józef and hao used to go to the same high school and had a summer job together as teenagers, and then began dating, but hao ran away from home after a bad fight with his parents and an argument with józef (he was raised in an abusive home). his parents called the police on him, and because of a mix of survival instincts, fight response and undiagnosed intermittent explosive disorder, he ends up getting into a physical fight with the cops and getting jailed. he was roughly twenty-five by this point.

while hao is away, józef marries and has joey (robin using józef and joey being father/son format; fork found in kitchen) and his wife is a stay-at-home mom. he works at some nature reserve park place he and hao used to go to while they were younger (they carved their names into a tree there) for a while, before it shut down. he then began to work at the local coffee shop that again, he and hao used to always go to (he never liked the coffee there, or the tea, it was too sweet for his liking, but hao always liked it.) hao finds him there and józef comes out to his wife as gay, she comes out as aroace, but they don’t have the profits for a divorce so they’re technically married, but józef finally works up the courage to talk to hao again, and then hao becomes step father of the year or something to joey. (he doesn’t like joey at first because he both didn’t meet him until it was christmas and he came down to celebrate and he was disrespectful to józef in his eyes.)

joey and anthony have the same lives as they do in canon, with those little tweaks. joey is an ex-hamilfan and he defended thomas jefferson miku binder when it came out. his old tumblr posts still haunt him.

due to past controversy with the phaethon after someone who narrowly survived percely queensley’s murders spoke out, ardess stopped doing the phaethon to maintain their reputation. the entire incident was covered up.

vincent is a visual arts minor as well as a bio major (i don’t know why i included this i just think about this a lot)

portia doesn’t like vincent but she doesn’t do anything but be unsettled by him — she can’t really do anything because they’re her girlfriend’s friend and friend’s boyfriend. he always thought he was weird and ‘seemed like he would kill someone’ as well as thinking he was creepy because of his body language and such, and upon confessing these concerns to beatrix (she wanted to tell quincy, but she didn’t want to upset them), beatrix told her plainly that vincent is autistic but he probably would kill somebody. (in a half-joking manner of course.) she also thinks vincent is weird for the fact he’s a stoner, but cant say anything because beatrix is also a stoner, and she knows it’s her stereotyping him — she’s quite aware of this stuff, but sometimes she catches the undertones of what she says a bit too late. she knows her not liking him isn’t really justified, but he gives her the creeps. it makes her feel quite guilty.

portia hung around cliques (like. think of chavs, or whatever y’all have in america, but in some dreary new england college) to try and fit in, but she would by no means take part in any of the bullying and stuff. after she was outed she was kicked out of her social circle.

ambrose and portia went to the same high school and they vaguely know each other.

instead of being the king’s children, rowan and maya are instead the children of a politician. jason is a security guard instead of a knight, rowan got disowned, louis is a secretary instead of a baronet and maddox is just a regular person. they met maya via rowan.

maddox is an ex-convict. they were arrested for helping rowan with one of his “plans” to run away from his dad and shit, as rowan was a minor at the time (seventeen) and they were twenty-one.

magic still exists, YAY.

jason is a trans guy, louis is the token cis guy, rowan is agender, maya is transmasc and demibigender, and obviously maddox is nonbinary.

louis struggles with eating disorders (as a replacement for the famine in canon). with rowan this behaviour was encouraged, with jason he was helped to recover.

rowan’s mom committed suicide after finding out his dad cheated on her with maya’s mom and had been since before maya was born. rowan (rightfully) blames his dad for this.

how they all connect:

rowan and maya’s father is a senator and friends with ambrose’s father. maya tried to be respectful to ambrose before he transitioned, but they never had common interest. after he transitioned, she realised she was genderqueer herself, but she never came out. she was nicer to ambrose because of it. he never liked her. rowan never liked ambrose in general.

maddox and beatrix went to the same high school and dated for a bit. they ended on good terms and are still friends.

vincent and joey are tumblr mutuals. they end up meeting after the Group (beatrix, portia, quincy, vincent) go to watch isttvg in the cinema and he recognises joey while exiting the cinema.

portia knows maya via beatrix, she thinks that she’s nice.

portia and anthony follow each other on instagram. she wants to talk to him, but she’s not the best at talking to people online, so she just likes and comments on all his posts and hopes he gets the message “hi i think you’re cool”.

jason, louis and quincy are regulars at the coffee shop hao is also a regular at and józef works at. louis has attempted to talk to hao before, seeing him as a lonely old man, and was promptly told to fuck off. józef is the equivalent of a kind barista who always gives the regulars he knows extra stuff and talks to them a lot.

Idk but to me Ricky and nini always seemed a little forced. I really appreciate the subtlety of hsmtmts! Like Jets feelings for Kourtney are noticeable when you rewatch and same with Maddox and Ash. Hsmtmts has always thrives on a mix between subtlety and blatantly showing the audience, like the duet with Ej and Gina as Hans and Anna pretty blatantly showed they weren’t gonna work out. It made it hard to find nini and Ricky interesting when everything about them was always shoved in there somehow, like every confessional and every scene they would just describe how they were feeling and what was happening in this very unnatural way that people do not do.

But Ricky and Gina showed off Tims mix of subtlety and showing instead of telling the audience. We don’t hear about Ricky’s feelings THAT much but we can SEE his totally hopeless pining (side note Joshua basset put his whole SOUL into that unrequited longing) and not to be mean (even though it’s totally fair game at this point) it just makes the portwell and rini shippers look not very clever at this point. At the very least they should be able to admit that rina was gonna happen at some point but pretending to not see it AT ALL, makes them look either blind or just petty.

i agree they always seemed forced! i enjoy rina madlyn and jetney for the same reasons you listed. even with redlyn they showed why their relationship worked instead of JUST telling us. for portwell and rini the only time they showed us something about their relationship instead of telling us is showing they didn’t work.

i think a large part of the problem is all of their development was off screen and so was their first relationship besides the s1 flashback. there’s definitely a way to show exes to lover’s relationship and/or a relationship that has history pre show and make it interesting but for rini that just didn’t happen. they just simply tell us they had this loving relationship and that they know each other so well but they don’t show it all. if anything it seemed like they didn’t know each other well. and that’s funny considering they shoehorned in them being childhood best friends. which is still funny to me because they don’t feel like childhood best friends at all. it’s very similar to dawson and joey where they’re telling us they’re best friends and are each others person when the only evidence of them on screen (tho they attempted with dawson and joey but failed in my opinion) is the characters saying it. we don’t actually get to see their bond ☠️☠️. it’s one of my biggest problems with the best friends to lovers trope in general despite me loving it - the fact half the time the ships with it don’t actually feel like they’ve known each other for that long or have history.

with rini it’s funny to me because going with the idea they’re childhood friends to me they just feel like that relationship that only got together because everyone expected them to. like i don’t think we even actually know why ricky and nini liked each other besides ricky holding onto her for comfort 😭😭

i actually said before (here x) that i think one of the reasons some people don’t get rina is because it’s not being told to you it’s being SHOWN to you and they called rina forced in s3 bc their relationship became fully text in s3 instead of subtext (even though s1 and esp s2 was obvious enough but i digress). portwell and rini was in your face from the beginning they started to both of them ending but their stans missed the fact they would eventually break up bc the show was SHOWING you instead of telling you the reasons they would eventually not work out (besides in s2b for rini and s3 for portwell where the underlying reasons their relationships would fail started becoming obvious …. in which then their stans said it’s forced ….)

your second paragraph !!!! i said the same thing here. i just don’t understand how they can see them having no closure and the rina relationship just constantly being put on hold instead of being put to rest and think nothing was ever going to happen or get addressed. sure i started to think rina was never happening but not because it made sense that their story is over. i just thought the writers were bad at writing 😭😭 but like i said in the post they refused to see them as romantic in s1 and then said it was one sided in s2 and that the flashback was closure and ricky never liked her and then one sided on ricky’s end in s3 and now say s3 and their feelings don’t make sense …. they want to talk about bad writing so much but leaving rina open and never closing their book would have been the bad writing.

What 2020 brought me

Of course this has been a terrible year. A year which was filled with trauma, and anxiety for a lot of people. Lots of social upheaval, next to a global pandemic. It’s been tough and it has been hell. But today, on Yule, I also wanted to focus on the good things 2020 has brought me, no matter how small.

Title: Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation WC: 1000

“So what are you, Officer Babysitter?” — Joey “Monster” Malone, Under the Influence (5 x 11) 

He’s a little surprised at the way Esposito steps up when they’re about to lose Joey Malone to either foster care of juvenile hall. It’s not that Esposito is any less dedicated than the rest of them—he’s seen first hand the ends of the earth the man went to with Lockwood, and again the summer after Beckett’s shooting, and once more when Cole Maddox came calling. He’s seen first hand the compassion and empathy he can wield, and he feels rather bad for being surprised. 

It’s just that a kid—a teenager who is clearly chock full of issues—is quite the undertaking, even if it’s just for a night, and neither nurturing nor a knack for supervision tops the list of the fine Detective’s fine qualities. And yet, Esposito had apparently piped right up with the solution, and he’s kind of wondering about it. He would kind of like to ask her about it, but there’s a vibe coming off her that he hasn’t quite made sense of yet. 

So he takes the win instead. He embraces the fact that Esposito is on teen watch, and Ryan is following up on what meager leads they have. He does a little dance when he realizes that means she gets to knock off early, and he has the honor and privilege of trying to coax her into actually doing something relaxing instead of sticking around to do paperwork or going off to her place—sans him—to hone her superhero skills, or whatever else objectively boring thing she goes back to her place—sans him—to do. 

“Feet up at my place?” He uses helping her on with her coat as an excuse to speak low in her ear. “I could fix you a bowl of Lucky Charms—just marshmallows—for dinner and we could watch something mindless?” 

Her eyes light up briefly at the prospect of Lucky Charms, just the good parts. He wonders, not for the first time, how a woman who keeps herself in absolutely top-of-the-line shape has such terrible eating habits, but he’s not too proud to work that angle. There are few tactics he won’t deploy if they up his chances of an evening with her. He thinks that this tactic has given him a lock on the foreseeable future, but she reverses course. She looks at her shoes and shake her head. 

“That sounds tempting.” She smiles at him. “It is tempting, but . . .” 

“But you have something better to do than abuse your pancreas and yell at True Blood for how egregiously dumb it’s gotten?” He’s not hitting the right tone. He’s too jocular and simultaneously too blasé, as though he can take it or leave it if she decides to head to her place rather than his. He still hasn’t deciphered the vibe she’s been putting out ever since she emerged from the conference with Joey Malone’s case worker. 

“I just—“ He follows her eyeline through the blinds and into the conference room where Esposito is still engaged in signing his soul away in blood by the looks of it. She sighs and looks back at him, shaking her head apologetically. She searches the surface of her desk as though she’s looking for some busy work to latch on to. She starts to unbutton her coat. “I think I should stick around here a while longer . . .” 

She trails off, and he suddenly wonders if the reason he can’t translate her current vibe is because she can’t translate it. She’s standing in the no man’s land between desks, pivoting to spy on the conference room proceedings, then back to the board, then back to Esposito and his administrative saga. 

“You’re worried about him,” he says, surprising himself, as he’s just put the pieces together. “You’re worried that Esposito . . .” 

He stops. His brow furrows hard core as he tries to hang specifics on the worry she’s radiating. It’s no easy task, though. He is suddenly—and not entirely fairly—flooded with awareness of Esposito’s not-so-fine qualities. He is almost pathologically impatient and stubborn. To say he has a hair-trigger temper is an insult to hair triggers everywhere. He’s never met a problem that he did not firmly believe he could not chase down and pummel into submission. All of that could be a problem. It could very definitely be a problem. He turns to her, and he knows—he knows—that his face is blank with completely unhelpful horror. 

“There’s nothing to worry about,” she snaps as she spins out of his orbit. She wrestles her coat off one shoulder, but she’s missed a button and she’s kind of stuck. “I’m not worried.” 

“You are,” he says gently. He frees the button she’s missed and steps back to give her space. She’s not above a little chasing and pummeling herself, not that he objects. “You’re“—he hesitates a second, but it’s just too sweet a realization to let pass by—“You’re mom worried about him.” 

“Mom worried?” It comes out loud enough that  she startles herself. “Mom worried is not a thing,” she grumbles about a million decibels lower. She yanks her sleeve back on and  fiddles with the placket of her coat, then looks up at him uncertainly. “Mom worried is stupid.” 

It’s not quite a question. It’s a plea for reassurance, for an explanation that he doesn’t have about how these things work—who worries about whom. He doesn’t have an explanation, but he has quick fingers and there’s a bowl of Lucky Charms—just marshmallows—in her future. 

“Not stupid.” He discreetly places a hand at her lower back and ushers her toward the elevator. “Mom worry is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. That energy’ll get him through.” 

She sighs and steps to the back of the elevator car. She casts one more look in the direction of Esposito, of “Monster” and the unlikely duo the two of them make. “It better.” 

A//N: Long week to say the least. This is long, to say the most. Neither of these are things.
