I got this record from the thrift store today for I think $2. It is from 1958 but looks brand new, because how many times are you really going to pull this thing out to listen to it? Really? Even 1958 was rolling its eyes at this nonsense.
Johnny Puleo is apparently the small man in the front. He is so good at harmonica and pantomime that he played for both the US and French Presidents (according to the back of the sleeve). I cannot imagine a media landscape in which a small harmonica clown is a prime get for receptions of Leaders of the Free World, so I will just leave this information to haunt your nightmares.
I have not listened to this record yet. But the sleeve assures me it features at least four men playing the harmonica simultaneously, so I assume it will sound like harmonica music. Like a lot of harmonica music. ...Perhaps too much, now I think about it.
I intend to play this while I play Skyrim. If this is good enough for President Eisenhower or whoever the hell, it is good enough for me to navigate Todd's glitches to.
...Also ALL my records are like this. There is no escape.
I also bought this today. I don't even know what it says. And this isn't even my first polka record.
...My point is, when you have a $20 mono record player that doesn't work properly, you don't buy GOOD records.

Philadelphia 29/3
March 30th, 2009
Day One off tour…jesus christ, i wrote “off” instead of “of”…things have got this bad already? Anyway, we woke in New Jersey. I don’t understand why we stayed in NJ, the day before and of the Philly show. It meant two pretty long journeys, desperate to pee, but WHO AM I to question the judgement of a tour manager. Especially one so fine as Joe Puleo. Actually, come to think of it, I think he insinuated we’d get robbed if we stayed nearer to the gig, or something like that.
Some Notes:
Previous Philadelphia experiences of ours had been quite lame. One show at an awful club where we got our spare tyre stolen (fair enough Joe), and another at Johnny Brendas, which was an okay, if uneventful, show, but sadly in an area where there was not a lot to do. Fishtown?
South Street was really cool.
Great falafel from some place called ‘Chickpeas’. Turned on the old English charm and got some free fries given to us. Never seems to fail (even if it’s never intended).
HAIL STORM!
Repo records was really cool. First time I went in they were playing Swans, and then the Fever Ray album. I got the Mi Ami record, which I have yet to listen to, but the stuff I’ve heard on their myspace is rad. They’re touring the UK soon, and OBVIOUSLY we’re away on tour ourselves so have to miss it. Sob.
Best of all in this store…I found an illegal Los Campesinos! bootleg DVD. I think this means we’ve made it. It was a (n actually very good recording) of our show in the little room at Amsterdam Paradiso last year, ingeniously entitled “Knee Deep In Amsterdam”. I need to get a camera so I can capture these incredible moments.
We finally got to play with Ponytail. We’ve been trying to do a show with them for a long time, and it often seems the best way to see a band you want to see is to work out playing a show with them. They were really lovely, friendly guys and their show was awesome. So tight, and intricate and fun.
Also, we met up with Sky Larkin for what Katie informs me is our 4th tour together. Two UK, one mainland Europe, and now the US of A. We played, like, our 8th ever show with Sky Larkin. In Bradford. It’s so great that we’ve journeyed through this so-called Music Biz together, BFFs.
Speaking of which, Patrick and Ian G of Titus Andronicus made the trip to see us. They say they’re touring the UK again soon, and I THINK we’re even gonna be home to see it, so they’re totally coming to stay with me at my Mum’s house. Party times.
Two beautiful people brought us food. Young Griffin brought us oatmeal cookies and a blueberry cake that I’ve not allowed anybody to eat yet, because it’s too pretty to spoil (and I want it to myself) and a really cute girl who brought us animal-free Pumpkin cookies. I think we have the nicest fans in the world.
FINALLY…I think I’m gonna try to not get drunk for a week. I feel pretttttty rough today and if I was less wasted I might have more interesting things to talk about. We’ll see…

I was tagged by @terpia – thank you!
Put your whole songs library on shuffle and write down first 10 songs, then tag 10 people.
*Disclaimer: my song library includes songs from my childhood and other members of my family, so I’m going to mark the songs I would actually listen to with an asterisk. I’m also not including Christmas songs or audiobook chapters because that’s approximately half of the library.
1. The Carpenters - Touch Me When We’re Dancing*
2. Canadian Brass - Piano Sonata No. 11 in A Major
3. Lang Elliott and Wil Hershberger - Straight-Lanced Meadow Katydid
4. Johnny Puleo and the Chimes Family - The Entertainer*
5. Eric Carmen - All By Myself*

8. The Beach Boys - The Warmth of the Sun
9. Christopher Bill - God Only Knows (by The Beach Boys)*
10. Joan Baez - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down*
Because that’s not particularly representative, here are ten from a subset that I do listen to, including some nostalgic childhood songs:
1. Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls
2. Lawrence Welk - Helena Polka
3. Second Fiddle - The Irish Rover
4. Aaaardvarks - The Intermission Song!

Jenny Lewis: just a phone call away
newsreview.com April 9, 2009
Jenny Lewis goes solo, keeps friends close
By John Phillips
Confucius once wrote, “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.”
Jenny Lewis, who boasts a career path decorated with accomplishments most only undertake in dreams, lives her life by this mantra. Currently promoting her recent solo album, Acid Tongue, Lewis is touring her way from Australia and across California on the proverbial road to Coachella, the big-time festival in Southern California.
“We were on an airplane yesterday with two rival rugby teams. They were growling at each other,” Lewis recounts, laughing, during an interview last week.
Lewis is the lead singer of Rilo Kiley, but her career actually began when she was 3 years old and starred in a Jell-O commercial. And her Hollywood calling spanned over 15 years, with highlights including roles in The Wizard with Fred Savage, Foxfire with Angelina Jolie, Pleasantville with Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon, and the ’80s classic Troop Beverly Hills.
But if you ask her about these experiences, she claims she was too young to remember any of it.
So it goes. The acting side of her career went on permanent hiatus in 2001 after Don’s Plum, but recently Lewis was asked to contribute a song to the Disney animated film Bolt. And when the song was finished, the filmmakers also asked her to do a line for the movie.
“It was one line. It was something like, ‘We’ve gotta boom, Mike!’” Lewis explains. “It’s funny. You go in and you just kind of say the line in a recording studio, and you say the line maybe 25 times in different ways.
“It was pretty exciting to see myself as this strange animated brunette.”
Like an ensemble film, Lewis’ latest album is a special collaborative effort that came to life while she and friends were living in Laurel Canyon, Calif., at bandmate Jonathan Wilson’s house.
“I wouldn’t say that it was the sole inspiration, but it definitely opened up some of the player possibilities,” she says of recording at a home with pals. “I met a bunch of people up at his house, and we’re neighbors … so there is definitely that kind of spirit going on on the record.”
Lewis says the musicians on the album brought a unique spirit to the songs, in part because she was recording essentially with two different band configurations. “Some of the songs were left over from the tours I did for Rabbit Fur Coat … so I wanted to record those in almost a live setting,” Lewis explains. “And then some of the other songs were written during the last Rilo Kiley album, Under the Blacklight, and some were tried there, and some kinda ended up on my record and a couple I just wrote in the studio while we were working.”
A star-studded collection of guests also shows up to help out with the album. M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel, a.k.a. the band She & Him, along with superstud Elvis Costello, make appearances on the record.
But in some ways, there’s just one guest musician that stands out: Lewis’ father, Eddie Gordon, who plays harmonica on the track “Jack Killed Mom.” Gordon, a former member of Johnny Puleo’s Harmonica Gang, a popular novelty act in the late ’50s and early ’60s, and Lewis have played together “in the studio, but never live,” Lewis shares.
“But I would love to play with him in a live context,” she adds.
So what does the future hold for this ginger-haired darling of the indie-rock world? In addition to her current tour, her band Rilo Kiley is currently compiling an album of B-sides and rarities. “It’s really exciting. We have been friends and playing music for so long, so we had to dust off the ol’ hard drive,” Lewis says.
The other project Lewis wants to work on is the follow-up to 2003’s Postal Service album Give Up, but has yet to receive word from anyone. “I am always in the wings waiting for Ben [Gibbard] and Jimmy [Tamborello] to start working on a new Postal Service record,” Lewis adds. “I know very little about it, but I am just a phone call away.”
