Each week, I ask some informal questions of an author. Their answers can be as short or as long as they like. They can answer all or none, or just ignore my emailsโ€ฆ
This time, I am absolutely thrilled to be spending just 5 minutes with New York Times No1 best-selling author E. K. Johnston. Her book Star Wars: Ahsoka remains one of my favourite books.

Thank you for my spot on the tour, for my copy of the book, and for your continued patience while I'm dealing with health issues. I very much appreciate your understanding. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช As usual, I found the authorโ€™s style of writing took me straight to the locations as if I was experiencing everything myself, fully immersed in the creepy story. While definitely a slow burner, I believe the creepiness and constant sense of foreboding would be ruined if things rattled along at a faster pace. The authorโ€™s books are very different from my normal genres to read, and they a good thing because it had a greater effect on me as I read. Overall, I think this is the perfect book to introduce the reader to the author and Iโ€™m happy to recommend it to any reader of modern horror and atmospheric drama. I gave Fellstones, by Ramsey Campbell, five stars, and canโ€™t wait to see what he comes up with next. #ad #gifted #fellstones #ramseycampbell #flametreepress #randomthingstours #horror #atmosphericthriller #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClG6AnmLtm4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you for my spot on the tour, and for your patience while Iโ€™m dealing with health issues. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช I wasnโ€™t aware of the Tom Harper mystery series before this tour, but I will make an effort to read them all as this is a brilliant book! I felt fully enveloped in the 1916 setting such was the authorโ€™s skill at describing the environment and characters. The story was intriguing and a pleasure to read Tom Harper is reliable, resilient, and professional, tangled between the office admin of a senior officer and the compulsion to carry out investigations, all while worrying about his wife Annabelโ€™s worsening dementia. Each character was relatable and entirely credible, especially Brigadier Fox, who despite his being an officer, I liked. The historical research carried out by the author was meticulous and evident on every page; the dialogue, personalities, policing methods, the Great War, all felt so realistic that I could visualise each scene as it happened. Overall, Iโ€™m so happy I read this book and will be reading the series in due course. I would recommend this to any reader of historical or wartime fiction, with the caveat that you should read the whole series if only for better backstory and context. I gave A Dark Steel Death, by Chris Nick son, five stars. #ad #gifted #adarksteeldeath #chrisnicksonauthor #severnhouse #severnhousepublishers #RandomThingsTours #mystery #ww1 #historical fiction #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjiCpDtIHCx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you for including me on the tour and for my copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช What can I say about this book without giving too much away? It was simply brilliant! The authorโ€™s skill at storytelling, while also leading me up Misdirection Street and back down Red Herring Avenue, is obvious throughout. The pace of the story felt about right and quite familiar given that this is the fifth thriller featuring Detective Madison Harper. I like Madison; determined, unswerving, loyal, and troubled by the revelation that this investigation may be connected to an old case conducted by her own special agent father, but above all resilient. If you are in trouble, you want her on your side. Other likeable characters are her Son Owen, best friend and partner Nate, and her father. If I say much more Iโ€™ll ruin the read for others so suffice to say that I think this is an improvement on the excellent book four, and probably the best in the series so far. I am happy to reverie this book, but I think you will get better backstory and context by reading the dried in order. I gave Catch Her Death, by Wendy Dranfield, five stars. #ad #gifted #catchherbreath #wendydranfield #thriller #bookouture #mystery #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiiqY7xrGrj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you for my spot on the tour and for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช Iโ€™m officially a Ruth Heald fan. I havenโ€™t read a book of hers but I didnโ€™t immediately like, and Iโ€™m happy to report that The Nanny is no exception. This tense psychological thriller hooked itโ€™s claws into me before I had finished the prologue and didnโ€™t let me go until my Kindle flipped the last page. The story felt so raw in places; a missing infant is right up there with the worst things possible to happen. Flicking back and forth between Hayleyโ€™s time as a new nanny, and years later working in a university, trying to keep her past firmly in the past, until someone asks a question. I couldnโ€™t work Hayley out for a while but still found myself empathising with her even though the story, as it progressed, made it clear that she was still in contention as the guilty party. There were other possibilities and I could almost sense the author offering each as if she was saying, โ€œBut what about this one, hmmm?โ€ There is a wealth of well written, three dimensional characters who all had their parts to play. None gave me the sense that they were superfluous or distracting from the story. Some were likeable while others could be kindly referred to as disagreeable. Youโ€™ll make you own minds up iโ€™m sure. Overall, this was a belter of a read. The tension was notching up as the story inexorably twisted and wound towards the big reveal. I got it completely wrong, but was happy that the author had kept me guessing. Would I recommend this book? Yes of course, but I will extend that to any of the authors books. I gave The Nanny, by Ruth Heald, five stars. #ad #gifted #TheNanny #RuthHeald #Bookouture #psychologicalthriller #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiWHmX6oQHI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you for my spot on the tour, and for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช This introductory guide to class and how it affects our social structures, is brilliantly illustrated by award winning illustrator and writer Danny Noble. Dr Laura Harvey and Dr Sarah Leaney, both sociologists at the University of Brighton, take us through a summary of class and how out affects our every day lives, from social standing to employment and housing. I found it to be most informative in areas I either didnโ€™t know or had all but forgotten about. While it is in no way a definitive examination of class, it is a great introduction for anyone interested in the subject. The different aspects of class were nearly separated into their own chapters which were easy to follow. The illustrations added to the points made in the text, offering a visual repentance of each topic. To be honest I enjoyed reading this book, although it should be said that you donโ€™t need to read it in one sitting. It is perfect for dipping in and out of, in any order you choose. Overall, I would recommend this to everyone because there are many effects of class that we are blind to. Thank you for my spot on the tour and for the copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช This was a surprising book for me as I wasnโ€™t sure the crossed genres would work; part science fiction and part murder mystery. But what I found was a meld that worked perfectly, which is down to the skill of the author.ย  I love a good whodunnit and this didnโ€™t disappoint in the least.ย  The characters were nicely introduced and I particularly liked Hattie, strong, determined, and independent. I like the growing trend of strong leading female characters who can become role models for readers. This locked in mystery held my attention from beginning to end,ย and while I like to try and work out who the baddies are, this kept me guessing and getting it wrong every time.ย  Overall,ย  I think this was a very well written, enjoyable, book which I am happy to recommend to any readers of science fiction or murder mysteries.ย I gave Mortal Mission, by Pip Skinner,ย five starsย and look forward to reading more from her in the future. #ad #gifted #mortalmission #pipskinner #lovebookstours #murdermystery #sciencefiction #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChluivpI3f7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I must apologise for the late review due to several trips to hospital this week messing with my routine. Thank you to The Book Network for my spot on the tour and for the copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. Now, it should be said that Iโ€™m not normally drawn by the โ€™magickyโ€™ side of Marvel despite loving Doctor Strange. Scarlet Witch left me a little deflated so I wasnโ€™t entirely sure what to expect. Then I saw Agatha Harkness (the best part of WandaVision) was in the story so I read on. What I found was a great bond between the principle characters which was refreshing in an otherwise male dominated Marvel universe. Most of the characters were new to me as my knowledge of Marvel is mainly based on the MCU and not the comics, but the clever introductions of each, without information overload, didnโ€™t distract from the plot and skilful storytelling of the author. Overall, I found the story engaging and I read it in one sitting. I gave Sisters of Sorcery, by Marsheila Rockwell, four stars. #ad #gifted #sistersofsorcery #marsheilarockwell #aconytebooks #marvel #marvelents #review #thebooknetwork #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChlpL-oIb-o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Pashley โญโญโญโญโญ Iโ€™m so happy to share my thoughts on Ravenous as part of the blog tour hosted by Random Things Tours. Thank you for my spot on the tour and for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช I should say that the blurb had me hooked,ย  but it still didnโ€™t prepare me for how brilliant this book was to read. Set not all that long after the reign of fear created by Jack The Ripper, this new set of murders appear to be intended as retribution for some wrongdoing on the part of the victims. I found the story eerily compelling almost immediately. The beautifully described scenes, even the horrific scenes, made it very easy to visualise the story as if acted out in front of me. The wealth of characters were a joy to meet and get to know. Even the wrongโ€™uns. I think that Ada would be most readers' favourite character; an independent, strong, driven woman in a predominantly patriarchal society. Women can't even vote at the time of the story. Studying to become a doctor would make her a target for vitriol from men and women alike, but none of this would put her off her chosen profession.ย  I found myself feeling for the fragility of her father, while admiring the grandfather's standard and bearing of a military man. There are many supporting characters who I really liked, including Milly and Rory. There were also the necessary characters I took on instant dislike to. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the read which kept me guessing, and made me suspect even the nicest of characters. This was a book that maintained a great pace throughout which was then cranked up toward the end. If I go into any further detail, I'm sure I will give something away, so I'll stop. Suffice to say I recommend this book to readers of psychological thrillers and historical fiction alike. I gave Ravenous, by H.N. Thanks to Anne at Random Things Tours for my spot on the tour and for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช I had been looking forward to reading this book as the synopsis looked brilliant. What I found was a great example of Scandinavian Noir which held my attention from start to finish. This is book two and while I always like to read a series in order, I didnโ€™t feel I had missed out on anything that could affect this book with TBR exception of backstory. The story held a good pace throughout, which then picked up at the same rate as the tension as it wound its way to the inevitable conclusion. I say inevitable, I didnโ€™t have it all worked out prior to the reveal. The authorโ€™s writing style and descriptions of the environment made it easier to picture each scene. Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I love this! The characters are rich and beautifully developed, and while already established in book one, they were a pleasure to get to know here. Jensen is driven, and not afraid to step on the toes of DI Henrick Jungerson, with whom sheโ€™s shares some personal history. They can make a formidable team if theyโ€™re put their minds together. Overall, this was a pleasure to read, and is another example of a book inspiring me to visit another party of the world in my campervan. I recommend this book to any readers of Scandinavian Noir, or even just a great crime thriller, with the caveat to read them in order for much better context and character development. I gave The Girl In The Photo, by Heidi Amsinck, five stars, and look forward to reading more about Jensen and Henrik. #ad #gifted #THEGIRLINTHEPHOTO #heidiamsinck #muswellpress #RandomThingsTours #nordicnoir #scandinaviannoir #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookblog #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic # #goodreadschallenge2022 (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChK953MrMj3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thanks for my spot on the tour, and for the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช When you know its written by Lisa Regan you know itโ€™s a good book before you even read the blurb. This thriller grabbed my attention and held on tightly throughout, and while it is book fifteen in the Josie Quinn series, you can read it perfectly well as a standalone. There are mentions of previous occurrences but it doesnโ€™t the anything away from the story. That said, I would recommend you read the series in order of only for better context and backstory. Then youโ€™ll have read fourteen other brilliant books too. Bonus! I really like Josie and Noah, and was happy to see theyโ€™d finally made it to their honeymoon. A bit of an extreme return to normal for them though, but they didnโ€™t even miss a beat; they just got straight on with things. The story was exciting to read, fast paced, and compelling. This one of those books that makes you forget household chores, eating, and even sleeping. I was up way to late but it was totally worth it. The story built the tension steadily and although I thought I had it all worked out, I was impressed by the twists and quite happy to have been wrong. Overall, I think this is the best book that I have read in the Josie Quinn series, and it has prompted me to go back to book one . Iโ€™m happy to recommend this to any reader of quality thrillers, and I have given Local Girl Missing, by Lisa Regan, five stars. #ad #gifted #localgirlmissing #lisaregan #bookouture #bookouturecrime #mystery #thriller #detectivejosiequinn #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChKGQ5Sr3Pn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thanks to Anne at Random Things Tours for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช As police procedurals go, the author gets the right balance of actually catching bad guys with the hours of hard police work and investigation that goes with it. As a standalone novel this works just fine, but for better context and backstory I would recommend reading the whole series. You'll thank me later. While I couldn't call it fast paced, and that is no criticism, the story sets the right tone and flows nicely. The characters are entirely credible and, having read the previous book in the series, it felt like I was visiting old friends. The team are great and work so well together. Their camaraderie felt real and made them all the more likeable. I have always liked Mark Turpin, this flawed, determined, fiercely protective man, juggling his home life with the demands of police work. I did particularly like how his character develops more with each book. Overall, this was an enjoyable read which I'm happy to recommend to readers of police procedurals, crime thrillers, and of course DS Mark Turpin fans. Thank you for my spot on the tour and for a cope of the book in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช How do you start a book and grab your audience, especially as a debut author? Your main character has murdered one person, and her ex sits with her gun pointed at his head, all live streamed on The Hive. I must admit the pace of the beginning was breathtaking and set the tone for the rest of the story which transports the reader back one year to detail how their relationship began, ended, and the descent into the situation we found at the start. I didnโ€™t completely like Charlotte, but her strength and determination to tell the story of her toxic relationship with Lincoln, more than made up for that. I did like โ€™the sisterhoodโ€™ and the bond between them since childhood. That kind of camaraderie is a rare thing. I syrongly disliked Lincoln, and the skill of the author in making me think of how I would vote for his fate was disturbing and brilliant in equal measure. Overall, this is a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading, and cannot recommend enough to any readers, but especially those who like revenge thrillers. I gave The Hive, by Scarlett Brade, five stars and look forward to reading her next book. #ad #gifted #thehive #scarlettbrade #Zaffre #randomthingstours #revengethriller #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgzCOzNrA7n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

As always, thank you for my spot on the tour, and for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช I do like a good dystopian story and this is as dark as they get. The author paints a bleak picture of the future, and makes it feel so plausible, so real, that it kept me up late last night contemplating life, the universe, and everything... ย I do that sometimes. Like many readers, I try to put myself into the story in reading. Iโ€™m not sure how well I would do in Akaraโ€™s world. I felt a whole range of real emotions as I read the book. The descriptions, the landscape, the harsh environment, were described so clearly that it was easy to visualise the ruined earth. Overall, I think this is one of the best post-apocalyptic books I have read, certainly in the last couple of years, and it is certainly a book I am happy to recommend to any readers of post-apocalyptic/dystopian science fiction. I gave My Name Is Ten, by Colleen McMahon, five stars, and canโ€™t wait to read more from her. #ad #gifted #mynameisten #colleenmacmahon #blogtour #randomthingstours #mystery #cult #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgx1bJdIirg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Many thanked for my spot on the tour and for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. ๐— ๐—ฌ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ช For starters this is a Will Carver book so I was expecting great things. And thatโ€™s exactly what he delivered. This was a slick, twisted book that left me horrified, shocked, amused, confused, and exhausted by the time I reached the end. What a roller-coaster. Told in three parts, from the perspectives of five main characters, all very different, finding themselves on a London train carriage. Their individual stories seemed unconnected, but the author skilfully began weaving them together as I felt myself being drawn in, causing a certain amount of introspection. It examines free will and fate, or destiny, prejudices, good and evil, and faith. Overall, this book made me feel it was written just for me. I canโ€™t begin to describe how it had left me feeling, but it will remain with me for a long time. It is definitely in my top ten reads of 2022. I gave The Daves Next Door, by Will Carver, five stars. #ad #gifted #thedavesnextdoor #willcarver #orenda #randomthingstours #thriller #fate #freewill #booklover #bookstagrammers #johnsbookshelf #bookstabloggers #bookreader #blogtour #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookshelf #bookaddict #igreads #bookblog #readabook #johnsbookshelfblogs #bookaholic #fortheloveofbooks #goodreadschallenge2022 #bookpost #blogpost #johnsbookshelfreviews #honestreviewsonly (at Southampton, England, U.K.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgmKnOYrzdG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
