Joe Harriott-John Mayer Double Quintet – Indo-Jazz Suite

Were there more justice in jazz history, alto saxophonist Joe Harriott would be acknowledged as a pioneer in the flowering of postbebop explorations in the early 1960s. A Jamaica native, Harriott made his biggest mark in the jazz world with his British quintet when they recorded Free Form and Abstract in the very-early 1960s. His brainy phrases accentuated lots of Caribbean elements (including tactical use of silence) as well as heaps of abstractions. Indo-Jazz Fusion catches Harriott in great form playing in a standard jazz quintet (with one of jazz trumpet’s true greats, Kenny Wheeler) playing alongside a quintet of Indian musicians led by John Mayer. The droning sitars and raga structures, along with the ricochets of Indian hand percussion, make both great solid frames and sliding, dramatic backdrops for Harriott and Wheeler to blow, albeit in measured phrases rather than wide-open amounts. Harriott’s pithy, sometimes piercing phrases are ideal when folded into Wheeler’s wide-tone blowing. It’s certainly a strange recording, but it’s fantastically pulled together. –Andrew Bartlett

“Life is like a box of crayons. Most people are the 8-color boxes, but what you’re really looking for are the 64-color boxes with the sharpeners on the back. I fancy myself to be a 64-color box, though I’ve got a few missing. It’s ok though, because I’ve got some more vibrant colors like periwinkle at my disposal. I have a bit of a problem though in that I can only meet the 8-color boxes. Does anyone else have that problem? I mean there are so many different colors of life, of feeling, of articulation.. so when I meet someone who’s an 8-color type.. I’m like, “hey girl, magenta!” and she’s like, “oh, you mean purple!” and she goes off on her purple thing, and I’m like, “no - I want magenta!””

I keep coming back to this documentary on the life of guitar legend Eric Clapton, because I relate a lot to it. Not because I play guitar like him, no not at all, I devote him and he has an influence on my playing but because of his personal life. The drugs, the women, the emptiness, the sorrow but then happiness, a state which I have started feeling like attained nowadays. I am very much touched through this film, I also do write, and it very in-depth describes how song writing or writing of any sort in pain is a wonder. I’m a blues music fanatic, my everyday musical influences are Eric Claption, SRV, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer and then moving to rock and different genres of pop and electronic.  Plan is to rewatch this documentary either tonight or tomorrow. Still planning, but this is on the queue. Spent my day with my parents, went for lunch at our favorite restaurant in Hyatt, and I have stopped taking photographs for these lunches/outings with my family firstly because I want to keep my family life intimate, and secondly I don’t want to come as a show-off, that I go to 5/7 stars with my parents for lunch or dinners. We also shopped shit tons of grocery and kitchen inventory. Let’s just keep these intimate. But that’s uncertain, if I ever feel like uploading/clicking I will. Somethings, when you reach a certain place in life you feel like keeping private, especially on the path I am walking on professionally, I’ll be soon famous or known (for lack of a better word) and I just don’t want to leave traces for people to intrude my personal space/privacy. Anyway, I am just fiddling through YouTube learning some cool insights at the moment, I’m free for now. Finished reading the docs for a new AI modeling programming language called MOJO, and reading more stuff alongside. Long evening ahead. Can someone suggest me a movie or something? Oh geesh, I don’t have an audience here.

One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you Never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you."
