Rereading the first few chapters of John Theydon's Captain Scarlet books, the author really wrote Paul as this fun guy to be around with when he's off duty.
Its kinda adorable tbh 😁

Rereading the first Stingray novel, as a comment from someone else on it (I'm sorry, I'm HORRIBLE with names :( edit: It was @lugenethedramallama !! ^^) reminded me of how much I love 'em
A: I'd forgotten that Troy name drops Steve Zodiac, specifically as an astronaut, thus directly tying Fireball XL5 into the world as Stingray (somethign the shows sadly never did, although the comcis did so VERY directly. Legit crossover events! ^^ ) edit: Also I forgot taht not only does Atlanta name drop Venus and Fireball.. she apparently is FRIENDS with Venus ^^
I LOVE how clever Atlanta is in a very bad situation. (also just how deeply Sam loves his daughter)
Marina spotting the net and saving the day is a great moment, and evenwithout talking, she still makes her thoughts known!
Troy and Phones' friendship is just.... AUUUUUGH I love it. They're brothers and it's great
Also the moment after Troy sneaks into a town to try and get info, runs into trouble, manages to get back just in time to run into Phones who's heading out to go find him: "Hold it, mister!" a voice growled. A figure stepped from the rock shadows and Troy saw he glint of moonlight on gunmetal. He chuckled softly. "Okay! Don't shoot! I'll come quietly!" "Troy!" Phones came forward eagerly. He was dressed as roughly as Troy was. "Gee pal," he said in a relieved voice, "I was just on my way to look for you. I figured you'd run into bad trouble!" "I hit trouble all right, Phones. But I guess it was good trouble for us. Tell you about it when we're aboard. You ought to be court-martialed for disobeying orders to stay put," Troy's tone took on a mock severity as they picked their way over the rocks. "Yeah?" snorted Phones. "Well, somewhere in the regulations there's a clause that says a crew can take over from the skipper if they think he's nuts, and seeing Marina and me are unanimous about that ---" "Okay, buddy!" Troy chuckled. "I cry quits."

what I find fascinating is that BOTH of them are 100% against even the CONCEPT of it.
Jeff is actually the one to suggest the idea of spies, and is the one to 'suggest' TinTin and Kyrano (and exclude the tracys from the list).
Scott is just kinda standing there going 'of course it isn't them', and when Jeff gets angry, uncomfortably points out that JEFF was the one to bring it up
I just really love the interactions and fierce loyalty they've all got for each other. There's LOTS of great moments in the novels, and ways to explore the characters and their relationships.
When they DO eventually figure out that Kyrano is the 'weak point', it is never even a faint consideration that he is a WILLING spy. Instead all effort goes into trying to find a way to protect Kyrano from the Hood, with a general 'if you have one of your spells, let us know so we can be prepared for possible danger' clause
I can't find the post again, but a whiles back there was a discussion about the John Theydon book 'Terror from the Stars', with a lot of interest about the scene where Jeff chews Scott out for suggesting Kyrano or Tin-Tin might be the spy.
Someone said they would like to see how it went down. I've just extricated my copy, so for your reading pleasure, here are the two relevant pages:

Book Read in 2023 #36 “Thunderbirds:Terror From The Stars” by John Theydon
Tumblr media
This modern hardcover edition is an updated edited version of Theydon’s original “Thunderbirds” paperback from 1966. The original is notorious for several off-model errors, and those have been fixed here.
The result is half a good Thunderbirds story in that the characters are now familiar and well represented, everyone gets time in the narrative, and each of the Thunderbird craft see action.
But the whole premise of Thunderbirds is about rescuing innocent people in danger, so when the menace here is revealed as extraterrestrial in origin (which the revised title gives away), it feels like the story diverts from the very DNA of the central concept.
The plot would have worked better for one of the later Anderson series such as Captain Scarlet or UFO.

Greetings! For some asks: 9. Scene that first made me love (or hate) the character 26. What they would do if stuck in an elevator with [insert character of your choice from the same fandom] For Scott and John, with Gordon too if you wish.
Greetings and Salutations!
Since I did each question for all three characters, I'll be putting this beneath a readmore ^^
9. Scene that first made me love (or hate) the character
Scott: The fact that he was a deadpan / dry-wit stoic, as that's my favorite character type ^^ (In quick note, I was first introduced to the works of Gerry Anderson via the Theydon novels, starting with the Penelope novels, then the TB novels, then the CS and Stingray novels, then the TV21, Countdown and later the Fleetway comics - not watching the tvshows till I was 16) I also liked how he was written and how he handled situations he was put into / how he interacted with other characters. I also liked that we were shown that he is very much NOT perfect or invincible off the bat, more than once, actually! He also showed himself to be good at leading / planning, while still listening tot he advice of others / letting people who could do things better than him take the lead WITH those things (like letting gordon handle the alien craft in the reservoir). It was a trend that continued into the other novels and comics. It made for a well rounded character who had fun interactions and scenes
John: His being a deadpan / gallows humor snarky yet stoic lad - again, I have a favorite character type and I will not lie (it's why I ADORE Penelope so much). John sadly didn't get up to as much as I would have liked, but when he showed up, I tended to adore his scenes. He was quieter and snarkier than his brothers, quick with a quip, but also very observant.
Gordon: I liked how laidback, steady / calm, yet willing to jest Gordon was in the novels and comics. He snarks and pokes at his brothers more than the others, but you often see just how DEEPLY he cares for people, and how worried he can be. He bounced off the others very well, and the comics that focused on him were often some of my favorites.
=================================
26. What they would do if stuck in an elevator with [insert character of your choice from the same fandom]
These sort of questions always tend to confuse me I'm afraid ^^;;
I actively dislike self-inserts, even well done ones, and have never had a character that WAS a self-insert, or a desire to create one.
I just... am not interested in what would happen if I were to interact with a character / were they to interact with me. I want to see the characters interacting with other characters / situations - all of it as in-character as I can get it ^^;;
So for this one I'm afraid I've just got a 'not a clue' for the answer ^^;;

Do people realize how strong Parker is? In a John Theydon novel he picks up Scott, and I think in a few comics, he carried Lady Penelope. Like that man is strong.

I feel that you all need to know that Scott Tracy is a basic bitch who has an iced coffee dispenser in his Thunderbird and that is one of the many reasons that I love him.

Maybe its because of the limitations of the puppets, they couldn't pull this one off, or else it will look goofy X (See that one Captain Scarlet scene where Scarlet punches an agent in "Special Assignment")
And Scott did beat the shiet out of the Hood in one of the John Theydon books, iirc.
Taking the morning to write some more of Hair’s breadth, we are officially at the part where Jeff Tracy socks the Hood straight in the face

It’s time for me to finish my highlights of John Theydon’s Thunderbirds book. I’m sorry that some of the clips are hard to read - this book would not stay open and I didn’t want to hurt the spine ;_;
Tumblr media
^ it’s official: Scott is a hungry boy.
Tumblr media
^ Scoff. SCOFF.
Tumblr media
^ Wait. Scott plays the piano too? I don’t know how I feel about this.
Tumblr media
^ So this is The Hood. I cannot ever hope to write a character intro that... stuffed with such remarkable imagery. Also, the second paragraph just 😱
Tumblr media
^ Scott thinking about food again. I can relate.
Tumblr media
^ John not getting to go on the mission. To the surprise of no one. Also, Tin-Tin asserting her authority as a valuable member of the team.
Tumblr media
^ Context without spoilers: Scott’s been brainwashed and no one has figured that out yet. John gets his theory shot down. Can you even imagine Grandma giving John a scornful look? I can’t *wraps TOS John in a blanket*
But I love that Grandma thinks that no one could possibly mimic his dimple. That sent me.
Also “behaving like a cheap gangster.”
Tumblr media
^ a teeny tiny Virg/Pen moment. I’ll take it.
Tumblr media
^ this was amazing. Penelope changing in her jammies despite having company because it’s her routine to have morning tea in her jammies.
Also, that they would CHEERFULLY DIE for her and Tin-Tin just ripped my soul out.
Tumblr media
^If you ever wondered which Tracy prefers tea to coffee. It’s Gordon. Scott and Virgil had to special request coffee. Also, Scott is eating again. Also also, Virgil and Penelope gesturing to each other while I imagine Gordon drinking tea with his pinky out.

Thunderbirds – Terror from the Stars Audiobook is GO!
It’s the news Thunderbirds fans of all ages have been waiting for. Parker and Lady Penelope, two of the best-loved characters from the hit 60s show, are back!
Yes, Parker and Lady Penelope, along with the Tracy brothers, Jeff Tracy, the evil Hood and the brilliant Brains, can be heard again very soon in the first of an exciting new series of audiobooks coming out from this May. In Thunderbirds: Terror from the Stars the ex-con cockney chauffeur Parker and the stylish aristocrat Lady Penelope, originally voiced by David Graham and Sylvia Anderson, will be brought to life by voice actor and impressionist Jon Culshaw, star of Dead Ringers and Spitting Image, and actress Genevieve Gaunt, also known as Pansy Parkinson in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Wilhelmina ‘Willow’ Moreno Henstridge in the popular soap opera The Royals.
But that’s not all. Jon, a fan of Gerry Anderson since childhood, will also be voicing Jeff Tracy, the head of the Tracy family, who coordinates rescue missions from his futuristic base on Tracy Island. As he says: “I grew up with Gerry Anderson’s shows, so working on this audiobook has been a delight. I also love voicing contrasting characters – and they don’t get much more different than Jeff Tracy and Parker!”
And fans of the still enormously popular original Thunderbirds series are in for another treat. In a charming gesture, the Thunderbirds: Terror from the Stars audiobook includes a message from David Graham, who played the original Parker (along with Brains and Gordon) saying that, in his 96th year, he feels he now deserves a rest and is passing the baton to the new team. As well as Jon and Genevieve, the new line-up includes Wayne Forester, Justin T. Lee, Joe Jameson and Anna Leong Brophy. This audiobook, an adaptation of John Theydon’s 1965 book Thunderbirds, is the first of Anderson Entertainment’s new range of audio versions of classic Gerry Anderson stories from the 1960s and 1970s, thanks to a new licensing deal with ITV Studios. More audiobooks are now in production and will be available soon, including Stingray, Joe 90, Space: 1999, UFO and, of course, even more Thunderbirds stories!
Thunderbirds: Terror from the Stars is available for pre-order from the 11th of April in a four-CD set that includes a behind-the-scenes documentary. There’s also a hardcover reissue of the original book. Both are available exclusively from the Gerry Anderson store (shop.gerryanderson.co.uk), with release due in May. A digital version of the book can be exclusively pre-ordered from Big Finish.
