Phyllis Konstam and Edward Chapman in The Skin Game (Alfred Hitchcock, 1931) Cast: C.V. France, Helen Haye, Jill Esmond, Edmund Gwenn, John Longden, Phyllis Konstam, Frank Lawton, Edward Chapman, Herbert Ross, Dora Gregory, Ronald Frankau. Screenplay: Alfred Hitchcock, Alma Reville, based on a play by John Galsworthy. Cinematography: Jack E. Cox. Despite winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932, John Galsworthy is one of those authors nobody reads much anymore, partly because his reputation was eclipsed by the great modernists whom the Nobel committee overlooked, like James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. His series of novels that constitutes The Forsyte Saga came back in vogue for a while in 1967 and again in 2002 when they were adapted for British television, playing on that nostalgia for the good old days of the British class system that more recently made a hit of Downton Abbey. Class, especially the conflict of the landed aristocracy and the new-monied bourgeoisie, was his big theme, and he explored it not only in his novels but also in plays like The Skin Game, which was first performed in 1920 and immediately snapped up for a silent film adaptation. Hitchcock apparently saw the play and liked the idea of turning it into a talkie, wrote the screenplay with his wife, Alma, and even cast Edmund Gwenn and Helen Haye in the roles they had played in the silent film. The problem is that Galsworthy forbade any deviation from the original plot and dialogue, leaving Hitchcock for the most part stagebound. There's occasionally some interesting camerawork, especially in the auction scene in which swish pans are used to build suspense during the competitive bidding over the property that the old-money Hillcrist (C.V. France) wants to keep out of the hands of the self-made industrialist Hornblower (Gwenn). But too often Hitchcock reverts to stage tableaus -- some of them badly blocked -- that show off the melodramatic hamming of some of the actors, as well as some stilted dialogue carried over from the play. There's a long take in which Chloe Hornblower (Phyllis Konstam) confronts Hillcrist's scheming agent, Dawker (Edward Chapman), that particularly exposes Konstam's mannered acting. The plot hinges on Chloe's dark secret, which seems much ado about nothing today: that she once worked as a professional co-respondent in divorce cases before marrying Hornblower's son, Charles (John Longden). But Hitchcock retains Galsworthy's ambivalence about his characters, making neither Hillcrist not Hornblower purely admirable or villainous. We dislike Hornblower for his callous treatment of some old tenants of Hillcrist's after he buys property from the squire and for his willingness to despoil the land with his factories, but we also have to condemn Hillcrist's snobbery and his readiness to drag Chloe Hornblower's name through the mud. As he often did, Galsworthy put his faith in the younger generation, Hornblower's son Rolf (Frank Lawton) and Hillcrist's daughter, Jill (Jill Esmond), who seem fated to bring both houses together, but Hitchcock doesn't quite give these characters room enough in the film version to make that point. He later told François Truffaut that he "didn't make [The Skin Game] by choice, and there isn't much to be said about it," but as so often, Hitchcock was fiddling with the truth. It's not one of his better films, hindered as he was by Galsworthy's restrictions, but there's some meat on it.

The Hidden Truth 1.7 The Guinea Pig (27th August 1964). Written by Martin Woodhouse; dir. John Frankau. Featuring regulars Alexander Knox, James Maxwell, Elizabeth Weaver & Ruth Meyers. Guest starring Jack May, Petra Davies, Peter Halliday & Guy Doleman.
A decompression chamber experiment is carried out at a research station, but the human guinea pig [presumably John Pershore played by Job Stewart] dies. Dr. Henry Fox (James Maxwell) and Dr. Ruth Colliton (Elizabeth Weaver) try to discover the cause of death.
The case also involves the dead man’s wife, Mary Pershore (Petra Davies), and a Treasury official, Edward Hallowes (Jack May).
Other guest stars included Jill Cary as Hilary Curtis, Naomi Chance as Dr Eve Rushton, Guy Doleman as Charles Medwin, Peter Halliday as Taffy Lloyd, and Maureen Davis & Jeremy Longhurst as Sheila & Leonard Garland.
The joint appearance of real-life husband and wife, Jack May and Petra Davies gave the TV pages something to talk about. The Mirror had important domestic concerns, for starters:
ACTRESS Petra Davies and her actor husband, Jack May, had a baby-sitting problem when they both got parts in ITV’s “The Hidden Truth” (8 p.m.)
They had no one to look after their two young children while they were rehearsing and appearing in the programme. Then Petra’s mother helped out. A phone call to her home in Wales brought her to London, and the pair were able to leave the children at home without having to worry.
“The Guinea Pig” is the title of tonight’s story. A decompression chamber experiment is carried out at a research station. It ends with the death of the “guinea pig.”
“The Guinea Pig” was the third and last episode writtenby Martin Woodhouse, who was also responsible the first episode, as well as surviving episode “Cross Examination.” So, expect more dreaded regulars chit-chat and possibly even shippiness, then, as in this one he seems to have sent Dr Fox and Dr Coliton on their own little away-mission...

Jacqueline Kennedy’s recently resurfaced packing list for the fateful autumn trip to Texas she took with her then-husband, President John F. Kennedy, contains plenty of interest for fashion historians.
In the margins of the weekend’s itinerary, which she had written out for her personal assistant, the first lady scheduled the visit outfit by outfit.
For the day of Nov. 21, 1963, her look would be head-to-toe Chanel: a white coat, skirt and blouse, with a black hat atop her head and a gold and navy bracelet on her wrist (“safety pin,” she wrote underneath, perhaps in reference to its clasp).
In the evening, she would don a black velvet dress with satin shoes and white kid gloves. And of course the jewelry had been considered: pearls with a diamond bracelet and earrings. Kennedy was not one to leave room for surprises.
But even the best laid plans can change. The gloves, for one, surfaced on her descent from Air Force One in Houston, paired with the daytime Chanel suit. If she wore the bracelet, it went unseen. And the days that followed would stray much further from the first lady’s notes.
Her bloodstained pink Chanel suit tells more acutely than any other image the story of what happened in Dallas on Friday, Nov. 22.
But the notes she prepared for her personal assistant, Providencia Paredes, read as stage directions for a weekend of political theater and a catalog of the wardrobe that made her the most fashionable first lady of the 20th century, referenced by her successors to this day.
Kennedy was best known, during her time in the White House, for the uniform of her public appearances: the tailored skirt suits, shift dresses, layered pearls, white gloves and pillbox hats photographed around the world.
But her leisure wear — the equestrian gear, swimsuits and cotton summer clothes immortalized in photos of family trips — also became a part of her visual imprint. Many of those signature items were penciled into the itinerary for the Texas trip, including suits and dresses in summery shades of yellow, blue and green, and riding clothes for an appointment at Lyndon B. Johnson’s ranch on Nov. 23.
There are many mentions in her notes of Oleg Cassini, the designer who became Kennedy’s personal dressmaker in 1961: a green wool suit (“for Mex not used”), a white crepe coat, a short pink crepe dress, a long mauve one, an orange coat and dress (“silk — worn in Udaipur, India — on lake”).
Another favorite of the first lady, Gustave Tassell, appears on the packing list for a baby blue dress that Kennedy also wore in India. Her detailed lists, many of which make reference to past manifestations of the dresses, are a view into the mind of a woman who took both image and organization very seriously.
Stacey Bredhoff, the curator of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, described Kennedy as a “meticulous planner” who concerned herself with every detail of ceremonial events: the guest lists, the menus, the seating arrangements, the flowers and of course the clothes.
The museum’s collection contains 95 of her dresses, including the white Chanel suit she wore on Nov. 21 and the orange silk Cassini dress from the state visit to India.
“We don’t have everything that she wore as first lady,” said James Wagner, the Kennedy museum’s exhibit specialist, “but our understanding is that once she left the White House, as far as we can tell, things that she wore at public events or during official travels, she set those aside and didn’t wear them again after 1963 with the intent that she would deed them to the library for our collection and for potential display in our museum.”
Some of the first lady’s best-known garments reside in and around the federal capital. The pink suit is being kept under climate-controlled wraps outside of Washington by the National Archives and Records Administration, barred from public view until 2103. Kennedy’s inauguration dress, by Ethel Frankau of Bergdorf Goodman under her direction, is kept at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
In 2003, Paredes and Mary B. Gallagher, the first lady’s personal secretary, consigned together a number of Kennedy items. Those that sold included some of Kennedy’s square-toe leather shoes, her nightgowns and sleep bonnets, cotton summer dresses, which had not been kept in the best condition. It’s one of the reasons so many of her archived items are seldom seen.
“One thing about the dresses is that they are very fragile, and the best thing you can do to take care of them is to keep them stored in a cool, dark place,” Bredhoff said. “So we’re very careful about how much time they can be out on display, exposed to the light and so on.”
In their thoughtful, organized detail, though, the notes from the Texas trip might say more about the first lady than the clothes ever could.

The Hidden Truth: 1.13 One of the Hampshire Pargeters (8th October 1964). Written by Ludovic Kennedy; dir. John Frankau. Featuring regulars Alexander Knox, James Maxwell, Zia Mohyeddin, Elizabeth Weaver, George Moon & Ruth Meyers. Guest starring Nora Swinburne, William Sylvester, James Bree, William Devlin & Kevin Stoney.
How was Barry Pargeter killed? That's the question facing Professor Lazard (Alexander Knox) when called to give evidence at the Old Bailey before Mr. Justice Caldwell (Anthony Marlowe). But he must sift some gruesome evidence before he can provide the answer.
The police investigating the death are Chief Inspector Greaves (Anthony Sagar) and Sergeant Johnson (Desmond Jordan), who worked with Lazard’s team previously in “Cross Examination.”
[Desmond Jordan and Anthony Sagar as Chief Insp. Greaves & Sgt Johnson in 1.3 “Cross Examination.”]
William Sylvester appeared as Quayle, James Bree as Mr Tripp, William Devlin as Platt-Evans, Kevin Stoney as Nick and Frank Tregear as Usher. Anthony Marlowe, Anthony Sagar and Desmond Johnson, all reprised their roles from 1.3 “Cross Examination.” Nora Swinburne, known for her ‘drawing room’ roles played Mrs Pargeter, which suggests along with the title that this case involved an upper class family. (Nora Swinburne must have been already known to regular James Maxwell - she was closely related to two core people in his theatre group through her marriage to actor Esmond Knight.)
The papers didn’t provide any info on this episode’s plot, so most of the above summary comes via IMBd - but the Mirror did print a brief interview with the writer:
LUDOVIC Kennedy is the author of “One of the Hampshire Pargeters,” tonight’s final episode in “The Hidden Truth” (ITV 8.0).
But this does not mean Mr. Kennedy is turning telly-playwright. “It was just something I did in a rush,” he told me. “I am much too busy working on TV films and documentaries. My only other play was ‘Murder Story,’ which was written for the theatre a few years ago.” (Daily Mirror, Oct 8th)
Again, some clips/sequences have reportedly survived.
This and the previous episode were (along with the first two episodes of Blackmail), were nominated for a BAFTA for Best Drama Series, for producer Stella Richman in 1966. (It’s very possible some previous episodes were nominated in 1965, but the nominees list isn’t available pre-1966.)
(IMBd has 13th Oct as date of broadcast, but their two week break between episodes 11 and 12 is not reflected in any of the contemporary TV schedules in the newspapers I’ve been able to look at: the final episode appears to have gone out on the 8th October 1964.)

“The Guinea Pig” was the third and last episode writtenby Martin Woodhouse, who was also responsible the first episode, as well as surviving episode “Cross Examination.” So, expect more dreaded regulars chit-chat and possibly even shippiness, then, as in this one he seems to have sent Dr Fox and Dr Coliton on their own little away-mission…
