Jack O’Neill and John Sheppard do appear to have very similar personalities on the surface however I think Jack is like... actually sarcastic whereas John uses sarcasm in an action hero type way, if that makes sense? Jack is just Like That but John has a hero persona to keep up and cocky one-liners feed into it.

john sheppard comes with his wristband, his watch, snacks, his removable jacket, and his emotional support ray bans. his signature unruly hair is actually made with fun fur (also called "eyelash yarn" but that name makes me feel weird lol)

Sheppard got to choose his team, which means that after knowing him for less than a week, he chose McKay to be one of the people who comes with him when he goes offworld, because he already knows how brilliant and valuable he is.

I am going to ramble about a topic near and dear to my heart Stargate Atlantis and how the production and writers did the cast so dirty over the years of production.
Social media and little behind the scene tidbits are very common now to increase engagement. However, SGA ran from 2004-2009. Social media engagement was not the norm and the biggest platform at the time was Facebook. This did not stop some writers and producers from the show shoving cameras in the faces of the cast members during down times making them visibly uncomfortable. It got to the point the Joe Flanigan (John Sheppard, ostensibly the lead) to tell the camera persons to stop it and that they were making everyone uncomfortable.
Next! Rachel Luttrell who played Teyla Emmagan (and is one of the most beautiful women in the world) was nearly booted from the show when she became pregnant. Part of Teyla's character was that she was a kick-ass warrior and a diplomat to the Atlantis expedition representing her people and she had spider-sense powers to feel the bad guys (the wraith). Luckily she stayed on the show, but since the writers room was EXCLUSIVELY MEN and did not know how to write a dynamic woman getting pregnant literally put her career in danger because the writers didn't know how to "write a pregnant woman."
Now, for Jason Momoa aka Ronon (yes this was one of his early gigs) they wanted him to remain completely static as a character. He was slightly above a cave man at times with his speech patterns (a good look for a POC) and when they finally let him get lines he was always intimidating or scary (again cool a look for a POC.) Momoa at one point cut his dreads off and he thought that that would be a good character moment for Ronon too, since he was pretty stagnant. Instead they put him in the most rotted obvious wig, because the producers couldn't stand Ronon changing even a little.

we as a fandom talk about lt colonel war crimes a lot and it's great i love it but i don't think we talk enough about doctor war crimes
Tumblr media
carson commits SO many crimes in the show and we as a fandom do not acknowledge his beautiful crimes enough. he was doing illegal gene manipulation in the third fucking episode and doing experimentation on prisoners by the seventh. he also takes any and all opportunities to point a gun at someone and i for one think we need to acknowledge how absolutely fucking iconic that is of him. absolutely incredible i love him so much

My favorite John thing is when he messes up and talks about himself in third person. "Way to go, John!" Just the way he says it is fantastic

Today is World AIDS day, which makes me reflect on the creative, vibrant and talented generation of people wiped out in their prime in the early days of the scourge – like pioneering American performance artist, photographer, one of the architects of no-budget DIY underground queer cinema and all-round twisted visionary to be mentioned in the same breath as Jean Genet, Andy Warhol, Kenneth Anger, the Kuchar brothers and James Bidgood, that flaming creature Jack Smith (14 November 1932 – 18 September 1989). To grasp the wild world of this “filth elder” and role model for the ages, I would point you to the exemplary 2006 documentary Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis by Mary Jordan, which I watched on YouTube recently – but it has since been yanked down and seemingly isn’t streaming anywhere else! The doc featured a who’s who of American underground culture (like Gary Indiana, Mary Woronov, John Zorn, Mario Montez, Nick Zedd, Judith Malina, Holly Woodlawn and George Kuchar) reminiscing about their encounters with him. Smith was famously uncompromising and curmudgeonly and died destitute. As an exasperated John Waters recalls in the doc, Smith “bit every hand that could have fed him”. For example, Smith loathed the idea of art galleries or museums screening his work (“Who else was going to show ‘em?” Waters asks). However you cut it, Smith was an outrageous original and an integral figure in the aesthetic we now call “camp” or “kitsch.” We are forever in his debt!
