That probably doesnât feel the greatest... and Iâm really sorry about that.â
Draxum blinked. He stared at the turtle for a few seconds before finally replying with, âYouâre a lot more introspective than I would have thought.â
âI get that a lot,â Mikey grinned, âBut hey, they donât call me Dr. Feelings for nothing. So, did you wanna keep this one then, or- I mean, I can understand if-â
Draxum stopped him, looking at the tape again. â...I am admittedly curious,â he said, âYou did say this was a movie humans watch as children.â Studying a speciesâ influences during adolescence could prove to be pretty useful in understanding the adults. âAnd besides, if the portrayal is truly offensive, I can always send a complaint to this âWalt Disneyâ and demand certain edits.â
âRiiiiight, though I donât think youâll be too mad at this one,â Mikey told him, âAriel is a great character, and all the other mermaids in the movie arenât portrayed as jerks or anything. ...Well, one guy kinda is but, uh-â
âLetâs just watch it already,â Draxum told him, shoving the tape into his hand, âThe sooner we start it, the sooner I can gauge whether or not itâs actually worth watching.â
Mikey smirked a little. âHeh, alright.â Opening the case, he pushed the tape in while Draxum went over to the couch they had gotten him at the thrift store, briefly checking it for bugs or lumps before sitting down. âGood thing itâs already rewound.â
The only annoying thing about that was that they had to sit through previews, though Mikey used that time to cook up some popcorn kernels that he had snagged on the way out of the Lair, easily cooking it using a pan and the stove top. (No one trusted Draxum with a microwave after That One Time.)
By the time he finished, the movieâs title had just faded onto the screen. Mikey smiled widely, the nostalgia from the music and the memories he had with the movie sending slight shivers up his shell.Â
Draxum, meanwhile, was watching the film intently, taking in every detail. The mermaids in the film were still completely different than actual mermaids, but at least they werenât an insulting caricature (even if they were a bit too human-like for his liking).
As it turned out, the main mermaid character was not only a bit of a collector and explorer, but also a human fanatic. âUgh,â Draxum grumbled as he grabbed a couple more pieces of the puffed-up corn-snack. Mikey gave him a bit of a look, but he ignored it. Just because he had been able to find a bit of common ground and comradery with his fellow lunch servers didnât mean he was willing to give ALL humans a pass.
At least the mermaidâs father seemed to have some common sense. In fact, Draxum found himself nodding in agreement with nearly every scene the mer-king was in. ...Up until a certain point, at least.
Mikey winced a bit as the scene began. He resisted the urge to go into his shell like he always had when he was little, but he did sink a little in his seat as Triton stepped out of the shadows. When he noticed Draxum glancing over at him, Mikey simply mumbled, âI always hate this scene...â
A couple minutes and a destroyed grotto later, and Draxum could sort of see what Mikey meant, understanding how Tritonâs act might have been âharshâ, as the orange-wearing turtle wouldâve put it.
As the movie moved onto the next seen, Mikey relaxed a little, though a frown remained on his face... However, his expression of sadness soon became one of confusion as he felt a hand pat the top of his head.
âUh... there, there,â Draxum mumbled, giving Mikey one more head-pat before retracting his hand. It was awkward as all heck, they both knew it, but seeing the sheepman somewhat care about his feelings still made Mikey smile.
It didnât take much longer for Ursula to make her appearance, and as soon as the Sea Witch began talking of deals and trades, Draxum gave a small smirk of his own.
âWhat?â Mikey asked, tilting his head a bit.
âI didnât realize Big Mama was in this movie.â
Mikey snorted at that. âSo what, you tell jokes now?â
The sheep-man shrugged as he grabbed another handful of popcorn. âJust making an observation,â he said simply. As the scene went on though, his mind made another small connection - Ursulaâs two eels reminding him of his own pair of pets, even if Flotsam and Jetsam were much more confident than his former goyles.
Even so, the reminder made his chest ache a little... Not in sadness, mind you, or because he actually missed them. No, clearly his chest ached for a completely different reason that he was sure heâd think of later.
Once the little mermaid made the contract and silenced herself, the film very much became a literal âfish out of waterâ story, complete with plenty of amusing moments featuring misunderstandings and an over-abundance of cuteness, as well as another musical number. Thankfully, before things became too saccharine, Ursula launched the second half of her plan to rule the seas.
After that, the movie moved pretty quickly through its third act. Draxum was a bit annoyed at the human prince being the one to ultimately save the day in the end, but overall he could agree that the ending was a pretty happy one.
As the credits rolled, Mikey looked at him with eyes wide. âSooooo, what do you think?â
Draxum cupped his chin in thought, staying silent for a few moments before finally speaking. â...If the kingâs trident had the power of transformation, why didnât he just turn the prince into a merman?â
Mikeyâs face fell. â...Thatâs what you got out of it?â
âItâs a valid question!â Draxum argued, âWhy should she have to be the one to transform?â
âBecause she wasnât just after the guy!â Mikey told him, resisting the urge to facepalm, âYou saw her collection and heard her song, she wanted to be human! She was tired of beinâ stuck in the same ocean and wanted something new - something she thought was cool!â
âHmph, I suppose thatâs true... Plus, she still has the option to turn back into a mermaid later on thanks to her fatherâs power, so at least thereâs that.â
The box turtle slumped back on the couch, disappointed though maybe not too surprised. âI guess that means you didnât really like it, huh?â
There was a long moment of silence. âI didnât completely agree with the ending but... the film overall wasnât too bad,â Draxum conceded, âNot as bad as I thought itâd be, at least?â
â...You really mean that?â Mikey asked, raising an eyebrow.
âI wouldnât waste my time lying about something as trivial as animated human-entertainment,â Draxum replied, âAnd... there were high production values. Characters were mostly understandable, and it was... cute. Not too annoying or insufferable. Even if it was still slightly inaccurate to actual mermaids and mermen.â
â...You know what, Iâll take it. And Iâm glad you enjoyed the movie, and not just for my sake.â With a bit of a âwhupâ, Mikey sat up and tucked his legs under his body in a sort of lotus position. âThough, now Iâm kinda curious. Whatâd the movie get wrong, and what else can you tell me about merpeople? I only ever saw one, on Huesoâs brotherâs ship, but that was only for like a second.â
This time, it was Draxumâs turn to give him a look. âReally... The child whoâs always pushing me to âembrace humansâ and hide my âmystic stuffâ is asking me to teach him about a member of Yokaikind?â
âHey, I only to tell you to hide your mystic stuff so you donât get yourself evicted, fired or arrested,â Mikey retorted, âIâm not the one goinâ around mutatinâ kids and/or lunches and making giant stone heads angry.â
â...Fair enough,â Draxum said, only slightly reluctant.
âBut as far as I can figure, thereâs no harm in just talking about mystic stuff. And as for my actual interest... Yeah, I really do wanna know.â Unable to help himself, Mikey directed his gaze towards the floor - down towards the Hidden City that he knew was there. That he only now knew was there.Â
He wouldnât have traded his life with his dad in the sewers of NYC for anything, but he wouldâve been lying if he said there wasnât a small part of him that wondered what it wouldâve been like to grow up around people that looked like him in a city full of magic.
âWe protect humans, but we donât like only humans, you know,â Mikey continued, âWeâve got other mutant friends, and yokai friends too.â His smile softened. âSenor Hueso and Sunita and the chefs Iâve met at Run of the Mill, theyâre all so amazing. And Iâve only seen, like, a fraction of the Hidden City but I know thatâs amazing too, and I just... This city - the surface - is always gonna be my home, but that doesnât mean I donât care about the other city or wonder about it.âÂ
He finally looked back at Draxum, his eyes firm. âSo yeah... I wanna know.â
There was another moment of silence between them, though within it, the slightest bit of connection was formed. Small and fragile, but no less noticeable.
â...Fine,â Draxum finally agreed, âBut pay attention, I donât want to repeat myself later. First off, no merperson has the same skin tone as a human. They range between greens, blues and grays to help blend in with oceans. Their eyes are also much wider than a humanâs to help them hunt.â
âMakes sense to me!â Mikey smiled, leaning back on his hands a little, though looking no less attentive. Even when the TV turned to quiet static, he kept his focus right on Draxum - a gesture the former warrior-scientist certainly appreciated, even if he didnât say so outright.
âMerpeople are also able to survive outside of water. While mobility becomes an issue depending on how often theyâre moving or traveling, they have no issues living on land - hence why some take to living on air-boats as a sort of compromise, plus it helps them travel across bodies of water in a shorter amount of time. They also donât eat humans, despite the lies told about them, though they can be territorial when they are in the water - although you canât blame them, especially if fish start to become scarce. Furthermore-â
It was sort of nice... Sure, Mikey had plenty he wanted to show and teach Draxum about humankind - and if all went well, then maybe there was a chance of Draxum having a change of heart. Maybe their technical creator wasnât totally evil, and maybe one day, he really would be a better person and would understand what he and his family already knew. Mikey certainly hoped that would end up being the case...
But, in the meantime, maybe Mikey would end up learning a little from Draxum too. And honestly, as long as it wasnât lecture series about âeffectively destroying humansâ or anything like that, the orange turtle didnât see anything wrong with that at all.
THE END

More TMNT Junk (this time 2003 post-canon!)
[Ao3 version]
Soooooo I was vaguely thinking about posting this, and then I saw shit that the soggy cheetohâs doing on my dash, and decided screw it-- to temporarily shove aside that unpleasant BS hereâs some more TMNT stuff.
(Full disclaimer, most of this came from me babbling to @sounddrive about this concept. Plus a couple added things thanks to @babblingweirdnonsense. Because why the hell not?)
SO
Just imagine the 2003 turtles living a ridiculously long time. I mean ridiculously long. Like still going strong when theyâre around 121. (You canât really tell me that it couldnât happen when the Ninja Tribunal are thousands of years old and still look like theyâre in their 30s-40s. If they can do it, so can these boys.)
It might be their mutation or it might be their level of chi control (or it might be both), and somehow Usagi's hanging on as long as they have (because separating Leo from his husband after that long would be cruel).
Yes you read that right, weâre going full-on Leosagi/katanashipping for this.
Of course with them being so old that brings up the question of why they wouldnât have been present for the events of season 6 (since most of it takes place 100 years after they were 18). But Iâve got an explanation for that!
20 years prior to those events they got caught up in a war in Usagi's world and got stuck there. It wasn't supposed to become a war-- it was probably originally just supposed to be a vacation, time away from loud city noises and all that-- but nope! One thing led to another and escalated out of control, and they couldn't turn their backs because that wouldn't be fair-- and then some pain-in-the-ass magic user tried to trap them in that world (maybe to make sure they couldn't get reinforcements).
- Needless to say, they werenât happy about that.
- So much inventive swearing from Raph. SO MUCH.
Plus Mikey probably adopting who knows how many kids. Because itâs Mikey and heâd hate the idea of leaving any orphaned kid behind when he can do anything about it.
- Though of course this is in addition to any kids he had already adopted over the decades who were spread out over their world and Usagiâs. So he just ends up with even more kids even though heâs already a grandpa... and a great-grandpa... and very likely a great-great-grandpa.
- Mikey will not be stopped.
- Leo and Usagi probably also have their own gaggle of adopted kids/grandkids/great-grandkids (although some actually related to Usagi through his son Jotaro, which is the family secret everyone pretends not to know, at least in Usagi's world), but they've got nothing on the sheer number of children and babies Mikey has taken in. There've been jokes that Mikey alone is going to completely rebuild the Hamato clan just through the number of kids he takes in.
Donnie in Usagiâs world mourns his lack of access to the tech he's used to, but he's been figuring out work-arounds. Mainly because sometimes when he's out in the field he wants nothing more than to just electrocute someone in a fight. What scares others is that he's got several nieces/nephews/etc. who have taken an interest in his inventions and tech to the point that they're sometimes referred to as a specific 'sub-division' of the Hamato clan (which can 'command lightning' and other such claims that most of them scoff at).
Raph's also got parts of the family that will happily glom onto him and follow him around and gleefully switch into 'coordinated ninja mode' when he gives the signal. People outside of the family tend to see Raph as one of the most terrifying of the family, but everyone in the family see him as a big old teddybear.
- Raph tends to lean on the 'scary' facade to keep people at a distance, because by that point he knows that if he doesn't then he's going to end up with a fan club. Again. And people are going to be throwing themselves at him. AGAIN. And he learned his lesson the last time (mostly).
- Though not being able to go anywhere in Japan in Usagi's world when he was about 50 without having people trying to throw themselves at him in increasingly desperate attempts to court him or while pledging their undying love to him was enough of a nightmare that he's amazed that sometimes he still forgets about trying to maintain a distance. Even worse, he still has a few diehard hangers-on that have yet to give up even though they've been trying to chase him for decades. (Usagi thinks this is absolutely hilarious and routinely ends up in cackling fits with Leo over it.)
- Mikey sometimes helps Raph dodge his fans and plays innocent if they spot him.
- (Raph was not counting on being seen as so attractive the first time he went to Usagi's world. For several subsequent visits he still wasn't prepared. When he found out about the first 'fan club' the poor man almost fainted, only to end up hiding for about five hours instead.)
People in that world are reasonably unsurprised by the fact that the turtles are still around (because I can easily imagine turtles in that world on average probably being a little longer-lived), but the surprise comes in with the fact that Usagi's still alive.
- He has made vague comments that maybe living with turtles for so long has affected him.
- He's also made vulgar jokes of varying levels of subtlety that have led Leo to facepalm, blush, clamp a hand over Usagi's mouth, or deliberately interrupt so that he won't have to hear one more comment about how sleeping with Leo has 'magically extended' his life.
- Mikey is terrible and cackles every time. Naturally he encourages Usagi's comments just because Leo is 'Too Old For This Shitâ˘', and therefore it's all the more hilarious to him.
- Usagiâs comments may have drawn them more attention than Leo would prefer.
- (You can thank @babblingweirdnonsense for this sub-point addition.)
Usagi: "The true secret of immortality is to worship the flesh of the Kappa Ninjas. I have bedded the leader, and he in turn worships my flesh and gives me life."
Leo: "Stop telling people that sleeping with me will make them live longer."
Usagi: -winking- "I'm trying to make our bed a bit more fun."
- Leo: "...Look what you did. I bet you're proud of yourself."
Usagi: -smirks- "I am indeed. After all, I know all about the magic of a skilled turtle."
Leo: ". . .I love you, but please stop saying words.â
- Raph and Donnie have mastered 'tuning this shit out for the umpteen-millionth timeâ˘'. (The kids still have various levels of shrieking about it though, which is part of what makes it so hilarious to Usagi and Mikey both. They both have a terrible sense of humor.)
Mikey's go-to excuse for why he won't settle down with someone while they're stuck in that world for those 20 years is that he's "married to being a parent" and doesn't have time for a partner. Considering the number of great/grand/kids he has, no one's going to disagree.
- Itâs mostly because he doesnât want to end up in the same situation as Raph.
Then there's the perpetual argument over whether Mikey trying to refer to their family as a clan of 'ninjurai' or 'roninja' is remotely acceptable. He insists that both mashup terms fit perfectly since their family is made up of so many ninja and samurai/ronin. Most of the family disagrees on the principle of 1) those aren't real words, and 2) as old as he is why does he still insist on butchering Japanese as much as possible? (He insists because even as an old man he gets a kick out of being a little shit.)
- Other contenders for mashup terms Mikeyâs gotten his family to shoot down are: samuninja, shinorai, ronobi, shininja, and rinjarai.
- Even his great/grand/kids have jokingly threatened to disown him for that.
- The argument has had various iterations going for decades
Everyone who knows anything about the family knows that if they want to interact with anyone who gives a sense of being calm, respectful, polite, and so on to go to Leo. And yet despite this everyone also knows that the five old men are possibly the best fighters in Japan; that all five of them are skilled, resourceful, and responsible. It still doesn't change the fact that at times Leo seems to be the only one who cares even a tiny bit about formality anymore.
- It also doesn't help that Leo probably knows entirely too many secrets from too many high-ranking officials scattered throughout that world's Japan.
- 'Oh yes! The responsible one! The leader! Now we can get some proper negotiations out of the wa- Oh no. It's him.'
- Old man Leo keeping a polite face even while the barest hint of a smile is on his face and amusement is dancing in his eyes-- because he knows.
Donnie's gotten so used to saying outrageous things in a deadpan due to having to occasionally explain his tech as 'magic' that there are times where he'll say something like, "No, it's intended to make an entire wall of a building explode if you sneeze near it," without even giving a hint that he knows he said anything that doesn't make sense.
- Raph may or may not have scared off some obnoxious would-be trouble-makers by telling them that if they didn't straighten up that he'd tell Donnie to just go ahead and summon the demons already.
- Leo's given up trying to tell the two of them to not say things that imply they're sacrificing people in some sort of twisted blood ritual. He's just grateful that their reputation is so wide-spread and they're so well-thought-of (if regarded as very strange) that most people seem to know not to take those comments seriously.
- Usagi may have once claimed that he was sacrificed and brought back from the dead several weeks in a row. Leo just rolled his eyes and pretty much told him to stop telling people that he'd let his brothers ritualistically kill his husband on a regular basis.
When Mikey wants to be lazy or a pest at the kids, he absolutely pulls the 'I'm old, I'm so achy and tired, I can't possibly get to my feet and walk that short distance to get (insert whatever here)' card. No one buys it. They've seen him in a fight, during training, etc. They know he's not 'frail', 'weak', or 'fragile' no matter how much he plays it up.
- Which at least once has resulted in a bout of--
"I can't possibly go on! I'll just stay here. And die. Of thirst. Because my grandchild who I thought loved me won't help dear old Grandpa."
"Grandpa. You were running across rooftops an hour ago. I highly doubt that you 'can't' get up."
"Dying. Of thirst. Leo! Leo, are you there?! Everything... going... dark..."
Leo just shaking his head. "No one in the family believed it when we were kids, no one's believing it now."
"I... can't possibly... move..." Over-exaggerated theater gasp.
"...Grandpa. I don't believe you. That didn't even sound close to a death rattle. And you can see the tea kettle from where you're sitting."
"...Too bad I don't have a good swivel-chair here."
"Mikey, no."
- (This is another sub-point you can thank @babblingweirdnonsense for.)
Mikey: âChild! Please give me that plate of food one foot away from me. My knees hurt.â
Child: âFather, I saw you beating an enemy ninja not two hours ago.â
Mikey: âI am sore from the fight.â
Child: âYou were doing a handstand five minutes ago.â
Mikey: âI can no longer walk on my feet! Only my arms work now.â
When theyâre finally able to go back to their world (a year after their younger selves return to their time) the media almost has a meltdown. Especially since Cody is able to confirm that theyâre them. (Because realistically you canât tell me that Donnie isnât a famous scientist in that time. All four of them probably ended up in history books.)
Donnie keeps his deadpan semi-nonsense explanations. (Explaining to family or someone who gets what heâs talking about or doing is one thing. To others? Heâll still say things like âItâs magicâ and leave it at that.)
- "No, really, how does it work?"
"The power of jesus."
- It even carries over to Donnie talking to reporters.
Reporter: âWhere were the four of you for all these years?â
Donnie: "I could tell you-"
Raph: "-but then he'd have to kill you."
Donnie: "-No I wouldn't. But it'd be difficult to answer."
Reporter: "Could you try to explain?"
Donnie: "...Somewhere over the rainbow and in another dimension."
Raph: "Don, we weren't in frickin' Kansas."
Donnie: "Close enough."
Raph: "No it wasn't. Wasn't even on the same side o' the planet.â
And to top it all off, thereâs the random thought of someone trying to suggest that one of the older turtles should probably sit in a chair normally (while they're either sitting on the back or on an arm or upside-down, who knows what), mostly out of concern that they might fall since theyâre so old, and just the whole,
"Child, I am far too old and nowhere near straight enough to care about how other people think about how I'm sitting when I'm comfortable."

So I know itâs not Mikey Monday, but....
For context, the tape we were watching was a sample career counseling interview. This is a course I was required to take, not for my program, but because my academic supervisor thinks it would be beneficial for me to pursue an LPC license. Which, granted, Iâm not sure if I want, but if I hadnât taken that course I wouldnât have seen this video.
In the interview, thereâs a point where the counselor asks the guy role-playing his client about having any favorite characters or characters he identified with. The guy mentions Michelangelo because heâs funny and laid-back. My notes are as follows:
Interesting thing about the guy saying Michelangelo was his favorite turtleâMikey is the one who is often characterized as âbrilliant, but lazy.â
o  Heâs kind of a silly character, which often distracts people from his perceptiveness and empathy. Sometimes he goes too far with his jokes or can be insensitiveâparticularly in the 2003 cartoon where he frequently shook his brother Raphael up by pressing his buttons, and once even seriously flipped him out by pretending to be severely hurt despite that not being the case. (The Shredder Strikes)
o  Heâs also fairly heavily coded as having ADHDâto the point that the most recent adaptation made that canon.
o  His weapon is the nunchaku, which takes a huge amount of skill to wield even one, yet he uses two fairly well, proficiently at fifteen.
o  Has an unconventional way of looking at the world, which often lets him come up with solutions his brothers, who are comparatively less out-of-the-box, sometimes donât think of. (Notes from the Underground, Touch and Go) This is also what lets him figure out what is going on with Leonardo in the fourth season of the 2003 series, where his brothers donât put it together.
Given the age of the guy in the video, he likely saw either the 1980â˛s series, or the 2003 series. At the time, I assumed he saw the â87 because freaks like me were the only ones who saw 2003 and liked it, sarcasm voice on freaks like me.
The boldface citations were added after the fact, but these were the specific episodes I was thinking about when I wrote this. Because for whatever reason, it seems like itâs easy to dismiss 2003 Mikeyâs complexity in favor of saying he was only ever âjustâ the funny one. If the series were made today, Iâd say itâs because audiences seem to like having all the subtext and characterization spoonfed to them a la Beauty and the Beast (2017) because itâs like...a plothole or something otherwise. But for the early 2000â˛s and I myself having been a child at the time who was barely even aware that Leo was getting âofficialâ arcs, I got nothing. Shell, maybe itâs just because he was popular with younger viewers.
From my perspective, I think itâs fairly obvious he had to have been more than that, because I donât know that so many kids could have connected with him if heâd âonlyâ been the funny one. I donât know that my youngest sister could have connected with him if heâd âonlyâ been the funny one, and I wonder if maybe the guy in the video connected with him for something other than âjustâ being the funny one.
Again, I donât know for a fact which version the guy saw. My observations are just restricted to the 2003 because, TV Tropes aside, 2003 is the main one I have familiarity with, and barring a few issues from the City at War arc of the Mirage comics, the only one I was familiar with at the time I wrote these notes.
But I do think itâs very interesting that he picks the guy who, at least in the version I watched, is brilliant in that he possesses a lot of natural talent in one area, but what he really wants to do is draw comics, possibly become a superhero. Mikey is constantly reading comics, watching old movies, quotes these movies in some episodes, is able to draw connections between an old Silver Sentry comic and use it to figure out how to beat Amanda, the daughter of Battling Bernice and Doctor Dome, is mentioned in supplementary material to draw his own comics, and even has some featured in bonus material like the âTurtle Powerâ book. (Really, if I were to write a 2003 Mikey plot, it would probably be about him going through the process of writing and maybe even trying to publish his own comic book and how being a mutant turtle affects how he has to go about that.)Â
So I have to wonder if part of Mikeyâs appeal with non-child crowds is because in some ways, heâs a kind of wish-fulfillment for people who arenât necessarily doing what they want to do. He isnât necessarily doing what he wants to do, at least not in the order he wants. Heâs more of an artist first, ninja second, which is probably some of where his seeming âbrilliant but lazyâ presentation around ninjitsu comes from. His interest is in creating his comics, so more of his stuff is configured around that, with the ninjitsu being something he enjoys, but not on the same level as his comic stuff.
But I do wonder if the guy role-playing the therapist had been more familiar with TMNT, if maybe they could have explored that a bit more. Granted, the point was to funnel him into an appropriate career choice, and I am not a career counselor, but who knows. At the same time, my cohort seemed to think I was weird for an analysis I gave of Leo in response to a question about what cartoon character you relate to at that moment and why, so maybe thatâs just one of those questions you arenât really supposed to answer except why would you ask it if that were the case?? So maybe not.o
#apologies for the dig on beauty and the beast 2017#it was just the most obvious example i could think of#classroom notes#rin overanalyzes stuff#michelangelo#tmnt 2003#teenage mutant ninja turtles#career counseling#i did not like that class#but it did lead to this analysis being made so.....#2003 mikey is my little sister's favorite#mikey is the audience surrogate for frustrated teens/adults being funneled into careers they don't want#except he's less frustrated and more just less interested#outwardly at least#but yeah. this post is a thing#character analysis#since one of my most long-standing interests is character analysis.....#yup#long post#rin rambles
