"Dead Mail"
Those with a penchant for films that defy conventional genre boundaries will find this uneven retro thriller especially rewarding.
“Dead Mail” is an intriguingly offbeat thriller that feels like it was unearthed from the depths of the 1980s, complete with a synthesizer-heavy score and a distinctly retro aesthetic. Directed by Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy, the film is an original and compelling blend of obsession, loneliness, and nostalgia, and your stamina will be rewarded if you can get through its more tedious…

Dead Mail trailer released
Co-Directed and Co-Written By Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy, Dead Mail stars Sterling Macer, Jr., John Fleck, Susan Priver, Micki Jackson, Tomas Boykin, and Nick Heyman. On a desolate, Midwestern county road, a bound man crawls towards a remote postal box, managing to slide a blood-stained plea-for-help message into the slot before a panicking figure closes in behind him. The note makes its way…

"Well, the first thing that comes to mind is Joe Pavelski. My captain in San Jose, always had great respect for him as a player. When I talked to him about about the situation, he really felt the group can win. He talked really highly about the organization, ownership and he talked really highly about Jim Nill and what a great man and a great person to work for and the organization that he built there. I trust Joe with my life. It was really one conversation with him. The obvious things, I've been in the league for 15 years. You go into Dallas, it's a great city, great fanbase, great environment in the rink. All of those things. Lifestyle, weather. All of those things are important but for me, it was my conversation with Joe Pavelski. I think I'd follow that guy anywhere."

dutchy talking about wanting to win for his teammates
(captions under cut)
"there's a lot of people that, you know. do i wanna win a cup for myself? absolutely, but i think i wanna win it more for other guys in that room. i mean, guys like jamie benn, and joe pavelski, and ryan suter, and pete [deboer], and just so many guys that deserve to win 'cause they're such great people. and you know, that's a responsibilty that has probably been heavy on me at times, but it means a lot to me, and- and it doesn't matter whether the pucks going in or it's not, i think, you know. you block shots, you hit, you just try and do the right things to help the team win no matter what's going on. 'cause we owe it to those guys, so. it'd be really great to do it for those guys."

Quote
Here’s the reality, for women and everyone else: you can’t actually determine someone’s character from their costuming. None of us can see past every mask, every time. If guys who yammer on about how white men need to just shut and listen for awhile were reliably good people, if they never DM’d teenagers or put their hand on a woman’s ass on the subway, the world would be an easier place. But I’m afraid that sometimes Try Guys cheat on their wives with subordinates, and sometimes nice guys are only nice until they can get women into a vulnerable position. Sometimes lunkheaded Joe Rogan-worshipping video-gaming men who complain about woke Star Wars and belong to Barstool’s shirt of the month club are fundamentally moral beings who don’t want to hurt anyone, even if they have stupid politics. And sometimes vice versa to all of that. The point is that you don’t know someone’s character until that character is revealed to you in a way that’s entirely separate from the performed, self-conscious aspects of a person. This, again, is another aspect of human social life that’s made harder in the internet era, given that there is no such thing as an affect-free presentation of the self online. Decency and integrity can only be discovered through the process of actually getting to know someone; they are not superficial virtues but instead deep, in-the-bone qualities that reveal themselves only slowly and with effort. Rebecca Traister doesn’t know Tim Walz’s character, and while sometimes a Try Guy is just a scared man trying to navigate an evolving social world as best he can, sometimes a Try Guy is a predator. You don’t know until you know.

Robertson Talks All-Star Game (01.06.23)
DeBoer: What a great accomplishment. I've got a tremendous amount of respect for his road to the league, and then to become one of the best players in the world... you know, it's a great example. We've got a couple of 'em on our team: Jamie Benn, Joe Pavelski, Mason Marchment—Marchment never drafted, Joe Pavelski and Jamie Benn late, Robo wasn't a first-round pick. I've got a lot of time and respect for the guys who take the long path to get to the league and then excel. I think it's just about hard work, and it's a great message for all players out there.

I ALSO dont rlly like sss but u asking ppl not to play it is so funny T.T just bc its rlly not that fun? like i wouldnt exactly recommend it, but ur point of the devs not having much time to finish things is pure speculation. they have to develop things weeks/months in advance. theyre just shitty devs.
It's not just speculation. I have not personally worked for Gamefam, but me saying that the devs are getting crunched was based largely on the fact that Sonic Speed Simulator makes a point of advertising their weekly updates
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously, they don't make an entire update worth of content in a single week, but they still have to move things along pretty quickly in order to have something ready to release every week.
Also important to note is that ex-Gamefam employees have made many allegations against the company, stating that there was a terrible crunch to push out content, that they were underpaid, that Gamefam threatened to take action against employees who discussed their wages — which is illegal by the way —and that they were terminated with little to no warning, including many who were allegedly laid off before the holidays. Details are below the cut.
An article from The Gamer included statements made by former employees. One employee claimed to have received an email informing them they had been fired three days after the date the email said they were fired on
"According to a screenshot of the apparent termination email, they were told on October 31 that they were fired on October 28"
Another specifically mentioned the crunch
"'While I was employed under Gamefam it was a constant struggle due to heavy crunching in the development team,' they continue. 'We were mandated to update Sonic Speed Simulator every week. this was a heavy toll on my mental and physical self [sic].'"
Additionally
"Multiplesources [sic] put the lowest average Roblox salaries between $32,000 and $35,000"
Gamefam denied the allegations, which then led to more former employees speaking out about the poor work environment.
One employee, Joshua DeBoer, reported facing trouble after discussing wages with other employees. From a Games Industry article
"DeBoer claims that as he presented the salary concerns to CEO Joe Ferencz, the executive said, 'Do you think it's good to go among your colleagues and spread dissatisfaction? You need to be seen as a leader if you want to stay here long.'"
Bloxy News further elaborated
"DeBoer was then suspended for a week [...] According to a Tweet put out by DeBoer, Gamefam forced him to reveal by name who he was discussing wages with, and also threatened to fire him if he continued to do so. Gamefam also failed to pay DeBoer’s final paycheck with the company on time, and refused to let him exercise stock options after repeated attempts."
DeBoer took this to the National Labor Relations Board, resulting in Gamefam settling by giving him a $5,000 bonus, and sending a notice to all employees, shared by Polygon
“WE WILL NOT tell you that it is toxic or poisonous to the company if you talk to coworkers about pay,”
Maybe it's just me, but that feels like a very passive aggressive way to phrase that.
It's possible that the devs aren't very good, but even if that's the case, there's a lot indicating a toxic work environment built around crunch culture. It's true that my previous post about SSS included some of my speculations about why exactly the game has the issues it has, such as positing that many elements of the game are poorly set up in order to encourage microtransactions, but the idea of the devs being rushed is not purely based on my own assumptions.
I will admit to being a biased party, due to disliking the game but playing multiple hours a week to get reference pictures of the week's content before it's gone, but I have tried to keep this post mostly limited to known facts, or statements by people who have actually worked on Speed Sim.
People are welcome to play the game if they so desire. The main reason I add disclaimers is because, while it's ultimately their decision what games they play, I don't want to be the one encouraging people to play it.
Hopefully this helped clear things up. You can look at any of the linked articles for more information. You can also direct more questions to me, but as far as the allegations go, my knowledge is limited to what I found reading through those articles. This is definitely a longer response than you were looking for, but I wanted to give a proper explanation

Sonic Speed Simulator developer settles labour complaint amid concerns of discriminatory workplace practices
Tumblr media
Major concerns continue to cloud Gamefam Studios, the developer of Sonic Speed Simulator, after it was uncovered that the company reached a settlement in a legal complaint that claimed abusive labour practices.
The legal complaint
Gamefam retaliated against employees who discussed about their conditions of employment, like wages and working hours, alleged former Ultimate Driving programmer Joshua DeBoer in a legal complaint to the United States Board of Labor Relations in January 2023. It claimed that the studio breached section 8 of the nick-named "Wagner Act", a law meant to protect employees from unfair labour practices.
"I took no pleasure in doing this, and I did it because I want what's best for my coworkers - which is a fair rate of compensation for their work, and proper working conditions."
In a thread on Twitter, DeBoer claimed he was met with "immediate hostility when trying to address working conditions", after a discussion about his rank with the company's CEO, Joe Ferencz. As a result, the programmer was suspended with pay for a week, revoked work communications, and barred to exercise stock options.
Tumblr media
Tails' Channel understands that the case reached a settlement in late March 2023, in that Gamefam agreed to reimburse DeBoer $5,000 USD in unpaid quarterly bonuses, and to publish an internal notice about the protected rights under the National Labor Relations Act.
"We will not in any like or related manner restrain, interfere with, or coerce you in the exercise of your above-stated rights guaranteed under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act," read the notice.
The community reaction
After revoking a temporary ban to all Sonic Speed Simulator discussion, the unofficial Sonic the Hedgehog subreddit community again issued a new ban, permanent this time, until "SEGA decides to partner with a different developer."
"Punishing employees for discussing wages is both illegal and unacceptable," the subreddit's head moderator announced late Tuesday.
Speed Sim staff "caught in the crossfire"
When asked about the Sonic the Hedgehog community's reaction to the settlement, DeBoer told Tails' Channel that he "felt really bad" for the present and past staff members of Speed Simulator.
"They put their hard and soul into the Sonic project to make a great first splash into Roblox with Sonic and SEGA - and it showed," said DeBoer. "And now they're getting caught in the crossfire because of the generalized disdain towards Gamefam as a whole."
No response from the studio
The news followed last year's fallout of widespread allegations of discriminatory labour practices at Gamefam Studios. Sonic Prime voice actor Deven Mack were among those who voiced concerns amid the "#SonicSweatshopSimulator" trend on Twitter.
Gamefam initially denied wrongdoing, and claimed that they loved their teammates and community. The studio has yet to respond to Tails' Channel's attempts for comment.
---
Update: Portions of the story were tipped by a current Tails' Channel team member. We understand that the member was employed by Gamefam Studios as a community moderator for Sonic Speed Simulator. The contents enclosed were solely those of the individual and no other third party. In all cases, the contents did not influence the writer's editorial decision-making. Steps have been taken to separate the individual from participating in editorial decisions related to Tails' Channel News coverage of Speed Simulator.
