The thing is, relationships are entirely context-dependent. As Magnus canon stands, John and Gerry see each other and go ‘same [being manipulated by an authority figure into gaining supernatural abilities and losing too much of your humanity to ever go back by the time you figure it out]’ and enjoy the bonds of their friendship for the 20 minutes it lasts. Also as it stands, John and Martin spend a few months as coworkers and spent 11 months watching and orbiting each other as they spend all their time at the archives trying to help each other in the ways that they can. But, I’m just saying that if John had met Gerry first, things might have gone differently
