TaserTorch Fake Dating Paranormal AU
“So……there’s this ghost couple living in my apartment and they’re extremely invested in my love life and to keep them from hounding me……I may have told them we’re dating.”
Johnny’s eyebrows hit the ceiling.
“There’s a lot to unpack here,” he began, eying Darcy with both concern and intrigue in his eyes.
She braced for him to ask if she was on drugs or a science bender. The whole premise sounded insane spoken out loud.
Johnny just sighed and plopped himself down, motioning her to a chair across from him. (Points for not being creepy, she thought).
“First off, tell me about the ghosts. I do believe you, by the way. Sue and I both can see and hear spirits. It’s one of our many quirks.”
“You never told me that!” she exclaimed.
“And you never told me you could either until today,” Johnny shrugged. “I didn’t want to give you any more reasons to be weirded out by me.”
“That would be a little hypocritical of me,” Darcy admitted. “We’re both pretty weird.”
“True. Now tell me about your ghosts.”
“Well, they’re British and they knew Howard Stark. I love their accents.”
“Proper ghosts, then,” Johnny acknowledged with a grin.
“Oh, very,” Darcy confirmed. “He makes the most outraged expressions when I make tea in my sloppy American way. His wife is super sweet and quiet, but tries not to act horrified at my mess.”
“How did they end up at your place?” Johnny asked.
“There was too much bad energy at Stark’s mansion, which makes sense, and their old cottage got razed decades ago. They drifted around for awhile before they decided my townhouse was the perfect spot. They’d been there about 15 years when I moved in. Now, they’re dead set on ghostly matchmaking.”
Darcy made a forlorn face and Johnny stifled an amused snort.
“So, how long would this counterfeit courtship last?” He asked, trying to sound casual.
“Probably a few months, then we stage a dramatic breakup, and I act super heartbroken and then they’ll leave me alone for another year or so. Sound like a plan?”
“As long as you don’t use cheating as the reason we split,” Johnny said firmly. “I may be many things, but a cheater is not one of them, even if it’s pretend. Also, I’d need a batch of your rocky road brownies to sweeten the deal.”
Darcy stuck out her hand.
“Deal.”
Johnny shook it.
“Deal.” he echoed. “When do we start?”

Mystery Exchange Round-up (Glenlivet 18 Year, Johnnie Walker Green Label, Glenmorangie 18 Year, Balvenie 17 Year Peated Cask, Glenfarclas 21 Year)
Review by: TOModera So as most people know by now, I kinda went on a bender on my vacation to the UK. 50 whisky samples in 15 days was both awesome and completely stupid, as I’m on medication where I’m not really supposed to have more than 4 oz. of hard liquor per week. None the less, I came back, cut back, and was doing well (other than one trip to my favourite pub in Toronto for a couple more…

ok but can we please have an umbrella academy x schitt’s creek AU. we here the hargreeves lose all their money and have to relocate to a tiny town. if you could write that that’d be great lmao
This is SUCH a big brained idea thank you omg
So I think relocating is great but it’d be equally hilarious if the Hargreeves also owned Schitt’s Creek. Klaus went on a bender one day with Roland and Roland just signed a fucking contract with him that said he was co-owner of Schitt’s Creek with David
When the Hargreeves pop up and Klaus pulls out his own deed, Johnny’s eyes almost pop out of his head and Roland goes, “Oh yeah, I forgot I did that. Fun times.”
But Klaus gets along SO well with David that it doesn’t matter lmao I feel like they just talk for ages and Patrick and Stevie are sitting there amused as they banter back and forth
Also Alexis’s kidnapping stories? 100% has one with each and every single Hargreeves sibling. One day she and Five get kidnapped and he’s trying to figure out how to get them both out of there and Alexis just grabs her hair clip and unlocks the trunk that they’re stuck in and Five is like “.........................................have you ever worked for the Commission?”
Them trying to work just like...normal jobs would be hilarious. Allison joins the Jazzagals and it’s not until like a month later when Bob kindly tells her that she’s behind on her rent that she finds out that the Jazzagals is not a paid position.
Diego tries to be a private eye with Luther. I mean, they have an office but there’s not much to do in Schitt’s Creek so they kind of just sit at the Rose Bud motel and wait to see if there’s anything sketchy going on with guests while Stevie roasts them from her place at her desk and Johnny desperately tries to get them to leave.
Ben is still a ghost but he’s manifested all the time because of Klaus so he’s just there chilling lmao. Ronnie actually really likes hanging out with him and one of her favorite things to do is to go, “My best friend died about 15 years ago” and when the person she’s talking to says they’re sorry she goes, “Why? He’s right there” and Ben will pop up and they’ll scream and she finds it hilarious every time.
Viktor joins the local government and oh my god, they all find him delightful because whenever a town hall meeting is being particularly annoying and people are channeling their inner-Pawnee-citizens, Viktor will 1000% turn into the White Violin and that shuts up people really quickly
I also feel like Five unironically runs for office and people are really like, “aw, look at this 14-year-old so involved in government this is adorable” and then he fucking eviscerates his opponent while drinking some black coffee and everyone leaves the debate slightly scared
Actually you know what they ALL run because they’re petty and they want to beat each other. Allison’s posters are all “I heard a rumor that I’m the best candidate” and so forth, Luther tries bribing people with donuts, Klaus has absolutely no game plan and forgets that he’s running like 5 days in lmao. It’s an absolute nightmare and in the end none of them win which is honestly probably for the better
Janie’s follower celebration - want one?
#schitt's creek#the umbrella academy#tua headcanons#janie has headcanons#7kfollowerscelebration#sorry this went a bit off the rails and probably wasn't what you meant asdfjkl#b99detectivealpaca

Am I more scared of confrontation or climbing out a window?
Tari was not expecting to have to answer that question. Well, not today at least. But it’s how she found herself using air bending to glide down the side of her building.
It’s really not her fault she was in this situation. Sure, she could tell her friends about her identity, but that would mean losing them forever – even before she could actually be good at being who she’s supposed to be. But she woke up at seven in the morning to avoid interacting with Johnny and Doyoung. Unfortunately, she woke up to the sounds of them bickering about coffee and her secret escape plan failed.
Taking a deep breath, she recalled her years training in the Air Temple Island. Out of all the elements, she used air bending skills the least – only keeping the element of using her breath to keep her warm (which was as easy as just concentrating on her breath). She felt her lungs feel inflated as she concentrated on air bending; the feeling of weightlessness throughout her body as she flexes her fingers. The invisible light weight of the air she was manipulating fled into her fingers, to her fingertips and to her feet.
With her exhale, she let this power help her glide down the building slowly and calmly. As soon as she could, she jumped and landed gently on the ground to avoid the thumb of her feet getting anyone’s attention. This is when she thanks Raava that she’s the Avatar…even if she wouldn’t be in this position if she weren’t.
Quickly scanning the street which was practically empty, she set off for the ports.
“You do not need this.” Johnny emphasized, trying to grab the cup of coffee from Doyoung’s grasp. “You need to sleep. How many hours did you sleep last night?”
The insomniac was quick to defend himself. “More than you!”
“It was just tonight,” The non-bender groaned, acknowledging he had only slept for two hours last night as he anxiously fretted over his investigation. “Plus, I need this more because I have a major investigation today.”
Doyoung was never a morning person. He either is grumpy or refuses to get out of bed. “Make your own!” He whined, pulling away the cup from Johnny and taking a big sip. “Now you can’t have it.”
“You act like I’m saliva conscious.” Johnny provoked, wiggling his eyebrows. A stare down commenced – quickly leaving Johnny to groan out of desperation for a caffeinated drink and admit defeat.
As Doyoung treasured the bitter taste of coffee, Johnny was making his own cup of coffee. “So, what’s your investigation today?” Doyoung was itching for something to do. Ever since the gyms got vandalized or destroyed and benders have been alienated, he hasn’t had many tasks – Johnny constantly getting the groceries far before Doyoung could even think about leaving the house and no job to get too. On top of that, his roommate who hasn’t seemed to be affected by the alienation is constantly gone. He wanted to join Johnny – he’s sick of spending all day watching television and calling friends to check if they were okay.
However, Johnny wanted to make sure Doyoung doesn’t lose his trust in his roommate. He’s gone through so much, and if he finds out one of his best friends cannot be trusted – Johnny can’t imagine what would happen. “Uhm, it’s not too important.”
Doyoung raised his eyebrows, annoyed. “What happened to being major?” For someone so great at telling stories, Johnny couldn’t stutter out an excuse as fast as he would want. “Is it just so I could’ve given you my coffee?” The reporter quickly nodded, taking that as an excuse to cover up. “Do you think I could join you for today?” Johnny swears he’s never heard Doyoung’s voice so small.
Not only is Johnny investigating Tari, but he is concerned that Doyoung will only be either triggered or more in danger as he walks in the public. Concern fills Johnny’s heart. He knows the dangers Doyoung may face if he gets identified as a bender. Honestly, Johnny’s just glad bending can be hidden – but Doyoung was on the news when the bending gyms were attacked. Johnny couldn’t risk Doyoung being identified and hurt under his watch. “Yeah, sure, but I think I might take the day off.” Johnny excused, itching his neck awkwardly. Disappointed in his lack of availability to investigate Tari, he is wondering if he could actually tell Doyoung what was going on. In the end, he decided not to.
“I mean, can you just stay over then?” Johnny saw the pain and the loneliness deep in Doyoung’s eyes. He couldn’t leave him. He knew he made the right choice of hiding his suspicion of Tari. “I don’t want to be alone.” His voice was as small as an ant; quiet and fleeting. Johnny gave him a small smile, nodded, and hid his suspicion as he pulled out his favorite video games.
The Air Temple Island was full of orange. It was calm and serene - not including the kids playing Air Ball or using air scooters in the corner. It was always peaceful to be here - from being surrounded by water (which always calmed Tari down) to being surrounded by blue sky and a beautiful temple, but Tari was feeling nervous.
The last time Tari was on this island was two years ago when she first moved to Sooman. It was a formal visit, having to discuss her plans on living in Sooman while continuing to do her Avatar duties. To this day, Tari is proud of her ability to have convinced Tenzin, Lin, and Sukiara to allow her to only train once a month. Of course, she’s seen them outside of this island – she looks at them like role models. They were her trainers at one point. But this island is nothing but anxiety for her.
Fire bending was never her forte. It was the reason why she moved on to airbending even if the main thing she mastered while training with her fire bending master were the basics and the Sun Warrior techniques, like the dancing dragon. Otherwise, she can be considered a rookie at best. But Sukiara realized that Tari was getting older and preferred that Tari was a jack of all trades rather than a master of two. As Tari was born a water-bender, she had to learn bending in the order of water, earth, fire, and then air.
Water came natural to her – like breathing. She was showed as skilled and masterful within days of her first bending lesson, which is partly how they identified her as a water bender. Within two years – at the age of six, she mastered water bending with the help of a water bending master. The year following was the year she ‘relaxed’ according to all the other mentors. But in reality, Sukiara took her away to an uninhabited island and trained her in blood bending; something Katara has banned due to being the darkest bending of all. Tari fully agreed with that statement once she mastered blood bending – it took her a year to learn that singular sub-bending, which was the longest it took her to learn any water bending technique. It was a year of pain, of emotional turmoil, of trauma. Sometimes, Tari still gets nightmares of what she did while training.
Earth was more difficult. It took her three years to become somewhat advanced. Tari was evasive and occasionally passive – nothing like the personality of a traditional earth bender. They’re direct, firm, and stand their ground. But Tari somewhat mastered it. She learnt from Lin and her mother Toph. She can sense things with her eyes closed and do metal bending, lava bending – whatever. But it never came naturally. She still struggles with the form.
Fire? It was her most difficult element. She entered the temple at ten years old, but left at fifteen. Sukiara explained to her that every Avatar has a lack of affinity for at least one other element. Usually, it’s the opposite element than the one they’re born in – but it largely depends on the personality. Fire required precision, intensity, aggression. Most moves are offensive – minimal were defensive. Tari cannot lightning generate nor can she do anything more than a proficient fire bender (other than her masterful knowledge of the Dragon Dance and traditional Sun Warrior techniques). It’s noteworthy to mention the one move she learnt with absolute ease was lightning redirection, but even that was a move inspired by the flow and adaptability of water benders.
Sukiara knew Air would come much easier to Tari. It suited her. Her guide believed that Tari was a perfect combination of the traditional traits of a water bender and an air bender. She was calm, evasive, defensive, adaptable, peaceful, flexible, kind, controlled. Additionally, Tari’s Avatar Guide was Aang. She would be the closest to him.
Stepping off the White Lotus’s Flying Bison named ‘Yip’, a 15-year-old Tari was welcomed by her previous-life’s family. She’s heard about them and had vague memories of them from her previous life. She remembered talking to Aang as a child and Aang telling her stories about them, like a parent reading a child stories to sleep. It’s not usual for the Avatar Guide to appear for non-teachable circumstances, but Aang couldn’t stay away from his successor – someone who was scared and someone he saw a lot of himself in. She wanted to run away, like he did. She was told early, like he was. He saw her and didn’t see the Avatar, but a kid who had no choice.
Tenzin was bending down, but his eyes were full of sorrow. He is the oldest air bender alive and the only air bending master in the world. His eyes scanned the girl who his father’s memory resided in as this same girl clutched onto her wolf tightly, not wanting to let her animal guide go. His family and him greeted her with warm smiles and a formal bow - his pregnant wife Pema and his two young daughters were ecstatic for her arrival.
Out of all the masters, Tenzin was the first one to have kids. It made Tari relax. Maybe this time she wouldn’t be so alone.
“I swear, every time you’re on this island – I’m pregnant.” Pema laughed as Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo followed her ecstatically to give their honorary older sister a hug. Tari lived with them for two years – until Jinora was seven, Ikki was four, and Meelo was two.
Tari grinned widely, Ani following her closely behind while Sukiara stood solemnly behind Tari. She was never known for pleasantries after all. She hugged the family which she temporarily had – the first family she had since she was four. Unfortunately, she doesn’t see them often. They prefer spending their hours on their home island rather than the mainland of Sooman, while Tari does anything to avoid it.
The Avatar chuckled as her honorary siblings jumped on her – tackling her with hugs, “No, last time I was here, you talked about wanting another child.” She teased, “How are you? I missed you guys so much.”
Ikki started talking – a lot; telling Tari about her latest TV show to her latest celebrity crush, which happened to be Prince of Fire Nation Jaehyun Jung (who Tari didn’t want to mention was far too old for the seven year old). While this was happening, Meelo was mocking and imitating his sister, and Jinora was just rolling her eyes and chuckling like Tari and her mother.
A cough ended the reunion. While Meelo and Ikki still continued to talk, Tari and Sukiara’s attention was brought to Tenzin and Lin. Tenzin looked obviously annoyed and flustered, while Lin was smirking. Tari knew Lin must’ve brought something up about their previous relationship to have caused Tenzin to have his ears as bright as a tomato. Lin sent Tari a soft smile, before using her head to motion towards the back.
“Hey guys, I’ll leave Ani with you okay?” She wanted to keep them entertained, she loved seeing them happy and she knows how much Meelo loves Ani. “I’ll be right back. I just have to talk to your dad real quick.” Ikki and Meelo barely seemed affected by her notice; immediately running and replacing her presence with a dog. Tari gave Jinora a quick individual hug and a parting hug to Pema, before following Sukiara who had already started towards Tenzin and Lin.
Sukiara let out a soft chuckle, peeking her head over her shoulder to look at Tari. “They replaced you with your wolf in no time.” A harmless comment, Tari smiled. Sukiara was no enemy except for recent times. She raised and guided her growing up and hearing her say that was the first time she heard Sukiara made a joke since Tari moved to Sooman city.
Somehow, video games turned into a karaoke and homemade pizza night. Tari has yet to return home and every minute that passes, Johnny constantly wonders where she is. But, that was hidden under the screams of Doyoung and Johnny singing along to ‘Piano Man’ as they eat their unintentionally burnt, or as Johnny calls them “crispy”, homemade pizzas.
“Okay, okay, let’s play…” Johnny laughed, falling back onto the couch and searched through the streaming site for other songs. After four songs and a failed attempt at freestyle choreography, he was slightly out of breath. This may be the only time he wanted to be an air bender – he could literally expand his lungs with air just a little bit. “Ugh, I don’t know. Do you want to go back to vid-?”
“Can we go to the gym?” Doyoung interrupted him what seemed out of nowhere. Johnny noticed Doyoung started acting weird during the videogames, which was why Johnny changed the activities. “I want to go back.”
Johnny was speechless. Could it trigger him? Not only was the atmosphere for benders on the streets tense, but he’ll be back to where he was attacked. Could it make him worse off?
“Listen, I see your face – I know you don’t think it’s a good idea.” Doyoung was quick to explain his thoughts, “But, I need to be with peace with it. Maybe the reason I can’t sleep is because I keep seeing how it was while it was attacked. I keep remembering what happened when I was attacked.” He sighed, “If I can see it now, then it gives me a vision of it where yes, it’s in shambles. But at least I’m safe. And you’ll be with me. Tari would want me to do it.”
If it weren’t for his desperate tone of voice and his pleading eyes, Johnny wouldn’t have said yes.
“The government cannot make you do this and we haven’t done anything yet,” Lin informed, looking solemn as she stood with her arms crossed in the back corner of Tenzin’s personal office. Tenzin sat in the chair in the middle of the room with Tari in front of him, Sukiara standing behind Tari’s chair. “And we’re not planning to until we get your permission.”
“But they’re highly requesting to know which city the Avatar is located in, your identity, and your master levels in each element.” Tenzin sighed. He looked as if he was in between a rock and a hard place, as if it pains him to tell Tari this. “Mainly, they want to know if you are in Sooman so they can be aware, and they can then have you act as a model citizen and stop bending until this is all over.” Tenzin, as representative of the air nation in the Sooman Council, was one of the most influential governmental leaders – not only for his role, but also his legacy. He is seen as the second coming of Aang in non-Avatar form. However, he is also known as the only Air Bending master in the world and thus everyone knew he would know who the Avatar is.
Alternatively, Lin was the general of police and the daughter of Toph. She was widely known for her skills in earth bending and her reputation in the police force. However, everyone assumed the Avatar would learn from Toph. Which is true – Toph was Tari’s mentor, but Lin was her co-mentor per say. “We support you no matter what. This government can honestly go to hell.” Tenzin audibly groaned at this, rolling his eyes – annoyed at the attitude Lin has against the very government she works for. “This is your choice. Your identity. And the government isn’t forcing you out of it.”
Tari’s mind was running miles per minute. If she reveals her identity, it would be public knowledge. When this all blows over – if it all blows over, she wouldn’t be able to walk around in public unnoticed. She will be treated differently. She will lose the people she has in her life. This is the first time ever the government or a government has asked for her identity. The only time her identity was considered an ‘urgent’ matter was when Lin and Tenzin wanted to know how Tari wanted to be treated around Sooman.
Tenzin seemed to observe her anxiety – her fidgeting in the seat, her glances away from eye contact - “Honestly, just think about it. We have until tomorrow to tell him the news.”
Silence. Tari couldn’t respond. Her mind flew of images of her friends, of her bosses, of Hendery, of NCT. If her identity was shown, she wouldn’t be able to enter NCT without the spotlight on her. She knew she would become a political tool, she’ll be under a spotlight. Not to mention, this society was so against bending. What would happen to her?
Tenzin coughed. “Well?”
“May I go think alone?” The adults nodded but they didn’t complete the action before Tari sprinted out the familiar hallways. Tari couldn’t hear Lin chastise Tenzin for the way he presented the government’s request.
The familiar hallways eventually led her to her old temporary bedroom. When she was learning air bending, she stayed here if not the White Lotus island. She saw how it became a meditation area – mostly empty. The walls were now plain beige with stools placed on the rug in an organized manner. To be honest, it felt like she was confined. The walls were the government holding back benders and the fact her identity is so consuming and ruining her life. She wasn’t even old enough to want to be who she is. She wasn’t old enough to remember the legendary tales of Aang and Roku and Kyoshi, of Wan and Yangchen. She wasn’t old enough to be like her peers who desperately spoke about how ‘awesome’ it would be to be the Avatar when she was told of her responsibilities.
She wanted to be by the water. But, she didn’t want anyone to see her distress.
She heard a knock at the door as she stared hopelessly at the floor, continuing to bite her tongue to the point it bled. She didn’t want to heal it.
“My life isn’t mine, huh?” Tari asked, already knowing Sukiara is behind her. “It’s theirs, right?” She turned around. Tari’s ocean blue eyes staring at Sukiara’s icy cold ones, which only seemed to melt as Tari used her own words against her. “I need to give myself up. Give my life up. To keep everyone safe. If the government knows about me, maybe they’ll loosen up.”
Sukiara sighed, sitting beside her as elegantly as she can in her maxi dress the color of the ocean under the night sky. “Your life, yes, your duties – your purpose is for the people.” She started, her voice refuses to waver. Sukiara never wavered and never had a regret. She knew what she had to do, and everything she’s done has been to do it; to protect, guide, and help the Avatar. “But you’re basing that off maybe’s. I don’t think this is my decision, it’s yours. But, most Avatars get identified publicly.” Tari nodded solemnly, not questioning what is being said. She now has to deal with a difficult task – losing what…“You never were.” Sukiara reminded her, “And that is because of your parents.”
Sukiara took a photo out of her satchel. It was a photo from her bedroom on the White Lotus island. It was a postcard her parents sent her for her 18th birthday before she moved to Sooman. It was a photo of her mother, her father, her older brother, and the younger sister she never got to meet. She was always scared to write them back, but they wrote to her every day. It was Tari’s favorite photo of them; they all looked so happy. Her mother and father looked so in love with their life and always wrote about how proud they were of Tari.
“Your parents. They wanted you to make this choice.” Sukiara said. “No one has ever said anything because your parents demanded that your identity is your choice. Your purpose is for the people, but your identity is yours.” The guide’s voice was usually icy and sharp, but now it was like a river flowing on a calm day. “They said your identity was already chosen by destiny enough and the rest of your life should be yours. It’s your choice about this. Not anyone else’s.” Sukiara stood up and left her hand on Tari’s shoulder. “I know whatever your choice is, you’ll make them proud.”
Johnny saw Doyoung’s stark face express the five stages of grief within a couple of minutes. But it ended with a look of determination. The same place he basically resided in – the place he’d visit daily and spend hours among hours with friends, colleagues, and anyone was destroyed. This place represented him; once widely accepted and in fact loved by many of the community – no matter their background, but now destroyed and alienated. People can only silently support it unless they want to be attacked.
The ghosts of the crowds of this area seemed to walk around them in what can be comparable to a deserted wasteland. It used to be full of benders and non-benders, smiling and celebrating life. It felt so strange that this area is only five minutes away from the mainstreet.
“I can’t be silent anymore.” Doyoung mumbled under the harsh and tense atmosphere of the block. The ruins of the gyms stood before them. The once colorful area was darkened by ash, debris, and graffiti. “I can’t be that air bending monk who just wants peace when the world is in chaos.” Doyoung was on the verge of tears, his voice cracking. “Johnny, we have to help. I don’t care what Tari says, but I’m ready to fight.”
Johnny didn’t want to say yes, but didn’t want to reject his desire either. “Let’s wait for Tari, yeah?”
Tari continued to sit in the room – now for the third hour, just staring at the ground. Sukiara’s words gave her more to think about. What would her family want? But now, Ani’s with her. Ani, as her animal guide, can sense when Tari is in distress. So, the grey wolf curled itself next to her knee.
She’s usually never alone with her thoughts, even when she meditates. As the Avatar, she’s the bridge between the Spirit World and the Human World. As a result, once she meditates – she’s there. Of course as a kid, before she learnt how to properly meditate – she never managed to get into the marvelous Spirit World – a mystical forest that parallels the human world but remains uninhabited by humans. Except for one, of course, but General Iroh was more spiritual than an average human. He was delighted when he heard of the news of Sooman City and even more when he heard about the shop Tari works at. Tari’s not going to lie and say that he’s not one of the only reason she frequently visits the Spirit World. But, there’s more to it.
The Spirit World is beautiful and dangerous. It’s mystical and something Tari wishes she can capture accurately with words but the beauty defeats all the words she can think of. The danger, however, is extreme. The danger of spirits was the reason the two worlds were separated in the first place, and before it was separated – the reason humans were granted the ability to bend the elements.
But as she refuses to meditate now, she is now alone with her thoughts. Each thought echoing against the wall and reverberating back towards her. The only sound in the room was the soft combination of breathing of Ani and Tari, with occasional purrs coming from Ani as Tari strokes her out of habit.
“Tenzin, I haven’t made a decision yet.” Tari commented, catching a peek of orange robes from her peripheral vision.
“I look that young?” A shocked joking voice exclaimed. Tari turned around, seeing Aang – who was grinning at her. “I’m here to talk to you.”
At the sight of him, Tari felt her voice tremble. “I’m so, so, sor-.”
“No.” Aang said, her Avatar guide appearing in front of her. “Don’t apologise. You have not disappointed me or Roku, not gonna lie – maybe Kyoshi,” Aang gawked at his successors reaction, “I’m kidding. You haven’t disappointed any of us. Listen, as you know, I can’t be here for long so I’ll tell you a story.”
And a story he told. A story of his own running away from his identity, but how it was right. About how if he hadn’t ran away, he would’ve never been able to stop the war. How time comes when it comes and it will be obvious when it will. He told her of the days he spent wondering if he was worth being the Avatar and if he really was deserving. He told her about running away from his identity. “None of us were perfect, Tari. But the one thing that is; time and your gut. Time and your gut will tell you when it’s right. And when you fear your gut was wrong, when you regret your decision – that decision will only help you become the future you. it’ll help inform your future decisions. So trust it.”
And he faded into thin air, a grin on his face as he wished Tari good luck. A sense of warmth radiated throughout her body; comfort and home and a sense of validation.
With that, Tari knew what she had to do. With Ani following closely behind, Tari stormed into the office where Lin and Tenzin were obviously frustrating each other and declared she’ll keep her identity to herself. Sukiara swore this was the one time she’s ever seen Tari stand her ground like that.
The Avatar then turned to Sukiara,“Can I go home now?”
Sukiara nodded, checking the time on her phone. “We should take a boat back to Soo-.”
“No,” She smiled softly, biting her lip anxiously while gauging her mentor’s reaction. “My other home.”
With a wide grin, Sukiara happily nodded and prepapred for their journey back to the home of the Avatar; Bak Mei Island.

Do you think the Fantastic Four should be stronger? They used to be a dangerous force that could challenge the Avengers and X-Men while only having four members. Now they aren't a threat without Reed's intelligence. I personally believe they've become too reliant on Reed to save the day. The villains they face have gotten stronger but the team stagnated, especially poor Ben. I don't need them to be the strongest team, but they should be more powerful than they were when we left them.
The idea that the FF aren’t powerful is a misconception. I get that the Avengers and the X-Men are both more popular nowadays, but in-universe the Fantastic Four are widely acknowledged as the strongest, most experienced, and most powerful superteam around -- the “toughest superbeings on the planet,” according to Frank Castle, the Punisher, and multiversal badasses you never want to mess with in any reality according to the Exiles. They certainly are extremely effective even when Reed’s not around – he’s quit the team to be with his family on several occasions, you know, and even died for a while in the 1990s, and the team did just fine with Sue in charge. And also you are seriously underestimating how powerful, capable, and experienced Sue, Ben, and Johnny are. They are all, by far, the most experienced superheroes in the Marvel Universe – they do predate the Avengers and the X-Men by two years, you know. For a long while, they were the only superteam around. And they don’t rely too much on Reed’s intelligence – for one thing, Sue’s plenty smart on her own, and so is Valeria, who is smarter than her father. (Her hobbies include plotting world domination via the metric system (when she was two) and how to conquer the Kree Empire in her spare time as a 3yo. She can be a scary child.) And then there’s the Future Foundation, composed of Reed and Sue’s ~12 supergenius children, who together cured Ben when Reed had failed. The FF don’t need to rely on Reed’s intelligence, really they don’t.
And just…Sue, who is indisputably the most powerful member of the FF, can, on her own, take out the Avengers in approximately thirty seconds without breaking a sweat – and she’s done it more than once. She’s taken on Doom and the armies of Latveria singlehandedly – and won. She’s defeated Titania, Crusher Creel, and a mind-controlled Ben and Jen all at the same time, all on her own. Her forcefields are strong enough to withstand Thor’s thunder, and she’s held her own for a few moments against a Celestial, and they are colossally powerful. She’s defeated Wolverine – and easily at that. She’s knocked Namor, one of the strongest beings on the planet, to the floor with a single blow, and that was after maintaining a force field over an entire city for a day to stave off a war. She’s brought down an entire building on a tentacle monster that was trying to eat her daughter, and killed a member of the Brood who threatened her family with a sword she constructed from one of her forcefields. She’s been extensively trained in hand-to-hand by Iron Fist and she’s given even him a run for his money, so she can hold her own even without her powers – but, frankly, she’s always been capable of that. She can punch a hole through the Baxter Building. Supervillains throughout the Marvel U are terrified of her – she even made the Wizard, a seasoned supervillain, faint from sheer terror. She moonlights as a SHIELD agent because she’s great at infiltration and espionage. There’s also that universe (Marvel Adventures), where Sue became the leader of both the FF and the Avengers, let me just point out. She really doesn’t need Reed telling her what to do. She’s more than smart enough to figure it out on her own – in The Pine Barrens, actually, Reed is captured by some aliens, and he just knows that Sue will figure it out and rescue him, even though she has no idea he was captured or even that there are aliens in the woods. And she does. Don’t underestimate Sue’s intelligence or her abilities. Honestly, if you aren’t terrified of Sue and what she is capable of, you really haven’t been paying attention. She can be ruthless and she is powerful as hell and she saves the day more often than she doesn’t. And can I just point out -- someone’s in charge of the FF, but it isn’t Reed:
And then there’s Johnny – his Nova flame, for the record, is powerful enough to take out a small moon, just on its own. He’s taken out a significant chunk of the Annihilation Wave with a single Nova burst, and later – without Reed’s help or input, might I add – survived two years on his own in a Negative Zone prison, rallied the Light Brigade to his side, defeated Annihilus, took control of the Cosmic Control Rod, and became the leader of the Annihilation Wave himself. He also was instrumental in saving the Earth from Galactus at ~18 when the Watcher sent him on a dangerous mission through space to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier, without which the Earth would have been destroyed. He nearly died saving Glenville from an exploding nuclear bomb when he was 16 years old, and in Strange Tales has many adventures without any of the FF backing him up. He’s a very experienced, capable hero – he might joke around a lot, but he knows what he’s doing, he’s smart and capable, and he takes it seriously when people’s lives are on the line. He’s currently around 30, and he’s been a superhero since he was 15. He’s been a superhero longer than Spider-Man, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Ant Man, She-Hulk, Luke Cage, Daredevil…Johnny’s more experienced than any of them.
Ben, despite being less strong than the Hulk, is still one of the heaviest hitters on Earth, and you shouldn’t underestimate him. He’s progressed from nearly dying after a rocket crash to being able to jump out of a spaceship in low orbit without even feeling it. He’s plenty powerful – although granted Sue is more so nowadays, but I’m fine with that.
Reed, of course, could do one hell of a lot of damage if he ever wanted to – his intelligence is what makes him extremely dangerous.
But, uhhave you never heard of Franklin Richards? He is a mutant who is beyond Omega level and one of the most powerful beings – not humans, mind you, but beings – in the Marvel Universe. He’s at least as powerful as the Celestials, who are space gods. He is a reality bender who is so powerful he can create entire universes (he keeps one in his closet so he can play in it with Leech, his best friend, and is currently off recreating the multiverse with his dad -- he and Reed jointly created the entire Marvel Multiverse that exists today, which means that every Marvel character is now the in-universe creation of Reed and Franklin Richards). Franklin is also immortal and will survive the death of the universe. Fixing a sun for him is as easy as wishing it so, and he can turn off Black Bolt’s powers just by willing it. He’s defeated not one but THREE Celestials on his own -- which he did to save his father from being killed by them. When he was a 5yo boy, he was already powerful enough to defeat the devil Mephisto, who is the living embodiment of all evil and who even Doom had never been able to beat, and Franklin just vaporized Mephisto with a single sentence. Also…you know that he’s going to make Galactus, the biggest bad in the MU, who is a stand-in for God, his herald someday, yes? Franklin is extremely powerful, is what I’m saying. Almost absurdly so. There is little he cannot do.
I don’t know what comics you’ve been reading, but the FF are more than powerful enough, even without Reed in the mix. Franklin by himself is enough to make the FF the most powerful team there is, and you should never underestimate how smart and powerful his mom is.

The 15 Best Drinks-Focused TV Shows and What to Sip While Watching
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c3dd077f28e03c8a2ba6082cec12f56b/6067be7d2175bde2-44/s540x810/28347ac83bf3153fba7394c28cb4277616dc6a1a.jpg)
Binge-watching a favorite television show is a universal hobby, and that was true even before the pandemic. While we wouldn’t recommend binge drinking while doing so, pairing a can’t-miss series with a must-have drink is a natural combination. With moderation in mind, of course.
As it happens, many of the best television shows of all time are also the booziest. We’ve seen everything cross our screens at this point, from iconic television bars to cartoon characters who would handily drink anyone under the table — and even entire drink revolutions spawned by popular shows. The Cosmo, anybody?
Pull up your streaming service, find your favorite show below, and get ready to pop open a bottle or mix up some cocktails with these perfect TV-drink pairings.
15. ‘Succession’
Viewers of “Succession” were likely introduced to the idea of “hyper-decanting” (read: blending, as in, with a blender) your wine prior to serving. But beyond that questionable idea, the show has plenty to offer. “We think ‘Succession’ is the best show television has seen in a long time — from the acting, script, and the epic music, it’s a winning combination,” says Joseph Mintz, co-founder with Amanda Victoria of Siponey canned cocktails.
“Amanda is a huge fan of Scottish actor Brian Cox, who plays Logan Roy, and I would love to share a dram with Mr. Cox,” Mintz says. Not a bad idea, considering that Cox enjoys enduring internet fame for the video pronunciation guides for Scotch brands he made with Esquire. Pair with a hard-to-pronounce single-malt Scotch — only the best for the Roys!
14. ‘Dead to Me’
The Liz Feldman-produced dark comedy has gone through two seasons thus far, with a third en route. And while many shows have unofficial drinking games, “Dead to Me” and Netflix posted an official one before Season 2 dropped this spring. Highlights include drinking twice if someone drinks on screen, or finishing your drink if “Karen almost ruins everything” (trust us, it happens).
Wine is very much what’s being glugged on screen, though you’ll find a cast of characters willing to open a bottle of just about anything on this show. But for a pairing, go with a gluggable red or an orange wine, which gets name-dropped in the first episode of Season 2 by way of a sub-Reddit about menopause.
13. ‘BoJack Horseman’
Everything you need to know about “BoJack Horseman” the show, and BoJack Horseman the, uh, horse man, can be summed up with a scene where he’s looking for a drink to forget his problems, gets served vodka, and taunts the bartender in response, “What is this, breakfast?” For Ben Rojo, brand ambassador for Don Papa Rum, such a scene encapsulates the show’s ethos. “’BoJack Horseman’ is my favorite show of all time! It’s such an honest and human depiction of depression, through the lens of a giant cartoon horse-person,” he says.
For Rojo, the ongoing theme that setbacks are not the opposite of progress is a highlight, and one of the best reasons to watch. “The characters’ sublimation of trauma through substances is a little on the nose,” he says, “but there’s something oddly gratifying about watching Princess Carolyn down a bottle of ‘Catbernet’ after a rough day while sitting on your couch and doing the same.” “Catbernet” it is, though Cabernet will do in a pinch. Just don’t try to go drink-for-drink with BoJack.
12. ‘Entourage’
“Entourage” was either the show you loved or the show you loved to hate. But either way, you probably watched. And the freewheeling, big-spending lifestyle certainly lends itself to some fun drink pairings.
“So, with ‘Entourage,’ there’s one guy making all the money and a bunch of other people orbiting him and starting shenanigans; it’s like Seinfeld only everyone is super hot, and like all my favorite trash TV, it’s easy to get hooked whether you want to or not,” says Erica Long of Sourced Craft Cocktails.
She suggests going just as big as the characters might. “Watching ‘Entourage’ screams an occasion to be a little over the top to me and that means bubbles,” Long says. “A bottle of Moët and a bottle of Dom because Vinnie Chase would never pick just one.”
11. ‘The Simpsons’
“The Simpsons” doesn’t pull many punches with its social commentary, and the world of drinking is taken head on, too. Barney Gumble is the poster boy for a love of drink gone wrong, as is Duff for the ubiquitous big-brand beer that will sacrifice all for more profits. We’ve heard there are one or two scenes where Homer indulges in a few of the beers himself.
Then there’s Moe Szyslak and his eponymous Moe’s, a neighborhood dive if there ever was one. Until, that is, the smash success of the Flaming Moe, a drink Moe stole from Homer. Duh duh duh. If you’re feeling fancy (and have a fire extinguisher handy, just in case) make a flaming cocktail and you’ll feel like you’re right there at Flaming Moe’s, too. Otherwise, channel your inner Duff with Schlitz or Natty Boh.
10. ‘Archer’
If James Bond drank even more than he already does, followed even fewer rules, and generally caused even more mayhem, the result would be Archer, Sterling Archer. The title character of the show by the same name is famous for his one-liners, and none more so than, “All I’ve had today is, like, six gummy bears and some Scotch.” The man enjoys himself a drink or 12.
In the show’s world, Glengoolie is Archer’s Scotch of choice, a drink known as being “for the best of times.” At other times, though, Archer lambastes the use of sour mix in a Margarita, and praises the virtues of the Bloody Mary, saying: “Forget the glass, Woodhouse, just give me the pitcher. For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry god. Bloody Mary, full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now, at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon.”
You have plenty of options, clearly, for your drink of choice while watching. Of course, if you want the evening to be the best of times, Scotch is the way to go.
9. ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’
Pull me a pint at Paddy’s Pub and I’ll be a happy man. Just don’t make me do any Charlie work for the privilege.
“’It’s Always Sunny’ is the greatest show in general but drinking might help you get on the gang’s level a little easier,” says Nick Sadowski, distiller at Philadelphia Distilling. “The show comments on every hot topic in society, usually with some part of the gang taking one side and the other taking the other side.” The show is edgy, delving into controversial conversations that others might steer away from. What makes it work is that the characters have these un-P.C. conversations in a way that showcases their ignorance and obliviousness to the rest of society. “All the jokes are ultimately on them — with them or without them realizing it — and it’s the reason they’re still making the show 15 years later.”
Sadowski says he doesn’t want you to overthink your pairings here. “Rip some shots and drink a Coors or Hamm’s, or whatever you can find, bud,” he suggests. “Eat some rum ham and a hard-boiled egg while you’re at it.”
8. ‘Game of Thrones’
Raise your hand if you own an “I drink and I know things” T-shirt. There’s a few of you, at least. Meanwhile, in Westeros, the only thing more common than a dead royal is a dead royal who liked to drink too much. Siblings Tyrion and Cersei Lannister enjoyed more than their fair share, as did, of course, Robert Baratheon. But few characters didn’t imbibe heavily in the show, and who could blame them? Living in a world rife with betrayal and back stabbings, murders and coups, dragons and White Walkers and … yeah, that Dornish red looks pretty appetizing.
With the popularity of the show and its penchant for booze, some official options for your pairing pleasure were made available, including partnerships with Ommegang beer and Johnnie Walker Scotch. When you don’t want to go corporate, though, just fill up a beer stein with the strongest suds you can find — all the better if you opt for an old-school barleywine or mead.
7. ‘Futurama’
In the “Futurama” universe, robots must heartily consume alcohol as fuel, and the underpinnings of that metaphor are fairly clear. “Looking at Bender as a character representing the ‘working class everyman’ it’s easy to see why he’s literally fueled by alcohol,” says Sother Teague, beverage director of New York’s Amor y Amargo. “For him, it’s an absolute necessity to perform optimally. For us, it’s often a crutch to help cope with the things we either can’t change, disagree with, or don’t understand. Obviously this is an exaggerated characterization but one worthy of a little navel gazing.”
Even so, there’s room for bartenders in the show. “It’s also comforting to think that the role of bartender is still a valuable member of future society as portrayed by iZac, a parody of the beloved ’70s era barman of TV’s ‘Love Boat,’” Teague says. He’s going everyman with his suggestions, too, calling for you to find your favorite lawnmower beer, or what he prefers to call hammock beer, more properly fitting how he’d partake. “And on the side, Jägermeister! Plus, there’s a scene where iZac pours Jäger.”
6. ‘Absolutely Fabulous’
For Aubrey Slater, a bartender who’s worked at many New York bars over a 25-year career, British sitcom “Ab Fab” is the perfect call back to the neon-tinged ’90s, when “the economy was great, everyone had money to spend,” she says. “I was also a go-go dancer at Limelight and Palladium, and had a lot of friends in the vogue-ball houses. One of them introduced me to “Absolutely Fabulous”!
Slater describes the characters as icons who epitomized the decade as independent businesswomen, who were also fashionistas and party girls. “They had a frosted glass double-door refrigerator constantly stocked with Veuve and Bollinger, and they drank Stoli Martinis like water,” she says. As a perfect pairing, Slater recommends the Stoli-Bolli, a tall glass of Stolichnaya on the rocks topped with the Bollinger Champagne, which was created on the show.
5. ‘Billions’
In “Billions,” the only thing more important than having entirely way too much money is ensuring that the world knows it. Then there are a few subplots, like achieving those perfect moments of comeuppance, and planning new ways to screw over your rivals.
Both Bobby Axelrod and his cohorts, as well as Chuck Rhoades, know their way around a bar. Most typically, a whiskey bar, stocked with absurdly expensive bottles like Michter’s Celebration, or highly touted imports such as Kavalan. By all means, feel free to join in with a bottle of either. Or, just grab your favorite special-occasion whiskey from the shelf and pour yourself a dram of that.
4. ‘Sex and The City’
“Sex and the City” launched the Cosmopolitan to stratospheric heights, of course leading to its inevitable crash back to Earth. The Toby Cecchini-created drink is now often wrongly derided as a symbol of the darker years of cocktailing (when Appletinis and Long Island Iced Teas were the most interesting cocktails you could find).
Of course, there’s more to it than that. “’Sex and the City’ is the ultimate grab-your-girlfriends, veg-out-on-the-couch, and finish- off-your-favorite-bottle-of-booze show,” says Effie Panagopoulos, founder of KLEOS Mastiha. “That show was directly responsible for a huge increase in Cointreau sales in the ’90s, since it was a love letter to the Cosmopolitan and the city it was created in, New York.” For a classic combo, pair a “SATC” viewing session with a Cosmopolitan.
3. ‘Mad Men’
Ah, the good ol’ days of corporate life, when the two-Martini lunch wasn’t merely acceptable, but expected. From costume to set design, “what I loved most about ‘Mad Men’ was how incredibly detailed and on point every aspect of the show was,” says Alex Jump, head bartender at Death & Co Denver. “Of course, as a bartender, too, I appreciate how much attention they paid to the drinking trends and fads of the time, from how vodka was perceived, to Heineken’s role as a newer beer in the U.S. market.”
The bottle of whiskey at the desk channels Don Draper better than anything, and points us to the best show drink pairing. “Of course, I mostly drank whiskey while watching the show, particularly American whiskey for me,” Jump says. “I wasn’t trying to keep up with the guys on ‘Mad Men’ though, so sometimes I’d even enjoy mine as a Highball rather than slammed back in one quick gulp.” A modern solution!
2. ‘Scandal’
“Scandal’s” Olivia Pope, played by Kerry Washington, lives a very stressful life, putting out one political fire after another. And in times of need, wine is her friend indeed.
Crystal Sykes, a cocktail and culture writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says she thinks about “Scandal” every time she writes a story with a personal element. “There’s no Black woman alive who hasn’t felt gutted by being a superwoman placed in the shadows,” she says. “So, whenever Olivia Pope, at the brink of mental and emotional collapse, took solace in a glass — or bottle — of Bordeaux, I could almost swear it was cascading down my own throat as she gulped it down. And so did my homegirls.”
Sykes says that “Scandal” gave her friend group a reason to meet up on Thursday nights. “[We’d] drink wine and talk about how no matter how hard it may be to be a Black woman in today’s world, we’ll always be standing in the sun together,” Sykes says. A bottle of Bordeaux it is, then.
1. ‘Cheers’
“Cheers” depicts the platonic ideal of the neighborhood bar, the local, the “third place.” Sometimes — and we cannot stress this enough — you really do want to go where everybody knows your name.
“’Cheers’ is the ultimate drinking show because, well, it’s entirely set in a bar!” says Paul Hletko, founder of FEW Spirits. “It’s a caricature of bar tropes, sure, but the characters are all lovable but flawed, and, to a large extent, ‘Cheers’ was my first view into ‘bar life’ as a youngster unable to go to bars.”
Surely, this is no time nor place for a craft cocktail. No sir. “I would drink old-school for ‘Cheers,’ with a shot of FEW Spirits Straight Bourbon Whiskey and a High Life,” Hletko says. Beer and a shot sounds about right.

En contra: Hasta 1967 era ilegal ser homosexual.
youtube
Manhunt: Unabomber (Discovery Channel)
Participan también Jane Lynch (Glee), Chris Noth (The Good Wife, Sex and the City), Mark Duplass (Togetherness, The Mindy Project), Lynn Collins (John Carter) y Jeremy Bobb (The Knick).
youtube
The Sinner (USA Network)
Diez episodios. Ya está renovada por una segunda temporada. Estreno: 2 de agosto
A favor: Acción, misterio, comedia y Peter Stormare.
En contra: Demasiado ligera, aunque destaca entre las comedias dramáticas de hoy en día.
youtube
What Would Diplo Do? (Viceland)
Seis episodios.
Estreno: 3 de agosto
A favor: Van Der Beek no teme hacer el ridículo.
En contra: Convencieron al DJ de que le convenía parecer estúpido.
youtube
The Guest Book (TBS)
Por allí irán pasando distintos personajes interpretados por Danny Pudi, Jenna Fischer, Margo Martindale, Tommy Dewey, Lauren Lapkus, Michaela Watkins, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Michael Rapaport, Kate Micucci, Jaime Pressly, Stockard Channing, Andrew J. West, John Ortiz, David Zayas, Shannon Woodward o Stephnie Weir. Participan también Garrett Dillahunt (The Mindy Project, Raising Hope), Laura Bell Bundy (Anger Management, Hart of Dixie), Eddie Steeples (My Name Is Earl) y Lou Wilson. Creada, escrita y producida por Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope). Diez episodios. Estreno: 3 de agosto
A favor: Para fans de Inside No. 9 y Room 104, tal vez. Para los fans de los cameos, más bien.
En contra: Convencional, predecible y de risas escasas. Actores desaprovechados.
youtube
Mr. Mercedes (Audience Network)
Completan el cast Mary Louise-Parker (Weeds, The West Wing), Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men, The Truman Show), Kelly Lynch (The L Word, 90210) y Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight). Diez episodios.
youtube
Atypical (Netflix)
Les acompañan Michael Rapaport (Prison Break, Justified), Brigette Lundy-Paine, Amy Okuda (How to Get Away with Murder), Jenna Boyd (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), Nik Dodani (Kevin From Work) y Raúl Castillo (Looking). Creada por Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother). Ocho episodios. Estreno: 11 de agosto
A favor: Un actor protagonista fantástico y unos personajes tan dulces como imperfectos.
En contra: El resto del reparto no está tan bien elegido y el argumento es bastante básico.
youtube
Get Shorty (Epix)

Essence Atkins (Are We There Yet?), Bresha Webb (Grey's Anatomy), Diallo Riddle (Silicon Valley), Notlim Taylor y Amir O'Neil también participan. Escribe Christopher Moynihan (100 Questions). Diez episodios. Estreno: 16 de agosto
A favor: Wayans sigue viviendo en Scary Movie.
En contra: Es de los Upfronts del año pasado, ya no podían estrenarla más tarde.
youtube
The Defenders (Netflix)
youtube
There's... Johnny! (Seeso)
youtube
The Tick (Amazon)
Completan el reparto Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) y Brendan Hines (Scorpion). Sátira del género de superhéroes escrita por Ben Edlund (Supernatural), creador de la serie original emitida entre 1994 y 1996 y del cómic nacido en 1986. Producida por Edlund (Gotham, Revolution), Patrick Warburton -el anterior The Tick-, Barry Josephson (Bones) y Barry Sonnenfield (A Series of Unfortunate Events). Dirigida por Wally Pfister (Flaked). Seis episodios.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people don't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. Amber Heard details alleged Johnny Depp attacks in response to lawsuit
Amber Heard details alleged Johnny Depp attacks in response to lawsuit Amber Heard details alleged Johnny Depp attacks in response to lawsuit https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Responding to his $50 million defamation case against her, the actress, who was married to the Pirates of the Caribbean star for 15 months before she filed for divorce in May, 2016, claims Depp repeatedly hit her, ripped out her hair, and almost suffocated her.
Depp filed his suit earlier this year, revealing he took offence to a piece Heard wrote for The Washington Post, in which she described being the victim of domestic abuse.
She did not mention her ex by name, but he claimed she insinuated he was the abuser, insisting Heard’s allegations were “a hoax”.
Heard, 32, has now responded by going into lengthy details about the former couple’s alleged fights in court papers exclusively obtained by the New York Post.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "7haWVHmo42s", "pn_video_450263", "", "", {"controls":1,"autoplay":0,"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
“About a year into our relationship, I began to witness Johnny abusing drugs and alcohol…,” she writes. “On some occasions, when Johnny simultaneously used both illegal narcotics and prescription medications I have had to get him medical attention (sic).
“Whenever he was using, I worried for both of us. He would become a totally different person, often delusional and violent. We called that version of Johnny, ‘the Monster’.”
Heard went on to claim her ex would often “not remember his delusional and violent conduct after he came out of his drunk or medicated states”, adding, “Because I loved Johnny, I had believed his multiple promises that he could and would get better. I was wrong.”
Recalling a private jet flight from Boston to Los Angeles in May, 2014, the actress claims Depp appeared to be drunk.
“On the flight, Johnny ordered the flight attendants to give him an oxygen tank, and drank heavily,” she writes. “Johnny’s handlers told me that he was upset that I was filming a movie with a romantic scene with James Franco the day before.
“Soon, Johnny began to throw objects at me. Instead of reacting to his behavior, I simply moved seats. That didn’t stop him. He provocatively pushed a chair at me as I walked by, yelled at me, and taunted me by yelling out the name ‘James Franco’.
“At some point, I stood up, and Johnny kicked me in the back, causing me to fall over. Johnny threw his boot at me while I was on the ground. Johnny continued to scream obscenities until he went into the plane bathroom and passed out locked in the bathroom for the remainder of the flight.”
He allegedly apologized later via text, writing: “Once again, I find myself in a place of shame and regret. Of course, I am sorry. I really don’t know why or what happened. But I will never do it again.
“My illness somehow crept up and grabbed me… I must get better… Again, I am so sorry, so sorry… I love you and I feel so bad for letting you down.”
Heard goes on to claim she locked herself in a room a month into the marriage, during a heated argument with her husband over his alleged use of the drug ecstasy during a bender in Australia.
“The argument heated up, and Johnny pushed me, slapped me, and shoved me to the ground before I retreated to a locked bedroom,” she writes. “(The next morning) I went downstairs to find that Johnny was still awake, and that he had stayed up all night, having taken about eight MDMA pills. He was also drinking again. We got into a fight that Johnny made physical, and I barricaded myself in one of the rooms. That didn’t stop Johnny from busting through the door of the room I was in…”
Heard alleges the incident dragged on and left her completely terrified: “In one of the most horrific and scariest moments of this three-day ordeal, Johnny grabbed me by the neck and collarbone and slammed me against the countertop,” she states. “I struggled to stand up as he strangled me, but my arms and feet kept slipping and sliding on to the spilled alcohol and were dragged against the broken glass on the countertop and floor, which repeatedly slashed my feet and arms.
“Scared for my life, I told Johnny, ‘You are hurting me and cutting me’. Johnny ignored me, continuing to hit me with the back of one closed hand, and slamming a hard plastic phone against a wall with his other until it was smashed into smithereens. While he was smashing the phone, Johnny severely injured his finger, cutting off the tip of it… Once I was able to get away, I barricaded myself in an upstairs bedroom.”
Depp, she claims, was hospitalized for his finger injury, while she states she was left with “a busted lip, a swollen nose, and cuts all over my body,” adding, “I still have scars on my arms and feet from this incident.”

In the new court filing, Heard also claims she lashed out at Depp in March 2015 because she feared he was about to attack her sister, Whitney, and Johnny “picked a fight with me” during a trip to Thailand and Malaysia in August, 2015, adding, “While on the Eastern Oriental train… he started hitting and pushing me against a wall by grasping my throat and holding me there. I remember being afraid that Johnny might not know when to stop, and that he might kill me.”
There were other alleged violent moments in December, 2015, and Heard resolved to leave Depp for good and filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order after he allegedly attacked her in May, 2016, when he allegedly threw a phone in her face “as hard as he could”.
“Johnny grabbed my hair and started to slap, shake and yank me around the room while I continued to scream,” she states.
Depp and his representatives have yet to respond to his ex-wife’s latest filing, but in his defamation lawsuit, his lawyers declared: “Mr. Depp never abused Ms. Heard. Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016. They were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career.”

Last night I had the opportunity for an #Angrygeeks first, I was given the chance to review a play about #Batman. Not the character however but the story…the true story on how this iconic character was created. As my wife and I drove the hour and half to Attleboro Massachusetts Community Theater I wondered if my wife would enjoy herself, mind you she and I are the total opposites from two different worlds, I guess that’s why the past 15 years was bliss, As we entered the Theater we were met by Harley Quinn herself as the Classic 1966 Batman TV show playing on a Batman TV set. Into the auditorium we went to find our seats Front row of course, they mood was set with noting but Batman related music and themes. I was honored when co-Director Dave Almeida announced that I was in attendance this is something that I will never forget, then the show began The story of Bill Finger the story of creation of #Batman, the struggles of one mans inner self to find the courage to say enough is enough, the courage he never found. Actor Bob Lively made you believe he was this man as his performance of Comic book writer Bill Finger was unfolded during the two-hour performance. And as the saying goes in the world of comics the Hero is only as good as its villain enter Actor Johnny Bender. Benders performance of Bob Kane the man for years whom claimed #Batman was his Sole creator did his Job to perfection making you truly believe to quote the play “Son of a bitch” and an “Ass-hole” if Awards were to be given. Benders deserves one. The two beautiful leading ladies Megan Begin and Jasia Mackey whom played as Bill’s first and second wives Portia and Lyn Simmons both gave their all as you felt each of their struggles dealing with Bill as he did his best to cope with his inner struggles. Jerry Robinson whom helped create the Joker and Robin was played brilliantly by Michael Capalbo whose facial expressions reminded me of the Joker himself. And Lastly the most heart felt performance of the night must go to supporting player Matt Moos as comic book historian Jerry Bails. I swear I saw real tears as Moos pleaded

off the rack #1195
Monday, January 8, 2017
I gave it the old college try but I was thwarted again from catching up on all the comic books that I wanted to read last week by life's little events. My Dad's 85th birthday meant an evening out with family. Spent most of one day off cleaning the whole house in the aftermath of Christmas being put away for another year. One extra loading and unloading of stuff to take to the monthly Capital Trade Show because I was flying solo for this one took part of another day. Penny came to help and keep me company yesterday at the beginning and the end of the trade show. Thanks to our neighbour vendor Chris for helping me load up after the show. This week has us dealing with our cars having to be serviced. Penny's Soul has to go in for a recall. The ever ominous "service engine soon" light came on the dashboard display of my X-Trail yesterday. The transmission didn't engage a couple of times but I managed to get it going by adjusting the stick shift. I hope it's just the extreme cold of the last week that's causing the problem. I hope I get a bit of alone time to read more this week. Here are comments of the few that I got to.
Phoenix Resurrection #1 - Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Leinil Francis Yu (pencils) Gerry Alanguilan (inks) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). The gang's all here. I still read Astonishing X-Men so I recognised that team and I figure the other two teams are Blue and Gold. Correct me if I'm wrong. So they're bringing back Jean Grey/Phoenix again just in time for the spring release of the movie starring Sophie Turner better known as Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones. There's enough mystery here to keep me reading but I have issues with all-powerful beings and wonder if we need another super human on the racks right now. This 5-issue mini comes out weekly so I will be able to decide whether it's good enough to read the whole story very quickly.
Batman and the Signal #1 - Scott Snyder & Tony Patrick (story) Tony Patrick (writer) Cully Hamner (art) Laura Martin (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). This 3-issue mini lets the Signal shine solo as he tries to figure out where his powers come from. I'm not familiar with Duke but I've seen him fight alongside Batman before. DC is probably hoping that his partnership with Batman will help sell this but here we have another young super hero fighting young super villains. I predict Signal will get into deep trouble and then find a way to win the day. The art would be the only reason that I would read the rest of this story.
Rogue & Gambit #1 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Pere Perez (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This 5-issue mini takes the two off again romantic partners on a mission to save other mutants. The art is very nice and the last page got me good. I'm going to read the next issue to see what happens next.
The Snagglepuss Chronicles #1 - Mark Russell (writer) Mike Feehan (pencils) Mark Morales (inks) Paul Mounts (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). The art got me to pick this off the rack to read with it's mix of human and anthropomorphised animals walking around on two legs. The only thing I recall about the old Hanna Barbera cartoon was Snagglepuss's voice. It sounded snooty to me. The one in this 6-issue mini would sound snooty too since he's a big time playwright. The story takes place in the late 1940s when the government was going after communist sympathisers in the entertainment industry. There are a couple of surprise twists that make this worth reading even if you were never a fan of the cartoon character.
Dark Nights: Hawkman Found #1 - Jeff Lemire (writer) Bryan Hitch (pencils) Kevin Nowlan (inks) Alex Sinclair & Jeremiah Skipper (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I thought that I was done reading any more Dark Night books but then I saw the creative team on this one-shot and had to see what's up with Hawkman these days. I really enjoyed reading this book. They captured the warrior spirit of Carter Hall very well. I was disappointed by the Groundhog Day twist at the end however. As a fan of Jeff, Bryan and Kevin, this book was a blast to read but it didn't make me want to reach for more Dark Night books.
Jessica Jones #15 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Michael Gaydos (art) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The return of the Purple Man has a great twist that you don't want to miss. If you've watched the first season of the TV show you will get added enjoyment from having a deeper insight into the relationship between Jessica and Killgrave.
Action Comics #994 - Dan Jurgens (writer & pencils) Art Thibert, Trevor Scott, Johnny Desjardins & Joe Prado (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Ugh, I can't wait for Booster Gold's guest appearance in this book to be over. In order for this time travel snafu story to have any emotional impact Dan has to make Superman act in a stupid and selfish way. Any hero should know better than to mess with time, but no, Superman MUST find the answers he seeks. That bothers me a lot.
Moon Knight #190 - Max Bemis (writer) Jacen Burrows (pencils) Guillermo Ortego (inks) Mat Lopes (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Crazy Runs in the Family part 3. I really like how Moon Knight's multiple personalities are interacting with each other in Marc's head. The reintroduction of an old supporting character and the surprise twist on the last page gave me that "what a great comic book" chuckle.
Batman #38 - Tom King (writer) Travis Moore (pencils & inks) Giulia Brusco (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). This one is a mind bender. Batman flexes his detective's muscles as he solves a serial murder case. The fisherman in me loved all the red herrings.
Invincible Iron Man #595 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Stefano Caselli & Alex Maleev (art) Marte Gracia & Alex Maleev (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The Search for Tony Stark part 3. We're getting closer to finding Tony but meanwhile the Infamous Iron Man has problems with the Hood and RiRi has problems with the board of directors of Stark Industries. It's all very entertaining.
The Demon: Hell is Earth #2 - Andrew Constant (writer) Brad Walker (pencils) Andrew Hennessy (inks) Chris Sotomayor (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). Jeepers, this is awesome sauce. Not only is the art incredibly nice to look at but the writing is so much fun. I like this Etrigan and Jason Blood pairing. One of the things that made this evil demon character appealing to me was how Jason could control him somewhat. Things have changed between them now and it makes their relationship more interesting. I am definitely going to read the rest of this 6-issue mini.
Punisher: The Platoon #4 - Garth Ennis (writer) Goran Parlov (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Rob Steen (letters). I know that Frank survives this story but I am also hoping the young Vietnamese guerrilla fighter makes it through the war alive too. She's a great character and I keep wondering when she and Frank will meet.
Superman #38 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writers) Sergio Davila (pencils) Vicente Cifuentes (inks) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Super Sons of Tomorrow part 4. I am assuming that future Tim Drake/Batman changes into a character named Savior in the Teen Titans tie-in. I don't care how that happened so I'm not going to read that tie-in. All I now is that he's bad and his team mates in the future Titans show up to help the kids and Jon's dad. I can't wait for this time travel story to conclude in Super Sons #12 which hits the racks January 17.

REPUBLICAN officials warn TRUMP: 2018 bloodbath is coming — SPOTTED at DCA and Dulles as Washington gets out of Dodge — PHOTOS of Pence in Afghanistan — AAN runs ads thanking RYAN and BRADY
BIG ALEX ISENSTADT SCOOP: “Republicans warn Trump of 2018 bloodbath”: “A few weeks before Alabama’s special Senate election, President Donald Trump’s handpicked [RNC] leader, Ronna Romney McDaniel, delivered a two-page memo to White House chief of staff John Kelly outlining the party’s collapse with female voters.
“The warning … reflected deepening anxiety that a full-throatedTrump endorsement of accused child molester Roy Moore in the special election — which the president was edging closer to at the time — would further damage the party’s standing with women. McDaniel’s memo, which detailed the president’s poor approval numbers among women nationally and in several states, would go unheeded, as Trump eventually went all-in for the ultimately unsuccessful Republican candidate. …

CONGRESS averted a government shutdown late yesterday. Both chambers easily cleared a government-funding bill, which also extended surveillance programs and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Funding expires Jan. 19. An $81-billion disaster spending bill easily cleared the House, but the Senate ignored it. THE BOTTOM LINE: As we told you yesterday, Congress punted everything to January.

CNN’S JEREMY DIAMOND at BAGRAM — “Pence makes surprise trip to Afghanistan”: “Vice President Mike Pence touched down in Afghanistan for an unannounced visit on Thursday night to meet with top Afghan officials and rally US troops for his first trip to the country as vice president. The trip, planned in secret for safety reasons, made Pence the highest-ranking Trump administration official to visit an active U.S. combat zone and came four months after President Donald Trump committed several thousand more US troops to the 16-year war effort. …
“Pence landed here at 7:16 p.m. in an ordinary, gray C-17 military transport plane intended to conceal his arrival. … Pence was joined by the U.S. commanding general in Afghanistan, Gen. ATTN. JARED KUSHNER — HA’ARETZ: “In Christmas Message Aimed at Trump, Abbas Says Palestinians Will Never Accept Any Peace Plan From U.S.,” by Jack Khoury: “Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas came out Friday against the American peace initiative and said the Palestinians would not accept any plan made by the Americans due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem, a move that was widely rejected by the world in a UN vote Thursday.
“In a Christmas letter to Christians, Abbas wrote that the Palestinians will not ‘accept any plan from the U.S.’ due to the White House’s ‘biased’ support of Israel and its settlement policy. He also said the American plan ‘is not going to be based on the two-state solution on the 1967 border, nor is it going to be based on international law or UN resolutions.’ …

A major GOP super PAC is planning to spend $10 million to protect House members.
“And another group, the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, plans to spend the majority of its $1 million annual budget selling the tax plan next year, according to one of the group’s founders, Stephen Moore, a distinguished visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation and informal economic adviser to the president. Arguing that ‘the bill sells itself,’ Moore said the committee intends to focus its efforts on selling the advantages of the tax bill to average Americans.” http://politi.co/2peqTGs

SCOOP — SUBPOENA WATCH — SEN. RON JOHNSON’S (R-WIS.) Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is planning on subpoenaing the Office of Personnel Management today for documents related to the Congressional “exemption” to Obamacare. Members of Congress and their staff, generally speaking, are able to purchase health care from the D.C. small-business exchange. The committee plans to ask for communication between 2010 and 2013 dealing with how members of Congress were being mandated to buy insurance. The committee has tried to ask for the documents, to no avail.

MORE TRUMP POLITICAL DRAMA — “Trump advisers vent frustrations about 2018 strategy as president listens,” by WaPo’s Josh Dawsey and Bob Costa: “[Corey] Lewandowski told the president that the RNC was not raising nearly enough money — even though the party has raised record sums — and not doing enough to support his agenda.
“The former Trump campaign manager also griped that he could no longer get his calls returned from the White House, these people said, and was being blocked by the president’s assistant and others under the direction of Kelly. … Later, outside the Oval Office, [Bill] Stepien and Lewandowski had a ‘very intense’ conversation about the broader political operation and what some aides see as Lewandowski’s meddling in it from the outside, while Lewandowski questioned Stepien’s performance, according to advisers with knowledge. The men were later spotted by other aides continuing to argue outside.” http://wapo.st/2kZcUim
— “Dispute Over Political Strategy Erupts Inside the White House,” by NYT’s Maggie Haberman: “The meeting prompted the political director, Bill Stepien, to call an official at the main political group supporting Mr. Trump, America First Policies, to say its counsel should be involved at future gatherings. … Mr. Lewandowski called the White House team too insular, and he said it had done little to tend to fellow Republicans or to conduct outreach with outside groups and supporters. Asked for an example, Mr. Lewandowski said he knew of a senator who had not been invited to the White House Hanukkah party, one attendee said.” http://nyti.ms/2BB26lx
WEST WING DEPARTURE LOUNGE — “Trump Deputy Chief of Staff to Step Down,” by WSJ’s Mike Bender: “Rick Dearborn, one of President Donald Trump’s top aides, will step down early next year to pursue private-sector work, White House officials said, becoming the latest high-profile departure from the West Wing in recent weeks. … A deputy chief of staff who oversaw the White House’s political operation, public outreach and legislative affairs, Mr. Dearborn will remain at the White House for the first month or two of next year, according to people familiar with the planning.” http://on.wsj.com/2CW1PFX
— WAPO’s DAMIAN PALETTA: “White House National Economic Council Deputy Director Jeremy Katz is leaving the Trump administration early next month in what could mark a churn of senior advisers. Katz, a Bush administration veteran who worked as NEC Director Gary Cohn’s lieutenant, played a central role in coordinating the administration’s push to overhaul the tax code. He was also one of four people officially advising Trump on the nomination for Federal Reserve chair.” http://wapo.st/2kCSKv8
WEST WING SEASON 2 — “Trump eyes former aides as West Wing staffers depart,” by Andrew Restuccia and Annie Karni: “Speculation about additions to the cast of characters in Season 2 of Trump’s West Wing has ramped up as the administration braces itself for a wave of staff departures expected in the coming weeks, according to a dozen White House aides and outside advisers who have spoken with the president. In recent weeks, these people say, Trump has been particularly high on Larry Kudlow, an outside economic adviser to the president and a former adviser to President Ronald Reagan. …
“Kudlow has been discussed internally as a potential successor to National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, who has announced no immediate plans to leave but has told friends he will be weighing his options over the holidays. … At a private Christmas party at the White House last week, according to several attendees, the president gave multiple shout-outs from the podium to former campaign spokesman Jason Miller, now a CNN contributor, as well as to lobbyist and former campaign adviser David Urban. Insiders said Urban remains Trump’s top choice for U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, but could also come into the administration in some other role. … [Kellyanne] Conway — who purposefully lowered her public profile earlier this year, running the White House opioid crisis efforts and working closely with the first lady on the issue — is seen internally as a person on the rise, with some suggesting her as a potential successor to Kelly as chief of staff.” http://politi.co/2BzifrW
MUST READ — VANITY FAIR’S GABE SHERMAN goes to TOKYO with STEVE BANNON: “Bannon believed the Russia collusion case was meritless, but he blamed Kushner for taking meetings during the campaign that gave the appearance the Trump team sought Putin’s help. ‘He’s taking meetings with Russians to get additional stuff. This tells you everything about Jared,’ Bannon told me. ‘They were looking for the picture of Hillary Clinton taking the bag of cash from Putin. That’s his maturity level.’ …
“The siege on Roy Moore’s campaign continued. The previous day, Ivanka Trump told the Associated Press ‘there’s a special place in hell for people who prey on children.’ Bannon was incredulous she’d make the comment. ‘What about the allegations about her dad and that 13-year-old?’ he said, referring to the California woman who alleged Trump raped her when she was a teen (the suit has since been dropped.) ‘Ivanka was a fount of bad advice during the campaign.’ …
“Once we’re airborne I asked Bannon how the presidency had changed Trump. ‘He’s much more moderate,’ Bannon said, sipping a Fiji water. ‘He’s an accommodationist. Trump’s tendency is to always get Maggie Haberman in there. He reads The New York Times. To him that’s the paper of record.’ For a presidency defined by Twitter, Bannon said Trump has a limited grasp of new media. ‘He doesn’t go online. That’s a huge thing. I mean Orrin Hatch’—who’s 83—’goes online! Trump reads printouts.’” http://bit.ly/2zfxqAt
— ANOTHER FUN ANECDOTE FROM GABE’S PIECE:“Bannon has a canny ability to cultivate mainstream journalists. … In August 2015, I received an e-mail from Kurt Bardella, who at the time handled Breitbart’s public relations. … For the previous three years, Bannon had tried to destroy my professional reputation. … A few days after Bardella e-mailed, I met Bannon for lunch at the Bryant Park Grill in Midtown Manhattan. … Bannon shook my hand graciously. He told me he enjoyed my book on Ailes. What about all the hit pieces he published? ‘Ha! Those were love taps, dude. Just business.’ We proceeded to have a highly entertaining lunch swapping media and political gossip.”
DACA WATCH — THE JANUARY DRAMA — “In private meeting, Schumer angrily confronted by Hispanic Caucus members as prospects for DACA deal slip again,” by WaPo’s Ed O’Keefe: “Disagreements among Democrats over how to keep fighting to enact legal protections for immigrant ‘dreamers’ boiled over in the office of Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Thursday as he met with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in what several participants described as a tense and heated exchange.
“In a vivid display of growing divisions in the party over how to fight Republicans on immigration policy, members of the Hispanic Caucus — a 31-member group of House and Senate Democrats — walked off the House floor Thursday afternoon and headed across the Capitol to Schumer’s office suite. With just a few minutes’ notice, they showed up in the lobby of Schumer’s suite across from the Senate floor in hopes of pressing him to persuade more senators to vote against the GOP spending plan that was set to be approved in the coming hours.” http://wapo.st/2BjswnO
— “Trump Administration Considers Separating Families to Combat Illegal Immigration,” by NYT’s Caitlin Dickerson and Ron Nixon: “The Trump administration is considering a plan to separate parents from their children when families are caught entering the country illegally, according to officials who have been briefed on the plans. The forceful move is meant to discourage border crossings, but immigrant groups have denounced it as draconian and inhumane. … The policy is favored by the White House, and has been approved by Immigration and Customs Enforcement … [O]fficials said that the new Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, who has final approval power, has yet to sign off on the proposal.” http://nyti.ms/2Bi1YTT
COMING ATTRACTIONS — “Forget what they say — House Democrats are readying for impeachment,” by WaPo’s Paul Kane: “To fill their top spot on the House Judiciary Committee, Democrats had a choice between experts in two critical policy arenas — a constitutional-law ace with firsthand experience battling Donald Trump, and an architect of sweeping immigration legislation. By a wide margin, they chose the constitutional-law expert. Why? To ready themselves for a battle with President Trump that could end with impeachment proceedings. The selection of Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) as the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee was the clearest sign yet of how seriously House Democrats consider the possibility of a full-blown constitutional showdown with Trump.” http://wapo.st/2CXZydk
SEXUAL HARASSMENT FILES — “At least $600,000 in public money spent settling Senate misconduct claims since 1997,” by Elana Schor: “At least $600,000 in public money has been spent over the past 20 years to settle 13 workplace misconduct claims against senators’ offices, including $14,260 for a single settlement alleging sex discrimination, according to data released late Thursday.
“The information on workplace harassment payouts from a fund maintained by Capitol Hill’s Office of Compliance, divulged by the Senate Rules and Appropriations Committees, does not include any details on which offices the payments correspond to. Its release came as the Rules panel, led by Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), faced pressure from both sides of the aisle to join the House in opening the upper chamber’s taxpayer-funded settlement books amid a national outcry over sexual harassment.
“The Senate’s single claim of sex discrimination in the data released late Thursday included no data on whether sexual harassment was involved — the two have generally not been distinguished in congressional misconduct record keeping. Senators’ offices paid $21,420 to settle two claims involving racial discrimination, $89,800 to settle three claims involving disability discrimination, and $286,786 to settle eight claims that involved age discrimination, according to the data.” http://politi.co/2BjVvYC
— “Release of plan to change Congress’ harassment rules is delayed,” by Elana Schor: “Bipartisan House negotiators on Thursday delayed the planned release of a plan to overhaul Capitol Hill’s workplace harassment policy, but the move appeared to signal momentum for action when Congress returns to Washington in 2018.” http://politi.co/2kEHbnn
— “Ethics committee expands Rep. Farenthold probe,” by John Bresnahan: “The House Ethics Committee announced late Thursday that it was expanding its investigation into GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold to include allegations he improperly used official resources for campaign activities, as well as lying to the panel. Farenthold is already under investigation over claims that he sexually harassed at least one former staffer. Thursday’s announcement, however, means the stakes have gone up dramatically for the Texas Republican, as misuse of official resources is a potential violation of both House rules and federal law.” http://politi.co/2DweDEn
TRUMP INC. — “Trump’s Mar-a-Lago tax deal veiled from IRS review,” by Palm Beach Post’s Christine Stapleton and Lawrence Mower: “Donald Trump’s deal with the town of Palm Beach to turn Mar-a-Lago into a private club hinged on an act of charity crafted to skirt IRS scrutiny and deliver for Trump a seven-figure tax break, a Palm Beach Post investigation has found. To make sure Trump could get the $5.7 million deduction, America’s future president and his lawyers intentionally left out those details from the written agreement with town officials.
“The deal, which took shape in public meetings over several months in 1993, provides the best look at Trump’s largest form of charity: an obscure and controversial land-use deduction known as a preservation easement. What did Trump do? He donated control of certain ‘critical features’ at Mar-a-Lago such as art objects and even vegetation to a nonprofit to assure the town that neither he nor a future owner could change them. But he got something in return. Since then, Trump has applied the tax break to his golf courses and estates to potentially deduct more than $100 million from his taxes, even though the IRS once listed such deductions among their ‘Dirty Dozen Tax Scams.’” http://bit.ly/2p8moNm
RESOLVED … FOR NOW — “Judge dismisses suits claiming Trump violated emoluments clause,” by Josh Gerstein: “A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a pair of lawsuits claiming that President Donald Trump’s failure to divest himself of his real estate empire and other business holdings violated the Constitution’s provision banning receipt of foreign ‘emoluments’ while in public office. U.S. District Court Judge George Daniels ruled that the two suits were fatally flawed because the plaintiffs failed to show injury directly related to the use of Trump’s properties by foreign officials and governments. Daniels, who sits in Manhattan and is an appointee of President Bill Clinton, also said the issue was one that Congress should police, not the courts.” http://politi.co/2kEYp3H
ACT QUICK! — “Residents can’t prepay property taxes in Montgomery County. But they can in Fairfax and D.C.,” by WaPo’s Rachel Siegel: “Change of plans: The Montgomery County Council won’t be rushing to the rescue of homeowners shaken up by the GOP tax plan approved by Congress this week.
“As the tax overhaul inched closer to passage Tuesday, council member Roger Berliner (D-Potomac-Bethesda) urged the county to help residents prepay their 2018 property taxes by the end of this year, an option that could allow them to deduct those taxes in full, before a new cap takes effect. But in less than 48 hours, that plan caved in under the weight of a rushed timeline and administrative hassles, as well as the still-murky question of whether prepayment as a way of avoiding the cap is possible at all. …
“There was still hope for other D.C.-area residents worried about a big tax hit. Both in the District and Fairfax County — the most populous jurisdiction in the Washington region — officials said residents would be able to prepay, as long as they act quickly. … On Wednesday, District officials said residents may prepay their property taxes. Those payments can be paid electronically before midnight on Dec. 31, and D.C. branches of Wells Fargo will also accept checks or credit cards by the close of business Dec. 30, according to an advisory issued by the city.” http://wapo.st/2kDTIr8

WHAT GARRETT GRAFF IS READING — “FBI’s top lawyer said to be reassigned,” by WaPo’s Devlin Barrett, Ellen Nakashima and Carol Leonnig: “The FBI’s top lawyer, James Baker, is being reassigned — one of the first moves by new director Christopher A. Wray to assemble his own team of senior advisers as he tries to fend off accusations of politicization within the bureau. Baker told colleagues he will be taking on other duties at the FBI, according to people familiar with the matter. In recent months, Baker had been caught up in a strange interagency dispute that led to a leak probe and attracted the attention of senior lawmakers, but people familiar with the matter said the probe had recently ended with a decision not to charge anyone. The leak issue had not played a part in Baker’s reassignment, these people said.” http://wapo.st/2BOLBPW
IN VATICAN CITY — “Death Comes for Cardinal Law,” by The Atlantic’s Emma Green in Rome: “The crowd at St. Peter’s was small. Ushers rolled away stacks of empty chairs just minutes before mass began, and even the rows up front weren’t fully filled. Some people were there as Law’s supporters: Callista Gingrich, the American ambassador-designate to the Holy See, told me that she and her husband, Newt, ‘are blessed to be here today. [Law] was a dear friend.’” http://theatln.tc/2zfHysN
VALLEY TALK – “Eric Schmidt to Step Down as Executive Chairman of Google Parent,” by WSJ’s Jack Nicas: “Google-parent Alphabet Inc. said Eric Schmidt will step down from his post as executive chairman in January, an unexpected retreat by the tech giant’s most high-profile ambassador. Mr. Schmidt, who joined Google in 2001 as chief executive and served in that position until 2011, will transition to a role as technical adviser and will continue to serve on Alphabet’s board, the company said in a statement Thursday. Alphabet said his replacement will likely be a nonexecutive chairman.
“Google said little about the reason for the change, and declined to make Mr. Schmidt, 62 years old, available for an interview. In the statement, he said that co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google CEO Sundar Pichai ‘and I all believe that the time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition.’” http://on.wsj.com/2Dvkiur

RUSSIA WATCH — “Russian hackers targeted more than 200 journalists globally,” by AP’s Raphael Satter in Paris, Jeff Donn in Plymouth, Massachusetts and Nataliya Vasilyeva in Moscow: “The Associated Press found that [Russian television anchor Paval] Lobkov was targeted by the hacking group known as Fancy Bear in March 2015, nine months before his messages were leaked. He was one of at least 200 journalists, publishers and bloggers targeted by the group as early as mid-2014 and as recently as a few months ago.
“The AP identified journalists as the third-largest group on a hacking hit list obtained from cybersecurity firm Secureworks, after diplomatic personnel and U.S. Democrats. About 50 of the journalists worked at The New York Times. Another 50 were either foreign correspondents based in Moscow or Russian reporters like Lobkov who worked for independent news outlets. Others were prominent media figures in Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltics or Washington.” http://bit.ly/2By2GAs
MEDIAWATCH — “Five Women Are Accusing A Top Left-Leaning Media Executive Of Sexually Harassing Them,” by BuzzFeed’s Cora Lewis: “Don Hazen has been an executive at left-leaning media outlets since the 1980s, first helming the influential Mother Jones magazine as publisher and in 1997 starting AlterNet, an online outlet publishing and syndicating reporting on ‘the environment, human rights and civil liberties, social justice, media, and health care issues.’
“But five women journalists have told BuzzFeed News that Hazen sexually harassed them while they worked for AlterNet touching them inappropriately, discussing their sex lives, making unwanted advances, sending explicit emails, and showing them explicit photographs — including one of his naked, erect penis. (The women have remained friends since.) A sixth journalist said she was sexually harassed by him, though she wasn’t his employee at the time. After BuzzFeed News asked Hazen and the board of the Independent Media Institute, AlterNet’s nonprofit parent, for comment, the board returned a statement on Wednesday saying Hazen has been placed on ‘indefinite leave’ as a result of the accusations.” http://bzfd.it/2BOVYDb

A trend she thinks deserve more attention: “Food insecurity and inequality. 41 million Americans were food insecure in 2016, and there were plenty of discouraging trends in the Department of Agriculture’s annual report on hunger and food insecurity. The census tracts with the highest proportions of low-income households are often full of food deserts, with no access to grocery stores that carry healthy food or fresh produce. … [T]here are plenty of food deserts in D.C. — in the backyard of the White House and the Capitol — while the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress continue to propose massive cuts to SNAP.” Read her Playbook Plus Q&A: http://politi.co/2CWk12j
