Fox Sports Taps iRacing To Fill NASCAR Void; Real-World Drivers To Face Off in Virtual World
Fox Sports, NASCAR, and iRacing are giving NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. a chance to race once again on FS1 (as well as the Fox Sports app). Earnhardt and a number of other legends will jump into virtual cars to race on a virtual version of the Homestead-Miami Speedway. And the competition will help feed the real hunger of sports fans longing for live competition on TV in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
For iRacing President Steve Myers, a company that has been around for 16 years has an opportunity to deploy its PC racing-simulation software to make a difference, beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
“We’ve been working really hard to be in this position,” he says, “so that we can step in and provide not only NASCAR fans but also drivers a sense of normalcy.”
The deal came about after Fox Sports NASCAR analyst Jeff Gordon called Earnhardt, who has been a great friend to iRacing over the year, to try to connect Myers with Fox Sports CEO/Executive Producer Eric Shanks to discuss the possibility of getting iRacing onto big-time TV.
“We sketched out an idea, and they loved it right away,” says Myers. “Dale has been a big advocate, and I can go on and on about how he has helped us. And now the entire industry has bought into this: we actually had to change the format to have two heats because we had too many drivers and we wanted only 35 cars on the track.”
iRacing is well-versed in production of a broadcast-quality virtual show, having streamed Tuesday night racing for 11 years. In such competitions as the NASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series, 40 of the best simulation racers compete for $300,000 over 20 races, including $100,000 for the season points winner. The Tuesday-night race this year averaged 280,000 live views this week vs. 248,000 last year.
The iRacing headquarters facility in Chelmsford, MA, features a new $200,000 control room built in November and houses all the racing computers, a production switcher, and other gear.
“We hired people from the broadcast world like producers and have others [serve as] camera [operators] and spotters,” says Myers. “We can connect and do everything remotely, but we host all of the stuff ourselves, create the website and software, and have our own servers and database.”
On Sunday, all the drivers will compete from their homes, and all that is required is a typical videogame racing system that can be picked up at Best Buy (although some pros do have full racing cockpits with wraparound screens; others wear VR goggles). iRacing has laser-scanned all the racetracks to make sure all the bumps are accounted for (as well as light poles and other features).
The most unusual aspect of the race on Sunday is that it will feature real drivers competing in a simulation that can make use of some of their skills but not all of them.
“Some are going to be doing this for the first time this week,” Myers notes. “Those guys will be fun to watch as they will realize there is a reason guys in the esports series get $100,000: it’s a hard skill to master. And the first-timers will struggle at first because they have to get used to racing without all of their senses. But, if they treat it with the same patience they do racing in the real world, they will be fine.”
Fox NASCAR broadcasters Jeff Gordon, Mike Joy, and Larry McReynolds will call the action from the iRacing virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway. Clint Bowyer, who expanded his role with Fox Sports earlier this year, will serve as in-car analyst, competing in an iRacing simulator in the Fox NASCAR Charlotte, NC, studio.
“The race production is done at our headquarters,” Myers explains, “and then the signal is sent to Fox in the same way a signal leaves from a production truck at a regular event. Fox will add in the talent while we do all the cameras and graphics.”
The race is expected to last around 90 minutes, depending on things like crashes and wrecks. Race control will determine how wrecks that occur at the back of the pack affect race stoppages.
Myers says that, regardless of whether or not iRacing is on TV, he and the team will be offering NASCAR racing every Sunday until real-world racing returns.
Says Brad Zager, executive producer/EVP/head of production and operations, Fox Sports, “This is a unique opportunity to offer competitive and entertaining racing to our viewers as we all work through these challenging times together.”
Adds Myers, “We are establishing a trustworthy relationship with Fox Sports, and, if we do a good job, there are some opportunities down the road.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be a sports event this weekend without some extra precautions. It has taken the world about a week to understand the importance of following CDC guidelines.
Zager says the well-being of all involved is paramount: “We are following CDC guidelines to maintain a safe work environment, as the well-being of all those involved is paramount. We value our relationships across the NASCAR community and appreciate all of the effort that it took in bringing this project to life.”
Myers notes that the iRacing office is down to essential personnel only and that cleanliness guidelines are being followed. The only wrinkle in plans for the rest of the season would be if the government prevents essential personnel from getting to the office.
Besides Earnhardt and Bowyer, who is 2008 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, the competitors will include NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Labonte, two-time and defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski, 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano, three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, 2016 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year Chase Elliott, 2014 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year Kyle Larson, and 2017 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series champion Christopher Bell.

Coca-Cola Extends Partnerships with NASCAR and ISC
Extension Builds on over-50 year History between Coca-Cola and the Sport
The Coca-Cola Company, NASCAR and the International Speedway Corporation (ISC) announced plans to extend their longstanding partnership through 2023.
The extension will enable the beverage brand to build on its more than 50-year history with the sport by engaging racing fans across NASCAR’s three national series and 12 ISC-operated race tracks.
“We’re elated to announce an extension to this winning formula. The association with NASCAR, iconic tracks across the country, the Coca-Cola 600 and the Coca-Cola 400, and the Coca-Cola Racing Family drivers create an ideal relationship between the brands, the sport and fans. It allows for a fully integrated experience that connects our brand with NASCAR fans at every level – locally, nationally, at the track, in store, at home and elsewhere,” said Stuart Kronauge, SVP, Marketing & Business Unit President of USA Operations, Coca-Cola North America.
While the brand has been involved with stock car racing for 50 years, it became an Official Partner of NASCAR in 1998. The extended agreement furthers the brand’s position as the “Official Soft Drink of NASCAR.”
A signature connection point is the Coca-Cola Racing Family – a group of top drivers including Austin Dillon, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Daniel Suarez and Darrell Wallace Jr.
The Racing Family, which has been around for 20 years, makes appearances on behalf of the brand and is featured in advertising, promotions and packaging.
The extended relationship with ISC will continue the brand’s position as the leading soft drink pour across NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. Through partnerships with ISC and Speedway Motorsports, Inc., it will be refreshing fans at 21 race tracks in 2018.
“Our renewed relationship underscores how committed Coca-Cola is to enhance the race experience for our fans. The brand’s deep involvement in our sport, including track pouring rights, race entitlements and relationships with the drivers – all add up to a valued partnership. The company has been a long-time supporter of NASCAR, and we are thrilled to embark on this next expanded phase of our partnership,” said Daryl Wolfe, Chief Sales and Partnership Officer, NASCAR and ISC.
Coca-Cola won a global World Branding Award at the recent awards ceremony at Kensington Palace, London.

Joey Logano never dreamed of experiences that came with a NASCAR Championship
Joey Logano never dreamed of experiences that came with a NASCAR Championship
By Jerry Jordan, Editor
WASHINGTON D.C. – Since age seven, Joey Logano had always wanted to be a racecar driver and those dreams naturally led to his desire to become a NASCAR champion but nowhere in his consciousness did he realize that achieving that goal would put him at the side of one of the most powerful men in the world and behind-the-scenes at America’s most iconic residence.

Storylines so far and what to watch in the second half of the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season
nbc_sports
Whoa, we’re halfway there.
Living on a prayer? Maybe for some teams. With the dominance of Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. so far in 2018, only seven drivers have officially qualified for the 2018 playoffs. With just eight races to go until the playoffs begin we are guaranteed to have at least one driver make it to the playoffs on points.
Who’s in the playoffs right now?
Locked in via wins: Kyle Busch (5), Kevin Harvick (5), Martin Truex Jr. (3), Clint Bowyer (2), Austin Dillon, Erik Jones, Joey Logano
Tentatively in on points: Brad Keselowski (596 points), Kurt Busch (566), Kyle Larson (544), Denny Hamlin (538), Aric Almirola (503), Ryan Blaney (496), Jimmie Johnson (461), Chase Elliott (444), Alex Bowman (426)
The playoff bubble isn’t that big
Bowman’s in a precarious position as the final driver in the playoffs via points. If a new winner gets a victory anytime soon he’s on the outside of the playoffs. And that’s pretty likely to happen.
If for some crazy reason it doesn’t — 2018 is weird — he doesn’t have too many competitors for that final spot on points. Only two drivers are within easy striking distance.
On the bubble: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (407), Paul Menard (371)
These guys need a late surge. Or more likely a win.
Ryan Newman (94 points behind Bowman), Daniel Suarez, William Byron, Jamie McMurray and any other driver not listed in this article so far needs to get a win to qualify for the playoffs. Otherwise a playoff berth isn’t happening.
Who is going to be the next new winner?
Hamlin and Keselowski haven’t shown race-winning speed so far in 2018. Elliott and Johnson have been way off. Aric Almirola was really fast at Chicago but two loose wheel issues relegated him to a finish outside the top 20.
Larson seems to be the best bet, but then that leads us into the next question.
Is Chevy going to win a race?
Austin Dillon won the season-opening Daytona 500, the first race for Chevrolet’s Camaro in the Cup Series. A driver in a Camaro hasn’t won since.
This is an unprecedented drought in modern NASCAR and doesn’t show any non-Kyle Larson signs of disappearing anytime soon. If Larson isn’t the one that breaks Chevy’s 17-race winless streak it’s hard to figure who is going to do it.
Larson has led 365 laps so far in 2018; fifth-most in the Cup Series. Every other Chevrolet driver has combined to lead 263 laps. Yes, that’s a gap of 102 laps.
What speed secrets do Stewart-Haas and Joe Gibbs Racing still have?
We were going to go with Toyota and Ford on this but let’s be real. Toyota is for all intents and purposes Joe Gibbs Racing (and we’re lumping Furniture Row Racing in here via association on this) and Ford’s success in 2018 has been largely dependent on Stewart-Haas Racing even as the Penske cars have been consistent. So we’re going to focus on those two teams.
Toyota teams — led by Truex and Busch — won eight of the 10 playoff races in 2017. No manufacturer is likely to do that in 2018. But it’s certainly plausible that we’ll see a 5-5 or 6-4 Ford/Toyota split with Chevrolet left to fight for the scraps. And we’re not sure who we’d give the advantage to at the moment.
A bright spot for Chevy is that Toyota had a (relatively) slow start in 2017 with its new Camry before dominating the series in the second half. But Toyota’s slow start would have been considered an astronomical success by Chevy’s standards this season. All signs point to the title fight coming down to drivers from Ford and Toyota teams even if Larson wiggles his way into the periphery of the picture.
Will Johnson have a new sponsor soon?
One of the biggest off-track storylines surrounds the seven-time champion’s team. Lowe’s is leaving at the end of the season and Hendrick Motorsports has not announced a replacement for the home-improvement chain.
Lowe’s has been Johnson’s only Cup Series sponsor. Whoever the new company — or companies — is will have a tough task in rebranding one of the most iconic drivers in NASCAR.
Will NASCAR point to the future for another major change?
The 2018 season has been all about hurrying up and waiting for NASCAR. The Cup Series will have a new title sponsor system. But that starts in 2020. We have to wait until then for significant schedule changes as well. The 2019 season is the final year of a five-year sanctioning agreement NASCAR signed with its tracks and the schedule for next season was announced with very little fanfare.
The sanctioning body tried a new rules package during the All-Star Race and it produced entertaining, if inauthentic, racing. This being NASCAR, of course, the use of the rules again in 2018 were immediately teased by series executives.
But that’s not happening in the present either. NASCAR said earlier this summer that the All-Star rules wouldn’t be used until 2019 at the earliest and cited the competition of the 2018 season as a reason for holding off.
If 2018 was so competitive — based on the points gaps in the standings and the small number of winners it’s not an easy argument to make — NASCAR wouldn’t have found it necessary to try the All-Star Race rules in the first place. We’ll see what other future changes are in store as the second half of the season rolls on. Given that the only constant in NASCAR is change, it’s a safe bet there will be more future changes announced before the end of the season.

Austin Dillon wins Daytona 500 in race that saw several NASCAR stars crash
Austin Dillon won the 60th Daytona 500 in overtime on Sunday — and didn’t lead the race until the final lap.
The win for Dillon, 27, came as he raced in the iconic No. 3 car, which was made famous 17 years ago today after racing icon Dale Earnhardt was killed in his last lap at NASCAR’s famed International Speedway.
“It was so awesome to take the 3 car back to victory lane,” Dillon said. “This is for Dale Earnhardt Sr. and all those Senior fans.”
Dillon’s win in the No. 3 car also came two decades after Earnhardt’s victory in the Daytona 500. Dillon on Sunday even replicated the slide Earnhardt did in 1998 and did a burnout in the shape of a 3 in the infield grass.
Dillon wasn’t a factor in his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet until the final lap in overtime when he got a push from Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. that helped him get to leader Aric Almirola. Dillon spun Almirola then whizzed on by to give Childress, his grandfather, an iconic victory in that beloved No. 3.
The race marked the end of star Danica Patrick’s NASCAR career, which came to a close earlier than expected as she crashed in a multi-car accident. Patrick’s final race will be the Indianapolis 500 in May.
Darrell Wallace Jr. finished second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and Chris Buescher.
Danica Patrick greets fans as she is introduced before the NASCAR Daytona 500 Cup series auto race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018.

Chase Elliott and former Cup Series champions Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick also crashed, ending their Daytona 500 hopes early.
