The Smiths “How Soon Is Now?” 1985. Rough Trade Records. I’m still riding high from Johnny Marr’s concert at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee earlier this week, where one of the highlights was his performance of this song, one of my favorites. It’s one of those songs that instantly transports me back to 1985/86, all teenage angst and emo. “How Soon Is Now?” originally appeared as the b-side to “William, It Was Really Nothing” in 1984. After its inclusion on Hatful of Hollow, “How Soon Is Now” got its own single release in 1985 and it went to #24 in the UK (it did not chart in the US, much to The Smiths’ and their label’s - Rough Trade - execs surprise and frustration: Sire Records in the US did little to promote it). This 12″ single is backed with “Well I Wonder” (which appears on the 1984 LP Meat is Murder) and “Oscillate Wildly.” 

Marr’s performance on Tuesday night was filled with many many other great moments as he flawlessly mixed old Smith songs  (“The Headmaster Ritual,” “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” “There is a Light That Never Goes Out,” “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me”), new solo material (“Hi Hello,” "Easy Money”) and some covers (most especially one of the encores, his amazing rendition of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You”).

MEAT IS MURDER was first released on February 11th 1985, an astonishing 33 years ago today! The album contains everything that made the Smith great and perpetually resonant. Johnny Marr's guitars range from the rock and roll Post Punk of The Headmaster Ritual and What She Said, to the sloping elegaic strumming of That Joke Isn't funny Anymore and Well I Wonder. Marr gives whatever the song requires. Lighting a fire beside him is Andy Rourke's bass. Together they create space for Mike Joyce, who wisely stays in the pocket and only takes the lead on the purposeful and measured plodding on the title track. Leading the charge is Morrissey at his most pointed, political, personal, and piercingly funny. Self-validation at the railway station. Dropping his trousers to the queen, smothered by tide of time, caught between life and death, (and preferring neither) backed by a tremulous heart Rusholme Ruffians is indeed my favorite track on the album, and my favorite song by The Smiths full stop. The main guitar riff is sprightly and inviting, the repeated Revolution of the base is mesmerizing in the revolution of and the lyrical vocal phrasing is so nakedly earnest that hope is the inevitable consequence. l love this song so much that I once included an extended essay analysis of its contents in the photonic Valentine to very good friend of mine (for a different Valentine's Day flavor this year, might I suggest the wan sigh that is "Well I Wonder") This past summer when my world came to include a new person.and my time became saturated with the glorious experiences and gooey feelings from which I am obligated to offer to make a mix CD, Inknew I had to include some version of the song on the track list Indeed the live version of the track, as produced on the rank album. With The Latest Flame intro, is a moveable feast, and an insistent call to dance to seize the joy that one can.
