John Gilling - The Mummy's Shroud (1967) The third film in the Hammer horror Mummy series, and the last one to feature a traditionally bandaged Mummy this is a bit of a ho-hum affair for the most part, but with some interesting bits as the film goes on. As it starts it does feel like a pretty sub-par Hammer movie, and in general the Mummy series was that, always less interesting than the more prestige Frankestein and Dracula series, definitely less iconic, in this case having neither Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee to bring that all-essential star power. It does feature one of my favourite of the Hammer stable of regular actors, André Morell, but even he goes away quite soon in the proceedings. John Phillips does then take on the role of the more significant actor, and he is nowhere near the icon of the other three. As a story it's the regular "archaeologists go into pharaoh's tomb, get chased by mummy's curse". Nothing new here, it's also full of pretty offensive brown-face for most of the Egyptians on screen also playing into stereotypes of laziness and superstitiousness. It is by far the worst of the Mummy films up until now in the Hammer series. However it becomes more interesting towards the end as the action ratchets up and characters try to escape Egypt, the highlight is the Mummy's death at the end, with a pretty cool special effect... and that's the main reason to watch this. Hello Mesa! This Thursday Jan 12th at 6pm, join us for the swearing in ceremony of three new Councilmember's and the mayor. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers and contributors that helped make my campaign for Mesa City Council District 3 a successful one. We knocked on the doors of close to 9000 voters. I can officially retire two pairs of shoes. We won and We did it with people power. There are many, many people to thank and I have been calling and writing ou all. Thank you most of all to my wife Ericka and son Rian who were with me every step of the way, my mother Barbara Rae who I consulted almost daily, Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh who was always there with advice and support, and Alison Porter who gave me countless hours of time and knowledge. Thank you to everyone who walked and knocked doors with me in the heat and for Kevin Smith for driving with me for so many hours. I have met with almost every department head and have been reading everything that there is to know about Mesa.
