The Occult vs. seemingly useless books

Tonight, someone in a group I run on Facebook, told me a story of how in the 1970s they found a paperback book on "How to be a fortune teller." and to their disappointment it was a guide book on how to be a con artist. For example, it said that teenagers and older people both can be told "I see you have had trouble in love." and there is the old "You lost a loved one. They are standing beside you right now." among other things such as spotting "tells." This person threw out the book in their disappointment. But in reality there IS a use for a book like this in the realm of occultists and paranormal investigations. This sort of book teaches you what the con artists do ans by extension it tells you how to spot their tricks and what they are doing to pull their tricks. There is rarely a truly useless book. When I was studying parapsychology the course provided six text books, one of which was a book on I Ching which I hated. The author put too much of their own opinions and biases into the book and by the time I was done reading it, I really did not like that person but it gave me a lot of insight into how that person, and people like them, might think. In a more dark side of things, there is a medieval grimoire called "The Trifold Coercion of Hell" or "The Black Raven" by Doktor Johann Georg Faustus. Faustus (Latinized name) is the historic figure, and supposed sorcerer, that the character of legend of Faust is supposedly to have been based on. Both Christopher Marlowe and Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe both wrote versions of the Faust legend. Personally I prefer Goethe's version because it's a two parter and in part 2, Faust's soul is actually saved. Now in the case of The Black Raven, this grimoire may be the first reference to the demon Mephistopheles, who has become a fixture of the Faust legend and is often mistaken as an alternate name of Satan himself. (They are not actually the same character). And, as you might expect, the grimoire is full of stuff that many would consider black magick. According to Wikipedia there are records of Johann Faustus being banned from Ingolstadt University for being a "N-gr-mancer" (black magick user. I censored the old word for black because social media mistakes it as a racial slur.) and he was also banished for allegedly being a s-d-mite (old not-polite word for LGBTQAI+). Now, if you look at his old Grimoire carefully (available online translated into English in PDF format) many of the spells actually teach you how to bind and ward against various demons. You just have to learn to read between the lines. The bulk of it is a book of protections against the infernal as opposed to actually invoking them. Each invocation spell is layered with means of warding and defense that can be implemented on its own. Similar is true for The Key of Solomon and especially The Lesser Key of Solomon. One of my favorite things in the old Black Raven grimoire is there is a spell for making a cloak or coat levitate like a magick carpet. This is similar to a scene in Goethe's Faust Part 1 when Mephisto and Faust leave by means of a similar conveyance. But that's not why I love it. What I love is the warning that comes with the spell. It warns to make sure the window is open "Lest there be disaster." The implication is clear. Faust tried the spell and slammed right into the closed window like a cartoon coyote ("Suuuper Genius!") So anyway, my point is this. In the realm of the occult there is rarely (if ever) a truly useless book. Even if what you found is a manual on conning people you can reverse its purpose to learn how to spot the con artists.

Gonna talk about the paintings in EG real quick, cuz I was curious to see if there’s any indication about Cara’s animal (if she does follow the same pattern as the current students):

(It’s under the cut since I have no idea how big the screenshots are gonna be since I’m on desktop. I wasn’t able to find all the painting names either, but I’ll edit this again later if I do find them.)

Potential Candidates for Cara’s Animal (if assumed that there’s no repeats):

Painting: La maja vestida by Francisco Goya -> Known for being a part of a pair, with one in clothes while the other isn’t. Much about this painting is pretty unclear. -> Painted around the frame of 1800-1805

(Damon: The woman’s mask bore the unmistakable nose and “horns” of a giraffe. Definitely not a live one, though) Found in dining hall.

Okay, so I think this one’s the most likely, since there’s a fairly complex pattern on Cara’s sweater, which could mimic that of a giraffe. This is also the only painting that Damon comments on the animal being dead on (since it’s the only one with an animal skull). My sib also pointed out that the eyes are covered on the animal skull, so it could be a reference to Cara’s eyes being bleached. So, I’d say this one’s the most likely to be Cara’s animal.

Painting: The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer --> Painted around 1657-1658

(Damon: ...This painting was one I recognised. I’m pretty sure my high school team had to research it for a debate. Whatever we were trying to argue, I scrubbed it from memory. Needed to make room for next debate somehow. One thing’s for sure: the woman in the painting didn’t wear a mask. And the liquid she’s pouring...it definitely wasn’t blood.) Found in dining hall.

Initially, I thought this was a nod to Tozu, but the way the antlers are depicted make it seem more likely this might be an elk/deer. It’s odd though since I think this painting’s the only one with an alteration (changing the liquid to blood) if you don’t count the animal masks. Since this doesn’t seem to apply to the other students, I’d say this one also has a fair shot of being Cara’s animal.

Painting: Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci --> Painted around 1489-1491

(Damon: Forget about the mask, what’s that weasel-looking thing?) Found in dining hall.

The shape of the animal mask is too vague to really discern a guess? I was thinking it could be a black fox cuz of its ears while my sib thought it looked more like a wolf, but it could probably be anything really. Anyways, this one’s a complete mystery to me since Damon’s busy focusing on the ermine in her arms, so I’m leaving it up as a potential candidate.

Paintings I’m Not Too Sure On:

Painting: Jo, The Beautiful Irishwoman by Gustave Courbet --> There are four versions of this painting --> Painted around 1865

(Damon: Talk about the stuff of nightmares... Is she supposed to be a hyena? The ears are really big, though. Maybe it’s a wild dog?) Found in dining hall.

Hyenas are a bit different from coyotes, so I’m not sure if this is supposed to represent Jett’s animal or not? If it is, I’m a little worried about the facial expression it’s making.

Painting: (Can’t find it)

(Damon: Whatever bird this mask is supposed to resemble, it’s a freaky looking one.) Found in the hallway before the dining hall by itself.

Like Damon said, it’s incredibly hard to tell on what bird this is. It could be Eloise (swan) if we had to apply it to someone? But to me, it resembles more of a cartoon penguin, so this could be a previous survivor maybe...?

Most likely linked to Ulysses. The painting itself is rather vague so I’ve had absolutely no luck finding it.

Overall, I don’t think the paintings themselves hold much relevance? But anyways:

The first two paintings (with the giraffe and elk) are the only two to have a light blue cloth draped over them. This is especially weird since the original paintings don’t have anything resembling that. However, if you assume that one of them does represent Cara, it’s possible that all deceased students will have their paintings include the cloth and have their masks transform into skulls in the future. (Though, that would mean that the academy will likely have more paintings shown in the future of previous students’ animals, so I’m curious to see if this thought will holds up.)

If Cara does represent either the giraffe or elk, this changes the theory I initially had on the potential victims + culprits for the upcoming chapters, since I was speculating that both the victim and culprit would fall under the Seven Sins in the order of Dante’s Inferno (based on their animal symbolism, especially if you assume Tozu’s the first culprit). Instead, I can now see it being the Seven Sins and Virtues. (This bullet point is just mostly speculation rambles on my part, but I guess Chapter 1 will either support or refute this entirely.)

The painting choices seem a little too specific, so I could see their histories being linked to the characters it’s trying to portray in a sense. However, the lack of info makes it difficult to exactly say what just yet.

février 2023 - afterthought

ce mois de février était assez intense et difficile ngl. je fais face à un nouveau pays encore plus loin de mes proches. le stress du démenagement étant terminé, l’excitation de découvrir de nouveaux lieux a désormais pris place. j’ai des semaines très chargées donc parfois du mal à voir le temps qui passe. c’est quand je fais l’effort de me poser avec un contenu qui soit en dehors de mon écran que je me rend compte des minutes. j’ai aussi appris que mon père avait eu un problème de santé, et la distance n’a fait que amplifier l’impression de ne pas être assez présente pour lui. mais il va mieux, donc pour lui, j’ai décidé d’aller mieux. n’oubliez pas de dire aux gens qui vous entourent que vous les aimez. 

ce que j'ai fait?

je dois dire que les week-ends étaient chargés mais ca m’a fait du bien à l’esprit de voir des paysages différents que ceux que j’ai vu au canada.

j’avais très envie d’aller dans le désert, et je n’ai pas été decue par antelope valley. on s’est promené puis on a gravi un petit mont pour mieux apprécier le coucher de soleil. note à moi même : je devrais toujours prendre une veste quand je fais ce genre d’activité car quand la nuit tombe, les degrès deviennent plus proches du négatifs que de la chaleur écrasante qu’on peut ressentir en altitude et en plein effort.

le lendemain, on est allés manger un brunch a republique puis c’était clash at the coliseum, une cours de nascar. il faisait froid mais l’ambiance était excitante. c’était drôle de faire des activités vraiment différentes dans la même journée. je dois dire que la population de la course de nascar n’était pas la même que celle de république, mais c’est aussi le charme de vivre dans une grande ville où ces deux lieux sont à 15 min l’un de l’autre.

j’ai aussi commencé à prendre des cours de thai. c’est curieux, mais le fait d’avoir déménagé dans des pays différents m’incite plus ou moins à avoir un retour aux racines. je ne l’ai pas dit à ma mère car j’aimerai la surprendre et lui parler de manière fluide. je ne sais même pas si elle remarquera car elle a toujours pensé que je comprenais le thai. sara, ma prof, vit a bangkok, et elle est très drôle et didactique. elle m’enseigne pleins de petites anecdotes sur la vie thailandaise et la mentalité, même si j’étais plutôt familière avec la plupart des faits. ca me fait une pause aussi dans ma journée car je dois m’arreter de travailler et etre totalement focus à ce moment la. c’est parfois stressant mais ca m’apprend à organiser mon temps. 

j’ai aussi découvert une librairie près de chez moi qui s’appelle wacko. c’était une sorte de devanture couverte de magazines et d’objets retro donc ca m’a intriguée. l’intérieur était plein de livres d’art, de graphisme, sur los angeles etc…. j’y ai passé une bonne heure avant de m’apercevoir que je devais d’abord finir les livres que je me suis achetée récemment. 

on est aussi allés faire une petite hike avec rafael, kim et johannes le jour du superbowl. c’était chouette de voir le griffith park et des paysages à juste 15 min de chez moi. j’adore l’observatoire griffith.

j’ai découvert calabasas et son erewhon. j’ai aussi croisé un coyote. je n’en ai jamais vu de ma vie et je ne m’attendais pas à en voir aussi proche. je ne l’ai pas vu au erewhon après. 

on a visité la ville de santa barbara, qui était une sorte de venice bourgeois. des palmiers, des boutiques cool et beaucoup de vins. il y avait beaucoup de vent, et la plage était vide, mais on a pu compter sur la présence d’un pélican pour occuper notre après midi. on a aussi découvert la charmante petite ville de solvang, qui est un petit disneyland danois perdu au milieu des montagnes. c’était très curieux de voir autant de moulins et de pick up au même endroit.

dans une veine plus citadine, il pleuvait le dernier week-end de février, j’en ai profité pour aller au lacma avec kim. il y avait une belle expo sur le creative coding, et l’art transcendental. c’etait intéressant de voir ces sujets assez uniques exposés dans un musée.

ces derniers jours, il a beaucoup plu, donc j'en ai profité pour rattraper mes lectures et me mettre à jour sur la formule 1. parfaite transition pour..

ce que j’ai regardé?

j’ai vu la série dopesick qui parle de la crise de l’oxycontin créée par la famille sackler. c’était très bien réalisé, et le cast était incroyable. assez surprise de voir les conséquences de cette histoire. j’ai bien aimé qu’ils lient des histoires intimes à un drame de grande envergure. j’ai adoré revoir rosario dawson et michael keaton aussi

tendou: Yoda CBT remix (i linked it if you want to listen), ok but seriously, i think money machine by 100 Gecs. tendo is so chaotic and i think his music taste reflects that. he cannot listen to music without dancing or singing, and he always plays his music on full volume (hearing? what’s that?) tendo never gets the aux cord, because the last time they gave it to him, the speakers almost broke.

goshiki: Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. this little dork omg i really don’t have an explanation for this, it just fits and i take no criticism on this because y’all know it’s true.

shirabu: Cigarette Ahegao by Penelope Scott. semi introduced him to this song and he pretened he didn’t like it but he’s secretly obsessed. i think he generally doesn’t like music but this song- this song is such a vibe that he has to like it. (anyways yeah go listen to this song its so good)

kita: Animal by Neon Trees. he isn’t really open about listening to music, he only listens to his songs when he is alone and when he has earbuds in, and if someone walks up to him to talk, he takes his earphones out (we stan a respectful boy). so yeah, he isn’t a big fan of music, but he still likes to listen from time to time.

aran: You Know It by Colony House. he will never listen to music in front of anyone because whenever he hears this song, he has to sing, and he doesn’t like singing in front of people (the miya twins are annoying he can’t do anything in front of them🙄), but yeah, this songs really good we stan this man’s music taste.

atsumu: Girls in the Hood by Megan Thee Stallion. this man LOVES this song like- he is obsessed. if you ask him something, he will literally reply with “can’t talk right now, doing hot girl shit” and he just walks away and ur just like- what the fuck bro. anyways yeah he thinks he’s a bad bitch but he really is just a dork.

suna: 505 by The Arctic Monkeys. yeah, the basic choice would probably be “why’d you only call me when you’re high”, but i feel like he would like this song better because it starts off kinda vibey, and then it goes into this great guitar bit, and just- the v i b e s so yeah i think he really likes this shit.

osamu: cooking podcasts. like he literally doesn’t listen to music, just shit about cooking. atsumu makes fun of him for it and he is just like “bitch shut up and go do ur hot girl shit 😐” and just walks away and keeps on listening to his cooking shit. (we stan this petty bitch)

saeko: E-GIRLS ARE RUINING MY LIFE! by CORPSE and Savage Ga$p. this is self explanatory, she just is a bad bitch and this is what bad bitches listen to 😌 she def has played this song while getting it on with someone.

terushima: Bust It Open by Lil’ Wil. we all know terushima listens to these thirst trap songs and tries to do the tik tok dances that are associated with them. he probably posts videos to these songs on tik tok and they get a good amount of likes (cough cough he has a following of many thirsty girls).

sakusa: 24 hours of nothing yeah he doesn’t listen to music he just puts this on with headphones so people won’t bother him. he finds the silence relaxing and hates it when people interrupt him (cough cough atsumu)
