Today, on the fourth Sunday of Lent we celebrate the Venerable John, Abbot of Sinai and author of the Ladder of Divine Ascent (or the Climacus). This indispensable book stands as a witness to the great effort needed for entrance into God’s Kingdom (Mt.10: 12). The spiritual struggle of the Christian life is a real one, “not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers of the present darkness the hosts of wickedness in heavenly places” (Eph 6:12). Saint John encourages the faithful in their efforts for, according to the Lord, only “he who endures to the end will be saved” (Mt.24:13). The troparion of Saint John is chanted by St. Kassiani Antiochian Archdiocese Choir of Australia. John Climacus, a Christian monk living on Mount Sinai, was known under different names. You might have heard of him as John of the Ladder, John Sinaites, or John Scholasticus. All the names refer to his life; however, there is almost no information about his biography. What we know is that the saint came to the monastery at the age of 16 and wrote several instructive books, with “The Ladder of Divine Ascent” being the most famous one. In the featured 13th-century Novgorod icon, you can see John Climacus surrounded by Saint George (on the left) and Saint Blaise (on the right).

It is just as impossible for the person who nourishes and panders to his flesh to fly to heaven as it is for an overfed bird.
