The abyss
Exclusive, first images from the Swedish disaster movie "The Abyss"
Moviezine meets director Richard Holm in the editing room: "It's incredible that we get to do something like this"
It's cockily called Sweden's first real disaster movie. This autumn we'll get to see if the budget of 90 million kr and an ambitious vision from an experienced action movie director can shake up the Swedish movie industry and the audience.
Moviezine visited SF studios where director Richard Holm is in the middle of the editing process of the special effects heavy movie "The Abyss". He explains how he got the idea for the movie. "SF called me and asked "can't we make a disaster movie" so I said "well, we have Kiruna! They are moving the whole city because it's too close to the mine. So the pitch became "what if you don't movie it before the mine collapses?"
A clear concept that has true elements triggered my fantasy, Holm says.
There are collapses every once in a while. There are over a hundred small earthquakes of at least 2,5 on the Ritcher scale. And all you need as a creator is a what if. What if one of these quakes eould uncover an unknown fault under the city.
In addition the playfield is fun since you are moving a whole city. Not alot of people know that. So you are presenting a background story like with "the wave"
The Norwegian disaster movies the wave, the quake and the tunnel has undoubtedly inspired the abyss.
The first clip we are allowed to watch points towards an ambitious Scandinavian movie.
The audience will perhaps be more used to see the white House blow up or the streets of New York get destroyed but for the first time the disaster genre has reached a swedish town.
Family drama in the center
Richard Holm explains that he wrote the script with his oldest son Robin which made the experience even more special and personal. He also talks about the big budget of 90 million. "So we are not just tearing down a light post and that's it"
Who does Tuva Novotny play?
When we began our resarch we quickly came across the mountain mechanics, reaponsible for the security in the mine. We read about female mechanics working in the mine and that inspired the character Frigga.
Frigga lives in Kiruna and has worked in the mine her whole life. She lost her dad in a mining accident where an explosion went wrong. It has made her determined to never let it happen again. She's merciless about the security. She's also married to the manager of the mine, Tage (Peter Franzen) and they have different interests. He doesn't want her to close the mine. He wants to keep production running.
Currently Frigga and Tage are in the middle of a divorce and she has found a new man. In the beginning of the movie Dabir (Kardo Razzazi) shows up and we learn that she has not yet signed the papers for the divorce like she promised. The hopes are that the family drama will be just as heartfelt as the disaster.
Just like with the movie "Titanic" we wanted to find a drama that is stronger than the disaster. So that you care for he characters when everything goes down.
Frigga and Tage also have two children, Simon and Mika who are tired of their parents. In the beginning of the movie they are about to celebrate Simon’s birthday but he is missing. Noone knows where he is. But Frigga and Tage have to leave for the mine where there's been an alarm set off.
They find the fualt but everything collapses and they can't warn anyone about what's going to happen. That's the beginning of the story.
we are not making a Hollywood movie in Hollywood manner.
You've made movies like Johan Falk that are very popular. Yet there has not been many swedish action movies after that. Why do you think that is?
because there's no budged not experience. But thanks to the technology we will see more and more of that in Sweden. Norway hss done several. And we also need to find stories that are rooted in our own culture. We are not making a Hollywood movie in Hollywood manner.
What is fun is that we have manged to keep it somewhat realistic. You want to feel "could this happen" it feels nerve-racking.
I think it is the reason why we are making this movie. We found a local story that won't feel fake.
And I need to ask about the title. You realise that James Cameron already made a movie with that name?
Haha, but it's one of his leadt famous movies. I don't even think it's on blu-ray. But of course we knew. There were some alternatives but the abyss is a very fitting name. I liked Cameron's but I think mostly older people have seen that movie.
The cast also consists of Felicia Maxime, Edvin Ryding, Göran Gillinger and Angela Kovac

The Grande Mermaid (Unexpected Musicals) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Although the pun of trading "little" for "grande" was too good to pass up, the PattyCake guys also did a great job of weaving together Ariana's lyrics to create a fresh take on the classic fairy tale. Not even a natural disaster could stop this project from being completed.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — The Grande Mermaid
performers: Emma Dahlin (Ariel / additional vocals); Jean Paul Acocella (Eric); Emoni Wilkins (Ursula / additional vocals); Rachel Copeland-Evans (Vanessa); Brayshawna Bates, Anna Ricks, Alex Mansoori, Lee Markham, Cristina Hernandez, Damon Keith, Deanna Quintero, Nina Neubauer, & Matthew Manchigiah (wedding guests); Ryan Simpson, Tony Wakim, & Gina Varchetto (additional vocals)
original songs / performers: all songs by Ariana Grande – "Into You"; [1:25] "One Last Time"; [2:05] "Problem", feat. Iggy Azalea; [2:26] "Greedy"; [3:20] "Moonlight"; [4:05] "Dangerous Woman"; [4:50] "Break Free", feat. Zedd
written by: "Into You" by Ariana Grande, Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Alexander Kronlund, & Ilya Salmanzadeh; "One Last Time" by David Guetta, Savan Kotecha, Giorgio Tuinfort, Rami Yacoub, & Carl Falk; "Problem" by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Amethyst "Iggy Azalea" Kelly, & Ariana Grande; "Greedy" by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Alexander Kronlund, & Ilya Salmanzadeh; "Moonlight" by Ariana Grande, Victoria McCants, Tommy Brown, & Peter Lee Johnson; "Dangerous Woman" by Johan Carlsson, Max Martin, & Ross Golan; "Break Free" by Anton "Zedd" Zaslavski, Max Martin, & Savan Kotecha
arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 26 January 2018
My favorite bits:
reframing "Into You" to be about the whole human world rather than a specific person
the dramatic rescue sequence
Ursula's feigned sympathy, followed by the fantastic riffs and belts as she casts her spell
the ambient ♫ "sha-la-la" ♫ backing vocals from "Kiss the Girl" under "Moonlight"
seamlessly passing the lead on "Dangerous Woman" from Ursula to Vanessa, but with Ariel's voice emanating from the pendant
using "Break Free" as the music for disolving both of Ursula's spells, returning Ariel's voice and Eric's autonomy
Trivia:
Filming for a large portion of this video was delayed due to Hurricane Irma, which severely damaged their beach location and made it inaccessible for several months.
Ariel's tail and top were created by MerNation, Inc.
Urusla's costume was created by Jonathan Shane Ferrell from Makeup and Creative Arts, who they'd worked with on several previous projects.
Emma has reprised her role in the Princess Academy series, as well as for PattyCake's original song "Fish Out of Water" and a cover of "Part of Your World" that they released to coincide with the live-action Little Mermaid movie.
Both Emoni and Rachel have reprised their respective roles in PattyCake's Villains Lair series.
The guys had met Emoni when she was a member of Ten, who competed against VoicePlay on the fourth season of The Sing-Off. She subsequently joined the boys for the 2014 Sing-Off tour.
Layne and Tony had previously recorded an excerpt of "Problem" as part of VoicePlay's "Aca Top 10 – Summer Hits 2014" countdown.

Where can you find that Johan Falk series?
As someone (a Hispanic) who's been learning some Swedish and been seeing all these gif sets of the show, I'm pretty intrigued to look for it.
That, and the first movie of Snabba Cash.

What is it like, for you, to live in Sweden? Swedish cinema is great from what I've watched so far (mostly Bergman, though, which I guess is expected) and the language is really beautiful. Could you recommend some music or movies from your country? Iirc, the only Swedish singer I know is Monica Zetterlund, because if the album she recorded with Bill Evans (also abba, of course, but I don't like their music... at all .-.)
Hi! I don’t really know! I’ve always lived here so for me, it’s not living in Sweden, but just living. I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I love crime/thriller shows like Bron/The Bridge, Beck, Wallander, Johan Falk and so on. For music, I like the artists Silvana Imam, Sabina Ddumba, Joy, Laleh and the pair Rebecca & Fiona.

Kinnaman's transformation - now he tells the truth
published April 25, 2018 at 16.34
Joel Kinnaman is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood right now.
He plays the lead in the Netflix series "Altered Carbon" - which is considered to be the most expensive first season in a series ever.
At the same time he has been in hard training and completely changed his body.
"I embrace all kinds of pressure. There are lots of things that are scary with what I do - at least for me”, he says.
He is thinner than you think, especially after watching Netflix's major investment "Altered Carbon", where Joel Kinnaman, 38, plays the lead role.
Kinnaman trained for six months, three to five hours a day before the recording had even started, all to create the physical appearance that Joel Kinnaman sought to "really embrace the role".
Martial arts, gymnastics and stunt training were on schedule, just like a strict diet. This continued for ten months to record "Altered Carbon".
When I ask the British actor James Purefoy, 53, how it was working with Kinnaman he shines up saying, "Joel is not human."
- He approached everything around the series with beautiful elegance and with respect for all actors. That he only ate seeds for ten months, it's a completely different story. Or, once a week he ate like a maniac.
- In any case, he looks amazing and he watched everything that happened during the recording. As said, Joel is not human.
Joel Kinnaman broke through in "Johan Falk"
Joel Kinnaman got a big Swedish breakthrough with the "Johan Falk" films. Shortly thereafter came the first of a total of three "Snabba Cash" movies.
Joel Kinnaman became even bigger.
Then he got the role of Stephen Holder.
The TV series "The Killing" was based on the Danish "Crime". Mireille Enos and Kinnaman did the main roles. After two seasons, the series was released by American AMC. Then Netflix became the savior of the need: the streaming giant pumped money into the series that could continue for another two seasons.
At the same time, Joel Kinnaman's star began to rise in Hollywood: He was starring in a new version of RoboCop, standing side by side with Liam Neeson in "Run All Night" and the same year he was spared Kevin Spacey in the "House of Cards", synthesis he next to Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto in the "Suicide Squad".
Richard Holm directed several of the films in the "Johan Falk" series and recalled how Joel Kinnaman was working.
"You once felt that this guy has star quality, a charisma that was not used to people at that time," Holm says.
Gives the lead in the new Netflix bet
Netflix's major initiative "Altered Carbon" is based on Richard K. Morgan's novel and is about Takeshi Kovac's role figure, which Joel Kinnaman plays.
He is brought to life for centuries after his death to investigate the murder of the world's most wealthy man. In the series's future dystopia, human consciousness has been digitized, which allows physical bodies - here called cases - to be compared to disposable articles.
Since physical bodies are interchangeable, there is the real value of a person in his "brain crest stack", the digital consciousness. When Takeshi Kovacs wakes up after his prison sentence, his "brain crest stack" has been placed in Joel Kinnaman's body.
- I've done some pretty big movies, but never saw such recording sites as they built for "Altered Carbon". Some were as big as three football plans and as a living city with shops and restaurants, says Joel Kinnaman when we meet in Paris and continue later:
"I'm drawn to science fiction because I love moving to a new world and fantasizing how it would be to live there. With "Altered Carbon" I had to do it really.
American media have described "Altered Carbon" as the most expensive first season of a television series ever. If did the main role-holder Joel Kinnaman make extra nervous? He answers directly:
"I embrace all kinds of pressure. There are lots of things that are scary with what I do - at least for me. What I'm doing is a lot about meeting their fears and involving mass discipline and hard work. Therefore, I'm looking for projects where the press is big, because it makes it easier to face those fears and to be disciplined.
Once you have pushed yourself to a certain point, do you have to push yourself even more next time?
- Yes, and I think it's a healthy way to live my life. I think it's important that the type of ten percent of one's life is beyond your comfort zone and that you continue to push yourself to learn new things to achieve the goals you want to achieve.
"I try to live even when I do not have a movie or series that I'm working with. It may be that I learn a new martial arts or surfing, but I want it to be an ongoing process where I learn new things all the time - it also keeps you humble.
JOEL KINNAMAN
Age: 38.

Also do the lead in the upcoming movie "Three Seconds", based on Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström's novel "Three Seconds". Rosamund Pike and Clive Owen are also in the role list.
