Amateur Draft analysis - 1st Round Picks - College players

1) Buzz Cortes Our rank - 10 - Buzz is a left handed starting pitcher with great base stats that should dominate against lefties. Against righties he may have difficulty, hence why we had him 10th 2) Randy Hammonds Our rank - 2 The wildcard of the draft. Randy told everyone he wouldn't sign unless he could slot right into ML ball. Our scouts showed he has potential to play in the bigs right now with a good bat and stellar defence. He still has yet to sign. Was this all a ploy so he could play Indie ball and be a free agent next year? Breaking news: Hammonds has signed and looks like he could already be a force in the big leagues. This was a gamble that looks to have paid off bigtime for Huntington. 5) Del Hague Our rank - 5 Not much speed and a slightly below average defensive player. Del Hague will make up for that with a stellar bat. He may have trouble making contact with the ball, but when he does he is going to hit it a mile. Del has also yet to sign so we don't know how he currently looks. 9) Joe Merloni Our pick - 9 A very good, right handed pitcher with solid pitches, good control and is effective against both left and right handed batters. Merloni was ranked lower on our board because he lacks the ability to go deep into games. With a stamina of 52 and a durability of 27 he fits somewhere between a starter and the bullpen. It will be interesting to see how Montreal use him. 10) Clayton Jennings Our rank - 6 An all around second baseman who does a little bit of everything. A good bat, defence and speed. This is the type of player you want on your team because he can get on base and plug up the middle infield. Jennings questionable ability to stay healthy is probably what caused him to drop in the draft. If Colorado can maintain a good training and medical department, they have a real gem in the 10th pick. 12) Jeurys Guerrero Our rank - 2 An all around hitting back catcher. At 19 Guerrero already has the hitting ability to play in the majors. His ability to see balls and lay off bad pitches was unmatched in this draft class. Still has a ways to go to be an effective back catcher but could easily be a major league pinch hitter right out of college. 13) Evan Pomeranz Our pick - 14 A decent enough bat. Pomeranz greatest strength will be his legs. Pomeranz looks to be a defensive short stop that will be able to steal bases when he reaches the big leagues. Los Angeles field instructor will play a vital role determining just how good Pomeranz can be. 15) Stan Conforto Our pick - NA A great pick at the 15th spot. Conforto already has great fundamentals, control and decent pitches at the young age of 19. His slider and circle change will need some work to truly be dominant but we will see this young stud in the majors in a few seasons. 16) Jumbo Jamie Our rank - 29 Jumbo Jamie has probably the best name in the draft that we found. A good quality relief pitcher that may have gone a little high in the draft. Jamie has the skills to become a big leaguer but with a poor stamina/durability combination it will be interesting to see how many innings he can pitch a year. 17) Karl Howell Our rank 22 At 20 years old Howell is already strong as a bear. When this kid gets a hold of the ball, it's going to travel. Howell also exhibits strong defensive possibility and should be an excellent shortstop with proper coaching. Colorado hitting coaches will have to work on Howell making good contact with the ball and laying off bad pitches. If Howell can be consistent with putting the bat on the ball, he could be a big asset for Colorado going forward. 19) Bruce Swift Our rank - 40 A young leftie with good control and a dangerous 4 seam fastball. Swift has the potential to eat a lot of innings for the Black Sox in an end of the rotation role or as long relief. He has yet to sign despite asking for slot money. Swift may be back in the pool next year. 20) Jario Volquez Our rank - NA Volquez has great fundamentals for a 21 year old pitcher. He already has great splits against both lefties and righties and a great fastball/slider combination. Going forward Volquez' control and health may hinder his success as a starting pitcher but he should still play a valuable role when he reaches the major leagues. 21) Ji-Man Joon Our rank - 81 An interesting pick at 21. Joon is a right handed pitcher who projects to throw a lot of ground ball pitches and has the ability to strike a lot of guys out. Joon projects to have good control of his pitches and possesses a great fastball but other then that he may have trouble being able to get major league hitters out. Joon has yet to sign with Salem and may have better base numbers then are currently projected. 22) Marty Crosby Our rank - 3 At 19 Crosby already has the ability to hit the ball a ton and has a good grasp of how to tell balls from strikes. Before he reaches the majors he will have to work on his contact and his defensive responsibilities as a back catcher. His durability may come into question if he is unable to improve it over the coming season. 25) Toru Donald Our rank - 16 Entered the draft as a shortstop but may not have the defensive ability to make it in that position in the big leagues. Donald should still be a very effective third baseman for Kansas City. Donald already has good base ratings across the board. With good development, he should become a talented day to day player, or at least a very versatile bench player. 31) Mac Aubrey Our rank - NA At 19, Aubrey already has a dominant 4 seam fastball and a very effective slider. He is able to control his pitches well and has a very high durability, allowing him to recover after starts very quickly. His ability to keep the ball down may be a concern going forward, but if he can improve his splits and improve one of his other pitches, Aubrey should settle nicely into Baltimores rotation. 33) Carlos Graces Our rank - 4 Graces is a bit of an oddity. At 19 he has amazing base stats across the board including a great fastball and curveball. His splits, control and stamina are all very good for his age. Many other owners probably avoided Graces due to his durability. With an abysmal durability rating of 11 with scouts saying it will never improve, this pitcher may struggle to reach 90 innings a year. It will be interesting to see what role St. Louis slots him into when he reaches the majors.
