What's your fav Joel Kinnaman character? Mine is probs holder tbh

(I'm trying to find more stuff with him to watch, I nearly almost might just watch holder scene packs on YouTube lol) I watched a little bit of that Netflix thing, I can't mind the name of the show, he was called kovacs in it and people kept changing bodies, but I didn't like it so I never finished it, I feel like there's not enough things with him in it

I always say there are the big three when it comes to Kinnaman characters: Rick Flag, Takeshi Kovacs, and Stephen Holder.

I tolerate Rick in 2016's Suicide Squad (and he does have moments I actually really love), but my obsession for Rick comes solely from 2021's The Suicide Squad. He was what sparked my Joel love and I love every moment with him in that film (yes, even that part because I am a gluten for pain).

I can see why Altered Carbon (the Netflix show with him as Takeshi Kovacs) isn't everyone's cup of tea but I LOVE IT!!! And his character is so layered and complex and hits all the character traits I love. Plus, he is GORGEOUS in it! And he can effortlessly switch between being an angry kickass asshole to a tender, heartbroken soul in seconds.

And as you said, Stephen Holder from The Killing is such a great and complex character! He's so pathetic and sad and I just constantly want to give him a hug! And it's insane looking at him and remembering he is the same Joel that plays Tak or Rick because Joel was SO skinny back then! But I love it so much!!!

A few honorable mentions you might want to try seeking out if you are looking for more Joel content:

Ed Baldwin in "For All Mankind" (a show on Apple+). Ed is a very close 4th place Joel character for me and each season his character gets a decade older so it is fun to watch him play all these different ages (including the current season when he is in his 70s)

Pete Koslow in "The Informer" (movie). The movie itself is very dark but good. However, Joel's performance is the highlight (and it is probably the thickest he's been)

Erik Heller in "Hanna" (a show on Amazon Prime). I'll be honest, I still haven't finished the first season but I've seen all the gifs and clips and he does a really good job here.

Brian Godlock in "Silent Night" (movie released in some parts of the world last week). This revenge action movie has absolutely no dialogue but Joel is AMAZING at conveying all the emotions needed for his role and he kind of gives me older Holder vibes throughout.

I absolutely don't watch a lot of films. That's a common misconception. However.

Violent Night is about exactly what I expect from Tommy Wirkola, which is to say, it's a funny high concept action horror hybrid that could have used a few more rounds of rewrites and a little trimming to live up to its full potential and to pack a stronger punch, but it's a good ride nonetheless. Wildly better use of your David Harbour than in a somewhat similarly-minded Hellboy reboot. Boy did that one suck.

I haven't seen Silent Night, but the reviews make it seem pretty much like what its trailer promises, a competent, but kinda basic and disposable action flick with a cute silent gimmick, also Joel Kinnaman can carry a movie even without dialogue and needs a better agent apparently. And this movie is somehow shorter than the killer Santa one, which is always welcome.

Haven't seen Strange Way of Life either except as gifs here on tumblr, haven't even kept up with critics, so no idea, but I usually like Almodovar, so.

Love The Nice Guys to bits, amazing, funny, impeccably constructed, perfectly cast, clever without being annoying about it, and it takes an especially steady hand to seamlessly blend a buddy movie, a murder mystery, 1970s porn industry, and Detroit automotive lobby facing the oil crisis and its own inevitable demise. Make it a double feature with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

“Letting down someone who trusts you is worse than letting down someone who loves you.” - Unknown 

Despite the gravity around Tak’s plus-one wedding invite, you only had a short time left to answer him. Yes or no. Yes or no. 

In an effort to stay professional, Tak made a point not to mention the wedding invite again until days later, seemingly whispering to you in some private code. Right now, both of you lugged through some collective board meeting, hiding. 

“Have you thought about it? To be honest, I don’t mind going by myself in the worst scenario.” Tak offers kindness and clears his throat while sitting beside you. Shareholders mingled amongst themselves as sunlight beamed through windows. 

No brainer. He deserves to be happy outside of work. You think to yourself, after days of tossing and turning the idea. 

In the time since beginning this job, you’ve learned that he’s rigid, but doesn’t even act like some kind of monster. He’s misunderstood and specific, not cold and unforgiving. 

You’ve seen him mull over reports in tank tops and sweatpants. You’ve memorized almost every tattoo that runs along toned skin. You know damn-well that in his office, around the corner away from his desk, there’s an ensuite shower stall. 

Rejecting Tak’s question would’ve almost crippled this ongoing partnership. This entire job revolves around trust and of course you know that Tak would’ve never asked anyone else. 

“Yes. I’ll do it. Don’t worry.” With a genuine smile, you mumble those affirming words, rise from one seat, and wink towards Kovacs, scurrying your heels out of the conference room.

That night, he surprised you with several outfits for this weekend. You don’t even have the chance to buy new luggage that’ll fit this designer wardrobe. After office hours, Kovacs is sitting on that carpet and packing your suitcase himself. 

“The tables have turned. You’re spoiling me.” You sit in his leather chair, swinging almost childishly while looking down at him between bites of one late takeout meal. 

“The flight’s booked for tomorrow, so we don’t have time to waste. I’d rather help than find out that you slept in and we miss something.” Tak goes on, barely focusing on the chance to eat anything from his own takeout box. 

“Is your family strict or something?” You ask just to be sure. 

“No, I just don’t like being late.” For once, he seems nervous again, dodging eye contact with you. 

“This isn’t about work. It’s your family, Tak.” You set down your takeout box and fold both arms, facing Tak without jokes this time. 

Silence. Kovacs answers with silence before zipping up your suitcase and standing up, rolling that luggage towards his desk for safekeeping until you go home.

As long as he can survive without facing too many personal questions, both of you agree not to falter this weekend. 

The flight is safe. In turn, that destination wedding runs beautifully. Tak’s aunt and future uncle beam with perfect smiles. Kovacs looks more dapper than usual, wearing a corsage near the lapel of his suit. Perch in the seat right alongside him, you wipe away genuine tears, quietly happy over this union. 

It isn’t until the reception that Tak speaks to you again, cornered at a table while everyone else joins that dance floor. 

“Thank you.” His gratitude is small enough to be whispered. You know that he isn’t lying, especially when he gently decides to hold your hand underneath the table. 

“You’re welcome.” You squeeze his palm right back, still understanding that no one else knew this side of him. 

What are you trying to tell me? Your own thoughts begin pondering more and more questions again.

When you both return to work that following week, he’s different. He’s smiling more often. Sometimes, he leaves the office earlier than usual. On and on. Wheels turn in your head with each moment and you suddenly wonder how things changed. 

Maybe that invite to the wedding eased his loneliness. Maybe having someone nearby quelled rumors that circulated around his family. It would never be your place to question motives, but that joy made it all worth it. You had helped him.  

“Hey, are you busy or?” After getting slammed with paperwork from new entities, Tak is standing in your office doorway, wearing another tank top and rubbing the back of his neck. 

“Unless you’ve got a way to punch the new client with telekinesis or something, please don’t distract me.” You hold both temples, frustratingly turning away from the computer screen and dodging him.  

“I’ll bitch at them in the morning.” Tak curses, walking around your desk and facing that damn computer screen himself. “Just say the word and I’ll switch our coding to another department.” 

“Tak, we can barely finish things without overloading people. If I didn't substitute Bancroft, even your tech staff would almost be non-existent.” By no means did you excel in STEM through college, but you learned enough about the basics here. 

“Alright. Excuse me. Here.” Tak clips through words again, Before you can debate anything else, he makes enough room to practically lean over the desk, saves your work, sends out an email, and shuts down that computer. 

Observing him through wide eyes minutes later, you’re only left with the dim brightness of your own desk lap. The window blinds cast shadows, looming Tak with borderline darkness that seems powerful to kill you. 

“Thank you.” You show him gratitude of your own. Even after you’ve dared to speak up, your voice trembles as he glances over one shoulder in that tank top. His blondish hair falls out of place, then almost veling those hazel eyes away from you.

“You’re welcome.” Though you’ll never admit it tonight, his two words almost make you feel dizzy, despite their repetition in the past few months. 

“What are you thinking? We’re just in the dark You say, trying to figure out his intention at this point. He’s no longer anxious, surely focused on something that goes deeper than you sitting here. 

“Dinner. You and me. Just like the first time. None of my family. None of our coworkers.” Tak turns around and reaches to hold your hand. You instinctively squeeze his palm back. 

“Should we sit on the floor again? I don’t think any beachfront places are open right now.” You chuckle, already taking out your phone.

You’ve shared another takeout night at the office with him. After eating, both of you are laying on your backs, watching shadows that loom across the ceiling like ghosts or phantoms. 

“What would you do without the business?” You ask Tak, turning to face him without closing too much personal space between each of you. 

“To be honest, I don’t know.” He’s rested on his hand on his clothed stomach, but doesn’t allow himself to look at you. At least not yet. 

“Did you have another dream?” You whisper back. 

“No one’s ever asked me that one before.” He’s nervous again, almost faltering his usual composure. “What about you?” 

“Maybe we can figure things out together.” You don’t know how to ask that question either, but smile anyway. 

“Deal.” Tak affirms, looking at you. His hazels nearly pierce into your soul and you almost can’t breathe, realizing how close he actually is. 

If one of you just scooted closer, your lips would indeed touch. It’s only a matter of time. 

Tak scoots first and reaches out, daring to run his fingers along your chin until you’re able to make full eye contact. 

“Go ahead.” You permit, nearly sounding inaudible. 

Just when you think of closing both eyes and allowing this man to kiss you in the shadows, his cell phone buzzes on your desk out of nowhere, soon jolting you both away from each other. 

“I’m sorry.” Tak is sweet enough to caress your face before standing up and taking this office pick-up call from Poe.

Even when the limousine pulls up, you can’t see yourself going separate ways tonight. Maybe your conscience still thinks of that almost-kiss. Maybe you just don’t want Tak to deal with his thoughts alone. 

Whatever your own reason is, you hold his hand during this expected ride that will take you both all the way back home. 

Yet, when the driver pulls up to your apartment, Tak still hasn’t let go of your hand. Not that your boss aims to be possessive or dangerous, but it’s almost as if releasing this hold would’ve broken his own heart. 

“Can I…” Despite lowering his voice, Tak struggles as if he’s never asked you questions before. It’s like you’ve never helped this man with anything before. 

“What? I don’t understand what you mean.” You encourage Tak gently, hoping not to scare him away from this vulnerable moment. 

Before his nerves can get the best of him, Takeshi leans in and finally kisses you, allowing his palm to caress your face.

Background:

Largely up to player in terms of family, how they came to Hollow Grove and anything outside of the job. For a short career rundown, Colton is the Sheriff/Chief of the Hollow Grove Police Department and has been since 2011. He first joined HGPD in 1998. Your character would’ve joined around the same time and the two would’ve gone through the ranks together, eventually becoming partners as detectives. When the last sheriff was killed in 2011 Colton became the next sheriff. Your character would’ve been promoted by Colton to be the chief deputy in 2011 as well. The two are friends, they aren’t just coworkers that never talk outside of the job. Your character is the person that Colton goes to the most in HGPD. If your character is a werewolf they can both be members of the Greyson pack together too!

Since May 2016, after a murder of a vampire at the Town’s Masquerade Ball, HGPD has been on high alert. Everything that’s happened since can be found on the town’s timeline page that I’ve linked here, so I’d give that a look to be up-to-date on all the trouble that’s occurred. The person behind the murders, a witch named Cecile, was caught but since then the re-exposure of supernatural’s to humans and resurfacing of the Clave has caused continued tensions. Colton always makes sure there’s plenty of security at each event and your character would be part of planning that. I’d love to brainstorm and plot out any more specifics to give you room to build the character the way you’d like!cently.

Preferred personality:

Completely up to player! Colton tends to bury himself in work, lets stress build up when there’s a serious threat the Hollow Grove is facing and tries to carry all the weight on his shoulders so he doesn’t burden others. So any sort of personality that would play against that well. I’m down to plot out ideas!
