John Broadwood grew up in Oldhamstocks, East Lothian and followed his father’s profession as a carpenter, as a teenager he left Scotland and walked to London to make his fortune he ended up working for a harpsichord maker Burkat Shudi, where he was involved in the finishing of the instruments.
Broadwood married Shudi's daughter and when his father-in-law fell into ill health, took over the running and ownership of the company.
John Broadwood then joined with another Scot, Robert Stodart, and a Dutchman, Americus Backers, to design a piano in the harpsichord case - the origin of the ‘grand piano" They achieved this in about 1777. Before long this piano was outselling the Harpsichord and the company went into full production of this.

A Literary Companion to Stevenson’s “The Wrong Box”
The Wrong Box by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne (Stevenson's stepson) publishing date 1889
When a large sum of money is set to go to one of the two last survivors of a tontine, their offspring take a decided interest.
It came to my attention that some readers encountered difficulty keeping track of the Who's Who of The Wrong Box. What follows is a kind of registry of characters and their identities in the novel. There may be some slight spoilers, but face it: you are going to read it several times anyway. By the way, when Rudyard Kipling was 20 years old, he wrote in a letter to a friend, "I have got R. L. Stevenson's In the Wrong Box and laughed over it dementedly when I read it." Dementedly!
- - -
Major Characters:
Joseph Finsbury, age 71, one of the surviving tontine brothers.
Masterman Finsbury, age 73, one of the surviving tontine brothers.
Morris Finsbury, nephew of the brothers, orphan ward of Joseph Finsbury. Robert Vance, a nom de guerre of Morris.
John Finsbury, nephew of the brothers, orphan ward of Joseph Finsbury. George Vance, or The Great Vance, a nom de guerre of John.
Miss Julia Hazeltine, an unrelated orphan ward of Joseph Finsbury.
Michael Finsbury, solicitor, son of Masterman Finsbury. Mr. Brown, a nom de guerre of Michael. Mr. Dickson, a nom de guerre of Michael. Mr. Appleby, a nom de guerre of Michael.
William Dent Pitman, art and music teacher who is the original intended recipient of the huge box. Mr. Ezra Thomas, a nom de guerre of Pitman.
Gideon Forsyth, a young legal practitioner without much practice. E.H.B., the nom de plume of Forsyth when he wrote a yellowback detective novel in his student days.
Edward Hugh Bloomfield, Forsyth's uncle, also known as "the Squirradical" and "Uncle Ned".
- - -
Minor Characters
Mr. Chandler: a carrier who gives Joseph Finsbury a ride away from the train wreck.
Mr. Watts: proprietor of a public house where Joseph Finsbury spends a night.
Mr. Wickham: client / friend of Michael Finsbury, and a force of chaos.
Messrs. Bell and Judkin: work at Joseph Finsbury's bank.
Mr Semitopolis: Italian art dealer / smuggler, a.k.a. Signor Ricardi.
Broadwood: the piano.
Count Turnow: a completely fictitious person invented by Michael Finsbury.
Teena: Michael Finsbury's Scottish housekeeper.
James Payn, Walter Besant: names of yellowback detective novel heroes.
Mr. Jimson: a nom de guerre of Forsyth.
Mr. Holtum: a former political adversary assaulted by Bloomfield.
Mr. Harker: a young carrier and novice at the pennywhistle.
"Colour Sergeant" Brand: con man / robber.
Mr. Moss: business agent of Michael Finsbury.
Uncle Tim: Pitman's Australian relative.
Guendolen, Harold, Otho: Pitman's children.
- - -
Historical / Literary Persons Alluded to in the Book:
Lorenzo de Tonti: a Banker from Naples credited with inventing the tontine.
Mr. Gladstone: William Ewart Gladstone was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time of the story.
Duke of Wellington: Arthur Wellesley (d. 1852) defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Lord Tennyson: Poet Laureate of Great Britain (d. 1892).
Sir Charles Warren: For the purposes of the novel, was head of the London Metropolitan Police from 1886 to 1888 (d. 1927).
Charoba: Princess of Egypt, as depicted in the 1798 poem "Gebir" by Walter Savage Landor "Past are three summers since she first beheld The ocean; all around the child await Some exclamation of amazement here. She coldly said, her long-lasht eyes abased, Is this the mighty ocean? is this all?"

Mellow Mallows
This beautiful sidewall was one of several designed by Kate Faulkner in the 1880s for the wallpaper company Jeffrey & Co. A member of the Arts and Crafts Movement, her pattern reflects the movement’s interest in simple yet pleasing color schemes and motifs drawn from native British wildflowers. These qualities are also typical of Faulkner’s wallpaper and textiles designs, which include patterns such as Carnation, Peony, and Bramble. The expressive drawing of the flowers, stylized just enough to avoid disturbing the Arts and Crafts distaste for realism, is also typical of her work.
Wallpaper, Carnation, 1880; Designed by Kate Faulkner; block-printed on paper; Victoria and Albert Museum; Given by Mr. Allan F. Vigers
Kate Faulkner was the brother of Charles Faulkner, one of the founders of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., later Morris & Co. She, Charles, and their sister Lucy worked at the firm, the most important in the Arts and Crafts movement, since its founding in 1861, beginning initially as painters of tilework. Her work as a decorator soon diversified to include painting ceramic tableware and designing wallpaper and furnishing fabrics. Her most well-known work was the gesso decoration she executed on a Broadwood & Sons piano commissioned by Alexander C. Ionides, a patron of the firm. The piano itself was designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, who also oversaw the decoration to assure that it fit the interior of Ionides’ drawing room. Nevertheless, Faulkner had a significant role in designing the decoration itself, which is stunning in its richness and vibrancy. Though not as famous as other women artists of the British Arts and Crafts movement such as May Morris, Kate Greenaway, and Phoebe Anne Traquair, Faulkner’s work such as her wallpapers and the Ionides piano indicates she was an equally accomplished and creative individual.
Grand Piano, 1883; Designed by John Broadwood, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and Kate Faulkner for A.C. Ionides; England; oak, stained and decorated with gold and silver-gilt gesso; Victoria and Albert Museum; Given by Mrs. A. C. Ionides
Nicholas Lopes is a student in the History of Design & Curatorial Studies graduate program at the Cooper Hewitt, and is a Master’s Fellow in the Wallcoverings Department.

The piano with the candles on it was owned by the composer Frédéric Chopin. When revolution broke out in Paris in 1848, Chopin and many of his acquaintances fled to England. Pleyel recommended that Chopin place himself in the hands of John Broadwood & Sons, from whom he chose three pianos; one to be shipped to Scotland, one for his lodgings and this for his public performances in England.
Chopin had come to Britain at the invitation of Jane Stirling, a spirited member of an old and wealthy Scottish family, who, with her widowed sister, Katherine Erskine, first met the composer in 1840 in Paris and invited him to stay with her family. In 1848 he spent two and a half weeks as guest of Lord and Lady Torphichen, at Calder House in West Lothian, and at a friends house at 10 Warriston Crescent in Edinburgh. He would have used a Broadwood at concerts in Edinburgh and Glasgow, his Scottish performances were effectively his swansong, he returned to Paris a year later, where he died that year.
