Susie’s work dissolves the space between art and craft practices, positioning weaving at the core of her exploration of aesthetics. Susie is a Bay Area-based artist, and looks not only to Anni Albers but also Sol Lewitt, Agnes Martin, Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly. She studied, worked and continues to create within the lineage of the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College weavers. Images are from the series of ‘Shaded Satin Stripes: ‘Axis’, ‘Suite’, and ‘Whirl’, all hand-dyed linen mounted on Belgian linen, 35” x 25” each for the exhibition ‘Origin Stories’ featuring Susie Taylor + Alexi Antoniadis running thru Oct 15 @johansson_projects in Oakland. The 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, in 2019, gave the artist an opportunity to re-examine the weaving of Anni Albers and Gunta Stölzl and she paid close attention to their use of texture to create surface interest.  Taylor began to draft and sample textured weave structures, on her shaft loom, that would be compatible with each other and other constructions that she often works with.   Tetris Texture Series, using only two colors, demonstrates the beauty of adding texture from weave structure only and the versatility found in the many structural iterations of simple weaves.
