Warning: Even though it’s been over 20 years since the series has aired, there are Dawson’s Creek spoilers below. 

OKAY SO 

I’ve been watching Dawson’s Creek and even though I have yet to finish the last episode of season 4 I got super depressed and skipped ahead to season 6 so I could see some wonderful future moments of Joey and Pacey because they're my OTP. 

ANYWAYS I’ve seen the finale and even though it ended the way I wanted to I didn’t get to SEE IT HAPPEN. I haven’t seen the extended cut or anything but I looked it up and there are no scenes with Joey REALLY telling Pacey she chose him???  Like she says she doesn’t want to be let off the hook, then gets interupted, then leaves THEN ITS A SCENE WITH DAWSON AND then it’s their happy in the future moment which I’m guessing is only a few weeks or months later. 

I wanted to see Pacey ecstatic she chooses him, I want to see him finally be happy, to FINALLY get the girl without insecurity, I want to see how Dawson reacts and NOW IT’S 20+ YEARS LATER and the closest we’ll ever get is maybe a reboot mini series? But even then if they get Kevin to go back and write it he’s going to make Joey and Pacey be divorced... Which like separated fine?? But they’ve been through enough. And he also sees Dawson as not romantically involved with anyone and on that tortured artist path? As if he can’t be happy because Joey is his be all and end all that isn’t film making. 

SO IN CONCLUSION I am eternally sad and also content at the same time and I will eventually watch all the episodes. 

I wasn’t going to spoil it for myself but I figure spoilers don’t really exist when the show has been off the air for 16 years.

Lately I just notice that in TV shows that the girl usually end with the boy that deserve more (with the hardest past or that suffered more)like a compensation for the boy , I ship bughead, delena and joeyxpacey ( I don't think that it's the case but this ships are usually used as examples of this, but after say things to justify what boy should get the girl "archie/dawson/stefan was her first love should end together" or "jug/arc always been there for her") but there's something that don't ma

I’m not 100% sure who you’re saying is saying that? The shippers? Writers? And, a disclaimer: I did not watch The Vampire Diaries so I don’t know a lot about that ship. 

I don’t think it has anything to do with who’s suffered more I think it’s more along the lines of people love an underdog. Jughead and Pacey aren’t who they are simply to have a tragic backstory (and to be honest, Joey and Betty both have messy family dynamics too), they’re the snark to the All American Best Friend. They’re the sarcastic quip to their BFF’s earnestness. They’re the contrast. It’s a weird thing where male creators self-insert into the main character and it backfires because they’re writing what they think women want and what happens is they seem to almost stumble into writing the underdog best friend purely for the female gaze. And we love that character because of it. 

Jughead being popular isn’t because Cole Sprouse is Hot™ (i’m sure some like him because he’s objectively attractive and that’s fine, get your kicks, y’all), it’s because he’s relatable. Archie is decidedly less so. Jughead respects Betty and treats her as an equal (this was true of pacey x joey too, for the people who don’t know, the difference in the way he treated joey vs the way dawson did is night and day). Jughead has a tragic backstory, sure, there’s lots of suffering but people like him because it’s never held him back. 

If white male writers in their 40s and up don’t get why that makes a character more relatable than one who has parents who always support them and always lands on their feet no matter what they do then I can’t help them. It’s because Jughead always takes the hits, it’s because he always has to fight, it’s because he’s always got to work a little harder than everyone else that people root for him. These self-insert male mains? God love them, the writers want us to love them so much but they’re writing a fantasy nice guy that too many women have bad experiences with. 

The guy who mansplains to you or condescends to you (i am not saying archie does this to betty, just guys in general) or tells you that you’re perfect but gee golly, wouldn’t you know? You’re still somehow not perfect for him. The guy who is a good friend, maybe, but not a good partner. Betty steamrolls Archie. Maybe that looks like feminism to some people but I think more people think Jughead loving Betty and still calling her out on her nonsense is what she really needs. Archie is...simple. That’s not a bad thing! Simple guys are not the issue here. It’s more like, is this simple guy good for Betty? And I say no. It’s why I do think Archie and Veronica will end up together, I think Veronica thrives with Archie’s simplicity, it calms her in a way that she needs and Betty needs the sort of stimulation that Jughead offers her. 

I don’t doubt Archie will be there for Betty. I’ve never said he doesn’t care about her, I think he does. I think he does it in a way that reminds us he still thinks she’s 6 years old and he can’t decide if he wants to fuck her or if he wants her to be his mother. Which, for their history, makes sense. She’s always taken care of everything, she’s always been the fixer. Archie doesn’t need a fixer. And Betty’s fixer isn’t Archie. 

I just think Jughead has proven, time and time again, that he has Betty’s best interest at heart and understands her in a way that Archie isn’t capable of. 

I think, perhaps, the definition of what a “nice guy” is needs to change before we can have a productive conversation on what women find attractive. 

As for the first love thing, that’s stupid. Archie isn’t Betty’s first love. First loves are the people you date. The ones you take your firsts with. Archie is Betty’s first real crush maybe. First love? That’s Jughead. Every first step you take with someone, she took with Jughead, so, I mean, sure, they can say Betty had feelings for Archie—she did. No one is denying that. But that still doesn’t make him her first love. I definitely do not consider my first big crush and my first love the same even though both ended with me moving on. And trust me, if you asked me which had a bigger impact on my life, it’s not the guy I had a years long crush on until I was 15, it’s the guy I dated for more than a year when I was 16/17. 

I mean, people can feel what they want to. They can say so and so should end up with whoever because they say so all day long and all I’m going to hear is they want what they want because they want it. Which is fine, that’s how shipping works. I think it’s gross to think someone earned someone or they should get that person because they suffered. Anytime I hear someone say that, I assume they’ve never been in a real relationship and are going through some things so good luck to them.
