Title: Sleep Without You
Song Inspiration: Sleep Without You by Brett Young
Characters: Reader, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Eileen, Mary, Jody, Donna, Charlie
Word Count: 2,082
Warnings: Reader gets drunk, fluff
Author’s Note: This story is not canon compliant because I prefer my characters alive and happy.

“Do not make us come in there and take her, Dean,” Jody says through your bedroom door. You throw your head back and laugh from where you’re standing over the bathroom sink. Dean rolls his eyes from where he’d been watching you get ready. He walks over to the door and pulls it open with a dramatic huff.
“I’m not holding her hostage,” he tells the small group of women he finds waiting. Jody looks past him and you stick your head out of the bathroom.
“I’m almost ready. Sorry,” you apologize. Donna looks between the two of you suspiciously.
“There was definitely some hanky-panky going on here,” she says. Dean rolls his eyes again and walks back over to the bed, taking a seat on the edge. You laugh but blush despite yourself. She wasn’t wrong. The second Dean had seen you in the little red dress, he couldn’t keep his hands to himself.
“Honestly, I’ll meet you at the car in five minutes,” you tell them. Eileen laughs and nudges the two other women down the hall, sending a wink back at you before she disappears herself. You quickly slip into a strappy pair of matching red heels and can feel Dean’s eyes still on you. “Stop.”
“I’m not doing anything!!” He says, defensively.
“No, but you’re thinking about it,” you laugh. Standing to your full height, you hold your arms out and turn in a slow circle. “Alright. How do I look?”
“Too damn good,” he compliments. You smile as you step over to him, his hands coming to rest on your hips. “Don’t get to see you all dolled up like this too often. Without it being for a case at least.”
“I know. This is actually so…normal,” you say, shaking your head slightly. “A bachelorette party.”
“Can’t believe they’re actually getting married,” Dean muses.
“Little Sammy’s all grown up,” you tease, giving his shoulders a squeeze.
“Mmmm,” he hums. “Least this time he got my blessing.” You laugh and shake your head. “You should go before the search party comes back.” Leaning down, you give him a quick kiss.
“Don’t wait up,” you tell him. He laughs lightly and gives your hips a gentle squeeze.
“Don’t party too hard,” he says. You can’t help but laugh again.
“The party consists of the bride-to-be, myself, your mother, two officers of the law who might as well be your mother and your aunt, and a lesbian. I make no promises,” you say as you run a hand through his hair. He gives you a smile and shakes his head.
“Sammy and I will work on the bail money,” he jokes.
“Much appreciated,” you laugh and take a step back for him to stand. He takes your face in his hands and kisses you tenderly. The two of you stand there for a moment, enjoying each other’s presence.
“Y/N!” Mary calls your name as she comes down the hallway.
“Whoops! They sent the big guns this time,” you say, stepping away from Dean. He laughs as he follows you to the door and leans against the frame, crossing his arms.
“Be careful. Have fun,” he says as Mary takes you by the elbow. You wink back at Dean and give him a wave as you stumble along behind his mother.
***
“Don’t wait up.”
Those had been your instructions to Dean. He had tried to follow them. He knew you all would be out late so he made a valiant effort to turn in for the night around 12:30. The scent of your shampoo on the pillow next to him was too much to bear.
At 12:35, he made his way back to the library and poured himself a glass of whiskey. Sitting back in one of the chairs, he pulls his phone out and smiles at the picture of you grinning back at him.
At 12:40, Sam wanders back into the library. He pauses when he sees his older brother. Dean looks up at him and chuckles.
“Couldn’t sleep either?” He asks. Sam shakes his head as he walks over and sits across from Dean who pours a second glass. “What was it for you?” Sam swirls the glass slowly and cuts his eyes up at his brother.
“She usually plays with my hair while I go to sleep,” he admits, a bit embarrassed. Dean smiles and shakes his head, taking a drink. “You?”
“Pillow smelled too damn much like her,” he says, as though it were completely obvious. Now it’s Sam’s turn to shake his head.
“What happened to us?” He laughs. Dean shrugs, glancing back at his phone screen. “I mean…I’m getting married in a couple weeks. What?”
“Nah. I always saw that for you,” Dean says, looking at his younger brother. Sam gives him a skeptical look. Dean shrugs in response. “Hoped for it at least. You deserve it.”
“Just not with Becky?” Sam asks, trying not to smile.
“Eileen is a much better choice. Hands down,” Dean laughs. Sam laughs as well.
The two brothers sit in silence for a little while, each taking sips from their respective glasses. Sam watches his brother pour himself another glass before finally speaking again.
“You deserve it too, ya know,” Sam says simply. Dean looks at him curiously. “Your relationship with Y/N. Being happy and…and loved.”
“I haven’t done a thing to deserve Y/N loving me the way she does,” he says. Sam frowns but Dean gives him a smile. “And yet she keeps on doing it anyways.”
“I understand that,” Sam agrees, raising his glass slightly. Another silent moment passes as Sam gathers the courage to ask his next question. “Have you thought about it?”
“Thought about what?” Dean asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Marriage,” Sam says, making some elaborate, grand gesture with his hands. Dean laughs at Sam’s awkwardness and looks into his glass again.
“I was about ready to ask Mom for her ring but, ugh…someone beat me to it,” he says, smiling at Sam now. Sam’s eyes widen quickly.
“Oh!! Dean, I’m sorry,” he rattles off quickly. Dean laughs and holds a hand up.
“It’s fine. You got to it first, fair and square,” he says, standing and walking across the library. He stops at a lockbox sitting on one of the shelves and quickly puts in a combination. Sam watches his brother, curiously, as Dean removes something from the box. “Had to hustle a hell of a lot of pool but…” He walks back to his seat and holds up a simple but beautiful diamond ring. Sam stares it for a moment before looking at his brother, wide eyed.
“How long have you had that?” He asks. Dean shrugs, examining the ring between his fingers.
“Bought it about two weeks after you asked Eileen,” Dean recounts. “I’d been thinking about it for a while. Almost asked Mom, like I said. I just wasn’t sure if Y/N would go for it. What we have now is one thing. Marriage is whole other one. Then when you asked Eileen…I could see it in her eyes.”
“That was months ago. Why haven’t you asked her yet?” Sam questions.
“Didn’t wanna feel like I was just copying you or trying to steal anyone’s thunder,” Dean explains, going back to the box. “I’ll give it a little time. Let you and Eileen have your moment. Then I’ll ask.”
“Neither of us would care. We’d be thrilled for you both,” Sam tells him. Dean smiles and shrugs, putting the ring away again. He closes the box and relocks it.
“I’ve waited this long. A few more weeks won’t hurt,” Dean says. Sam smiles a little and nods as Dean comes back to his seat. Dean stretches and looks at his phone again. “Now, the real question…is when are you two gonna make me an uncle?” Sam sputters on his drink, quickly setting the glass down. Dean roars with laughter as the door to the war room opens up.
“Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play…and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate…but I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake…shake it off, shake it off…” You, Eileen, and Charlie all come in singing together, arms around each other. You all three stumble through a few very uncoordinated hip shimmies.
“Dear God. They are wasted,” Dean laughs. Mary runs around in front of your small choir and heads you off at the stairs.
“A little help?” She calls down to her sons. The two brothers get up quickly and make their way up the stairs. Sam wraps an arm around Eileen’s waist and starts to help her down the stairs as she giggles. Mary assists Charlie who grips the handrail as the room starts to spin on her. You cross your arms as Dean comes over to you.
“I told you not to wait up,” you scold him. He laughs and shakes his head, hands coming to rest on your hips.
“I tried, promise. Turns out I just can’t sleep without my girl,” he says, pulling you closer quickly. You let out a squeal as you stumble and fall into him. Before you have a second to process what’s happening, Dean scoops you up into his arms and starts to carry you down the stairs.
“I could have walked,” you mumble, wrapping your arms around his neck. He rolls his eyes at your protest.
“You wouldn’t have made it two steps,” he teases. “I’ll put you down if you want.”
“No!!” You exclaim, tightening your arms slightly. He laughs and nods.
“That’s what I thought.”
“These three,” Mary says, pointing between all three of you. “Are not allowed to go out drinking again.”
“Herding cats?” Sam asks. Mary scoffs a laugh.
“Cats would have been easier,” she says. Dean looks down at you and smirks.
“Did you not behave for Mom?” He asks. Your shoulders bob up and down as you smile at him coyly.
“Why? You gonna punish me?” You ask with a wink.
“Oh my God,” Mary mutters, quickly leading a still dizzy Charlie towards the hall. Dean laughs wildly as he goes to follow.
“You’re gonna be so hungover tomorrow,” he says. He glances back at Sam and finds Eileen gently running her fingers through his hair. “Sleep tight, little brother.” Sam looks up at him and smiles.
“You too.”
Dean carries you down to your bedroom and tosses you on to the bed, eliciting another squeal from you. You kick off your heels as he goes through the dresser, finding one of his old t-shirts you’d claimed ages ago. He helps you change out of your dress and into the shirt with ease. You fall back onto the bed with a huff and close your eyes.
“Hold on,” Dean says, going into the bathroom. He comes back out a second later with a makeup wipe and sits next to you on the bed. You giggle as he gently and carefully wipes your makeup away. “What’s so funny?”
“Big, bad, monster-killing, Dean Winchester is taking my makeup off for me,” you tease. He rolls his eyes.
“You’d be pissed in the morning if you woke up with all this still on,” he says. He takes extra care around your eyes before finally finishing. “There.” He tosses the wipe into a nearby trash can.
Dean lays down on the bed next to you and you immediately roll over to face him, moving into his side. He lays an arm across your waist, pulling you even closer. Kissing your hair, he breathes in your scent and sighs. You giggle again.
“What now?” He asks.
“You love me,” you say. Dean laughs softly and nods, pushing your hair from your face.
“Yea, I do,” he agrees. You break into a wide grin as you close your eyes. “In fact, I’m gonna marry you, Y/N.” You giggle again and nod.
“I get to be the bachelorette next time,” you say. He laughs again and kisses your forehead.
“Mom’s gonna be thrilled.”
The next morning, Dean has aspirin and water ready by the bed for you when you wake up. You remember nothing from the majority of the night before, especially anything from when you all returned to the bunker. But when you catch the bouquet at Sam and Eileen’s wedding and see the look on Dean’s face, a fragment of a conversation comes back to you.
I’m gonna marry you, Y/N.

High Expectations
Characters: Reader, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Jody Mills
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Reader
Summary: Their meeting was just a lucky coincidence. Everything that happened after that was just their doing.
Warnings: fluff, insecurities, lies
Word count: 1252
A/N: Hello! How are you doing? I hope you had a lovely Christmas day. As promised, I'm here with a new fic. Some of you voted to read this one, so here's your chance. This story happened out of nowhere and it wasn't supposed to go this way, but I had fun while writing it and I'm so happy with what I came up with. I hope you'll like it as much. Enjoy! ❤ All errors are mine.
Tumblr media
It started unconventionally.
It was during one of Jody’s dinners. Y/N was new in town so, of course, Jody had invited her in. The boys were just passing through after one of their hunts.
It was just a coincidence.
Y/N didn’t know anything about the supernatural, and Dean was covered in cuts and bruises.
She was beautiful; he noticed it the moment he saw her, feeling self-conscious for once because his face, well, it looked like a battled filed. That feeling went away pretty quickly the moment Y/N and Sam discovered to be two nerds. Dean definitely couldn’t compete with that, bloody face or not.
They had a lovely dinner, though. A normal one, that was for sure and Dean didn’t mind that one bit, even if that meant watching his little brother flirt with her.
Tumblr media
Y/N was glad she had accepted Jody’s invitation. All the worries of being alone in a new town were forgotten for a moment. It was a nice evening, even though she had to do her best to not glance at Sam’s brother.
What was his name? Oh, right – Dean.
He was beautiful; she noticed it the moment she saw him, bloody face and all. Y/N had felt self-conscious when his eyes had landed on her because she was wearing that damn old shirt her mom had told her to toss away ages ago and, on top of that, she was wearing zero to nothing makeup. She couldn’t look that good that way.
She didn’t let it sting too much when he hadn’t paid too much attention to her through dinner, she was used to it anyway.
So, Y/N ended up talking to Sam, mostly about their shared passion for books. Until it was time for dessert, and Jody went to retrieve coffee and pie. Of course, Y/N went after her, trying to be useful.
“Can I help you with something?” She asked with a smile, with Sam right behind her taking the mugs from Jody.
“Oh, don’t worry about it. You can go call Dean, though. He’s outside on the back porch. He’ll kill us if we start the pie without him.” Jody smiled at her, grabbing the plates and disappearing into the next room.
Y/N glanced at the door that led to the porch, unsure. Taking care of the coffee would have been easier, she thought while walking towards the door. She opened it slowly, sliding through it. Dean was leaning against the railing, scrolling through his phone. He looked up as soon as he heard her footsteps, surprised to see her there. Y/N smiled, waving his hand mid-air, suddenly not sure how to act around him.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” Dean put away his phone, watching her fidgeting with her hands.
“Uh – Jody asked me to tell you there’s pie inside. She made it sound like something really important, so – ” she trailed off, feeling awkward but hoping that he wouldn’t catch on that. Dean smiled, nodding his head.
“Yeah – uh – I’m kinda a pie guy.” He said without even thinking. Y/N smiled at that and Dean could feel his ears getting warmer. Why in heart had he said that? A pie guy – what an idiot, he thought.
“Can’t blame you. It smelt good in there.” She pointed at the kitchen with her head.
“Oh, yeah?” He asked, putting his hands in his pockets, feeling more at ease.
“Yeah. I might have peeked at the filling if you’re interested.” She said, getting a bit closer while her lips curved upwards in a half smile. Dean grinned, making more room for her. They got closer, their bodies leaning toward each other.
“I think I might.”
Y/N pretended to ponder for a bit, before lowering her voice. “Jody wouldn't mind, right?”
“I won't tell if you don’t.” He whispered in a conspirator tone.
“Yeah, alright.” She was easy to convince. So, she got closer then, whispering in his ear their little secret. Dean hummed, her breath making his skin tingle.
“My favorite.” He answered, glancing at her and catching her already looking at him with a smile. They stared at each other for a few minutes, until Dean cleared his throat, forcing himself to look elsewhere. Y/N did the same, feeling her cheeks getting warmer.
“So, what happened to…?” She asked, pointing to his cuts on his face.
Right – Dean thought. He had forgotten about that for a minute, and the reality crushed back on him.
“Bad call on work,” which wasn’t a lie.
“Are you a police offer, too?”
“Firefighter.” It came out of his mouth faster than he could imagine and, yeah, not an entire lie. He wouldn’t have minded it to be a firefighter.
“Really?”
“You sound surprised.”
“No, it’s just –”
“What?” He asked arm crossed at his chest and eyes trailing down to the tips of his shoes, trying not to show her the hurt in his voice.
“My dad was a firefighter too.” She whispered, a sad smile on her face.
“Oh –” Dean looked up at her then, feeling guilty for lying to her but he couldn’t tell her the truth, though.
“You kinda remember me him.” She smiled, before walking towards the door. She was almost inside when she turned around towards him. “Be safe out there, Dean.”
He watched her turn around again, while his mind was still stuck on her words. Dean didn’t know how to answer that, but he knew that, for some reason, he wanted to keep talking with her. So, he tried hard to come up with something smart to say but, of course, he wasn’t Sam.
“I lied.” He said without really thinking. Dean closed his eyes, giving himself an idiot. Y/N stopped in her tracks, eyebrows furrowed in confusion while turning around for the second time. She looked at him with curiosity. She leaned against the door frame with her hands joined together in front of her, studying him and trying to decide what to do next.
“About what?” She asked cautiously.
“About the bruises and the job,” Dean admitted, hoping someone would come to look for them and save him from his misery.
“Did you have a good reason to lie?”
Dean was taken aback by her question but nodded at the same time. “Yeah.”
“Would you lie again if I asked you the same question?”
“Probably.”
“You could have gotten away with it, you know that right?” She asked, amused.
“Yeah, I’m painfully aware.”
“Then why did you confess?”
“I have no fucking idea, usually I’m better than this.”
“I wouldn’t have said.” She joked, earning an annoyed look from Dean. They studied each other for a few seconds until he broke the silence they had fallen into.
“Are you gonna ask again?” He said, wondering why he was torturing himself like that.
“Oh, I will at our next dinner.”
“Our next dinner?” He echoed her with a smirk on his lips.
“Yeah, you didn’t think you were out of the hook for lying to me just because you’re cute, right?”
“Cute, uh?” Dean smirked, taking a few steps towards her while making her roll her eyes. He raised his hand in surrender. “Alright, dinner seems fair.” He agreed, hoping he wouldn’t have to regret it.
“Good, ‘cause I have high expectations for you next lie." She winked at him, before going inside. Dean stayed stuck on the floor, blinking a few times at the closed door before starting to laugh.

Summary
It took a long time after Cas died for Dean to come to the conclusion that he would have to keep on living. So he does. He builds a life after him and holds him close despite their permanent distance and learns to grow around his grief along the way. In one version of this story, it goes like this: The grief is all-consuming and never-ending. It takes a couple years, but Dean finally symbolically lays his best friend to rest and a new life grows out of the old, continuing the unending circle of life. In another version of this story, it goes like this: The grief is all-consuming and never-ending. Dean can’t let his best friend go and leans into old habits to try to undo what was done to him on the off chance it’ll end with the reunion he’d been dreaming of, bringing him a second chance at life. Either way, it ends like all great love stories do: It doesn’t.

Tuesday
A/N: A little something I found during a desktop cleanup. This is OLD, but I thought I’d post it anyway.
Pairing: Sam x reader
Warning: Angsty
Word Count: 650
Summary: Sam just loves Tuesdays (Sarcasm)
________
“Wake up, Sammy. It’s Tuesday,” you say, leaning down to kiss his cheek to wake him gently.
Sam wraps his arms around you, pulling you closer and sighing contentedly. “Morning.”
“Is that…bacon?”
You can’t help the smile that spreads across your face. “Yep,” you answer, popping the p. “Come on, Jody’s making breakfast.”
Jody had asked the three of you to come to Sioux Falls yesterday evening. You were all packed up and heading over before she could even tell you why she wanted you there, and when you finally arrived in the middle of the night, she had insisted that you all get some rest first.
You and Sam joined Dean and Jody in her kitchen. The boys sat at the table, Dean with his coffee, and Sam with the smoothie Jody handed him as soon as he walked in. While you helped Jody put the final touches on breakfast, Asia’s ‘Heat of the Moment’ comes on. Dean snatches up his phone to change the song. “Sorry, Sammy.”
Sam grimaces, briefly remembering the torture that Gabriel put him through all those years ago.
“So, Jody, why’d you call us over here? Got a case for us?”
The doorbell rings suddenly, pulling everyone’s attention for a moment. “That’d be Bobby,” Jody mentions.
“I got it,” you say, putting down the knife you were holding to run and answer the door.
Sam gets up, grabbing your arm before you can leave the kitchen. He pulls you close, taking his time to breathe in your scent. “Don’t get that.”
You laugh, a little confused. “Why? It’s just Bobby-“
“It’s not Bobby.” Sam’s words have an odd sense of truth and finality to them, but you make to answer the door anyway. Sam grabs your arm again, hard enough to hurt this time. “Please.”
Dean and Jody tense, uncomfortable with Sam’s sudden shift in behavior. Dean’s voice sounds like a threat. “Sam…”
Sam realizes what he’s done and jerks his hand away from you as if your skin were searing hot against his own. Absently, you rub your arm where he grabbed you. The doorbell rings again, and Sam bites his lip in anticipation. Bracing himself for what’s on the other side.
“Okay, consider me spooked, Sammy. What the Hell’s going on?”
He spares a glance at Jody and Dean in the kitchen. They’re completely still; frozen in time. For some reason, you haven’t noticed.
“It’s a Demon.”
“You sure it’s not just Bobby? I mean, Jody just said-“
“I’m positive.”
“What else are you positive about, Sammy?”
“It’s gonna kill you,” he finally breaths.
The doorbell rings again, and you hear Bobby. “You idjits gonna let me in or not?”
Sam shudders at the sound, and a solitary tear slips down his face. He gives you this terrified look that almost breaks your heart right there on the spot. “Don’t answer it,” he practically begs, “Don’t let it in this time.”
“This time?”
Sam nods. Every morning, I wake up here. Jody’s making breakfast, that god awful song comes on, that thing comes to the door…and it kills you.”
“Like the Mystery Spot?” you ask.
“Worse. I don’t always wake up as soon as it happens. Sometimes it’s the end of the day, or the next two days. Whenever I naturally fall asleep.
“Gabriel’s dead, the world isn’t ending, I’ve prayed to everything I can, and I’ve tried to make deals. Nothing changes it.”
“How many times have I…”
“Too many,” he says, looking down at you. “I can’t—don’t make me do this again,” he pleads.
“I have to,” you say, walking to the door. Your hand touches the knob and-
“Sammy!” Dean’s standing next to his bed in the bunker. Sam finally comes to in a cold sweat. As he calms down from the nightmare, he looks around the room and the only sign you were ever there is the photo on the bedside table. Reality sets in and Sam remembers that you died years ago.
“I still miss her too.” Dean says, reminiscing as he picks up the photo.

Memories
Hi! I've been writing this fic for almost a year now and I thought I may as well share it on here as well as ao3.
If you have any input or if there's anything wrong with the fic (in regards to warnings and offensive things etc) please don't hesitate to let me know. It isn't beta'd or anything, it's just me and spellcheck.
Updated monthly on the 1st (I was tempted to do an April Fools joke but that felt too mean).
Warnings are in the end notes of chapters when they are needed. Please read the tags too, there are some triggering topics.
It is Destiel and Saileen make an appearance as well as Claire/Kaia and Jody/Donna. I was very self-indulgent with the relationships...
Hope you enjoy!

Marry Me
Title: Marry Me
Song Inspiration: Marry Me by Thomas Rhett
Characters: Reader, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Castiel, Jody Mills, Original Characters
Word Count: 2, 258
Warnings: Angst
Author's Note: This story was originally posted by myself under the account Winchestersgirl92. It was published November, 2017.
Tumblr media
Dean’s hands tremble as he fumbles to get his tie put on correctly. It was the third time he was attempting to tie it and he was beyond frustrated. It’s not like this was his first time tying the damned thing. He was in his fed suit, the same suit he’d worn dozens if not hundreds of times before, but suddenly it felt too tight. Almost like it was trying to strangle him.
A gentle rapping at his bedroom door pulls him from his claustrophobic thoughts. It opens and Jody’s head, her hand covering her eyes, pops in through the crack.
“Are you about ready? We’re gonna be late,” she tells him. He lets out a nervous laugh.
“I’m decent, Jody. Just can’t get this tie,” he says. Her hand drops from her eyes and she smiles at him as she walks over. Taking the two ends of the tie in her hands, she quickly starts to work on it.
“Can’t tie a tie?” She asks, quirking her eyebrow at him. He shakes his head quickly.
“Course I can. Just –,” he stops, unsure of what explanation to give her. She nods her head slightly as she looks back at her hands.
“Nervous?” She asks. He scoffs a laugh.
“Why would I be nervous?” He asks her. She smiles gently and pats his shoulders once she’s finished with the tie.
“Oh, I don’t know. It’s a big day after all,” she says. Dean nods slightly, a faraway look in his eyes. He blinks and refocuses on Jody’s face.
“Well, let’s go. Can’t be late,” he says.
They go down to the garage together and find Sam and Cas both waiting by the car. The four pile in, Dean driving, naturally, and head out on the road. It’s a short drive from the Bunker to the old farm Y/N’s family had rented for the afternoon. Dean parks amongst the other vehicles. The other three get out of the car as Dean stares at the white balloons and streamers marking the path to where the ceremony would be held.
“You want to get married on a farm?” Dean asks, staring at Y/N. The two are sitting on the trunk of Impala, passing a bottle of whiskey back and forth. Y/N takes the bottle and shrugs before taking a quick drink. She hands it back to Dean and wipes at her mouth.
“It’ll be cheaper. Family friend willing to rent theirs out to us when the time comes,” she says. Dean nods, taking a long drink from the bottle. He sets it down on the trunk behind them and shakes his head.
“I can’t believe you’ve actually planned out your wedding,” he says. Y/N rolls her eyes and Dean can’t help but smile. He loves teasing her, just to get a reaction. “You don’t even have a boyfriend.”
“So? I know I’m gonna get married one day. Might as well be prepared,” she tells him. He laughs now and shakes his head.
“Aren’t you a little girl scout,” he teases. She narrows her eyes at him.
“That’s the boy scouts actually,” she says, pushing off the trunk. Dean jumps down quickly, catching her elbow.
“Hey, hey, hey. Calm down. You know I’m just messing with you,” he says, turning her to face him. She crosses her arms over her chest as Dean’s hands come to rest on her waist. “I, personally, think it’s adorable that you’ve planned out a wedding with an imaginary groom.” She pushes away from him quickly and starts walking down the road. Dean laughs as he watches her. “Where do you think you’re going?” He asks.
“As far away from you as possible,” she calls back to him. He rolls his eyes and leans back against the car, crossing his arms. He glances up at the cloud darkened sky.
“Storm’s moving in,” he says. Her shoulders go up and down.
“I don’t care!!” She shouts to him. She’s several yards away at this point, still marching on.
“Y/N, come on. Don’t make me come get you,” he threatens. She stops dead in her tracks and turns slowly, looking back at him.
“You wouldn’t dare,” she challenges. He can’t help the smirk that spreads across his face. He does love a challenge, especially from her. He slides his leather jacket off and tosses it onto the trunk.
“Last chance,” he calls to her. She crosses her arms, feet planted firmly on the ground. He lets out one short laugh and shakes his head. “You asked for it.”
Thunder claps and lightning streaks across the sky as Dean breaks into a run. Y/N’s eyes widen and she turns on her heels, running away from him. She knows it’s futile. His legs are longer than hers so even if she was a little faster, he could catch her. His arms wrap around her waist just a moment later, knocking her off balance. The two tumble to the ground in a fit of laughter. Y/N lands on her back and lays her arms above her head, trying to catch her breath. Dean quickly moves to hover over her, pinning her hips to the ground.
“Told ya I’d get you,” he says, smiling down at her. She rolls her eyes and pushes at him.
“Get off me,” she says. He catches her hands and pins them to the ground above her head. The look on her face changes in an instant.
In the blink of an eye, Y/N shifts from the little girl he’d always known to the woman he was rarely given the opportunity to see. He’d see her sometimes in a bar when she’d had a little too much and some undeserving guy was hitting on her. He’d see her when they were on a case and a suspect needed some special persuasion to give them the information they needed. He’d see her on the very rare occasion that he’d move in a little too close. Just like now.
Her long eyelashes flutter over her y/e/c eyes that had suddenly grown darker. Her beautiful, pink lips are slightly parted, still trying to catch her breath. Her tongue darts out quickly to wet them and Dean nearly groans. He leans in a little closer and watches her eyes close, waiting. The whiskey on her breath teases him, enticing him to close to distance. His nose bumps against hers and his own eyes close.
Dean jumps at the sharp tapping on the driver side window. He looks over and his brother is standing there, waiting for him. Dean lets out a sigh and gets out of the car now too. Jody and Cas are already making their way to seating area. Sam is watching his brother closely.
“You good?” He asks. Dean looks at him and rolls his eyes.
“Of course, I’m good. Go on. I’m right behind you,” he tells him. Sam nods and turns, following after the others. Dean runs a hand over his face then glances around. Quickly, he pulls a metal flask from his inside jacket pocket. He takes a long drawl from it before returning it its hiding place. “Showtime,” he mumbles to himself.
He makes his way up the balloon marked path and finds where everyone is gathered. There are about 50 chairs set up, divided by an aisle. A simply decorated arch waits at the front, Y/N’s grandfather standing beneath it with a Bible in his hands.
“Dean,” Sam’s voice calls. Dean blinks and looks around. Sam is waving to him from a row of seats about midway on the left. His heart sinks as he makes his way to the chair between Jody and Sam.
For a moment, he’d almost had himself convinced that he had actually kissed her on that stormy afternoon not long ago. He almost believes that he was the one who had taken her out every weekend for six months before finally giving her the ring she’d always wanted. He’d been lost in a fantasy of her in a white dress making her way down the aisle to him. But as he takes his seat, reality washes over him.
He hadn’t kissed her. The rain had come suddenly and drawn him away from her beckoning lips. He hadn’t taken her out. She’d met Derek two days later and Dean knew right away he was already too late. She’d be walking down the aisle in a matter of minutes to Derek, her future husband.
Music begins to play from somewhere nearby and Derek takes his place next to Y/N’s grandfather. Her sister, the maid of honor, comes down the aisle, followed shortly thereafter by the flower girl and ring bearer, Y/N’s niece and nephew. The music changes, the traditional wedding march starting, and everyone stands. Dean forces himself to his feet before looking over his shoulder. The sight he’s met with takes his breath away.
Y/N’s standing at the end of the aisle, her arm looped through her father’s, looking positively glorious, as if she wasn’t already the most beautiful woman Dean had ever seen. Her make-up was light and natural, accentuating her eyes and lips, her best features in Dean’s opinion. A halo of flowers sits a top her head making her look like an angel. Dean’s eyes roam over her body as she walks down the aisle. The dress was simple, a perfect mix of classy and sexy Dean didn’t even know was possible. He shakes his head, forcing away the thoughts of slowly taking it off of her.
Her grandfather tells everyone to be seated once they reach the other end of the aisle. Dean falls into his seat, earning a concerned glance from his brother. Dean stares at the back of the person in front of him as her grandfather begins to speak.
“Who gives this woman today?” He asks in the traditional manner.
“Her mother and I,” her father says before placing a kiss to her cheek. Dean squeezes his eyes closed. And me. He thinks to himself. A hand comes over his quickly. He opens his eyes and finds his hands balled into fists on his thighs. Jody has one of hers over his and squeezes it gently. The ceremony continues and Dean does his best to block it out until one phrase falls on his ears, his head shooting up quickly.
“If anyone has any reason these two should not be married, speak now or forever hold your peace,” Y/N’s grandfather announces, eyes roaming the crowd.
It was a statement made out of tradition, no one ever really expected anyone to object. Dean can feel three sets of eyes on him; Sam, Jody, and Cas all expecting him to speak. Time seems to stop. The thought had surprisingly never crossed his mind. He could stand up right now and tell Y/N exactly how he feels. Tell her that he loves her and wants her to marry him instead of Derek.
Jody’s hand squeezes his again and time resumes. His fist she’s holding opens and clasps her hand tight instead. Vows and rings are exchanged. A kiss that makes Dean’s eyes sting with tears and it’s all over. Everyone stands again and claps as Y/N’s grandfather introduces Mr. and Mrs. Derek Cypress. Dean’s still clinging to Jody’s hand as they stand in line to congratulate the happy couple. As they move closer, she pulls her hand away. Y/N looks over and breaks into a wide smile.
“You made it!!” She exclaims before throwing her arms around Dean. He lets out a laugh and returns the embrace.
“Always underestimating me,” he tells her. They stay that way, neither breaking away from each other, until a hand presses against Dean’s back. “Congrats, Sweetheart,” he whispers, kissing her cheek quickly. She looks up at him as he pulls away from her slowly.
“Are you staying for the reception?” She asks, her eyes pleading. Dean balks at the thought of spending two or three hours watching her with Derek. Sam clears his throat quickly.
“Actually, I just got a text about a case. Seems pretty urgent,” he says. Y/N makes a face but nods as Dean sends a thankful look towards his brother.
“That’s too bad. But I get it. Family business and all,” she says with a wink. Dean nods, avoiding her eyes. “It means a lot that you were all here.”
“Wouldn’t have missed it for the world,” Jody says, her hand still resting against Dean’s back. She presses on him gently and he takes a step.
“Be careful!!” Y/N says. Dean steals one last look at her before continuing on to the car. Jody’s hand stays on his back as he pulls the flask from his pocket again. He finishes it off then tosses the keys to Sam.
“Where you wanna go?” Sam asks, catching the keys. Dean pulls open the passenger side door for Jody and looks at his brother.
“Anywhere with a lot of liquor,” he tells him. Sam smiles a little sadly and nods before getting into driver’s seat. Dean closes the door for Jody then gets into the back with Cas. He leans his head back against the seat and closes his eyes as his brother pulls away from the farm.
So I'm in my black suit, black tie, hiding out in the back, Doing a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask, I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees, Yeah, she wanna get married, Yeah, she gonna get married, But she ain't gonna marry me.

Save Yourself - Chapter 18

So We Won't Have To Keep Them All Inside
Dean Winchester x Female Reader
Helllloooo! I am so sorry for the super long hiatus. I hadn't planned that, but life got very bleh and uninspiring and stressful. Despite the next few chapters being the main part of the story I've been wanting to write I had a bit of self doubt in my ability to keep going. But it's here and hopefully on a slightly more consistent bases. If you haven't read this series then I will simply say I'm writing such a big fic because it's very much my Dean Winchester story. It's the one that has lived in my head so long, that has been thought about and rethought about so much that it makes the whole thing daunting. But my brain is back on this fic train and I'm hoping to finish it off by the end of the year. As always shout out to my tag list, you've been so patient and I hope you're as excited to read the next chapters as I am to write them. Much love 💙💙💙
Series Summary: “I promise.” Those two words would trap you in a life you never wanted. You are an artist, a hunter, a Winchester. And yet the pain in Dean’s eyes as demanded you live the life he wants you live, you couldn’t say no. You met the Winchesters by chance, found out they were real people. And you figured it was a once in a life time thing, but then Dean called you, and so did a new job. Both leading to the life you wanted, a family that didn’t begin or end in blood and a once in a life time love. And he said leave it and him behind, forget. But you can’t. Chapter Summary: The family trip to Dodge city was meant to be fun for the whole family… And it was, until it wasn’t. With Dean finally coming around on the idea of Jack not being outright evil, a bystander getting killed threw a monkey wrench into everything. And then there’s Claire; determined to be a hunter, to do it all alone until she realizes that having someone by her side is helpful. Warnings: Cannon typical violence, some fluff, some sad feels
A few days later
You all had managed to make it home in one piece. Jack was distraught and none of you knew how to help him. Death was an unfortunate part of living, and an unavoidable part of hunting. And how could you even begin to explain that to someone who’s been alive for a matter of weeks?
“I understand why you like the kid.” Dean says softly, “but I think we need to cool it with the training for a minute.” He gently slides his hand into yours, giving it a small squeeze.
“I just want him to see the world we fight for. To see what you and Sammy do is important.” You give him a meek smile.
“I know, sweetheart.” He kisses your temple, pulling you into his arms. “And you will. You make Sam and I believe in the Family Business all the time.” He chuckles.
You watch as the sleepy little town of Lebanon, Kansas rolls by; the sun is shining, crows flying through the air and baby roaring down the road. It’s amazing how the world rambles on, no matter the tragedy or joy that’s happening… Your phone buzzes in your pocket and you quickly fish it out to see a string of texts from Sammy.
“Jack isn’t taking it well.” You sigh, rubbing your eyes. Dean glances at you everyone once in a while, watching as you pull your lip in between your teeth and biting at the skin.
That’s not good. Dean thinks to himself.
“We’ll work through it.” He reassures you as he pulls up to the bunker. He swiftly glides the Impala into the garage, parking her right next to your little blue Subaru. He turns to open the door when he feels your hand on his thigh.
“You mean that?” You ask. He fully turns to you, eyes searching yours as much as yours are searching his.
“Ya.” He nods, taking a deep breath. “This case,” His gaze moves past you, eyes looking at something you can’t see. “It’s dug up a lot of memories of people I couldn’t save.”
“Dean-”
“Not— not in a bad way sweetheart, just a reminder.” He gently cups one of your cheeks, thankful you are not one of those people. Not yet. He shakes the intrusive thought from his mind, bringing his other hand up to your cheek. “And we’ll help Jack get past this.” He brings his lips to yours, pouring every ounce of love he can into the kiss. The heat of your lips warms his body head to toe, a little bit of hope seeping back into his bones. Hope that this small bump in the road is all it is.
“And as fun as Dodge City was, I think you and I need some time alone.” Dean hums in your ear, placing a gentle kiss on your neck.
“Okay Romeo.” You giggle, playfully swatting at him. Your phone rings out and you gently pull away, earning a pitiful whine from your husband. “It’s Claire.” You sigh.
“Fine.” He playfully rolls his eyes as he slides back to his side of the car.
“Hey what’s up?”
“I need you to come help me with this case.” She blurts.
“I’m doing fine. Little stressed, how are you?” You roll your eyes. Dean flashes a smile as he gets out of the car, grabbing the bag of groceries and walking inside.
“Hi (Y/N). How are you? You wanna come on a hunt with me?” She pointedly repeats. “I could use the girl power, and a Winchester. Which you happen to be both…” A sudden wave of voices drowns out her words.
“Where are you?” You frown.
“Bar, about an hour away from Omaha.”
“Nebraska?” You scrunch your nose, sliding out of the car. “We’re kinda dealing with that baby situation still, and Dean’s finally….” As you put your hand on the door the lights in the garage flicker.
“(Y/N)?” Claire asks.
“Let me call you back.” The words slowly tumble out as you hang up, feet moving faster than your brain as you appear in the doorway to the war room. “What in sam hill happened?” You ask, running over to Dean.
“Jack’s gone.” Dean grunts as he stands, turning to help Cas.
“What?” You frown.
“Jack thinks he’s a monster.” Cas sighs as he plants himself in the nearest chair.
“What did Claire need?” Dean asks, leaning against the war table.
“Wanted help on a case.” You check him over as you direct your question to Sammy. “How are we going to find him? He can’t be out there alone.” Your mind starts to race with all the possible ways he could get hurt, or how he could accidentally hurt someone.
“Baby.” Dean pulls you back to face him.
“There’s so much that could happen.” You whisper, the terror rising in your voice.
“Sweetheart.” He says firmly, squeezing your hands to get you to take a breath. “Go to Claire.” You open your mouth to protest but he shoots you a look, happy when your mouth snaps shut. “You help Claire, I’ll find Jack.”
“Call me -”
“When I find anything.” He nods, pulling you into his chest. “Gotta keep the kids alive.” He whispers in your ear.
“And you thought we didn’t have any kids.” You laugh.
“Should have known you’d get your way.” Dean chuckles, placing a kiss in your hair. “Be careful.” He whispers.
“I’m not the one who gets visits from Death on the norm.” You slap his back. “I will though… as long as you are too.”
“Promise.”
_______
The diner bell dings as you enter; It’s a little busy, but not much more than any of the ones back home. You wave to the waitress and pick up a couple of menus, sliding into the booth where Claire is sat. The waitress brings two mugs and a fresh pot of coffee, pouring each of you a cup before attending to the other patrons.
“We’re dealing with a nest of Vamps.” She begins.
“Why yes, the drive was good. Not much traffic, lot of semi trucks though.” You cock an eyebrow at her. She gives you a nod, letting a small sigh escape.
“Good. How’s the old man?” she asks, managing to keep the eye roll small. “ And Sam?”
“They’re good. Trying to track down that baby… who’s not actually a baby like we thought.” You frown, pouring a couple of creamers into your coffee.
“You guys always have the weirdest cases.” She shakes her head, taking a large gulp of her black coffee.
“Last name is Winchester. Pretty much a magnet for weird.” You pick the menu up, trying to read the specials but your eyes can’t seem to read any of the words. You check your cell. Nothing.
“Your volume is on-.” Claire grits her teeth as a notification dings. “If they found anything you would know.”
“Ya, well, if you ever disappear like this I would worry just the same.” You sigh. “Why did you need me on this hunt anyways?” You ask, taking a sip of your coffee.
“Can’t believe you drink it like that…” Claire looks at your mostly cream coffee in utter disgust.
“If I wanted criticism on how I take my coffee I would go find Lucifer.” You mutter.
“Like I said, I need a Winchester.” Claire reiterates. “Being a young female hunter has it's disadvantages.” Her eyes move to the door. “And Dean always tells the two of us to travel in pairs…”
You turn to see a pair of men walk in; they look like brothers, maybe a few years apart, dressed in standard issue hunter FBI suits. Ah, that’s why she didn’t want Dean.
“Brought a friend.” The older one smirks, sliding in next to you.
“(Y/N), Jason and Nick Clayton.” Claire gestures to the two. "We ran into each other while tracking one of the vamps."
“Pleasure.” You stick your hand out to Nick, the older one. “(Y/N) Winchester.” Before your name has even fully left your mouth both their jaws hit the floor. You glance at Claire, who simply shrugs.
“(Y/N) Winchester... like the one who killed Rasputin?” Jason asks.
“Killed– Dude she’s the one who took on the Devil AND GOD.” Nick exclaims.
“And freed so many trapped spirits in that haunted college–”
“And had an angel wipe her memory only for it not to work!”
You and Claire look at each other, the same look of bewilderment on your faces.
“Ok, cut the crap. It’s not like she’s famous.” Claire rolls her eyes.
“Not famous?” Nick scoffs. Claire looks over at you, her jaw clenching so hard that she’s about to break all her teeth.
“It’s because I’m Dean’s wife.” You shrug.
“What?” The brothers say in unison.
“No way. You’re not his wife. He’s your husband.” Jason clarifies.
“Lucky bastard.” Nick winks. You scoff at the absurd notion that you are more famous than Dean.
“Wow… Let’s move on from the fangirling ok?” Claire scrunches her nose in irritation.
"Now I know how Dean felt when we first met." whisper to her. "But yes, let's get this show on the road." You gesture for her to take the floor, letting her explain the current vampire problem in the area.
_______
“(Y/N)!” Claire yells as a vamp pins her to the floor. She squirms underneath him, her vision blurring as his hands close tighter around her throat. In the blink of an eye his head is gone, blood splattering her in the face.
“Thought you said you could take him?” You grin, offering your hand to her.
“Shut up.” She slaps your hand away, jumping to her feet.
“You ladies move fast!” Nick shouts as he takes out another vamp.
“Looks like it’s a party now.” You announce as the rest of the nest files inside.
“Let’s do this.” Jason grins. One vamp rushes Claire and in one clean swing his head is on the floor. Another rushes you, taking a swing of your pipe to the stomach before getting their head chopped off.
“Pipe!” Claire yells, holding her hand out. You slap it into her palm, unsheathing your machete for another vamp as she takes the head off another. The four of you stand back to back, waiting for another wave or for someone to move.
“You know, this thing is really handy.” She breaks the silence, spinning the pipe in her hand before handing it back to you.
“Winchester original?” Nick asks.
“Saw it in a video game, thought I would give it a try.” You laugh, wiping some of the vamp guts off the knives taped to the top of it.
“We’re fucking awesome.” Claire scoffs as she slowly turns in a circle to look at all the dead vamps..
“Hell ya.” You hold your fist up and she bumps it.
“Where to next?” Jason asks.
“How about food? And sleep?” You grab Claire by the neck and lead everyone out of the barn. “And a shower. The vamps seemed extra bloody today.” You attempt to shake off some of it, but to no avail.
The two boys get in their car and you and Claire climb into hers.
"You ok?" You ask.
"Are you Kidding? We just had the coolest fight." She snorts, leaning against the steering wheel with a grin on her face.
"I meant about the fan club." You correct. "This was meant to be your hunt, not a Winchester spectacle." Not that I ever expected to be a spectacle...
"Kinda why I wanted you here." She mumbles, glancing at your sky high eyebrows. "It proved that I know what I'm doing... and that I have back up." You nod, watching as the trees whip past.
"Prove to who?" You ask, looking down at the dry vamp blood on your thighs. You see her body go rigid, hands firmly gripping the wheel.
"Me..." She answers after a moment. "... Jody."
"We all know you're a great hunter." You say softly. "It's just... not really the life that anyone wants their loved ones to have." You look over at her; she's got a bloody lip and a small scratch across her cheek but she still looks too young to be wanting this life. "But we all understand the choice." You smile at her. She smiles at you, relaxing into her seat as she speeds back to the motel.
_______
“Ya… thanks man.” Jason hangs up the phone, turning to the group. “Looks like we got the main nest. Hunters in the next county found a few stragglers but nothing else.”
Claire and Nick nod, talking about where else they could look. Their voices fade into the background, you mind racing with possible answers as to why-
“(Y/N?).” Claire whispers, gently touching your arm.
“Ya?”
“You ok?” Jason asks, sharing a look with his brother.
“I haven’t heard from Dean–”
“They’re fine.” Claire reassures, standing up from the table.
“It’s been three days… something’s wrong.” You sigh, looking out the window.
“This is why you shouldn’t fall in love. All you end up doing is worrying.” Claire glares.
“Little worry is good.” Jason smiles.
“You don’t worry about anyone?” Nick prods, earning an icy glare.
“I haven’t heard from Cas or Sam either.” Your frown deepens.
“Wait, what?” Claire frowns. Dean tends to be hyper focused on hunting, but all three of them not keeping in touch? Definitely weird. She watches as you stare out the window, your expression flipping between worried and reprimanding yourself. “Maybe they don’t have cell service. Or they jumped in a lake with their phones again.” She shrugs.
“I’m sure they’re fine.” Jason pats your shoulder. “Unfortunately we have to head out.”
“Family calls.” Nick agrees. You quickly exchange info, telling both of them if they need anything to call. You walk them to the door, watching as they drive off in Nick's 1967 Mustang.
“They seemed nice enough.” You shrug, taking a seat next to her on the bed.
“They were.” Claire nods. You wait for her to elaborate, watching as she studies her fingernails.
“So why call for backup?” Claire sighs, slamming her laptop closed and looking at you.
“Jody and Alex bond over helping people in normal ways.” She takes a deep breath in. “And I haven’t had that with anyone except you and Dean.”
“Sounds like you wanted some family-”
“I don’t need a family.” She states, the walls behind her eyes slowly building.
“Maybe not, but you have one.” You point out. “I don’t know what it’s like to be you Claire. But I do know you can’t keep everything inside.” You gently take her hand. “If Sam and Dean show you anything, it's that family can put you through hell, but they can also pull you out.”
Her phone buzzes loudly, you can’t see who’s calling but by the eye roll you have a good guess.
“Jody?”
“Ya. Although she already called in her weekly attempt to make me come back…” She mutters, moving her hand over the ignore button.
“Answer it.” You shout.
“Why? I already know what she-“
“Please.” You whisper. Her big doe eyes study you for a moment, and she answers.
“We’re on our way.” She tells Jody, grabbing her backpack and dragging you with her.
_______
24 hours later
“You ate a lizard?” You scrunch your nose in disgust.
“Not much else over there.” Dean chuckles against your neck.
“Claire should have stayed out here, your PDA would make her sick and she’d be back to herself in no time.” Alex playfully jabs as she grabs all her work stuff.
“Haha.” You give her a small wave as she leaves. When the door clicks shut Dean moves you into his lap, hands caressing your legs.
“Dean…” You half heartedly push his hands away. His finger ghosts over the big bandage on the side of your leg. You helped the girls save him and Sam, managing to limp away with only a gash in your leg.
“Missed you sweetheart.” He mumbles, bringing his lips to yours.
“Missed you too.” You mumble back. He breaks the kiss, keeping his forehead against yours.
“Too close for both of us.” He states.
“Still thinking about you eating lizards.” you poke back.
“I mean it.” He takes a deep breath in, slowly letting his heart beat slow down. “To think about what could have happened.” He wraps his arms tightly around you, burying his face into your hair.
“I would rather not think about it.” You gently rub his back. “Spend too many hours doing that already.” You look out the screen door, watching as Donna, Sam and Jody laugh about something.
“Ugh, Alex was right. You two are gross.” Claire groans from the hall.
“Glad to see it puts your usual attitude back in place.” You chuckle, unraveling from Dean to look at her. She shrugs, plopping into the recliner. “You heading out?” you tentatively ask. Her eyes are puffy, hair scraped back into a ponytail.
“Think I might hang around here for a while… for Jody. And Alex.” She flashes a small smile.
“Good.” Dean nods.
“Embrace your people while they’re here.” You smile at her.
“No good to keep everything inside.” She nods, picking at her nails. The screen door screeches as Sam walks in, taking a seat next to you and Dean.
”Well on a completely unrelated note, I am apparently more famous than you among hunters.” you poke Dean in the chest.
Dean whips his head back so fast he hits the wall behind the couch.
“Nice.” Sam chuckles.
“How?” Dean frowns. You just laugh, shaking your head and giving him a kiss.
“I mean… you are the prettiest Winchester.” Dean chuckles.
“Dean! You can’t say that when Sam is here!” You laugh.
“Ok, you guys are the worst.” Sam shakes his head and walks back outside.

The small things in life
Fandom: Supernatural Characters: Jody Mills, Claire Novak Event: Sicktember 2023 Prompt: Alternate 2- Fuzzy Socks Word count: 770
Jody looked up from her book when she heard the front door open. Claire closed the door behind her and leaned on the frame with a sigh of appreciation. The young hunter looked disheveled with twigs in her hair and wet clothes, but Jody didn’t see any blood or new bruises on her face. As Claire's surrogate mother, she had learned to take solace in the small things.
“Hi there, kiddo.”
The young woman let her duffle bag slide to the floor and sighed again but with an exaggerated eye roll this time.
"You know I'm not a kid, right? I’m a legal adult. I old enough to drink alcohol and all that."
Jody heard the humor in the tone, but it was partly masked by the unusual gruffness of Claire's voice. Her maternal instincts, never far from the surface, kicked in. The girl was tired, which might have lowered the pitch of her voice, but there was more to it than that. A glance at the state of her daughter's boots, as she was discarding them on the welcome mat, indicated the source of the problem.
“Sounds like you’re old enough to smoke 3 packs a day, too. But my bet is you’ve spent too many stake-out nights in the damp undergrowth with boots that have holes in the soles.”
Claire rolled her eyes again, but couldn't protest too much since her socked feet made squelching noises as she took a few steps, leaving wet footprints on the floor.
After a hug that they both needed even if it made Claire feel awkward, the sheriff shooed her upstairs to take a hot shower.
Later, Jody knocked on the door of the guest room which used to be the girl’s bedroom, and peeked inside. Claire was hugging her knees on the twin bed, dressed in her old sweatpants and a warm sweater she had found in the closet. The toes of her bare feet were curled up as if to offer less surface to the surrounding coolness.
“Didn’t you find any warm socks lying around?”
When Claire shook her head, bringing the bedspread on her lower half, Jody frowned and started to look in drawers and in the back of the closet. After a minute, she triumphantly produced a pair of hot pink fuzzy socks.
The younger woman crinkled her nose at the sight of them.
"Jody, I told you earlier I wasn't a kid anymore. I stopped wearing pink when I turned 12."
"The joke's on you, Missy: these socks are Donna's. So there are no children in this story. Seriously, I'm overdue for laundry and these are the warmest clean socks in the house. And don't you know that cold feet in bed make demons happy?"
At Claire's startled look, Jody amended: "Well... Maybe I'm misquoting Ingmar Bergman. But if you want me to stop calling you a kid, grow up! And wear those damn socks. A sick hunter isn’t doing the world any good.”
Claire narrowed her eyes but reluctantly extended her hand to take the socks. Her work done for the moment, the sheriff left her to go tend to ‘Mount Wash-more’ that was waiting for her in the laundry room.
******* When Claire’s phone rang from the bottom of her duffle bag, Jody brought it up to her right away. The screen showed a missed call from Dean; it might be important since a Winchester rarely called just to chitchat.
The door of the guest room was open. Jody’s heart warmed at the sight of Claire, on top of the bedspread, smiling at her fuzzy pink feet. She looked so young! She was so young, legally an adult or not. But just now, in her room listening to music and admiring her pink socks, she looked like a teenager happy to paint her nails with sparkly nail polish.
Of course, the older woman didn’t remark on any of this when she handed the phone. She didn’t want to alter Claire’s mood by pointing it out. But when she called Dean back, she was still admiring her fuzzy socks and wiggling her toes. Sure, she rolled her eyes when he called her kiddo, but she didn’t say anything about it and a faint smile was lingering on her lips even if her hoarse voice proved her condition was just marginally better than before.
Jody closed the door with a smile of her own brightening her features. Even if the world was probably about to end - again - at least her kid could enjoy her fuzzy socks. There was really joy and solace in the small things in life.
