I started my job just at the end of their pay cycle, so although I’ve been working for two weeks, I just got my first paycheck. and like... I knew this was coming, but actually having it is such a relief. the strength of my own reaction to seeing that deposit caught me off guard.

yall i was supposed to go in for overtime today but i woke up very late and almost unable to stand, let alone walk, so im gonna email my boss and let her know and apologize. maybe ill go in early next week to make up for it.

today is my last day at a place I've worked for nearly 3 years, and it's also the day of a solar eclipse, which is p fucking great because I'm leaving for school and astrophysics/space is my dream field

Boy am im glad im only somewhat shy and i dont have actual social anxiety because there is an inordinate amount of calling strangers on the phone and knock in their houses uninvited

The UN requested Japan ban anime, manga and games that depicted any sexual violence towards women. Japan responded by saying no, as firstly, it wasn't real and secondly, many of the creators were women themselves and it would do the opposite and instead create sexism toward women. source

follow-up on that whole “trying to assume good faith” thing. this is going to sound braggy but I’m really just... writing it for myself, to keep myself accountable and remind myself of this feeling.

there’s a new person at work that I just didn’t click with very well. she has a couple of personality quirks that can grate on me, and while there were one or two things she’s done that bother me for legitimate reasons, I’ve reacted more strongly than justified because of that minor personality issue. when I was thinking yesterday about people I need to be kinder to in my head, I thought of her--because a lot of what’s annoyed me is that she’s a very chipper person and someone who is very big on sharing and helping, to the point of irritation in some but clearly coming from a good place.

and today we had a meeting where we talked a lot about some new policies and programming and like... what can go wrong, and how we can be prepared when it does. and there’s some really heavy content involved, and we might face hostility, and some people who have been there longer were very open about things like feeling safe/respected as black women in our workplace, or fearing burnout and that kind of thing. serious stuff! important stuff! and we came up with a lot of good coping strategies.

but like... this girl has been here two weeks and hasn’t even started doing the work we’ll be doing, and at one point I looked at her and thought “she’s in overload right now,” so as soon as the meeting ended I went right up to her and said I wanted to check in because if *I* had heard all this stuff in the beginning of my time here, I would be freaking the fuck out, and just reminded her that 1) we’re planning for worst case scenarios that won’t happen every time or even once every ten times, 2) the work is time-limited and when it’s done, we can walk away, 3) 99% of the people we interact with aren’t as invested as we are and it’s okay if we mess up.

and I am really really glad I did, because she had been overwhelmed to the point where she teared up a bit while I was talking and didn’t really have the words to respond. I think I have a tendency to... think of nice things I could say or do for people, and then get worked up over it and anxious, and don’t actually say it. and this was a good reminder of the real benefits of trusting that gut instinct.

as I’m writing this, I’m realizing too how much of this has to do with the general culture at my workplace. my coworkers are incredibly smart, empathetic, generous people, and being around them is making me into a better person.
